  • Who is your Orisa? Who is your godfather? Are you initiated? These are common questions in some circles. But are they the BEST questions?
Another question is,, What do you get when you combine a "child of Sango" a "child of Obatala" and a "child of Osun" or any other combination of Orisa devotees?
An even better question is, What combinations do we need to build schools, businesses and banks in or communities?
Check out my video series, Orisa Lifestyle for Beginners, and get answers to your most important questions about Yoruba Spirituality.

Finally someone who really speaks the truth, there are so many people on here who talk about the Orishas but don't even understand Yoruba culture. What you said about Yorubas wanting to find out about where you're from you hit the nail on the head. This even happens with your name in Nigeria. Keep up the good work brother.

it's a result of training... police a re trained to see crime and to fight it. doctors are trained to see disease and to use intrusive medical interventions to "heal" them. increasingly, orisa priests are being conditioned to think that initiation is the solution to all problems...

I m very new to this, I have always feel connected orisha mostly the yemaya/ olokun, so I thought! a night ago I prayed to yemaya to reveal her self to me and help me ,but to my greatest suprise I had a dream about shango talking to me called me his daughter, and I also see yemaya items which I admired in the dream but they didn't belong to me ,it belongs to some other girl in the dream.

Obatala came to me as a guide yesterday. Before that I knew nothing about Obatala, however at the same time I knew Him. I went to a shop and his statue called to me, so I took it home. I was initiated 10 years ago. I went the path of Christianity and always wanted help, a Father figure and a guide. Never found one. This is the first time in my life where I feel someone is looking after me. And I’m humbled and honored it’s Obatala.

Thank you for your honesty and sincerity. As an Afro Latino from NYC, Santeria and Ifa has always been around. I have always had an interest and fascination but I run into many just trying to sell services at high rates. It’s very difficult to find honest priest, priestess or Babalu. I’m seeking to grow my understanding of my spirituality through the ancestors and guides. What questions do you recommend a new comer ask to find a true guide? How do you recommend trying to find a good honest practitioner? Thank you for what you do.

I went to the African Village in South Carolina. My first reading was a cowery shells reading. Dilogun. I kept getting Shango and "standing to great my wealth. Later I did my DNA through 23andme. I gound I was 82% West African/ Nigerian. My reading said I was traced to Benin (Dahomey) and my Orisha was Obatala. Also my family Orisha was/ is Obatala. I got my family name Adewole and later my first name being Oriyomi. My 5% attribute is Nowbuild. So now I'm working on my next move. Also wanting to balance that Shango reading and that Obatala energy.

Your words are so true 👍 this is exactly what we would be telling our people to obey the rules of tradition and culture, so that our ancestors will come and help us in our weakness when we don't know how to pray properly. As for now things are not working like usual, because the way it's now is undue with so much irresponsible guidelines. And that's destroying our culture. As for now many things are not working properly , just like you said that normally tradition should be helping us to put things right when we make mistakes 😀 but some people has followed other ways 😀 by using innocent people to earn what they want 😉 and that is destroying things even more . 😊 perhaps you have tell my story 😉 how can tradition become normal again? Is it by fighting a good war 🤔

it's good to be in tune. sometimes, we have a strong enough relationship to our ancestry to detect the mission from the source. still, it is always good to confirm and formalize the relationship with ifa so that you know WHY your family serves a particular deity. for example, it may be that you serve sango for wealth... but the odu that gives birth to your lineage describes how sango had to refrain from fighting in order to prosper. it's counter intuitive but true.

    • @ObafemiO

before determining your orisa, you must determine who you are. ori is the basis of your spiritual identity. knowing your orisa is irrelevant until you know yourself. how you discover yourself? what are your natural gifts and talents? who are your ancestors? what is the purpose of your lineage?

    • @ObafemiO
      @ObafemiO  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

save yourself a lot of distress. put the idea of a godparent out of your mind and never mention it again. ever. instead, seek out your natural gifts and talents, then find some spiritual community where you feel comfortable GIVING it away. for example, if you sing, sing for the temple 5 hours weekly. this will empower you and give you the opportunity to set the parameters of your engagement, while observing the environment long enough to make informed decisions about your future in the practice and with the temple in question. NOBODY ELSE WILL EVER GIVE YOU THIS ADVICE but it is 100% guaranteed to yield success IF you follow it to the letter.

How do you figure this stuff out if you’re the only one in your family on this path? I don’t know many of my family members and the history just wasn’t passed down. I’m confused I was going to start praying to Oshun and Papa Candelo because I felt connected to them but it seems like a much deeper process. I don’t have anyone to teach me or talk to me about this stuff. 🤦🏽‍♀️… I don’t want to end up having a bad reaction because of my own ignorance.

that is not consistent with the tradition. it has ALWAYS cost money and it has always been expensive to practice orisa lifestyle. at the same time, you are right that people are exploiting one another... we, the americans must not be distracted by what the nigerians are doing (i.e., selling what cannot be sold). they live in an extremely corrupt and impoverished state. instead, we must educate ourselves and clarify our motivations. STOP TRYING TO BUY THAT WHICH CAN ONLY BE CULTIVATED FROM THE INSIDE OUT AND BUILT FROM THE BOTTOM UP!!!

I was previously subscribed your profile, but some locked myself out of my account. I just found you profile again. Long story short. I have ancestry from Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Mali.I have a question. I in the past 2 or more years have been calling out to my ancestors. I’m still in the enlightening stage. I set up a small alter not to long ago. A few weeks later I had a dream/vision. I was in Nigeria and a older gentleman approached me and introduced himself to me in a similar way you introduce yourself in your videos. The man spoke to me in English, but had a heavy accent. He mentioned like 5-6 names/things in his greeting. We were in some type of hut. He said I will now pray to some type of God/deity of something (I don’t recall on who was going to pray to) He started to shake a wood type of rattle instrument and starting chanting/jumping/dancing almost like in some type of ceremony and there were also others there who were chanting and dancing too. Do you know what if any meaning my dream/vision had. The main thing I know is that it was Nigeria, because I remember saying in the dream I looked for to going back there. Any feedback from you would be highly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply.I will checkout your website. I just want to add that around the time the occurrence happened... I was seeking to find out who my Orisha was (if I had one) I wish I would of wrote the names down I heard in my dream. They were not American, so they are hard to remember. I know the man said he was going to pray to another (he gave a specific name and title) and what he had control over. I think it’s possible he told me exactly who my Orisha was. Is it possible to be reveled in a dream state and can a female have a male Orisha?

Greetings. The most important thing is to not ask for anything. Not information. Not readings. Nothing. Find somebody - a priest - and offer your natural gifts and talents. Serve. In the meantime I have books, videos, blogs, social media to last you a decade at the least. I offer enough classes to last you five years. So, you are not obliged to join anything or receive anything. You can take your time learning the lay of the land until you're clear about what this tradition is all about.
