40fps is great, but should be supported on all console platforms. I no longer believe that one day all games will be able to reach stable 60fps, I just hope they raise the lower bar up 10fps, is that too much still?
Stable 60 frames is solely on the devs making new games. They can easily make their game run at 60 frames on current gen consoles and mid range PCs. I have no idea why games like Alan Wake 2 is so demanding on the hardware side. Its not like its revolutionary in graphics and fidelity. Horizon Forbidden West was somewhat revolutionary in fidelity. It runs easy stable 60 frames on PS5 Pro, AND is an open world game. Alan Wake 2 is not an open world game, looks worse than Horizon, does not look revolutionary better than a game like RE:Village, yet Village runs easily 60 frames, up to 120 frames. People should demand more of the people making the games, instead of thinking its okay to move gaming in a direction where people need to buy incredibly expensive hardware like a 4090 and spend more and more on hardware to run games in 60 frames. Imagine buying a rtx 3090 for over 1k just 3 years ago, and you boot up Alan Wake 2, play it on ultra in 1440p, and you get 20 frames a second. Thats the reality you live in, and thats what consoles have to compete with. The onus is on the devs making the games.
40 really is a sweet spot for visual to performance on limited hardware. I didn't think much of it until I found myself tuning EVERY game to 40 fps on my steam deck with the few exceptions being games that are so light that going for max FPS would be dumb not to. Because it halves the time for frames to generate from 30, it feels like a good standard for "smooth". It's not butttery smooth but smooth enough to not be bothersome.
The fact that the devs improved this with a Patch tells me how far PSSR can go and how easy just patches can bump up quality and performance of games on the pro.
Why can’t they have a 40fps mode for the base PS5? 60 drops frames and 30 makes the controls feel sluggish. Surely it should be possible without ray tracing.
Can anyone tell me how the game looks in balanced mode compared to performance mode in terms of actual gameplay. Like between the 2 modes, which is the preferred mode and why?
Sorry guys, but saying that FSR is better than PSSR at producing a "4K-like image" in Alan Wake 2 is just wild. It really comes across as you trying to stick no matter what to your original judgement that PSSR is no good in this game, which was already highly questionnable before this patch (because for some reason you decided to focus exclusively on the few things it did slightly worse than FSR, while completely glossing over the many things it did WAY better). Now that the PSSR implementation has been improved even further, there's just zero debate that PSSR is much, much preferable to FSR here. I can think of two reasons why you'd do this : either you're incapable of telling that your preference for FSR is purely due to personal sensibilities that are in no way applicable to the general audience, or it's just hubris preventing you from admitting your original analysis was wrong in the first place. Either way, you need to be better than this, this is absolutely not worthy of your reputation.
Vrr doesn't go lower than 45 hz right? When the frame rate drops under 45 fps then the hz is double vs the frame rate. Thus you will still need a 120hz tv to double 40 fps to 80hz. 40 divides into 120 evenly so VRR is not needed.
@smidlee7747 sorry wasn't clear enough was typing on my phone at work I meant an unlocked vrr balanced mode I think they can still patch the pro with extra performance so we can largely get high 40s to 60s
You’d think these studios should be able to hit a 1080p base and let the pssr bump it to 4k. Do you think that would fix these issues people are having with pssr?
@joshuam4993 wrong it is a hybrid of RDNA 2, RDNA 3 architecture, and upcoming RDNA 4 features currently not available on PC. Get your facts right. Mark has even made mention in the DF interview.
@joshuam4993 lol you can go read any article on the matter. It's long been known this system has ray tracing features not available on AMD GPUs. Hell even Tom's hardware has an article on it. But hey if you don't want it. Don't buy it. I'm enjoying the shit outta my Pro.

i need video digital foundry test pro vs series x cause now this is what we need to see cause series x is already powerful then ps5 30 pourcent that mean if the devs optimise their games well, so we need to see this kind of of video from digital foundry on my opinion
I think the way to go is the 40 fps Balanced mode (but you need a TV that does 120 Hz refresh rate). It sounds like it's perfectly smooth with no fps drops, while keeping a higher resolution (and even RT) but it will feel MUCH smoother than 30 fps, trust me That's how I played Alan Wake 2 yesterday on my gaming PC - at high/ultra settings with Ray traced direct lighting and reflections (but without path tracing) and I played it at a perfectly smooth 40 fps (I locked it to that fps manually). It felt awesome! At 40 fps it also looks more cinematic, especially for a slower paced game like this. It's more relaxing for the eyes too, but still responsive for combat etc. 👍 Ppl on consoles like PS5 (even the Pro) need to realize that there is a limit of how much performance you can get on a $700 or less machine vs. visual quality. So 40 fps Balanced modes are a perfect compromise I think.
@@ConeTheBoss559 Because 40 fps divides evenly into 120 Hz (3 x 40 fps = 120 Hz refresh rate) so devs only enable 40 fps mode on consoles when you have a 120 Hz display, so that it still looks smooth. If you try to have a locked 40 fps on a 60 Hz display, 40 fps doesn't divide evenly into 60 Hz refresh of the display, so it won't ever look smooth. Cheers!
If anyone is wondering why there are no night shots, which is 80% of the game and 100% of the alan wake parts, its because PSSR utterly and completely OBLITERATES FSR.
@@gamzilliocouldn’t put it better myself. Just wait until FSR 4.0 due to release soon on the 8 series gpus. PSSR will then be playing catch up and realistically only has marginal advantages over current FSR.

