I've owned 4 Z-cars, including a 2015 370z Sport 6MT. My only complaints about that car were 1) Lack of telescoping steering wheel and 2) Crappy stock seats. It looks like the "new" Z addresses those concerns, plus adds power and technology. Here are my issues with this car: This is a parts bin car. It's clearly a tweaked 370z with an engine swap to a powerplant Nissan/Infiniti has already made for several years. That would be fine, except that in order to get one with an LSD and Akebono brakes (carried over from the 370z), you pay $50k+, and that's not even including inevitable dealer mark-ups. For comparison- Less than 3 years ago, you could buy a brand new 370z Sport (LSD, Akebono brakes, 19 inch Rays wheels) for under $35k. Nissan has essentially raised the price of the equivalent "new" Z by $15k+ over the 370z, without building a new chassis. That's not good for consumers. They've priced this to compete with the Supra, disregarding the incredible value proposition this car could have been. If we look at the base model, it's still $40k+. That might not seem bad, but it's still $10k more than what you could buy a base 370z for less than 3 years ago. It's also more than you can currently pay for a base Mustang GT or Camaro LT1. Even in the current inflated market, those cars are selling for under $40k in many parts of the country. You could buy a brand new 7th Gen Corvette for under $55k 2 or 3 years ago. As much as a love the Z, that's a better sports car. Even now there are used, low-mileage C7s out there for well under $50k. I think this Z34.5 would be a home run if the base model started at $35k, and the performance trim topped out at $42-43k. I just don't think we're getting enough "new" sports car for the price.
I agree. I rather buy the 86. It’s hard to justify 10k to jump on to the Base Z. The Z is really fighting against two Toyotas the 86 and the Supra. And the base z looses out to the 86 and performance z looses to the Supra manual
I completely agree. They should have started at 35k with a 300hp version to go with the 245 width tires and no LSD. Then a 10k jump in price would be legit for 100 more hp, better wheels/tires, LSD, etc.
I partially agree, yes I feel the price for a parts bin car is on the high side considering they just used left over parts and chasis. But if you think about it if you twin turbo a 370z sport (35k price like you mention), a properly tuned TT kit w/ supporting mods will put you right there with a 50k MSRP of this one, so basically you are just paying for a factory TT. They should have made one with an NA VQ37 and left it like you said.
Not only is this priced a little heftier than what I was expecting, but prepare for 15%+ dealer markups because of the enthusiast value, just like the GR Corolla will have and the Civic Type R had and still has.
As someone that has never owned a Nissan, this had my attention for a while. However, 50k for the “real” version of the car is too steep. I went from being willing to put in an order and waiting however long it took to get one to researching what cars I could get for 50k. In short, they just priced themselves out of a buyer who was willing to give Nissan a shot for a car in the 40’s but I’m not dropping 50k for that car.
I think if you just want a cruiser, then the base model will be fine and that is definitely in the 40s. I watched the Savage Geese video on the car and was really impressed about Nissan’s approach to making it a great performance car value, in my opinion.
Come on Nissan, an LSD is non-negotiable and must be included in all trim levels. You have my money if you can make it happen. The far cheaper BRZ didn't make that mistake.
I’m on the waitlist for the new Z; however, 51k is a little much for those cheap interior bits and road noise. I’ll wait for the manual Supra and new M2 before making my move. Sorry Nissan.
Same here might just go for the Supra though, I prefer the looks over the current m cars and the b58 while slower than the s5x engines, I think they sound much better for an inline 6
@@stevornrichards1380 Yep 22k can buy a lot of aftermarket parts to make a base model handle on rails and stop on a dime, especially if the 370z aftermarket transfers over. Can not wait to see what channels start doing with these!

$50,000 lol I remember when you could get a brand new 2015-2017 mustang 5.0 for 30k plus the supercharger to make 800+hp for $40,000 with full warranty!
The dollar lost ALOT of value. I remember when a gallon of regular gas wasn't $5. BTW this car will be smacking all those 5.0s with just a tune. Q50/Q60s do it with no problem and they are alot heavier and just luxury sedan/ coupes

@@jaredm4873no it doesn’t lmao this thing weighs a lot more and makes a lot less power to the wheels than the stock Supra. There’s been tons of drag races between the 3 and the Mustang/Supra pull ahead every time even on equal tires. 50K is a tough sale. Sure the Supra is a “BMW” but for the money you pay it’s actually worth it for the interior you get, the transmission is better and the engine definitely puts out more horsepower than advertised. The only option for the Z that makes sense is the base model. That interior in the Z has some super cheap looking stuff and you can tell where it shares 370Z parts with. Also lol no dual zone climate on a 50K car? That’s hilarious even muscle cars provides that.
