    Brien Taylor. 1st overall pick by the Yankees in 1991. Signed for 1.55m. Got in a fist fight and totally wrecked his arm. Never pitched above AA in his career before retiring. There's your biggest bust in MLB History.

      @rslitman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tom Fans of the then-25 other teams no doubt were thinking, regarding Taylor, "At least it was a Yankee that it happened to." Okay, too cruel to think. After all, given the way the Yankees often trade top prospects for established major leaguers that represent one more piece in the pennant-chasing puzzle, any one of the other teams (including one of the 1990s expansion teams) could have wound up with a great pitcher in Taylor. So, no, just because he was a Yankee did not make it a good thing.

The scout said it was the biggest turnout he had ever seen. From all the guys i met and spoke with i was the only one even from Va. I remember them being shocked by how close by i was. The scout told us out of the 13 years they had been doing open tryouts only 1 person had ever been signed, but never made it to mlb.

    • @gjchawks17

      This happens all the time in the baseball draft. This isn't something he randomly thought. The signing price of the #1 pick during those times was between 5.5 to 8 million dollars. Garret Cole 8M, Strausburg* 7.5M, Bubba Sterling 7.5M (#5 overall) ... Hell Kris Bryant got more at 2nd overall (6.7M).
      *- Strasburg's isn't the true amount because of the now illegal contract that Washington give him (legal at the time).

    • @el_duderino_man
      @el_duderino_man 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      American hitters are a risk to take high in a draft because they have played with aluminum bats their entire amateur careers. A lot of college sluggers never amount to anything when they start using wooden bats. Pitchers seem to be a safer bet. I can see why they would pick a pitcher when they already feel they will have the best offense in the league. In fact getting Beltran to mentor the young hitters is what they needed and fit the mold better for the Astros than Bryant would have. Beltran made an entire team hit better. Byant hit good himself. Astros are World Champions now so it is what it is.

    • @TheGoldenGreek21
      @TheGoldenGreek21 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steven Hensley I think they are to a certain extent. Like in football, Penn State has had a series of tailbacks drafted in the first round in the past couple of decades; for every Curt Warner or Larry Johnson (who had fairly strong careers), guys like Blair Thomas, Ki-Jana Carter, D.J. Dozier, and Curtis Enis all fizzled. Some had injuries, sure, but there are a lot of circumstances that don’t translate well to success at the next level. Appel had his warts; they were mostly obscured by certain circumstances he was in.

    As an Astros fan I feel for the guy, in that he was supposed to be the guy in the rotation. But heck, we paid too much for little production and at least got Giles out of it(which is a questionable trade at this point anyway though lol)

    You missed the opportunity to make a Zach Lee Mark Appell Dodgers Astros video. They were both awful busts. Zach Lee eventually had 2 or 3 good games with the Padres but he was supposed to be the next great RHP for the dodgers to compliment Kershaw. He signed a 5M bonus and got utterly decimated by the mets in his debut (plenty of errors behind him). I even saw him warm up in a game in LA against Colorado. He never got in. He never pitcher in LA. He made one start in NYC and never again got a chance in Dodger stadium. Sad but these dudes got 5 and 6 million dollar bonuses. They'll be alright.
    Reminds me of how greedy Matt Harvey was with the angels when they first drafted him and refused to sign because he wanted a 3M dollar bonus. Maybe this is why Harvey is shit now. Greed and no passion for the game.

    Excellent video Dawson! What a true waste of talent. As a Giants fan, J.R. Phillips was a pretty big bust for us. Will Clark was a free agent and the Giants didn't bother to offer him a descent long term contract (because they felt Phillips could replace him) so he went to the Rangers and Phillips became the everyday starting 1st baseman....results were he never broke the Mendoza line and was constantly injured while Clark went on to have pretty descent seasons for the Rangers averaging .308, 15 HR's, 80 RBI for the 5 years he played for Texas.

    I live in the QC area and remember Appel and Correa on the Bandits and all the hype surrounding them, being two top prospects. Pretty cool to see Correa turn out to be the player he is. Too bad Appel couldn't live up to expectation as well.

    • @orbyfan
      @orbyfan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's interesting to imagine how things would have been different for the Mets and Reggie (and the A's) if they'd drafted him. As for Chilcott, if he hadn't been drafted instead of Reggie, he would be so obscure that he wouldn't even be the answer to a trivia question.

  • @aklestinec
    @aklestinec 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good vid. The Astros might have another big bust in draft history the year after with Brady Aiken. His story is interesting as well. I saw another guy posted about Brien Taylor from the 90s and I think it’s tough to beat that one, but Appel for sure is up there.

    In a way his arrogance at demanding to be #1 pick in the 2012 draft and wanting over $6 million should have showed warning signs.The guy was just interested in the money....No surprise he was a bust and awful in the minors...Looks like he really had no heart or desire to get to the big show once he got that signing bonus.

    • @danlorett2184
      @danlorett2184 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah. He got that signing bonus AND was able to finish his degree. 70% of drafted pitchers never hit the majors. The only reason it seems like a big deal in this case was because people hyped him up so much. You're telling me if you were in his position and you're projected to go #1, you're not going to try to get the most money? I would.

    I’m an Astros fan since as long as I can remember. I was so glad they didn’t draft him after his junior year. They chose wisely by not paying him all that money. Didn’t mind picking him the next year. He never did anything special in the farm system. We in Houston pay close attention to our farm systems. Especially since it’s how our team just won a championship. Shows just how greedy the guy really is. How many of us would turn down $3 million.
