    • @angelinasouren

      He is absolutely right. Portsmouth is an island off the coast of a country that is already known for its excessive insularity. Portsmouth is a pretty hostile place for anyone who isn't 'Pompey-born and -bred". I used to really like the place and learned the hard way how hostile it is toward people who aren't from here. Their lives don't matter, are totally expendable in the views of most people who are Pompey born and bred. It is also pretty hostile toward independent women (women who run businesses and so on).
      Southampton is dreary and dull (dead) but Portsmouth is deadly. Or at least it can be. With its stupid mafia-style intimidation tactics, its stupid one-sided "shut up or else" communications and its tendency to take every sneeze and every smile as as personal insult.

    • @mrsquackers8368
      @mrsquackers8368 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I'm from Cambridge and I've lived in Gosport and Portsmouth for 12 years. I've been made to feel welcome from most. Southampton is a bit strange though. I used to work there and my work colleagues made fun of me for having a PO postcode.

    Nice but rough. Most organizations offering English courses to students coming from the continent decided to move their activities somewhere else. I spent three summers in North End going to school in downtown. It was really frequent, locals looking for troubles with other countries guys at pubs and discos. It was so stressful that decided not to come back. And I liked the city.

    • @angelinasouren
      @angelinasouren ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I know what you mean. I am from Amsterdam, have previously lived in the US. I thought that Portsmouth was lively and friendly, and used to really like it. No longer. I moved from Southampton to Southsea where anonymous people started targeting me instantly. I am now close to the hot spot area where a lot of hostile activity in Portsmouth is organized from (the area around New Road, Queens Road and Kingston Road, roughly, including the start of London Road). It's often like a guerrilla war zone. I've been in Portsmouth since the start of 2009. It eats away at your health, both physical and mental.

My uncle had a day job, but was also was a bouncer at the NAAFI . I had no idea Portsmouth had such a reputation. My cousins still live there. I guess I am out of touch.

      Lived in Portsmouth 30 years Landport and somerstown are actually the best places I’ve lived In Portsmouth. Somerstown a bit grubby but the community is alright as long as u aren’t a snob, landport I grew up most my life and loved it. Although not gona lie a certain neighbour broke in to our flat and set it on fire aswell on my brothers birthday with us inside but that was still preferable to Buckland! I’ve lived in buckland on 2 seperate occasions and it’s been vile both times. Dinlo central there.😂

      Charles Dickens was born in what is now Buckland. Most of the houses in the place of his birth are Grade 2 Listed and in a Conservation Area. Tourists go there and the street is frequently used by film crews. Anyone coming to Pompey now, hoping to see the mayhem of this video are likely to be disappointed although as in any city there are areas to be avoided, I agree.

    I was brought up in the outskirts of Portsmouth.
    Followed Pompey from the age of 15 to 18 during the period of 1979 -1982.
    I went to home games and travelled away, I was no angel but I would not have called myself one of the hooligans.
    If the away group were attacked everyone was expected to stand and fight so it was very easy to get drawn in.

  • @DarkPigeon21

    Pompey played the game in the late 70's & 80's and were there to be counted. It's time the old boys consign it to history, clip their kids around the ear and point them in a more positive direction by putting their efforts into making the club one to be proud of for all the right reasons

The local pub was like the one in An American Werewolf In London..."stay on the path"!!!! It was a real joy to come back down to Pompey at weekends where people would talk to you and not be suspicious of you. That guy commentating is very misinformed.

    It's true that the city of Portsmouth hasn't got a very good reputation but as a native of the south coast I can honestly say that the entire region is a bit of a shithole. If you drive along the south coast you will pass through some lovely towns, but also many places filled with chavs where unemployment and poverty are rife. As a region it is probably as depressed as Merseyside or the North East.

    There were some "nutter's" that use to show up in the early eighties who probably deserved some sort of mad reputation but often they would go to the matches on their own.

    It unfairly shows the mindset of people in Pompey to be a small minded and lost in history.
    I found the characters in this documentary to be the ones that put me off watching Pompey.

    Hostility to people from Havant?? Such bullshit, half 657 came from Lee Park. Also Portsmouth isn't an Island, it has Portsea Island as the South part of it but Paulsgrove, Cosham, Drayton and Farlington aren't even on the Island. To be honest Pomepy isn't a rough town, Somerstown, Paulsgrove and Wymering are dodgy but the rest isn't much. Old Portsmouth, Southsea, Farlington, Drayton, East Cosham, Eastney etc etc all pretty posh areas.

    its not as bad now, as it was in the 90's early 20's, when i was growing up. Good job i could run like a deer,lol. Most of them are behind bars now though
    But just recently there have been several knife stabbings, infact one happen about 400 meters from where I live 5 days ago and in 2007, a guy got killed by a butchers knife
    I think the people in the 70's, 80's and 90's children are becoming teenage thugs (chavs is lot we call them). But there become more violent. using knife instead of hands

    If you go to Stamshaw or Buckland you'll get aggro. Otherwise, Pompey is like any other city.
