Nationals 2019 season. Started 19-31. Came back in the wild card after losing 3-0. Came back from a 2-1 series deficit against dodgers and were losing 3-0 in game 5. In the World Series went up against cheaters an miraculously won every game on the road. Were also down 3-2 in that series and were losing 2-0 in the 7th.

There’s such a thing as ROAD field advantage. The 2016 Cubs are a case in point. They got to hit DH Kyle Schwarber (.412) in 4 games instead of three, and getting away from the immense pressure of the Wrigley Field crowds was a tonic for the team; they won 3 out of 4 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

What about the Nationals from last season. They were 4th in their division in May and won the World Series as a Wild Card team. Oh and they beat the two best teams in baseball that year en route to their World Series win: the 106 win LA Dodgers and 107 win trash can banging Houston Astros. They also won all of their games on the road, in Houston. No professional sports team had won 4 games on the road in a best of 7 series until the Nats did it.

@@jaredchacon2645 The Nats were 19-31 on May 23rd of last year & only the Miami Marlins had a worse record in the National League at the time. From that point on the Nats won 74 of their remaining 112 games( a .660 winning percentage during that stretch, which, ironically enough would've matched the Houston Astros' winning percentage over a full season which is how the Astros actually finished last season ). Then add on the fact that they knocked off both the Dodgers & Astros, the teams with the 2 best records in baseball last season, while winning 8 of 9 games on the road in the postseason including all 4 games in Houston in the World Series....considering how far down in the standings they were on that day in late-May, definitely a remarkable in-season comeback by the Nationals, & winning their 1st World Series championship after a string of October disappointments leading up to last year....incredible stuff.

I think some pretty significant parts about the Cardinals run were left out, they were 10.5 games back of the wild card on August 24th, and won it on the final day of the season, and then were down 2-1 in the NLDS vs the top ranked Phillies and won the last two. Chris Carpenter out dueled Roy Halladay, the Cardinals scored a run in their first two batters of the game, and that was the only offense, game ended 1-0.

2011 Cardinals should be higher imo just because of everything that had to go right just to make the postseason

    • @ckendall67
      @ckendall67 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Much like Dawson pointed out, that's a Series that I really enjoyed watching as well. And the Cardinals were literally not even in the postseason discussion with about 30 games left that season, I think I remember Tony LaRussa said he just told his players 'Let's just finish this season on a positive note that's all', even LaRussa had doubts they would even have a shot at the playoffs but then the Cardinals gradually started stringing together wins, the trades they made in late-July, those players gradually started contributing to the team's late surge, and at the same time the Braves noticeably began to sputter when they had such a big lead in the wildcard standings. Next thing you knew it's the final week of September and the Cardinals are still in the thick of the playoff race while the Braves can't stop the bleeding. Eventually the Cards finally overtake the Braves on the final night to secure the wildcard, but that was only the beginning; then they upset the Phillies who were considered the best club in baseball that year. Then they faced their divisonal rivals the Brewers in the NLCS & again the Cardinals weren't expected to have a chance but they knocked off the Brew Crew as well. And then finally the Texas Rangers who at the time were probably the best team over in the A.L. 7 games, the Cards are on the brink & the Rangers look like they would win their 1st WS championship...but we all saw what happened. Incredible stuff. I'm a Blue Jays fan but I've often considered the Cardinals as my favorite team in the National League. :-)

ckendall67 plus they won the World Series. Comebacks to me mean nothing if you get hot to just get in to playoffs only to lose in first round. Cardinals won World Series which is why I think it like if Redsox lost in World Series in 04 the comeback against Yankees coming back from 3-0 wouldn’t mean it. Angles should go up to against Giants.

Being a Giants fan the Reds and Cardinals comeback were some of the best times as a fans especially game 5 of the NLCS when Zito had one the best pitching performances in SF Giants playoff history. I believe his time in SF was vindicated with that start because prior to that Zito was considered a free agent bust and would get dragged through the mud countless times by fans and radio personalities on KNBR.

