Terrapins scanning chair needs to move to side and should be similar to Mako’s TV workstation. That would make room for cargo plates.

I upgraded to the 315P and it’s by far my favorite ship at the moment, it just genuinely feels like what a luxury solo spaceship would feel like when I’m inside, like it may be small but it doesn’t feel cramped. If I had one wish it would be that you could replace the tractor beam with like a mining laser

At the moment it's pretty useless. Not in the sense that it's bad but the 300i base variant is better or the same in everything but quantum fuel range. But after all this is an explorer and its two main features are a tractor beam as well as scanning/exploration equipment, which both aren't in the game yet. So eventually the 315p will just be awesome.

As somebody (newly) in a mining corporation. This is a great ship for a Mole scouting team. Imagine if your tractor beam could then sort the Quant pieces from the crap to optimise the run. Plus I prefer the exterior and interior over the 300i. The only oddity is the duel cargo bay.

Fantastic video, Law! Two of the ships I have been using lately and both serve their purpose very differently, as you stated in the wonderful vid you made. The 315p does take Stealth components and with one shield turned off and in stealth mode is very difficult to detect. I suppose with its modest cargo hold for its size, could be a viable smuggler for these reasons. Terrapin is a brick to fly overall and has a slow SCU speed but can get up to just over 1200 m/s at full bore. This makes for a good getaway especially if your medium radar (by SC ratio, three times as powerful or that much more range) detects the smaller foes closing while its top speed will allow it to outrun those bigger than itself. Its VTOL capability should make it very capable in high gravity/low altitude situations. AND do not forget it is designed to handle dangerous environments like in the new systems we may see soon...

I'd love to see the in-lore alleged "APC" capability of the Terrapin restored at least as a configurable option. And a real cargo grid as well, even if only as a third separately-available mode. To do either, they'll need to make either an alternate version of the ship with the central scanner seat/array completely removable/replaceable, or else retro-fit that functional modularity into the existing model. Either way, as much as I appreciate the outward design configuration of the Terrapin, to me it's just another one of the most egregious examples of CIG arbitrarily limiting the potential versatility of some of their ship designs, for dubious/suspect reasons. Especially at the listed price, this ruins the appeal of the Terrapin for me, at least in its present form.

Very interesting comparison Law. Both share that similar “pathfinder” label, but in reality, both are very different in roles and uses. I view the 315p as an exploration/pathfinder “generalist”, able to sample various roles in the exploration family of ships. The Terrapin on the other hand, seems razor focused on its scanner/radar abilities which are superb for its size. Like you mentioned, it’s should be great at radar/scanner data collection and Picket Duty / Raid Warning for fleet ops. I own and love both, but for very different reasons. Great vid as always Law. I feel like when people think of exploration the thing in everyones mind is finding new solar system and planets, which obviously they will never be able to make that type of content fast enough.
They will probably find a way to fill space with new things to discover, like asteroids, comets, meteors ,meteoroids and man made objects (Like broken ship parts or parts from old spacestations) that drift around without showing up on any maps until these exploration focused ships find them. And they could crash down on planets aswell so explorers have to scan the surface of planets.
These types of things could be randomly generated and spawned so they wouldnt have to be manually made every time while still being something new everytime.
This would also make an automatic symbiotic relationship between explorers and miners / salvagers. The explorers travel around with their much faster more fuel efficient ships and better scanners and find these different objects, they then report back to different hubs like planetside cities or spacestations where they sell this information. Or they could use the information themselves ofcourse, by changing ship and mining themselves or giving it to friends and split the profit.
These would then pop up on a quest hub of some sort, either an NPC or a billboard thing, where miners and salvagers could pick it up and do the job.
Also once the information is sold to the hub, it could either be free information and its basically a race to get the resources, or make it so that you buy the mining/salvaging rights off the hub.