I love how people say BMW like its a bad thing. Supra sounds better, is faster and can hold up to 1000hp from factory. Unless youre a brand dick rider, who gives a fuck how the car was put together, as long as the mother fucking thing performs, send that shit!
Suddenly that BMW M Coupe (sorry, meant GR Supra) is looking a lot better. Funny how that works. Lighter, faster, more confidence inspiring, better handling.
Looks amazing the front grille is growing on me. This is the first interior from a Z car I actually liked. Wonder if they switched to Michelins or a better tire would the rear end would be a little more planted? Excellent review Matt as always. Still the best! Up here in Canada gas is INSANELY expensive right now thanks to our Gov't. Premium fuel is well over $8 a US Gallon. I could see MPG affecting buyers up here if they chose this as a daily.
50k for the “performance” is insane, i agree with most that pricing should have been 35-40k base and performance at 45k. LSD should have been included in base, my 2022 BRZ WR Blue has LSD, heated seats and in my opinion a more updated / timeless interior than the new Z all for 32k
It’s priced pretty competitively considering. But no, your interior doesn’t look more updated and timeless then the z. Steering wheel is hideous and all the plastic around the screen and air controls is just not it.
I really appreciate you taking a reasonably critical approach to this review. I'm not particularly blown away by what I'm seeing from this new Z, especially for the money, but I'm sure that those who are seeking out this particular formula and/or really like the way this looks will be happy with their purchase.
The fanboy crowd will alway go get it no matter how the reviews are just like the supra back in 2019 but for the enthusiast crowd that really cares and are cross shopping, Nissan is not making it easy for people to chose the z over the supra, they really dropped the ball on the pricing.
@@Larkc-ty5sz for 50 grand there’s no shot that this new Z should actually be competitive, it’s punching way above its wieght in not only performance but also materials. I mean the supra is a bmw at the end of the day and this ain’t no mustang. Totally not worth it at all
@@Asiansxsymbol I think the majority of us were expecting these to be about 10% cheaper in all trim levels, and for an LSD to be accessible at all trims
@@SpartanArmy117 exactly. I've owned a loaded 2015 GT PP and 2020 GT350, and this car isn't anywhere on my radar because the value and "wow" proposition aren't really there, mainly because of that price and a few peculiarities. Oddly enough, I'm actively hunting for GR86s on the daily.
This car has so much more soul than the supra. At least there are some elements that tie it back to the older machines. Plus can anyone deny this looks sooo good?
It’s great to see a sports car with a manual like this. I just purchased a base 2022 BMW 230i coupe. It’s a fantastic choice. If you avoid the long list of options like the MSport and Dynamic handling package, it about $40k tops. It drive great with plenty of power with 255hp and 295 torque. The most fun to drive BMW on a budget!
Thank you. Everyone is chasing horsepower numbers and forgetting the connection between driver and car. I like going fast, but a well balanced car puts a massive smile on my face as well.
At 50k, it just ain't it. That's pushing supra territory used c7's etc. Cars that outshine the interior for sure and at 50k, it makes the heavy carry overs of the past 370z, noticeable. The performance upgrades over the sport is not worth 10k. But I do want an LSD just not for fucking 10k. Sad day indeed. I will no longer be buying this car. They not only let Toyota catch up with a manual supra, but after 2 years of waiting and scoping out the car, they hit me with 50k -_-. Nissan had it and very likely blew it for themselves. They "bragged" about how it was equipped with a 6 speed, which is what made it that much better.......like 2 years ago. Toyota will take this one indeed. smh nissan. disappointed.
I mean the Z is looking to be every bit as capable as the Supra and thus pretty close to the C7 Corvette.... The Supra's Manual is also rumored to cost 2-3K as an option, so I think most would be hard pressed to say the Supra with a stick is worth another 6-8K over the Z. This is also just the initial release of Z's, more options and packages are likely to come over the next few months that fill in the gap between base and top trims. But with that said the used car argument really has never really work especially with how used cars are priced right now, Its just not an apples to apples comparison as there are far too many variables and unknowns to take into consideration when buying used.
