Shopping List for Hanging a Flat-Screen TV:
- TV wall-mounting bracket
- Old-work electrical box, for housing the recessed electrical outlet
- Recessed electrical outlet, used to provide power to the TV
- Two low-voltage rings with cover plates, for housing the audio-visual cables
- Nonmetallic electrical cable, provides power to the recessed electrical outlet
- Audio-visual cables, connects the TV to the cable box and DVD player
- Electrical tape, used to secure the cables to the fish tape
- Cable staples, for fastening the cables to the floor joists in the basement
- Infrared (IR) repeater and admitter, allows the TV remote control to operate the cable box and DVD player
- Lag screws, for securing the TV wall-mounting bracket to the wall studs
Tools List for Hanging a Flat-Screen TV:
- Utility knife or drywall saw, for cutting holes in walls
- Wire strippers, used to cut and strip wires
- Needle-nose pliers, used to break the tab off the electrical box
- Fish tape, for fishing wires through walls
- Screwdriver
- Hammer
- Drill/driver
Steps for Hanging a Flat-Screen TV:
1. Hold an old-work electrical box against the wall directly above an existing electrical outlet.
2. Trace the outline of the box onto the wall, then use a utility knife (or a drywall saw) to cut a hole through the drywall.
3. Repeat the previous steps to cut a hole for a low-voltage ring that will house the audio-visual cables.
4. Turn off the electrical power to the wall outlet.
5. Remove the cover plate from the outlet and unscrew and pull the outlet from the outlet box. Don't disconnect any wires.
6. Use needle-nose pliers to twist off the tab from the upper corner of the outlet box.
7. Push a length of nonmetallic electrical cable into the outlet box and up the wall to the hole cut earlier in Step 2.
8. Connect one end of the cable to the recessed electrical outlet, and connect the opposite end to the existing electrical outlet.
9. Install a low-voltage ring to the hole cut in Step 3.
10. Use a fish tape to pull audio-visual cables up from the basement and through the low-voltage ring.
11. Pull the ends of the audio-visual cables through a cover plate, then screw the plate to the low-voltage ring.
12. Extend the audio-visual cables from the TV location to the location of the cable box and DVD player.
13. Cut a hole in the wall near the cable-box location and install a second low-voltage ring.
14. Pull the audio-visual cables up from the basement and through the low-voltage ring.
15. Attach an infrared (IR) repeater to the TV.
16. Mount an infrared (IR) admitter to the IR window on the cable box and on the DVD player.
17. Make the audio-visual cable connections to the cable box and DVD player.
18. Screw the TV wall-mounting bracket to the wall studs and to the back of the TV using lag screws.
19. Hang the TV onto the the wall-mounting bracket.
20. Connect the wires to surround-sound speakers, then mount the speakers to the wall.
21. Turn the power back on.

Yes, this is a fairly fast and simple example on "wiring a home theatre system" in most homes. Mounting the wall plate/bracket can be more involved- take lots more time and call for the use of different hardware depending on the way type, wall mount and TV size and weight. Further, it's a generally good idea to try to keep the low voltage signal wires (HDMI) away from the higher voltage AC power whenever possible to avoid the potential for electrical interference. A good "rule of thumb" is to simply not to run them together inside the wall.

Richard van Pukkem im starting to understand why americans home get so damaged by hurricanes and floods.. Its nothing more then stabilized paper with small wooden sticks holding up the floors. In a real house you can mount a CRT TV to the wall. In this house I even be careful to put my hand on the wall. :/

This is great for making an entertainment space look super clean. I totally recommend it. I recently helped my dad install an entire basement entertainment space with a projector and 7.2 surround sound. Not a single wire can be shown. We created a little base station in a different room that hides all the cables, receiver and multimedia PC. Quite the setup!

I have an issue with running the low voltage wires so close to the romex. Shielded or not, the low voltage wires should be at least 8 inches away from the romex especially since they are parallel to each other.

I’ve done this myself 5x in my house.
It’s not that hard, but a helper makes it much easier for TVs larger than 50”.
Tip: Use high quality HDMI cables, and run a spare through the wall as HDMI cables go bad in about 3-5 years.
Use the spare when the original goes bad, and then when you have time, use the bad one to pull another spare through.
I just did this but never thought of hiding the stuff right by the couch or something ... that is a smart idea.

I started replacing some of our receptacles with ones that support USB. In my case, they still have two outlets, but you add the two USB outlets on top of that.
They are really handy. I don't put them everywhere, but outlets in bathrooms, in the kitchen (esp. on the counter), and in our offices? Amazing.
Just be aware they usually don't support the same fast charging standards (higher voltage/amperages smartly negotiated over the cable) as modern phones, so a lot of phones will charge much slower.
That said a slow charge isn't bad - actually better for your battery - so they're perfect for trickle charging overnight or at your desk. A lot of small gadgets charge off USB these days too and it works well for those.