The Cardinals were also down 10.5 games on August 23 behind the Braves for the Wildcard in 2011. The Cardinals would finish the rest of the season with a 23-9 record, while the Braves finished with a 11-19 record. The Cardinals won the Wildcard by 1 game (they swept the Braves in a 3 game set during their run)! They also were down by a very good Phillies team in 2011's first round by 2-1, only to beat them 3-2. The final game of that series was Chris Carpenter against Roy Halladay (RIP), both pitchers closed the game, Cards won 1-0! We all know what happened after that "ahem game 6 World Series" lol! It's one of two times (the other at the EXPENSE of the Indians) that a team managed to pull of a win after a 12-run deficit. Old video so I don't expect a response but...for single game comebacks for me its April 17, 1976 Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs. Cubs were up 13-2 to start the fifth inning. Mike Schmidt then hit 4 consecutive home runs and the Phillies won 18-16 in the 10th inning.

Game 5 of the 1929 World Series was also a comeback. The A's were down 2-0 going into the bottom of the 9th, and scored three runs in the 9th to win the World Series.

Well done list! I was happy to learn about Lou Brissie. However, what about the 2007 Colorado Rockies? Coming back in the regular season by winning 14 of 15, not including the tie breaker game; the most exciting sporting event I have ever attended

@@VACATETHE48 That's a bit of a troll don't ya think? That line has been used so much that either it or something in combination with it has effectively washed-away enough of the greatness of that game and the entire streak - so much so that it doesn't suffice or come to mind as a top comeback for a very aware MLB TH-camr. And so what if he didn't? Bad calls are part of the game.
But let's say he not only didn't, but was in fact called out. Consider that it probably wouldn't have even mattered. Rox were rolling. They'd just scored 2 to tie it in the bottom of the 13th... against the Closer with the most saves in the HISTORY of baseball. They couldn't have lost that inning. And very well may still have won it, given the winning run was already on base (and the ball got away from the catcher...which should have been Helton's cue to get to 2nd and scoring position-I don't remember bc I was focused on Home). And Brad Hawpe, a power-hitting lefty (against RHP Hoffman) was on deck.
At worst, it goes to the 14th tied. And with all the magic we now all know about that run-both immediately before and after, you don't really think they're losing that game do you?
Patrick is absolutely right about it being the peak of sporting events. The TV coverage by TBS, which was new to baseball in 2007, had their atmosphere sound-settings way out-of-wack (i.e. the sound of the ball hitting the catcher's mitt or cracking the bat was set so disproportional to the atmospheric noise it's laughable). Whether for the sake of making the announcer feeds stand-alone all the more or inexperience, they effectively muted the crowd reactions to their audience at home; thereby hiding how truly special and deafeningly loud it really was, and leaving a less than ideal record. But those of us there will never forget. The entire game(+) was hard to believe (Jake Peavy, that season's Cy Young winner, started for the Padres against "Dragon Slayer" Josh Fogg for the Rockies), but in case anyone needs a short visual reminder, check out 3.53-4.05 of th-cam.com/video/EHVlMcEz2mI/w-d-xo.html.

@@VACATETHE48 You're welcome. Didn't ever mean to add any extra-some meat's just high in sodium I guess. I'm just happy it tastes good. Please pardon my nostalgia-reminiscing with baseball back (for now); and thanks for the reply btw.
I'd always laughed off that line - and still really don't care about it on any individual level. But looking back, don't you think it kinda diminishes that game/the streak? Or was it always bound to be diminished in our collective memory just bc it was Colorado (i.e. not a traditional baseball market/team), etc? I wrote up what I thought was relevant about the '07 Rocktober streak on this video's thread a few weeks ago bc of the video's '38 Cubs #5 mention. And came back today to see if it caught any traction. It didn't. Except for a reply from Patrick. So leaving a closing on his comment was fun. (Especially after seeing the '07 Phillies-7 back with 17 left-comment got more likes than the '07 Rox - that's where the salt's from.) Sorry if it felt at your expense-it certainly wasn't meant that way. I was simply using that most-remembered joke as an opening to reengage.
Regardless, be well and keep healthy in these trying times.