Used supras are going for over 55k. You'll be 60k out the door for a new one. The supra isn't 10 grand better than this car. Also, c7 stingrays are definitely faster, they don't hold up as well in other areas, especially the interior.
I really wanted to like this car, but at 50k it really doesn’t make sense when the manual Supra is just around the corner. Looking at that interior and seeing the same switchgear as my old 2005 G35 is such a turnoff
Appreciate the honest review. So many articles and videos on this car were done so without integrity. Always appreciate you looking at cars as a car enthusiast and not a salesman.
@@StrongerThanEver84 me personally in the 30k range would go for a gr86 and in the 40k range a mustang gt 50k has nothing that seems to be a good deal 60k pushing it base model zl1
The Z is a treat for the senses . Emotional satisfaction is a big part of the sports car experience, and the Z does this much better than the almost evil looking supra.
More competition is a good thing. If the Z didn't have a manual I wonder if the Supra would have ever come out with one. Either way, unless you are a Z enthusiast, the way this car is priced doesn't make much sense and I don't think buyers will gravitate towards it. The GR 86/Supra are too good in their respective categories.
The base Nissan Z is just under 40k, which is cheaper than the price of a 2.0 AUTOMATIC ONLY Supra. The 50k Nissan Z is slightly cheaper than the 51k base 3.0 Supra, and and cheaper than the 55k 3.0 Premium. I don’t know why people in the market wouldn’t gravitate for this car. GR86/BRZ buyers aren’t the same buyers. This car isn’t a Miata.
@@googleface5 I'm broke but I'd go for supra if I could at the very least because of active suspension and exhaust, they sound soooo good. I know you can always go aftermarket but that isn't coming right now and you don't really know what sound you'll get with an exhaust until you get it
I was originally under the impression that you had to get the performance edition to get the turbo 6, and 50k for 400hp sounded TERRIBLE compared to a base GT mustang or LT1 camaro putting out 450 for $35k. Finally getting corrected that its much closer to 40k for the base model that has the same engine makes me much happier about this car.
When they first teased it, I hoped it would be a clean slate design. Exterior styling is nice and there are some updates over the 370... but not enough to really justify the price. A used 370 might look old but it's going to be a bargain compared to this. At full new price, I think there's just too many other new designs that offer more performance and arguably more modern and higher quality interiors.
Too bad prices are stupid right now (or were last time I looked). Sat in a used 2020 370z base with 1k miles or so, asked for a price (last year). They were asking $39999.
In Australia these are selling for $20k less than the 6 cylinder Supra, I’m surprised the US market is getting screwed so hard, it’s normally the other way around. Personally these are a massive nostalgia trip, there’s a lot of 300zx in that interior with the cloth everywhere. No regrets with my order, it’s a Z, the interior is supposed to be cheap and durable (and UV resistant).
@Kerim Temel nope, 90k drive away is the Australian proto spec. We don’t get a base and performance model here. The 73k Z is the equivalent of the American performance model and sits at 80k drive away AUD.
Like everyone else, i was really disappointed on the pricing. If the performance was on the $43-46k it would’ve been better. $50k (plus taxes and destination) is just too much. And don’t even get me started with dealer markups that this thing is going to get.
Exactly! I've been waiting for this car since it was announced only to see that they really overpriced the Performance trim. This will easily be over 60k out the door with the crappy dealer markups. I'm going for the GR86 and save thousands. Heck, I can even get a used daily with the money leftover. It's ridiculous.
For 50k. Base Supra all day long. For my money at least. I do think it’s a good looking car in that blue though and I’ll be happy to see them on the road.
This car was introduced as a mid 30k dollar sports car for the masses and at 51k its everyday enthusiast allure loses its luster. The car has an interior that looks like it borrows materials from some of its 20k dollar Nissan mates. At 51k before dealer mark up, the Supra looks like a better choice and it's not ever really close.
Introduced when? 20 years ago? 30? It doesn't seem that you took into account inflation. If your numbers were adjusted for inflation you should have explained how.
Wow Matt, that acceleration was surprising. the first part of the video seemed so calm and disappointing but then it opened up! for 40kish this might be a good buy
Yeah the amount you save with the base model compared to the zupra you can get one awesome set of Öhlins Road & Track DFV coilovers and some sway bars to get that handling razor sharp, hopefully most of the 370z suspension goodies bolt right up.
