Right, you beat me to it. Baseball drafts are a tremendous crapshoot. I've been reading posts from 2012 and 2013 on a blog called Mets360 (good stuff and a must for Mets fans), and deGrom doesn't even show up on any list of their top 20 prospects
Mike Piazza was drafted by the Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 MLB amateur draft as the 1,390th player picked overall, and this was ONLY after his father had asked Tommy Lasorda to draft him as a favor(lasorda was a family friend).
The Astros' decision to take Mark Appel with the first pick over Kris Bryant, who went second to the Cubs in the 2013 Draft reminds me of the 2007 NBA Draft where the Portland Trail Blazers selected Greg Oden with the first pick over Kevin Durant, who, like Kris Bryant, went second. In both instances, the team with the first pick selected a bust instead of a superstar.
Alex TheRanger44 bad comparison greg oden could of been big... Not that he wasnt talented or cut for the nba just his size and injury cut that short real quick
Mariners fan right here, The Mariners in 2009 have the second overall pick... Dustin Ackley was drafted over Trout. There could easily be an entire video dedicated to recent draft mistakes by the Seattle Mariners.
Maybe you should do biggest trade mistakes, or worst trades that were declined. I know theres a rumor around NY that Boston offered the Mets a package with Mookie back in 2013-2014 for harvey and they said no
True, but at the time, Harvey (aka The Dark Knight) was anointed the second coming of Seaver, and Betts was still a relative nobody. There would have been riots in the streets of Flushing Queens In 2013, Betts split the season between A and high A and had nice numbers - .314/.417/.506 - very attractive for a 20 y/o, but still; Mets fans would have gone ballistic
The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Dansby Swanson #1 overall ahead of the #2 pick Alex Bregman taken by the Astros, Swanson played 1 season with the Diamondbacks and was traded to the Atlanta Braves for virtually any couple of players to be named later. Bregman helped Houston win it's 1st World Series in his rookie season and put up MVP numbers in year 2 batting. 280 with 31 HR and 100+ RBI and led the majors in doubles and finished 2nd in the Gold Glove at 3rd base!
Swansby is playing ball for a winning team. That's the reason guys are on teams, not to make the fabricator of a video highlights film look like a snarky genius.
Or in 1991, when the Yankees picked southpaw Brien Taylor (A.K.A. The Black Randy Johnson) out of the NC prep ranks, when they could’ve had a kid from their backyard in the Bronx with a picture perfect right-handed swing named Manny Ramirez.
looking at the 1982 draft. 1) Cubs take Shawon Dunston, 2) Blue Jays take Augie Schmidt (never played), 3) Padres take Jimmy Jones, 4) Twins take Bryan Oelkers. So at number 5 Dwight Gooden slips to the Mets.
13th Round 402 overall. Rookie of the year, 3 time MVP, 2 World Series Rings, 3,000 hits, 600 HR, future 1st ballot HOF Albert Pujols St. Louis Cardinals, 1999 draft. I think he might be the biggest miss of all time. 401 players picked before him!
2010 - RHP Barret Loux was drafted 6th by the Diamondbacks out of Texas A&M, chose not to sign, then turned pro the next year. Prep pitcher Karsten Whitson, another righty, was picked 9th overall by the Padres and opted to go to UF. He’d eventually get drafted in the 37th and then the 11th, playing only one year in the minors. The two of them, combined, pitched in parts of five different seasons for a total of 72 games. The guy taken 13th overall was a college lefty who only pitched in 11 games in the minors... then he got called up. His name is Chris Sale.
Being a Giant's fan, I'm shocked Tampa Bay drafted Beckham instead of Posey. He was a Florida State product, and a Georgia native. It made too much sense. That's a move many won't be able to figure out.
Still Appel. There are no bigger mistakes in MLB drafting than Appel going first and Trout not going first. Although im happy cuz he ended up on my Anaheim Angels
Historical version of draft mistakes: Reds picking Chad Motolla over Derek Jeter. Reds' scout wanted the front office to draft Jeter, but they took Motolla instead
The Montreal Expos also had a chance to draft Jeter in the 1992 draft but chose to pass on him. Maybe he one of been the one to have saved that franchise.
He's not as big of a superstar as a guy like Betts but Kevin Pillar was drafted in the 32nd round, 979th overall. The fact that he's a starter on any team is insane.
Tonio Games he’s got the same numbers as last year. If he didn’t get injured he’d have just a about ten less homers than last year. But all his other numbers are basically the same.
Baseball is probably one of the hardest sports to get draft picks right. There is a reason why there are so many picks, obviously to fill out minor league teams but also because draft picks are more a shot in the dark at times.