Something that always gets me with these ships is all the wasted space. Terrapin needs more to fill the space around the scanning seat, unless it's gonna be filled with holograms?? or have options to remove the scanning functionality for a cargo bay, or troop jump seats, or an RV like mobile home interior, or a heap of other options..??? How about a Artillery support option? Like people are caling it a "Flying Tank", so why not use all that extra space to store large ballistic rounds, and the roof scanner/seat into a size 4 - 6 turret for the second player. Maybe some kind of 105mm - 150mm Howitzer, 75mm Bofor, or even some dual, twin linked 30mm gatlings (think A10 warthog)??? Maybe even rip out the seat and turret all together and just install some missile racks or some mining functionality. I can think of 100's of ways off the top of my head to fill the space, and use it more effectively, without having to empty or too cluttered to be unable to walk around in it... So much to be had with this ship's really amazingly designed base frame, yet so much wasted potential.
Also there's plenty of space within the ship model of the 315 to have the toilet sink into the floor and a fixed shower head above.. and having storage under it's sink/kitchenette area...
I don't understand why CIG purposefully withholds functionality.. Especially when there's plenty of space within the Graphical model for it... Unless they are just consistently making these small oversights as mistakes? As an easy fix, why not have added some removable ship "saddle bags".. imagine having compartments you could just bolt onto the outside of the ship. Messing up the Aerodynamocs a bit, yes, but as an explorer/pathfinder ship. Speed and Aerodynamics aren't what you should be after. More fuel and item storage should trump everything. You shouldn't be getting into fire fights or be in too much of a rush while exploring.
Also another wasted opportunity imo, is the 890 jump. All that flat open top deck space and no EVA deck with railings? Would be amazing to host unsuited, in atmosphere parties upon it's deck - like they do on modern super yachts... Except instead of floating on a river or the ocean, you could slowly cruise amongst/past the skyscrapers of Arccorp or around the megastructure of Hurston. or Even have Suited EVA shenanigans in an asteroid field or some other space point of interest, like modern scuba divers around reefs and wrecks...

I love my Terrapin. In the PU I have it equipped with stealth-class components, so even if the power and shields are medium-sized, I can still sneak around with no issues. It won't out-stealth a Talon or Eclipse or anything, but its signature is low enough that I use it when doing delivery missions or when I need to get somewhere undetected (Or whenever I'm hovering around Kareah to scout it out first when I accidentally get a crimestat and need to get rid of it). Just keep the weapons off and suppress IR and you're almost as stealthy as a stealth-kitted Arrow, IR and EM-wise. Though I imagine the Cross-Section signature has a big difference.
P.S. That clip at the end was hilarious.

I suspect that the 315 will excel at charting jump points and selling the navigation data. Other ships cant use it as an autopilot, but they can use it like GPS navigation to warn the pilot when to turn.
I expect that the Terrapin will excel at gathering data for other industry professions (ie: mining, fuel harvesting, flora for medication/drugs)
Both ships can do both, I suspect that they will have their strong suits.

  • @wun1gee

This variant should stay exactly how it is.
    We need other variants though.
U4A-1: No chair. RIO seat behind the pilot seat like the Cutlass. Add a 2nd bunk so it can actually support a crew of 2 without hot-bunking. Give it 20 SCU cargo space. Replace the utility slot with the chin turret from the Valkyrie (another old Anvil ship) slaved to the RIO seat. We know Anvil likes remote turrets. Again, see the Valkyrie. This would make for an awesome little 'blockade runner' and combat transport. Able to get small amounts of cargo into and out of dangerous locations and able to defend itself moderately well.
U4A-2: Same as above, no chair. RIO seat behind the cockpit. Remote turret slaved to the RIO seat. Removes ALL sleeping accommodations, including the microwave and head/shower. Removes the gun rack and storage too. Reenables the starboard side door and ramp. Adds in 2 rows of jump seats for troops. Also adds a pair of GT-210s to the doors like the Valkyrie. Basically, this version would be a small drop ship. More heavily armored than a Valkyrie but smaller and not able to carry as many troops. Sort of like a special forces infil/exfil transport when something the size of a Valkyrie is just too big.
U4A-4: No chair. RIO seat behind the pilot seat. Has the accommodations of the U4A-1 but replaces the turret with a torpedo launcher. Also in those grill-like structures that flank the cockpit you could put a bunch of size 3 missiles. This would be a missileboat variant.
Just a few things you could do with this spaceframe without even altering the model much at all. This little ship just screams "THROW ROLES AT ME PLEASE!!".. It's like the MRAP of the UEE and it should be every bit as versatile.