We need to be very happy this car exists…even though (in the USA) there should have been a mid point model that offered the top spec brakes and diff. For me though, I’m happy with my 2022 BRZ and a bunch of change.
As exciting as the new Z is, I still can’t help thinking I’d rather buy the GR86. Sure not an apples to apples comparison, but I feel the GR86 offers a better driving experience for a whole lot less $$. Prob more practical of a daily sports car too..and more fun on a track.

Hmmm , Call me cynical but car companies are using the screen size to get you to upgrade to a far more expensive model.. I mean how much is an inch of screen worth ? 45 bux?
The upgraded trim is a whole lot more than just a "bigger screen." Forged Wheels and bigger tires are easily gonna be close to $2k. Limited slip? $1k easy. Heated leather seats? Easily over a grand. Bigger brakes? couple hundred easy. Sports exhaust? Close to $1k easy. Sports suspension? Over a grand easy. Add all that with a larger screen plus auto rev match and launch control? that's pretty much $10k right there if you upgrade that yourself

There is just no scenario in which someone in that market does not end up buying something else. What are they going for here? What’s the sell supposed to be?
@@Elchurrodurro I guess. I don’t know if consumers are cross-shopping the Z and the BRZ, but I’m sure some are and that’s was probably part of what determined the price point of the Z. I’m sure people loved the original and may have sentimental motivation but I can’t imagine that’s a very big market.
I suspect we will see a 300hp version start around 35k in a year or so. Nissan just wants the more potent version out first to capitalize on sales. It’s the same engine and tuning potential so the Z will be insane value once that version is out.

The Supra is definitely a better vehicle overall, this isn’t really premium in the slightest. The base model is such a good value though for the price.
What a beautiful car especially in blue. Years ago I wanted to trade my 350Z in on a new 370, I drove several on the freeway and it was the loudest car in terms of road noise I had ever driven. I’m mean really loud. The gearshift would vibrate and the engine at above 5000 rpm was harsh and thrashy. It was as if there was no sound deadening. I had to pass. I’m hoping those traits are gone because want a new Z!
It really looks like a great car, but I don't think I'd rather have it than my Supra. I'd buy the performance version of this b/c I'd hate myself not getting all the goodies, so the price would be similar, and similar performance in the real world it seems, which kinda makes it a toss up in terms of how it is to live with and aesthetics. In the aesthetics dept while I like the elements in this of the 240Z, the 370Z, and the 300ZX, it also feels like a bit of an identity crisis. Like the car doesn't have an identity of its own, it's just taking key elements of all parents past. So I'm not quite sold on the aesthetics. And in terms of living with this compared to the supra, this is probably a bit more livable it seems (softer suspension, more visibility, etc.), but those aren't things that bother me about the supra so I'm not really feeling the regret. I kinda like that laser-like German precision of the Supra and the suspension isn't really firm enough to bother me. It's worlds better than my 987 in terms of suspension compliance in the real world driving.
Thank you Matt for the thorough first look, I’m actually considering this car in about 8-10 months if budget allows. Also you’ve made the first 40 mins of work fly by! (Not much work had been done though 🤷♂️)
I think the price is fine personally, I trip out people bring up a mustang gt being 40k but that is for a bottom of the line one, I built one in the website with the options I wanted and it was 57k before tax.
Would be interested to see this car go directly against the Supra … seems Toyota / BMW did a bit more R&D with their car and Nissan is just recycling bits from the aged 370Z and aging Q50/60
They overpriced this by 8k. 42-43k, it's perfectly priced. at 51k, it should be dead in the war. Let's not pretend at the end of the day, this is not a car that is essentially a suped up version of a parts bind car. Outside of the shell, it's all reused parts.
Great review Matt! Thank you for doing this very detailed review. I think 51k is too much. I also think the lsd should be in the lower trim atleast as an option. I personally drive a Veloster N. I know it not close in power. However, just being able to experience all those feature for less makes the car more enjoyable. Hopefully the options will trickle down.
Slower cars are more fun. Enjoy your Veloster for everything it’s worth. I’ve had 335i, Porsche Cayman GTS and more and my favorite cars have been slower ones. You can really row through the gears, hammer the throttle to redline and simply enjoy it more. 0-60 in 3 seconds means you can almost never really get on it.
With the amount of cost cutting you would think it would get passed down to the customer as savings. But nope unfortunately still 50K, at that point you might as well get the Supra.