According to sony most players play the 60 fps modes. I think marc cerny said 85%, but im not sure. I do not know who plays 40fps modes and see that as an improvement. No matter how they look, they all play incredible sluggish.
How many out of 85% knows the performance mode is 60 fps? It could be 85% think performance mode looks good enough as there are many who is still playing ps4. My son recently bought a ps5 only because his PS4 stopped working. Nintendo Switch still selling in spite a lot of games running sub-par 30 fps.
@@smidlee7747 If you were to by a brand new PS5 and make no adjustments to settings the system goes with the default mode for all games...meaning unless there is no quality mode....the default option is always quality mode/30fps mode. The actual number Cerney quoted was 75% of all PS5 gamers choose Performance mode, which means people are actively changing the mode to Performance for 60fps. PS4 players are not counted in that metric as most games are not 60fps on PS4, and the PS4pro doesn't offer the option to play at 60fps. The 40fps Balanced mode is only a benefit for someone who has a 120hz display as it has the fluidity of motion as a higher framerate and the visuals of the game in quality mode. It is a good middle ground compromise especially in a game like this where there is very little twitch response needed even in the action segments. I will play this game in 40fps on my C4 OLED even though I always choose performance mode for games on PS5 and PS5 pro.
@iBaZiic Are you just not familiar with how demanding this game is in general or is your ignorance console specific. Let's start there....demanding game that only the top 10% of PC owners are playing better than a PS5 pro. The remaining 90% of all gamers are making compromises somewhere to get the game running in a way that makes sense to them. Some are not gonna use RT, some are gonna sacrifice frames for RT, some are gonna use DLSS, some are gonna turn down or off certain settings to increase performance....but only 10% of all players are gonna turn on everything and no one is currently running this game native rendering with full pathtracing and 60 or 60+fps.

They need to focus on these 40fps modes for all games and unlocked frame rate option for all of us on VRR displays.
Absolutely going backwards ...
No care for 40fps but why there are not uncapped mode options is mind blowing in 2024.
@@mikem2253 the 40fps mode is good when you have an unlocked frame rate so the lowest frames don’t go below 40.

I love the balanced mode on AW2. I think 40FPS is perfect for this game and the RT is pretty well implemented (for a console game).

Why not comparison here of lake reflections curious how much less noisy does it look now:)
Why can’t they have a 40fps mode for the base PS5? 60 drops frames and 30 makes the controls feel sluggish. Surely it should be possible without ray tracing.
40FPS should be available on the base model. The PS5 & PS5 Pro have the same CPU after all.
Lol you are clueless
PSSR looks so much better to me than with it Off
Can anyone tell me how the game looks in balanced mode compared to performance mode in terms of actual gameplay. Like between the 2 modes, which is the preferred mode and why?
Amazing video, thank you Digital Foundry.
I played it withe the 1st update had no issues with pssr and the raytracing looked gas
Wish we had a vrr balanced mode
Vrr doesn't go lower than 45 hz right? When the frame rate drops under 45 fps then the hz is double vs the frame rate. Thus you will still need a 120hz tv to double 40 fps to 80hz. 40 divides into 120 evenly so VRR is not needed.
@smidlee7747 sorry wasn't clear enough was typing on my phone at work I meant an unlocked vrr balanced mode I think they can still patch the pro with extra performance so we can largely get high 40s to 60s
So PSSR is better because we actually PLAY video games and don't just take still screenshots, is what I'm hearing.
Would love a 2k25 pro review
You’d think these studios should be able to hit a 1080p base and let the pssr bump it to 4k. Do you think that would fix these issues people are having with pssr?
The PS5 pro is a very marginal upgrade for a steep price. Also, its AMD which has notoriously bad RT performance and its not even full RDNA3.

Ppl on consoles like PS5 (even the Pro) need to realize that there is a limit of how much performance you can get on a $700 or less machine vs. visual quality. So 40 fps Balanced modes are a perfect compromise I think.

Why would you need 120Hz refresh rate for 40fps?
@@ConeTheBoss559 cos 120 Hz displays unlock 40 FPS 60 hz do not
Absolutely trash opinion
@@ConeTheBoss559 Because 40 fps divides evenly into 120 Hz (3 x 40 fps = 120 Hz refresh rate) so devs only enable 40 fps mode on consoles when you have a 120 Hz display, so that it still looks smooth. If you try to have a locked 40 fps on a 60 Hz display, 40 fps doesn't divide evenly into 60 Hz refresh of the display, so it won't ever look smooth. Cheers!

Okay, so when are they adding a 40fps mode to the Xbox Series X and base PS5?🤔
According to sony most players play the 60 fps modes. I think marc cerny said 85%, but im not sure. I do not know who plays 40fps modes and see that as an improvement. No matter how they look, they all play incredible sluggish.
How many out of 85% knows the performance mode is 60 fps? It could be 85% think performance mode looks good enough as there are many who is still playing ps4. My son recently bought a ps5 only because his PS4 stopped working. Nintendo Switch still selling in spite a lot of games running sub-par 30 fps.
40 hz is for people with 120 hz tvs specifically.
@@smidlee7747
If you were to by a brand new PS5 and make no adjustments to settings the system goes with the default mode for all games...meaning unless there is no quality mode....the default option is always quality mode/30fps mode.
@iBaZiic
Are you just not familiar with how demanding this game is in general or is your ignorance console specific. Let's be very clear here....Alan Wake 2 is a very demanding game which most PC's are not running this game at or above the settings of the PS5 pro. Like let's get into perspective the fact that the overwhelming majority of people don't game on a 4090 and the overwhelming majority of console gamers aren't expecting a 4090 out of a 700.00 box.
