- In this excerpt from Overheard with Evan Smith, former Sonic Youth band member Kim Gordon talks about why she doesn't think Sonic Youth will ever be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and why the band won't be getting back together.

Sonic Youth not to everyone's taste but to my ears, damn fine and a wonderful body of work
I had a friend in college radio that got me into Sonic Youth. We both went on a road trip to Cleveland Ohio to a festival and Sonic Youth was playing (rather ripped era) thurson grabbed my phone when I was trying to take a picture of him and made noise along his guitar with my phone. He put his guitar on the security guy too which was hilarious (I definitely hit the strings on his guitar when he did that). Kim said a silent thank you to me at the end I think for being the only black kid in a Velvet Underground shirt rocking out.. Forever a fan since.

Sonic Youth was too brutally honest to make it to the rock n roll hall of fame
Did Pixes make it in The Rock 'N' Roll Hall Of Fame ?
To her own credit I feel like she was trying to say they didn’t make a big enough impact on the mainstream to make it into the Rock Hall. Not like Nirvana did. However I have been to the museum and one of her basses was on display which is super kool!

So sad it ended (the marriage and band) I really thought they would go on forever.
I love Sonic Youth with all my heart, but I have to say they've done a lot and it's good that they not reform or whatever. Kim's got her various projects and Thurston his. Lee is killing it with his band so....why keep going?
It bums me out about their marriage but seeing them on that last tour seemed like a closing. They have a wonderful body of work that I think will be rediscovered in 10-15 years and that's great. All the best to all members, and I want to thank them for the soundtrack to my life. I'm forever in debt for the enjoyment they've given me as well as countless others.
Onward, forever forward.
yeah, if i were Kim i would never ever reunite with Thurston and i'm sure she never will. They played for exactly 30 years, that's pretty long :)

They really have nothing left to do. Their body of work is so vast and amazing as well. There’s so much for fans to listen to. They should just leave it at that. Nothing lasts forever anyways.
I love her. Kim is the Queen of her Castle. I think shes gorgeous too, and that voice. The sexiest.
I'm just selfish in that I never got to see Sonic Youth live, but it's totally understandable after what went down personally. Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, and Lee Ranaldo are still making really cool music, so I'm still happy.

I saw them four times. Twice on their last tour.

There's this new manner that is prevalent in "interviews" nowadays, where the interviewer basically pre-answers his own questions.

The fact that they're not in it tells you the "Hall of fame" has never been about music
Kim: Im from Chile, the last place on the planet, i live in Antofagasta a city near Atacama desert, and your music was like a gift from life, the 90s grunge era, and all its bands, the mainstream down here were playing mostly pop artists, but we got the grunge movement through MTV, wich in those wonderful years was almost like a radio station because the would only play music videos 24/7, and Sonic Youth was THE rock band in that era. The video you did with Mark Romanek for Little trouble girl helped to shape my whole vision of how art + music can create a Masterpiece, i still remember listening Bull in the heather for the first on MTV, the cover you did for the Carpernters song, so many things that now are the most happy memories of my life, how can you not be in the Music Hall of Fame, all i can say is; you and Sonic Youth belong to something higher than that, you belong to collective consciousness, there are kids in here that know your music and see Sonic Youth as one the coolest and respectable bands of all time along side Bowie or The Beatles. The greatest triumph of Sonic Youth is the fact that in a place like this, in the end of the world, there are people that love your music, still in 022.

rather ripped is the album that if released 10 years earlier, would of been the 'pop' record that might of gotten them into the convo with rocknroll hall of fame, i guess.

Watched the full interview, it would have been great to hear Kim speak without interruption. The host could probably have a better show if he learned to shut up for a few seconds.

Hall of fame is all about sales, nothing about being a museum and educating people on rock and roll history. Hall of FAME. Lame Kraftwerk is snubbed too.

@@andyisdead They induct other genres, presumably because they influenced rock and popular music in general. Once they did that, they started to have an obligation to historical relevance. Kraftwerk doesn't have to be a rock band - they influenced many bands that blend electronics with traditional rock instruments, and are pioneers in using the technology.

sexobscura: To be brutally honest, as much of a fan of SY as I have been for decades, even they themselves fell into a predictable pattern in terms of their sound and songwriting -- still better than most bands and artists out there, but there was no really new territory that they were exploring songwriting- and songcraft-wise over their last several albums. "NYC Ghosts And Flowers" was their last better-than-average album, in my opinion.

@@ballsforbrains1953 That kind of recognition should never be about mere sales figures. There's all sorts of people/bands who sold bucketfuls of records at their peak, but today you could hardly give their stuff away. That's the way of the world. Being recognised by the 'Hall of Fame' should be about the impact artists had on the scene when they came to fame, and the lasting influence they had on generations of musicians who followed. The Velvet Underground sold few records during their lifetime, but their influence remains as strong as ever.
@@ballsforbrains1953 i have to disagree with you. When i was a kid growing up in the 90s green day was kinda a joke and sonic youth was really popluar..maybe its a generational thing. When the 2000s hit green day kinda made that comeback and got a new group of fans but if green day has ever been a more popular band then sonic youth i think that is for sure debatable...and i might end up eating my own words and being proved totally wrong. RnRHoF honestly just has a bad track record in honouring Alternative Music. Bands like the Cure and Joy Division/New Order, Depeche Mode only got in recently which is just ridiculous long overdue. Whilst SY, Pixies, the Replacements, Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr, the Smiths and countless other alternative bands have largely been ignored for years.
Unless you’re a commercial and cultural darling like Nirvana or REM. Even if you influenced other acts already in HoF, you’re pretty much non-existent to those guys
This is not going to be a popular opinion but they should have broken up a long time ago. They should have broken up right after Murray Street, their last truly great album. They started out by being experimental, they changed the way that music was being made, but they kept on making variants of Daydream Nation over and over. I think it's pretty good that all four of them are forced to go back to being experimental, I just wish that it didn't take the breakup of a marriage to force them into that.
Jazz musicians change partners all the time and they should have done likewise.
Their final album, The Eternal, is solid. In my opinion on par with Murray Street. I for one am glad they kept going. They never lost it.
I disagree strongly, I think their later output is amongst their best specifically Sonic Nurse and Rather Ripped.
They didn't make anything else that sounded like Daydream Nation. Murray Street was the point where I couldn't connect with their music anymore.
Agreed. Murray street is their last great album, but I still love incinerate and sacred trickster.
Sonic nurse should be piled up, all copies set on fire and the masters thrown in a trash compactor. It's that awful.

@@joshuafult84 They weren't mainstream in terms of airplay and record sales. The NY rock media propped them up like they do with so many NY area bands. Great if you like their sound but they were a niche band and hard to say they had a lot of musical talent.

foo fighters went in first year of eligibility
foo fighters have 3 guitar players and a bassist. Put a ff record on and then play a who record or play John Entwhistle’s first solo album, put on a Melvins record. Hear a difference? Foo Fighters are some of the worst heavy handed songs ever recorded.
Dave as a young person was way cooler & definitely a distinctive drummer. He really morphed into a giant bag of

She is at least factual...people didn’t really care about their music. I knew no one in the 90s who owned a Sonic Youth cd. Their band name was always better then their music.
Sonic Youth was interesting but not HOF level. I know, there are plenty in there who shouldn't be but that does not change the fact that Sonic Youth shouldn't be.

Average is the last word any sane person would use to describe a band as groundbreaking and influential as Sonic Youth. Average in a modern soundscape, MAYBE, but considering they came out of 1980 with that sound. You're off your rocker.