I waited for more info on this platform before would decide if it was a good value. Adding 10K for the LSD, brakes etc., is a deal breaker for me. At 39K and used as a daily driver that's the best return for the money. Question is how many buyers look at it from that point of view? The other platform I was looked at is the C8. Looks like that's the path I'll take.
I'm happy you told the truth about the car. I've always been a Z fan, but have lost a lot of faith in Nissan. The new Z will be a hit with the Z community but it's lacking a lot for a modern sports car. I think as you mentioned, the Supra will be the better car dynamicly. It's a shame the don't offer any type of adjustable suspension ( electronic dampers /magnetic ride ) at all for the Z. That's honestly a deal breaker for me. And I'm assuming the Z doesn't have adjustable steering as well or any type of "track mode"? Just a display change ? I'm glad they are making an accessable sports car at a decent price point - but for the money, I think I'll just stick with a 1le Camaro or entertain a Supra manual when they are released. There's too much of the 370z and 350z in the "new Z". It's like Nissan went shopping in the parts bin and fitted everything to a 20 year old 350z FM chassis.
I think it is near-unanimous, Nissan blew it on the pricing. The original Z was an unheard of performance bargain back in it's day. This car had the potential to be the legendary performance bargain of our era. As it is priced/configured now, it will only appeal to those with particular use cases: Nissan nostalgia nerds, styling preference, more relaxed gt feel/visibility over Supra, etc. I think Nissan bought into the hype but the hype was for 400hp on the cheap, and 50k ain't cheap. Hopefully Toyota doesn't make the same mistake with the GR Corolla, which at the end of the day is still a Corolla.
The original z was also carbureted, single cam, naturally aspirated, had no amenities, no safety features, and had thin metal. Of course it doesn't compare.
Was really hoping the performance would come in at $45-47k. $50k is too much and makes me want to look at higher trim cars like the Supra manual or M2 comp or new M2. This car was only on my radar and most others of it was a bargain. It still is in this economy but not as much to justify all of its shortcomings. I don’t see $10k worth of upgrades to go from sport to performance. I’d rather take the $10k saved and put in coil overs, lsd, recaro seats, big brakes, and maybe an exhaust. I imagine most will be doing the same, especially in a few years once deprivation finally kicks back in and you can get one used for $30k.
Inflation. Your money doesn’t go as far as it used to therefore 50k isn’t 50k when the 370 came out. Plus a stiffer chassis, way more power and torque, LSD etc make it a good package for the money.
Delete if not allowed but for everyone concerned about dealerships marking them up, State Line Nissan in Kansas City will not be doing any market-adjusted pricing on these. DM me if you wanna be put on the call list when ordering is available.
Not so sure about the pricing when compared to the Ford Mustang, Toyota Supra, and Toyota/Subaru 86 platform. It seems like it handles similar to the Ford Mustang Ecoboost. If you want a raw sports car on a budget, the GR86/BRZ seems like the way to go. If you want some creature features but some rawness, you will go with the Toyota Supra 2.0 or 3.0. If you want less raw and more premium then you can go Ford Mustang Ecoboost or GT.... Tough competition. Personally, I would go for the Supra if I was cross-shopping sports cars around the $50k mark.
The fake wooden wheel on my 240 had the finger notches on it but, the one feature I think would have been cool was if they put the interior door handles down at the bottom of the door like the 240-280Z's.
Thorough review Matt. 👍 I watched the other Matt (Farah) review this car and you both seem to be impressed with the Z. For me, I'll go with your driving impressions, however, I think the styling is dated and too plain since they tried to blend THREE model Zs into one. Overall, I'm glad this simplistic manual Nissan below $50k exists. 👌
Excellent review with more than just the superficial - actually thinking and comparing to the competition. The one thing I want to know is whether you can actually feel the double wishbone front suspension hardware giving you an advantage in corners. In the GR86 there is a little stickiness in the front suspension on bumpy corners from those struts that cause the front to skip a little. Being that the Z weighs 700+ lbs more, possibly the feel of the double wishbone is not there as much as it could be. I would think this would also be an advantage over the Supra, but it didn't seem like you noticed a difference. I realize strut can be pretty good if it's well designed and built.
Thanks, I'm glad you liked it! I didn't feel much difference in the front suspension with the double wishbone on these roads that were in pretty good shape overall.