I love the new USB single outlet. They use them now in RV's to power and charge other devices. Without the need to run separate low voltage cables.

I would like to have seen the process behind mounting the speakers and where the wires went. Also where the lines for the repeaters and where the IR repeater receiver was placed. Directly on the TV? Lastly, the receptacle that can charge a phone... Can it also charge an iPad? The adapters for iPhone and iPad are different.

Hey installer Scott, you need to leave that razor knife in the bag and use a Sheetrock saw. Much cleaner cuts and it is faster.

good install especially the cable management but i think i would have mounted it another 6 to 12 inches higher.
The height just depends on your seating position because you don't want to have to crane your neck to view the TV.

Yup, mount a little higher and angle down slightly, that will reduce glare. The top of my TV is mounted almost at the top of my head and I'm 6'2"

Majjespecter that's the proper level. Most ppl think above fireplace is best, but it's not.
As a installer myself, a wall mounted flat TV should have the bottom of the screen level with the viewers eyes. like when you're seated on a couch, but this TV does look to low to me as well.
Mounting a TV above a fireplace and mantle seems logical and "right" but for homes that use the TV often it's a mistake. The higher viewing angle will soon cause "neck fatigue". Many homeowners pick over the fireplace locations to avoid redesigning the living room seating and furniture- it's a poor compromise if the TV is used on a regular basis. But, tastes vary and logic can take a secondary priority.

@@InCountry6970 Never heard anyone say that before, the usual recommendation that I've heard is that the middle of the TV should be at eye level but personally I think that depends on how big your TV is. For computer screens you want the top of your screen to be at eye level, so for it to be the bottom of TV's seems quite weird.

+iShootBandits This is a job that anyone can do. The only reason you would need an electrician is if the owner doesn't feel comfortable installing the outlet.
This is to show people how to do it themselves. What's the point in watching if you're just going to hire someone?
I like to vacuum at night with all the curtains drawn and the lights off so boy was I glad to see that outlets can have nightlights
Lucky me. My cable company box has a remote that works over radio frequency.
For anyone out there who doesn't know how to do this job, Any wall you'll need to run wires into will be automatically pre-drilled at the bottom between the studs, just wave your hand holding the wire in that area and you'll notice it is predrilled with an ample amount of room for a large bundle of wires. (I worked installing alarms for ADT, I prided myself at getting a wire into a room/place that others could not), so I do not understand how this video would help anyone who hasn't run wire, a monkey could stuff a wire through a pre-existing hole, Its learning how to drill into the correct spots that is ignored here, See Blanca W's comment for instance.
Way too much work. I don't even know how to get to the unknown other side/mystery basement of the wall in an eight-unit condo. :(((

I feel like this is an overly complicated way to hang a tv. Just buy a tv stand that features both a mount and little channels to discretely run wires from the cable box and DVD player stored below the tv. You’ll save yourself the hassle of running wires and cutting holes in walls. You can even buy special holders to mount the sound bar below the tv, once again avoiding the need to drill holes in the wall. If you run wires thru the walls and floor, good luck troubleshooting and replacing wires if you begin experiencing issues with any of the components.
Check your codes... a lot of location don't allow low voltage wires in the wall with out protection

& IR repeaters are a big PITA. we have been installing wi-fi based remotes for years now. we use mostly logitech harmony smart control systems. no more having to point the remote at anything.
You still gotta get the ir to the device being controlled.
that's done with an IR blaster that is placed in the equipment cabinet. & it blast in every direction so placement is easy unlike with those silly stick-on emitters.
Aren't you not supposed to run low voltage (data) cables in the same stud bay since you will get interference?

I think I'd run some piping or something from one end of the cable management hole to the other. That way I don't have to eff with the basement to run cables. Just fishtape through the pipe and call it a day.

Well the home owner was a shorter guy so maybe that works for him. Mine is like 5 feet up.
The ideal position of TVs is above eye level. Think of like going to the movie theater, the best seats are where your eyes are about mid screen height.

The wall is covered in plaster. It's probably has wood lath behind it. You didn't notice the detail? Scoring the plaster with a knife prevents chipping of the plaster when the actual cut is made. In fact, you can see where he didn't score the plaster deeply enough and ended up chipping the plaster anyway.

I've got plaster walls in my house and I have seen 120volt plug in drills bind up when I had my TV hung. I do wish I had drywall sometimes, this is so I could do this type of work without calling a contractor.

-wud have been nice if u wud have shown how it shud look behind the TV once it was hung up at 4:24 bc u only spent a second on that.
-the beginning was too long (about cable) & the end didn't relate (different types of outlets), time cud have been used on the installation of the TV on the wall.