What if the Astros roster would of been like this 3rd base: Kris Bryant 2nd base: jose altuve 1st base: Anthony Rizzo Shortstop: Carlos Correa DH: George Springer Center Field: Mike trout Right field: Aaron judge Left field:Bryce Harper Catcher: Buster Posey
The Astros could have been insanely stacked. Lineup could have been as follows: 1. Springer CF 2. Altuve 2nd 3. Correa SS 4. Judge RF 5. Trout LF 6. Bryant 1st 7. Bregman 3rd 8. McCann C 9. Gattis DH Reserves: Riddick, Gurriel, Gonzalez, Tucker, Fisher
The Astros made a lot of mistakes in the 2013 draft First: not drafting Bryant, would've had a infield of bregman at third, correa at short, altuve at second and Bryant at first Second: astros picked first in second round and there was one name that drop to the fourth round and his name, cody bellinger. Third: obviously we had the first pick in the third round and ended up picking Kent Emanuel( yeah I know who) where in the 8th round you had trey Mancini, a guy who finished 2nd in al rookie of the year And finally in our fourth round: astros pick connor Gregor, but there was one name that slipped into the 23rd round and his name is Andrew benintendi(yes I know he didn't sign) but if you look at it the Astros had a better chance of going to the world series than the reds so he probably would've signed so in the end the Astros batting lineup would've looked like this: 1. Springer CF/OF 2. Altuve 2B 3. Correa SS 4. Bryant 1B/3B 5. Mancini DH/OF 6. Bellinger RF/OF 7. Benintendi LF/OF 8. Bregman 3B/SS 9. Mcain C while having marwin, yuli, reddick, and gattis on the bench and probably still have the same pitching rotation so just imagine the Astros being a more of powerhouse and the GSW of baseball so in the end it's a big what if
the man I know its nitpicking I just if I can go back and tell are gm to pick these guys I would but trust me I know all teams either get a bust or a diamond like the A's got Sean meanea in this draft and to the late rounds
Dawson Wright, in a few years you might add Cody Bellinger to the list of biggest draft mistakes in the last decade. Cody was taken in the 4th round of the 2013 MLB draft.
It also worth noting that Mike Trout on the Angels remains further away from a shot at a World Series ring than just about any other member of this list. Even Appel who was high up in the Astros farm system.
Great report. As a Giants fan, I was shocked when Posey fell to the Giants at the 5 spot. Mad Bumgarner was another big pick up for the Giants as the 8th pick. He was drafted out of high school and came up in 2 years, and as a 20 year old had one of the best pitching performances in WS history. And helped the Giants get 3 rings in 5 years. 💍💍💍
Hey Dawson, I liked your video, but not sure if I agree with your title. The Angels even missed on Trout. The Angels picked someone else first before they even picked Trout (Randal Grichuk was picked 24th) . Also, Trout's father played a role in his signing with the Angels because of his connections with the scout. Posey, I felt dropped because he didn't have great speed and he didn't show great power. Beckham had some decent speed. Judge was a slow starter! But, he really redesigned his playing style! Mookie, great information, a lot of teams missed. Good video.
I think he was fairly drafted. Remember that when he was drafted he was supposed to be a very good glove, good average good obp minimal power hitter. Even while in the minors he didn't ever show much beyond average pop. Then suddenly out of nowhere he gets to the majors and his SLG skyrockets. Not even the Indians saw that coming.
I think it would be fairer or at least more honest to mention why some of these guys were drafted where they were. Trout put up monster numbers in high school, so much so that teams were very concerned about the level of competition he was actually facing. While most major prospects are playing national events, Trout spent very little time involved with them so there was little to no chance to scout him when he was playing with kids who were also draft prospects.
Trout is a beast. Great view on the game to. Remember hearing an interview they had with him about the money he makes. Was like cool I wanna play ball that's nice
Why didn’t these first overall pitchers sign with Houston? Brady Aiken also was selected first overall and did not sign. Was it because they sucked so much?
Aiken had a poor physical and the Astros offered him a really low signing bonus because they found out he would miss time with surgery. Aiken declined, went to a 5th year prep HS, and was drafted in the 1st round the next year.
So grateful that the Astros picked Mark Appel... Kris Bryant is the future of our franchise, and it’s a very bright one, especially with all the young stars around him...
The thing with these guys is it’s all about a “what if” situation because most of these guys talent also comes from how people react to there talent and also their teammates
Anthony Rizzo. Because he wasn't drafted until the 7th round by the Red Sox. He then got moved to the Padres who the traded him to the Cubs and with the Cubs he's had 4 consecutive 30+ home run seasons, 3 consecutive 100+ RBI seasons and he's a 3 time All-star and a gold glove winner and been in the top 10 for NL MVP voting 3 times.
Aaron Judge was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 31st round in the 2010 draft out of high school, but he opted out to play college ball. It’s a shame what could’ve been.