My top two choices for next car will still be between the Camaro 2SS 1LE and manual Supra. The new Z seems overpriced to me for what you're getting. I thought Supra was overpriced because BMW, and that the Z would easily undercut it, but that didn't really happen. The top spec Z should be $40-45k at most. The backup camera looks 480p and the touchscreen looks like it functions about like a sub $100 android tablet from Walmart.
If you notice lack of boost, you can then look at the turbo rpm gauge. If it seems to be spinning normally, then you know you have a boost leak. If not - gotta be exhaust leak before the turbo or a ceased turbo :)
Great review Matt! I'm not in the market but I appreciate the critique on this car. Seems like everywhere I looked I saw nothing but praise for it and hearing a little bit of the opposite is nice. I drive a Mustang GT with a manual and I am not looking for a replacement but like many of us, I am always window shopping. 😛 Again, great job!
All these losers in the comments complaining about price. If you can't afford it go buy a Civic. We live in a time that a GTI costs $40-45k. A rwd 400 hp sports car is a bargain for that price.
@@jasper_of_puppets No. But the Nissan delaers where I live are a sad joke. I would drive 8 hours out of my way just to not have to deal with them, assuming I'd ever want a Nissan to begin with.
I'm not sure what Nissan is thinking. I have a 2017 370z Sport, which I love. The upgraded brakes, 19" Rays wheels, front and rear spoiler, limited slip differential, rev match 6-speed manual transmission and 8 speaker Bose stereo were all STANDARD, starting around $33K (only $3.5K more than the Base model). Now you only get those features if you spend $51K.
If you look at the overdrive gear for the manual, they really seem to have messed up since it's way worse than the automatic. That's why the mpg is so bad. They should've taken a page out of the TR6070's book.
I can tell this is gonna be a car i would highly enjoy you review confirming its set up with the things i really like good torque, good turbo , looks like a fantastic car. Awesome review 👏
I've owned 4 Z-cars, including a 2015 370z Sport 6MT. My only complaints about that car were 1) Lack of telescoping steering wheel and 2) Crappy stock seats. It looks like the "new" Z addresses those concerns, plus adds power and technology.
Here are my issues with this car:
This is a parts bin car.
@@DrHistoryV A twin turbo VQ37 makes a lot more power than the 3.0 TT in the new Z.
Yea you’re right, but considering a new GTI SE is $42k (absurd), it starts to look pretty good…..or not as bad.
Not only is this priced a little heftier than what I was expecting, but prepare for 15%+ dealer markups because of the enthusiast value, just like the GR Corolla will have and the Civic Type R had and still has.
Deadass. Type R been out 5 years and selling for 48k+
you wont find one for less than 70k sadly
Wait until Christmas. They will be stacking up on dealer lots.
We all have to refuse to pay markups.
Why is that with the type R? Do they make less than say, the last sti or the wrx. The markups aren’t really as bad with Subaru
@@SpartanArmy117 yes but then you'd have a Ford mustang wouldn't you lol nah I agree with OP 40K was the appeal

Everything is spot on but 2 things. 1: Fuel door is WAY to big. 2: Lower exposed grille needs a body color matched panel with vents to clean up the bottom part better.
Excited you got to review one Matt!! 🔥
Price really killed it, especially for the cheap interior bits. Manual Supra on the horizon, definitely has my eyes now
Also, a 6th gen SS 1le will out price and run laps around this thing. They really dropped the ball on price to performance
Yeah, and the camaro LT1 cost way less
@@Luke-cb3ly American performance just kills it with price to performance. These imports keep lacking behind
At least the Supra has quality interior, top notch track and drag times, incredible looks and a manual on the way. Even if it is a tad bit overpriced, it’s the only current import I can somewhat justify the price mark
Well the 6th generation Camaro is outdated and the Supra is ugly as hell. I go for the 400Z over those cars any day.
@@bh2155 outdated? the Camaro's infotainmant system is better than the Z's, and so is the ten-speed automatic. and the Camaro's suspension and chassis are even better. it's a 2+2, it has more power, more torque, it's faster on the track and on the straights... don't get me wrong, but the Z should be at most 42k. Compared with Supra, Camaro 1LE, Mustang Mach 1 it's pretty hard to like the Z.
@@Luke-cb3ly I do agree the Z is overpriced. The Camaro maybe the better performer. However for me appearance counts and with the exception of a few minor refreshes in the grill, front and rear head lights the Camaro looks basically the same as it did 12 years ago.
