The song is a centuries-old traditional poem/verse about a girl who frees herself from a curse. The screams are an old chant/decoy, which the milkmaid used to lure the livestock back to the farm. The instrument Nøkkelharpe is considered Sweden's national instrument, but it has traditionally been used in both Swedish and Norwegian folk music.

So the lyrics aren't really theirs?

No, it's not theirs. The verses are from the Middle Ages, and hardly anyone knows the original author - that is the reason if no author is given. Gåte themselves say it is a thousand years old, and that they have set a melody to it.

Then that might be a problem in Eurovision and they may have to change the lyrics. Go_A had to do the same thing as the original lyrics of Shum were from an old folk song.

@@maxfi878 NRK (Norwegian broadcaster) is professional in the game, so I guess everything is under control. They might have changed the lyrics enough already. I know they have worked on the song for a long time.

The instrument is a nøkkelharpe, can be tracked back to 1400 centry in the paintings from that time.
For the info, for those who compare them to Go_A :
Gåte have been making music since 1999 - Go_A have been making music since 2012. They have always been true to their music.
I hope you will take your time to listen to their song Svarteboka (that they made with another band called Varg) - it will give you goosebumps.

Gåte is the name of the band. The singer - Gunhild - has her roots in Norwegian folk music, as her Brother, and together they formed the band when Gunhild was about 13-14 years old (her brother is a fiddle player in the band, and also one of the creative heads behind this). Later this year, he quit the band to focus on other stuff (probably maybe also bc he wasn't to keen on joining the MGP cirkus). The step in fiddle player now is John Stenersen, from the band wardruna.
Gunhild has been asked to join MGP before, with a pre written tune made for her. But - she wouldn't join without her band and their specific sound and vibe.
The band also had along break in the 2000 and something, when Gunhild quit the band. She startede young, and they had great success nationally, and in some way it all got a bit overwhelming for her. In the break she has worked as a actor both in musical plays and ordinary theather in her home town Trondheim.

John Stenersen is also the leader/only founding member left of the female-fronted Norwegian Folk Rock/Metal band Bergtatt, who released two albums titled "Røtter" (2009) and "Lagnadsoger" (2013) which might also appeal to fans of Gåte. There is also a recording of their concert at Barba Negra in Budapest in 2016 to be found on youtube with decent quality, which includes two (new) songs which haven't been released yet, one of them being a rendition of "Varulven", which Garmarna already played on their album "Guds Spelemän" (1996). BTW, Gåte are also fans of Garmarna.

Nøkkelharpe was also used in the Norwegian vinner from 1995 Nocturne.

What the vocalist does right at the beginning of the song sounds like a herding call to me (it's called kulokk in Norwegian). A perfect and much longer example of this can be heard in the clip titled "Cow Calling" by the (now defunct) Finnish-Swedish Folk Rock band Gjallarhorn here: th-cam.com/video/u3B46t8VoVM/w-d-xo.html
Since you were intrigued by the guy playing the keyed fiddle, also check out this live performance of his own (Folk Rock/Metal) band Bergtatt from 2016, during which he also played another traditional instrument called hurdy-gurdy: th-cam.com/video/rrcHo3jdcU8/w-d-xo.html
As regards Gåte, do yourself a favour and check out all their music and especially live videos on their official channel! I don't think you will be disappointed.