    x 2007 Rockies (21/22) >> #5 1938 Cubs (22/29)
Rocktober included a tiebreaker Game 163 13th-inning comeback, nearly worthy of a top-10 comeback spot on its own; certainly if the weekend events leading in is included. (It's perhaps remembered less than is warranted because of the smaller markets involved and because the following two consecutive years oddly also had dramatic 163s.)
Especially if you add in the context/build-up/culmination, i.e. what happened the final 2 weeks of the regular season just to get to that game (and/or the 2 weeks after that):
The Rox were only 4 games above .500 on Sep 16 (7th place in the Pennant chase). That was 3 games behind the 3rd-in-their-division[!] Dodgers (who were tied with Philly as the 4th-best team in the NL at the time - note that Philly would be the next year's WS Champs, and would get swept from the playoffs by the Rox in the Division Series), making the West plain bonkers. Consider how the bottom-dwelling Giants still had final-year Bonds plus Lincecum/Cain/Zito, and were a mere 3 years from being WS Champs themselves...
Before starting their streak with one win against FL, and nothing but games against 4-8LA/2SD/1AZ left...
And they even remained 4.5 games back of NYM & SD - and thus the WC (there was only 1 slot those years) - with just 10 & 9 games to play...
They ended the regular season 1/2 game shy of AZ for the best record in the West & the entire League. And they went on to avenge their only loss of the streak, which cost them their would-have-been 1st-ever Division crown (and was thought to have cost them any postseason hope at the time), by sweeping the Dbacks in the Championship Series.
Yes, like the '38 Cubs lost in the WS to the Yanks, the '07 Rox lost to the WS Sox.
However, the never-mentioned 9-day layoff - in the cold-weathered & even snowy Denver - was a factor (an amount of time I'm not certain any other playoff baseball team has had to endure) that halted the momentum of arguably the greatest streak to that point-given the stakes-in baseball history. Think about it... had their momentum continued through that World Series (say Boston/Cleveland finished the other off in less than 7, and met a still warm-enough CO sooner), a victory would have capped a month+ that'd have to unquestionably be considered the #1 baseball (if not major sports) team steak of all time.
If the 1938 Cubs are deserving of this list's #5, the 2007 Rockies oughta be #4 at worst.

Replay showed Adrian Gonzalez hand clearly crossed the plate before the tag but New York said that there was no proof that his hand actually touched the plate which is stupid. The cubs had been held scoreless for 22 innings. That call changed the momentum in the Series

What about the 1951 Giants? On August 11, 1951 they trailed the Brooklyn Dodgers by 13 games with 47 games remaining. The giants ended the season winning 39 of the final 47 games. Finishing in a tie with the Dodgers for first place. Forcing a 3 game playoff for the NL pennant. The Giants managed to win the playoff, on the most famous walk off home run in Giant history. How can somebody who claims to be a Giant fan leave that comeback off the list?

Great list, BUT you missed out on what was the definition of "greatest comeback ever" prior to the Red Sox miracle. The 1969 Mets truly were the Miracle Mets in every way imaginable. The franchise started out in utterly pathetic fashion, winning only 40 games their first season (1962) and not winning more than 53 games in any of their first 4 seasons. They climbed to second-to-last in the NL in '66 and '68, when they won a franchise-best 73 games. In '69, however, they suddenly became competitive and challenged for the NL East title. On August 14 - with 6 weeks left in the season - they stood in 3rd place, 10 games behind the Cubs. Two weeks later, they were in second and had cut the Cubs' lead to 3 games. The Cubs rallied a little and entered September with a 5 game lead in the division, but the Mets played 24-7 ball the rest of the season and the Cubs collapsed. The Mets, who had never finished higher than 9th of 10 in the league in team history, won 100 games, and won the first NL East race by 8 games, picking up 13 games on the Cubs the last month of the season. They swept the Braves in the NLCS, and after losing game 1 of the World Series to one of the best baseball teams in history, swept the next four to win the Series. Amazing!

Also the Rangers pitcher in the 11th was scared shitless vs Fresse
And even the rajai Davis' homerun in the end it was irrelevant. I agree there was no need to use Chapman in game 6 with a 5 run lead. The cubs won inspite of Maddon not because of him