I was considering a performance trim Z until the price was revealed. I could accept $4k-$5k above the base car, but $10k? I removed my name from the dealers wait list and will now purchase the Mazda MX5 instead. Way to go Nissan by pricing your affordable sports car above $50k!
Why not just buy the base model and spend 3k upgrading the brakes and suspension? The performance brakes aren’t great anyways and would need upgrading to track anyways.
@@sawyercrosby3710 the base model dosent have the lip spoiler along with getting smaller brakes compared to the performance model.
@@sawyercrosby3710 Definitely, the base model is the better buy and upgrade it over time with brakes, suspension and wheels
@@bonda_racing3579 the brakes on the performance aren’t anything to brag about from what I’ve heard. They used bad brake pads so those would get replaced anyways. The spoiler I can live without. I’ll probably buy a sport in November or December then upgrade the brakes and suspension myself. Hopefully the rear dif is still the same dimensions as the 370 so I can get an LSD as well. All in all itll cost me around 4k to get it to spec with the performance.
Why not just get new Supra or wait till manual supra
I think if they just put the LSD in the base trim or made that an option for that trim it would fix the pricing issue. That’s really the only necessary upgrade for the performance trim IMO.
I agree, charging 42-43k for the Sport with an LSD would have made a lot more sense.
Agree. For a 400hp car LSD is NOT optional. If it had been standard equipment in the base at $42k the trim difference would still be $8k.
Nissan might have left it out in order to reach an desired price point. Too clever by half.
sweet bro!! Nice review. I had fun with mine this week too!
Thanks man! That’s awesome you got a press car so fast!
@@MattMaranMotoring - You should test drive the 2022 base 230i BMW Coupe. I just bought one. It’s great and I got it for about $35k. Real nice new design with beautiful interior. No need to get the much more expensive M240i or even get the MSport or Dynamic handling option. T green is 230i is an incredibly fun car to drive. It’s rear wheel and has a 50/50 weight distribution. I hope BMW copies Toyota Supra example.
@@rembo183 damn.. in Spain this car costs 52k euros
Can't wait to see one in person
Hmmm , Call me cynical but car companies are using the screen size
to get you to upgrade to a far more expensive model..
I mean how much is an inch of screen worth ? 45 bux?
If screens had more things to do it would matter but 95% of people just use music and maps

@@ciello___8307 the big break akebono's for my z32 is over 2 grand for front and rear lol.
@@Luke-PlanesTrainsDogsnCars in the Z's case it's pretty obvious that the selling point of the expensive trim is the performance goodies, and not the screen. . .
Yeah… they did totally drop the ball on pricing. This could have been a fantastic sell if it started at $30 or $35k base, $40k for the higher end trims. There is just no scenario in which someone in that market does not end up buying something else. What are they going for here? What’s the sell supposed to be?
Wouldn't starting at 30-35k take away from the premium brz ?
@@Elchurrodurro I guess. I don’t know if consumers are cross-shopping the Z and the BRZ, but I’m sure some are and that’s was probably part of what determined the price point of the Z. It’s just hard to imagine you could find a lightly used GT350 for $60k or a fully-optioned, more practical, more powerful Mustang GT (for example) for the same price…. Why would anyone get the Z? I’m sure people loved the original and may have sentimental motivation but I can’t imagine that’s a very big market.
I suspect we will see a 300hp version start around 35k in a year or so. Nissan just wants the more potent version out first to capitalize on sales.
It’s the same engine and tuning potential so the Z will be insane value once that version is out.
the exterior is absolutely stunning and sleek, but man the interior is looking already outdated
Yea but that's what this car is all about. It's about sporty performance, handling, and self shifting. It's not supposed to be luxurious.
@@jonlosito2004 no. It's not. Nissan is lazy. They had the same interior in the 370z for a decade. This is on par.

Had a 370z myself, that interior door panel is an exact copy of it 100%. Lazy to see that and that cheap and flimsy center console. Nitpicks? Probably. Expect better for their asking price? Definitely.
As a former 370z owner, I was thinking the same. There's a ton in the interior that's direct carry-over from the 370z. Like more than half of it.
370z still looks better IMO. Especially the headlights!
I have a Nismo 370Z(V2) now. With turbos. There's not enough difference with this Z for me to upgrade. Road noise even sounds similar.