The Blue Jays originally drafted Kris Bryant in 18th round of the 2010 draft out of high school but he did not sign and chose to go to college, and the Blue Jays were running low on draft pool money by the time they drafted him.
Everybody in the angels organization said they would’ve picked trout 24 if they didn’t have compensation but they drafted him 25 for signing bonus reasons so the Yankees had nothing to do with it
Baseball has to be the hardest sport to scout. With prospects taking multiple years to really show what they can do, most GM and other execs are sometimes not with the teams that drafted said players.
Kris Bryant on the Astros would be INSANE.
MLB hi MLB
Yo what!? Hi MLB
You see this Dawson
Yeah I see it
Who would play first?
JACOB DEGROM. 9TH ROUND.
Right, you beat me to it.
Baseball drafts are a tremendous crapshoot. I've been reading posts from 2012 and 2013 on a blog called Mets360 (good stuff and a must for Mets fans), and deGrom doesn't even show up on any list of their top 20 prospects
@@Jose_Hunters_EWF_Remixes wasnt he a SS when he was drafted
DeGrom was a late bloomer though.
@@Ryan-xw2gm he switched to pitcher in college so no
He was a iffy shortstop when he was drafted, he wasn’t even a pitcher, so that’s why
I know this was like 20 years ago but Albert Pujols was taken 13th round
Most draft experts are not as good as they seem
Mike Piazza was in the 63rd round
Mike Piazza was drafted by the Dodgers in the 62nd round of the 1988 MLB amateur draft as the 1,390th player picked overall, and this was ONLY after his father had asked Tommy Lasorda to draft him as a favor(lasorda was a family friend).
Thats what I was thinkin... I'm where the hell is Albert??
Just shows it doesn't matter when your drafted in the MLB
The Astros' decision to take Mark Appel with the first pick over Kris Bryant, who went second to the Cubs in the 2013 Draft reminds me of the 2007 NBA Draft where the Portland Trail Blazers selected Greg Oden with the first pick over Kevin Durant, who, like Kris Bryant, went second. In both instances, the team with the first pick selected a bust instead of a superstar.
Alex TheRanger44 yeah, but the difference is the Astros didn’t turn out as bad as the Blazers.
To be fair, if Greg Oden would've stayed healthy he could have been good, not as good as KD, but still solid.
I believe it would be more comparable to the Blazers selecting Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan.
But the Mark Appel blunder lead to the draft of Alex Bregman. If he were in the NL he would be front runner for MVP his season.
Alex TheRanger44 bad comparison greg oden could of been big... Not that he wasnt talented or cut for the nba just his size and injury cut that short real quick

You need to do a historic version of this. For example, in the 1966 draft the Mets took Steve Chilcott over Reggie Jackson for God's sake.
ZMR33 Plus we passed on Roger Clemens too...
or when Mariano Riveria was drafted like 185th. Or when the Astros passed on Jeter

The Braves could've drafted Mike Trout but they drafted Mike Minor instead *facepalm*
Mike was an okay prospect, of course he's not Trout but he wasn't a huge disappointment
So could have most of the other teams.
Thomas Breazeale it’s in his name that he’d be the less successful of the two picks......
Mets could've had him too but they signed K-Rod which gave the Angels the pick before they took Trout which they used on Randal Grichuk
Don’t talk about it I’m a braves fan
As a die hard Yankees fan thank you all for Judge. We really appreciate it.

You can’t diss teams passing on players that have college commitments. 9/10 times those guys walk anyway
Everybody in the angels organization said they would’ve picked trout 24 if they didn’t have compensation but they drafted him 25 for signing bonus reasons so the Yankees had nothing to do with it
Love your vids keep it up bro
Mlb draft is the biggest gamble of any of the big drafts to me. Has gotten better over the last few years though.
Baseball has to be the hardest sport to scout. With prospects taking multiple years to really show what they can do, most GM and other execs are sometimes not with the teams that drafted said players.
Arenado is good to average away from Coors. He wouldn’t be talked about had he not gone to Colorado. That park makes him look really good.
Mookie Betts is like an IRL MLB The Show Road to the Show character, all the way down to his name.
Baseball... The only sport where the audience is willing to fight each other over a ball.
Subbing to you hasn’t let me down, great videos man!
Trout, Soto & Harper? CHRIST that'd be bananas
3:03 Kershaw always pissed off😂😂
While I agree about the Posey draft, I think the O's did ok with Matt Wieters. He played an important role in their playoff runs from 2012 to 2016.
Baseball seems like the hardest sport to predict how top amateur talents will do as professionals.
Imagine how many good players that would’ve been mvps who didn’t get drafted
the oblivion music love it!!!
