AKA "turn out". Peter, I'm not sure about the UK or Europe but in the States it depends on what State you are in, there is no federal regulation on it.
My wife has done the same thing with her Honda CRV and takes her three small dog with her, loads of room and she loves it! She has a tarp off the truck and cooks out side!! Good luck on your trip!!
Of course, over here in the USA, we have the Jeep (in all of the various models). But I have always loved the Land Rover Defender! Would love to have Defender 90! They are such capable vehicles. Enjoyed the video!! Well done!
When I'm traveling for work I like camping in my Mini-van. The back seats come out. I tie out a tarp over the roof so I can open windows (not needed if dry or too cold. Grab a twin fold out bed mattress, good bag, an electric camping site. Mini fridge, microwave, electric blanket...I'm good 4 seasons.
I've always admired the look and versatility of the older land rovers, but here in the states they are EXPENSIVE! So a couple years ago I bought a 1974 Jeep CJ5 ($4500 cash) which is - I think - the smallest wheelbase Jeep ever made, and there is no way in hell I'd be able to sleep in it, which is why I always carry some basic camping supplies with me. Cheers from across the pond! Love the vids!
Hey Mike, I hope all is good. A layby as you were saying, we call it a rest area here in the States. I knew exactly what you were talking about as soon as you stuck the camera out the window. Beautiful country there.
Brings to mind a song from a great British rock band The Who ‘ Going Mobile’. Lyrics such as ‘ I can lay in bed with only highway ahead..’. Very good video, thoroughly enjoyed it. You’ve got quite the comfortable set up there. Thank you for posting!
In my area of the US that would be called a Wayside. In my part if the country, a Rest Area is a large facility with lots of parking for lots of cars along an interstate highway, and a building with restroom facilities, maps and vending machines. A Wayside is simply a spot on the side of the road where you can pull over and maybe have a picnic.
To be honest this 90 had 800 miles on the clock when I saw it I couldn’t turn it down. 110 makes more sense and most overlanders are in them, but for me I wasn’t planning on using it for camping originally. Just something a bit different! Yes it’s a lovely drive down
So envious! Was up there over a Christmas and New Year three years ago and loved it! We stayed in a cottage at Kytra Lock just outside Fort Augustus...sadly without my canoes!! Looking forward to seeing all the team's films from this trip. Hope it all went brilliantly.
Te ha quedao muy bien el video. Felicidades. Suerte.
Lay-by? Here in the States we simply call that a "Rest stop"... sometimes ours have bathrooms, anchored grills and picnic tables, but yeah... same thing
Cheers! Thank you for showing me my much-missed Scotland. Pre-pandemic, I would visit at least once per year, mostly for the golf. Over time (I've been doing this for 25 years or so), I have grown to love the country side, especially in the north. I have yet to see Ft. William and northwest, but it is on the agenda. Thanks again and I am looking forward to see the lochs again.
Rest Stop here. Some very busy, most dont allow overnight camping but in New Mexico you can stay 24 hrs. In one. I stayed overnight in my campershell on my 73 gmc truck just west of Lordsburg New Mexico.
Hope the Great Glen adventure is going well! There is a big bike race on tomorrow, the Etape, round the shores of Loch Ness. A lot of road closures... Hope to see you if you stop off at the north end of the Loch at Dores. Beautiful views, and where I live
I sleep in my 110, so that's pure luxury 😉And you know what... if it works, it works and that's the most important thing 😎 The canoe trip was very fun to watch man!!
Gonna go to scotland so exited for it, but a bit higher above Inverness for a week for a salmon trip, but I remember my road trip through scotland where we actually met some volunteer firemen/women that were doing pretty much the same thing, also for charity fundraising. We met in the pub in fort augustus and ended up going the last 20miles or so of their trip up to and over loch ness. It was an amazing experience and a lot of fun, though the slight hangover was not that great in the morning haha.
This is something you can do in some countries. In Denmark you can't legally sleep in a lay by.. With certain exceptions. Truck drivers can, but not overnight. They are basically for a short rest. And don't even think about taking a nap in your RV at a lay by
Great vid. Ive been using my Bronco Sport, which I’m assuming is smaller than your Defender, for off-road, overland camping and fishing adventures. Being 6’1 I’m a bit tall for the space so coming up with solutions was interesting. I purchased a tent that attaches over the hatch and that’s made camping easier and set up/ takedown is about 10 minutes. Finding places to store gear/ recover gear has been fun as I don’t want to overly modify the interior. Always interested in seeing how others approach these things. Cheers
So strange I keep finding your comments across TH-cam, I'll need to look at your subscribed list for more channel recommendations , obviously watching the same kinda stuff :)
@@theomccall9503 How funny! I try to post a good comment if I like the video, at least it helps the channel's algorithm a little. No idea if the channel maker will read them, but I know how much effort making videos can be, and a 'thanks' is always nice to read.
Lol I saw your name in the comments & was like “hang on a minute…” but then again bushcraft & historical study have a lot of things in common! Awesome to see
In Australia we call it a “truck stop” (on major trade routes) or a “rest stop” (anywhere else). Camp in the 4wd isn’t too bad, I’ve camped in the back of my Prado a couple of times.
Great work Mike and the first of many videos from this canoe trip that I have seen. I guess you had the time for some good tips from Simon (YT channel: Simon, a bloke in the woods) regarding the Landy. I was following the progress on Richards (YT channel: Richard Outdoors) live link as well. You have all done a great job in both raising awareness for the charity as well as money. I hope you got the rod fixed, and even better, caught a decent fish with it.
Just had an overnighter with my good lady wife in a layby (fire break entrance) 8 mile outside Newton Stewart Scotland. Camping in the back of a Volvo XC70. You think the Defender is small Mike? Thank fully neither my wife or I are, shall we say chunky LOL great fun really. Worked well once I worked out how to silence the car alarm. Dooh.
The general design may be good, but not the execution. Land Rovers and Jaguars break down more often than any other cars sold in the UK. They are a traditional British (though now Indian owned) motor manufacturer with no Japanese middle managers.
Lay by= rest area. We can't wait to see the pics of the canoe trip!
I was about to say that but read you comment 😂👍👌✌️🇺🇸
Just be careful doing over night stays because I think that is against the rules... I could be wrong. :)
AKA "turn out". Peter, I'm not sure about the UK or Europe but in the States it depends on what State you are in, there is no federal regulation on it.
@@petertallowin6406 Scotland pretty much allows overnight stays anywhere, unless signed otherwise.
@@ApexHerbivore I recant forthwith. I did not know that. 🤔😂
I’m just a hop, skip, and a jump over the pond here in Indiana, USA. Love the videos, thanks for the entertainment
Defender 90, beautiful scenery.... living the dream.
Love the 90
As a caregiver for my mom who's suffering from dementia/Alzheimer's awesome cause you're doing this for Mike! 2 massive thumbs up :))))
Thanks for overview! I've learned so much from your videos! Your channel one of the best! With respect from Russia.

They're not cheap over here in the UK either, the Discovery range are much cheaper second hand but they are not nearly as good as the Defender.