It's the same chassis it's still a z34 because it was too expensive for Nissan to get a new chassis certified by the Japanese government so there's going to be a bit of carryover
@@nhilist5774 Yeah I understand that. I guess it’s just disappointing to see the exact same door panel and center console. Like with the door AC vent, I understand there’s not much they can do with that but still could have redesigned it some.

The
gearshift would vibrate and the engine at above 5000 rpm was harsh and thrashy.
I like your ability to not trash either car, a true car enthusiast! 👏🏽

Thank you Matt for the thorough first look, I’m actually considering this car in about 8-10 months if budget allows. Also you’ve made the first 40 mins of work fly by! (Not much work had been done though 🤷♂️)
I think the pricing perfectly fits below the Supra. Y’all saying $50k is too much, really believe the Supra at $60k is a better value?
I'm not sure where you live but here in the U.S. a Supra 3.0 is 52k if you go on Toyota's website.
Nah the supra won against the Z
Hagerty uploaded that video on their channel today. It was interesting. Go check it out.
@@alexmaccain2362 Nah, for the price, the base Supra 2L is much much inferior. The 9-sp auto will be competitive with the Supra auto.

@@phines93 cars do not get gapped as hard as the Z did simply because of tires.
They overpriced this by 8k. 42-43k, it's perfectly priced. at 51k, it should be dead in the war. Let's not pretend at the end of the day, this is not a car that is essentially a suped up version of a parts bind car. Outside of the shell, it's all reused parts.
Nissan blew it.
@@curttheboywonder I had that issue with a Camaro SS. No one could touch me but I couldn't open it up all the way ever.
As a fellow Veloster N owner as well...it's a really fun vehicle and experience.
Sucks they didn’t upgrade the key fob. For $50k there is quite a bit of cost cutting through out the vehicle.
Deal breaker for me too 2022 Camaro 1SS 1LE for me instead 44k 3x the options same weight more power….better buy
This Car remembers at the 3.0 Twin Turbo fom the 90th. Great Performance ! Congratulations Matt
Great review Matt. You didn't hold back and we appreciate that!
As @gameplay_unknown states …35 base, 45 performance would’ve been a home run….Nissan absolutely dropped the ball here
I think it is near-unanimous, Nissan blew it on the pricing.
GR Corollas will be super pricey and impossible to come by. Mark it down.
The V6TT engine in the Z is costly to manufacture.
The 40k base is a bargain compared to a 6 cylinder supra.
The original z was also carbureted, single cam, naturally aspirated, had no amenities, no safety features, and had thin metal. Of course it doesn't compare.
@@povertyspec9651 costly how? It has been out for 6+ years. What are they doing wrong if they haven't streamlined that by now?
Sport + $1500 for mech LSD & full spare (prefer Sport's non-stagger) = winner. At $51, it's a pass. Sadly, Nissan blew the packaging.
Thanks for the video :) We love it.

That grill will hold a nice FRONT MOUNT INTERCOOLER 👍🏾
Superficial comment here, that thing looks miles better than the Supra, clean with a retro touch. Well done Nissan
the BMW Z4 Supra rear end looks like it had a double stoke and that front end it hideous.
I'm really thinking hard about this Z? I will have to take a test drive one before I make a decision...
Aint no one getting the 40K version with no LSD, that's a joke. Plus markup is going to be a lot anyway. Still think the Supra is way better.
400hp car with no LSD? Crazy. I'm not even a car expert and I know that.
As a Supra owner....
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Only a mad man would buy this over a supra one m2 or pony car
I like it. But … was the front in an accident ?
The fake wooden wheel on my 240 had the finger notches on it but, the one feature I think would have been cool was if they put the interior door handles down at the bottom of the door like the 240-280Z's.
I'll be waiting for the Nismo version although pricing will be a concern, I'm guessing minimum +$10k if/when they do the Nismo.
Thorough review Matt. 👍
I watched the other Matt (Farah) review this car and you both seem to be impressed with the Z.
My 2017 $25K Civic Si offers adaptive dampers, Limited Slip Dif, and heated seats. All things that the 40K Z doesnt have. What a joke.
Your civic is also a 1.5t fwd and based an economy car that gets a shit load of sales through normal people why even compare the two so dumb
You are talking about a civic 😄😂that is not in the same class as this car.
I think the Supra looks so much more beautiful

You think any dealer where you live is gonna let these new Z leave the lot without a fat markup?