Also needs directional extra speed like supersonic something in between afterburner and orbital QT without the need of a marker for a quick exit of situations or reaching places faster.

The Terrapin reminds me of a sniper pair. Spotter and sniper, but here it's driver and system user(?), both made to stay out in the field for longer periods of time while relying on stealth to remain undetected while competing their mission. It's made to first and foremost protect it's crew, which is a very nice thing to see in a military ship. It's center seat could potentially be folded towards the roof when not in use to allow for additional space and it could easily be outfitted with seats for 10-20 men (if you ignore comfort) which in turn would allow it to act as a transport. I also see enough room for them to install a med bay allowing it to act as a Medevac. The circular mount-looking spot could potentially be used for a better long range directional sensor, a BFG or the new QED. I really like how it has the potential of like the black hawk chopper filling multiple roles in an army. Personally this is one of those ships i can see myself owning a long long time, constantly changing it's interior and exterior with new modules and functions. Hell it's about as big as my apartment and if added a kitchen... i wouldn't mind living there. :)

I'm fairly new to SC and thinking about what i'd do in game starting out, what ships i'd want etc. I have to say i LOVE the look and role of this ship. They really need to lean into the utility aspect and build modules to swap into that slot. I haven't pledged yet but if they had this ship in a package, yeah i'd be on board PDQ. That said I do think it needs another pass though. Maybe enlarge the cockpit for a second seat where the scan operator would sit(either side by side or inline). That would free up the center space for small cargo, medical bed, jump seats etc..
Edit: As someone new to SC your videos are invaluable in helping to understand the ships and the roles in game. You are probably the best creator right now so keep up the good work.

I much prefer the interior feel of the Terrapin because I feel like it gives me breathing room and has the shower in addition to everything else the 315 has. The price and lack of any SCU for spare parts hurts it though.

@@aesericho3651 Last time I flew the Terrapin was at the Expo last year and thoroughly enjoyed it then. I didn't even do anything productive with it, I just flew around sight seeing with it and had a blast.
The lack of cargo grid is the biggest thing that's bothering me about it. I don't want to run cargo with it, but I would like to be able to keep some spare parts for repairs or be able to pick up a box for a mission in the future and not worry about it flying around on the inside damaging the contents or even the ship like the devs said would happen in the future.
I feel like the 315p is an extremely good deal for the price you pay compared to what you get, in a similar vein as the Cutlass Black. That's where my hesitation comes in. The future is so uncertain with the Terrapin (since it's the test bed for item 2.0) that I'm worried about not being able to do just basic things with it that the 315p could do for over 3x the price.

Curious how crazy the durability of the Terrapin is if you divert all power to shields, have it landed, hulled down, and locked up. Reason I ask is if you find yourself being chased by pirates, would it be viable to bunker down and call for help? I doubt small-arms fire or even many rockets would do much to the thing.

It's still hard to judge what exploration ships are really going to be doing in the end.
    Especially the smaller ones.
Still, it is worth noting the nods to their function that do show up ingame already - you can particularly see this with the 315p, since it has close relatives for other roles.
And since for various reasons I ended up with a 315p, 325a and 350r...
It's worth noting the 12 SCU of cargo of the 315 is currently the largest for anything classified as a 'small' ship. - though this will undoubtedly change once the Hull A is available.
It's also worth noting that the 315p has 700 units of Quantum fuel to the other variant's 583 units.
Which is about 20% extra. It also has the most efficient quantum drive in the lineup.
For that matter, it really stands out when flying a 325a or a 350r especially how much more quickly these variants burn through hydrogen fuel compared to a 315p.
Do a trip from lorville to Area 18 in a 350r and you'll probably be down to about 30-60% hydrogen fuel on arrival depending on how you fly and any detours you took (Especially in atmosphere)
Do the same in a 315p and you'll likely be in the 60-80% remaining fuel range, if not more.
So there's definitely some substantial changes to the 315p's endurance, even if it's still not impressive compared to larger ships.
For comparison, a 600i doing the same route will be at 90+% hydrogen fuel if you abuse it, and may even regenerate enough in atmosphere to be at 99% or even 100% on arrival if you fly more gracefully.
Of course, a 600i is also an explorer - even mine, which has a touring module. But because the 600i is modular, rather than being a set of variants, it has the same basic performance regardless of internal equipment. (meaning the touring 'variant' still has explorer grade engines and scanners.)
So... it might not be dramatic, but explorers definitely do have extended endurance...

