  • Today we made a swinging parallelogram actuating baby gate! (It swings and also moves up and down is the simple description.) We used ash for this build and finished with danish oil and wipe on polyurethane.
    Write up and pictures from our first baby gate:

    The expression on the baby's face at 6:04 when he comes to check progress is priceless. It reminded me so much of my little girl who loved to climb, and expressed equal outrage at her freedom of mobility being challenged by a blockade!!!
    We're past that stage now, but it's a great project and it came out looking really great. Thanks for taking the time to make and post it.

    This video was the starting point to inspire my baby gate. Fortunately/unfortunately, between then and last week when I started building it, I had to travel for work, made my memory a little fuzzy with bourbon, etc. I had forgotten your diagonal pieces intended to limit travel, and instead built my stops into the center section of each rail by cutting 90° stops for one side of each upright, and a 30° range of motion on the other side. There was a lot of swearing when I double checked your video just now over extra time and effort spent reinventing the wheel, but I was able to justify buying a new jig saw, and it has a little bit of my touch on it now.

    Looking good, Tyler. The stain really matches the staircase, and the "latching" mechanism is completely hidden.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      wordsnwood Thanks for watching! The stain matched better than I though it wood, oak stairs and ash gate, but those species are very similar.

      ***** I'm told that Ash was traditionally known as "Poor Man's Oak", since you could make it look like oak very easily, and it was cheap. With the Emerald Ash Borer issue, that might no longer be true, I don't know about that...

    i used this design but i made a 70'' one. they are way to expensive at the store. like 130+$$ so i make mine out of pallets and stuff from work the only thing i had to buy was the wooden dowell rods. works great. i love the design. so im going to make one for every openening i need.

    a swinging gate would be nice for outside stairs,
    (there are no walls were to screw screws) so dogs or any other kind of animal can't go up the stairs of the house. "that would be awsome".

    The Poly you used over the Danish Oil, is it oil based? Did you have to wait until the Danish Oil was completely dry before applying the Poly?

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Louis Roulain Yes the Poly was oil based. I believe I waited two days before applying, although I have done it in less time in the past. I have also put water based poly over danish oil but for that you want to make sure it's properly cured. Thanks for watching Louis!