From what I remember reading about jump points years ago, they're going to have different sized 'tunnels' you will need to manually navigate through in order to chart them. The 315p with its improved maneuverability sounds perfect for the task of mapping the smallest jump points, it could be vital for finding the most cost-effective trade routes and selling that info to haulers.

What I would like to see are manipulators for the Terrapin replacing the weapon mount like those on a submersible, what I thought one role of the terrapin was going to be.
But in the end, for what the Terrapin brings to the field it is way to much overpriced. I have the feeling it needs a second utility hardpoint at the very least.
@14:22 The Terrapin has a microwave? Where? You also mentioned the possibility of other utility items instead of the dish. I thought that is something of the past.
All in all a good video.

I have other exploration ships for my org mates to specialize in as we do coordinated exploration of a given region or space. You had an earlier videos from a year or two ago and despite some minor changes, my interpretation of the advantages of customization and specialization is still critical for getting better, faster results.

If they fix the nicks of the 315p's ramp, the ship would make for a nice single person "vacation" craft that gives you enough amenities to have a very comfortable 3 days of off-grid camping and bike roaming, to then go back on station and refuel, get grocieries and have a full shower.
I don't see it as something you'd use to make a profit, at least not something the 315 would be advertised for, while there's a lot more potential (narratively) for the Terrapin... The Terrapin I feel like it missed the memo on being a logistics craft, or being versatile enough that it could be repurposed for logistics so extensively: The armour should be modular, as in, multiple armour packages should be available so you can choose to wear heavy armour, or shed a few dozen tons when planning a much longer trek without direct confrontations to significantly extend your fuel range and require much less power if you mean to hover a lot in atmosphere. The amenities should be geared for a crew of 3, so it's possible to cycle one person driving, one sleeping and one resting/backup in 8-hour periods for fresher minds on the job, and the crew of 2 should be for packages where space is at a premium. And the ship should have a cargo configuration, it just doesn't sit right that it doesn't when sounds like it wants to be a Space Bradley.

A factor now with FP mining. It is confermed that Terrapin can find hand minebel ores, 315P can not. And my reflection is that in the roll of scouting astroidsbelts, poseble landingzone's, the posbility of reveal if it is a valuble mining site or not is importent. Actually to a degree that I wonder if it is a error from CIG's side, that the 315P can not. (OMG, look at the lengt of that sentens!)

Agreed. I love the idea but EVERYTHING sounds first come first serve and they seem to have everything hand placed/painted thus leaving out the idea of finding undiscovered objects and locations as time passes.
With NPCs being reported to be capable of doing any careers a player can do means that not only are players competing with players but also with NPCs.
It would be a shame if exploration eventually gets regulated to 'salvage scouting' as anything but shipwrecks would be permanently discovered/logged/explored as ships can get wrecked dynamically all the time and get abandoned in fights or natural disasters but planets, ruins, moons, and such will not be randomized but just 'unknown at the start' until discovered, made known, and will forever remain fully exhausted in terms of discovery/exploration value.

I'm not sure if this is still true (for my part, it better be, because it's the reason I bought it), but one of the main selling points of the 315p when I bought it is the ability to map the actual traversal of new or otherwise unmapped jump points. And this data will be remarkably valuable, the amount depending on what's on the other side. That's going to be the main source of income for the 315p.

Part 1: Explore until you gather data worth selling.

Part 3: Sell information to people who can actually use that data and build a good rep.
