I keep reviewing this video as it has saved my coffee grinder from the appliance graveyard and kept our coffee beans grinding away, every day! Thank you so much for this instructional video, Baratza should be happy for your help!

Great condensed video! Helpful especially for someone who doesn’t keep their instruction manual. Would recommend unplugging your electronics before dissembling just to be safe in case of faulty motor or electricity shortage. Never know if water is around, better be safe than sorry 🙂
The Encore is a very solid little grinder for the money. Of course it isn't quite as consistent as some of the better offerings at the finer settings, but I use a pressurized portafilter for espresso and the Encore works fine for that. It is perfect for drip or french press too.
For $140 I don't think you can find a better grinder. And Baratza sells all the parts so if anything breaks you can fix it. They even have a pretty decently priced repair program if you're not comfortable doing the work yourself. They even have video and or photographic guides documenting all the repair procedures on their site. They have the motto on their site, "Don't dump it, fix it". It's refreshing to see a company that builds a consumer product with repairs in mind rather than to be another throw-away device that'll end up in a landfill after a couple years of service.
Oooof, I use my grinder daily, have never done this. i do not use any "oily" beans though. Gonna get grindz, never header of these either. There is a black rubber o-ring on the bottom burr @ 1:51 so suggested to remove and clean grove and re-install as well. Thanks, great video.
This was fantastic, thank you so much. One question (if you're still monitoring this video), will using the Grindz also help keep the chute clear? I just had to clean it because it was so clogged that it wouldn't grind. I was wondering if I still have to do this as well as the Grindz or would the Grindz help with that as well. Thank you again.
Hello! Grindz should help with keeping the chute a little more clear of grounds that are stuck due to oil buildup. That said, you'll want to use a brush if you have static causing buildup in that area (which is often the case).
I'll give the grindz a try, I've noticed that my grinder stops/jams up requiring smack in he side to kick it on again. I took it apart as you described and that helped a bit, but I'm wondering if coffee has gotten under the burr that's fixed in the machine... hmmm?
What are the yellow things you’re using to grind after re-assembly? I see no mention of what it is....they don’t look like grinds to me..grinds are same color as coffee
The product is Grindz from Urnex. They're supposedly better than rice, which according to Baratza's site can cause damage which they will not cover the repairs of under warranty. I'm guessing rice can be too hard for the burrs and the motor sometimes which can cause damage to gears or the burrs themselves. Grindz is made specifically for grinder cleaning so it's not hard enough to damage the grinder, and is made to be absorbent in order to clean the oils left by coffee.
Definitely not necessary to do this everyday! But it is good to do a deep clean every few months, along with more regular cleaning with Grindz every few week.
Hi Gail: I love my Barbara. I followed your excellent direction on how to clean, but when it came time to reassemble it the top would not go in. I spent hrs trying to figure it out, but to no avail. I believe the way to put back the middle section may not be accurate, I did 4pm red dot alignment, but did not solve the problem. Please help! Should that middle section be loose??
What would have been good to see was how much gunk was there before vacuuming, because a deal breaker for me is how much coffee is wasted by the burr grinders, for example, the capresso infinity retained so much coffee that it lost its appeal to me.
Why capful of Grindz ? When I had a class on home espresso I was told 5-10 pieces or until no grounds come with the Grindz. And it was demonstrated on the Rancilio Rocky doserless.
+Stefan Sigfinnsson Running more through the grinder won't hurt it. 5-10 pieces would probably get the job done, but we are just following the manufacture's instructions in this video.
+Jazz Mann We are always asked how to clean particular grinders. So we are working though some of the most popular ones! (We are almost done cleaning grinders! Thanks for sticking around) ;D
Felicia Visser I have a video on my channel using rice to clean one of my coffee grinders. It's a different model than this one shown but the principle is the same. There are also several more videos on TH-cam showing this same method.
Baratza claims that rice can cause mechanical damage to the grinder. They won't cover repairs for damage caused by running rice through the grinder and suggest using Grindz. I wasn't aware of this previously, but I can see how it would make a difference. If a hard piece of ricer were to cause strain on the gears you could strip them. Thankfully you can repair pretty much any problem with the Encore and Baratza sells all the parts you need.
7 years later and still relevant. Thank you! 🎉❤

This is brilliant. I'm sure many have suggested it, but Gail makes it fun!
She really does!

Came here from Reddit after getting the Encore as my very first burr grinder. Thanks for making it easier to get into this hobby, Gail + SCG!
THANK YOU...thought I'd have to buy a new Encore but through your easy steps I was able to revive it again!
Thank you, Gail! You are SO helpful, to me, through these videos!❤
The best explanation for this machine mille grazie Gail!
Thanks! I was ready to buy a new grinder. Just saved $100!
Thanks so much. I took apart and cleaned, then was not grinding correctly.....your video and the red dot at 4:00 o'clock solved everything.
Great condensed video! Helpful especially for someone who doesn’t keep their instruction manual.

+SwarthyPlinker We love this grinder for pour over as well!

Baratza even has a very easy repair program. Unfortunately my Encore needed the motor replaced, paid the $45 and I received it within a week.
Gracias Pablo de Argentina
Thanks Gail!
I usually unplug when taking it apart to be safe!
Thank you making this vid! Made things super simple to clean
This was fantastic, thank you so much.

What is the yellow beans you put in to clean it? Sorry my english hearing not good :)) thx
Cool! Thank you! 🙏
I need to know if this grinder can be used in the United States because it works with 220 volts.
Thank you!

Possible. Give it a good cleaning under the bean hopper as well!
What are the yellow things you’re using to grind after re-assembly? I see no mention of what it is....they don’t look like grinds to me..grinds are same color as coffee
🤣🤣🤣

sorry maybe I've misunderstood but it's really necessary to dismantle the grinder every day...?

Seattle Coffee Gear thank you for respond :-)

Can you do a video about cleaning Mahlkönig (Home) Vario grinder?
It's the same for all grinders.
Is calibration often needed for this Encore grinder?
can you jus it for full coffee machines
I hope you unplug it first before doing any cleaning. 🙃👍
What are those white beans?
Where can I buy the rubber ring?
I don't have a shop vac...A cap full of what?
Great video, a lot of people never clean their grinders and it ruins the taste of the coffee.
I don’t have a shop vac.
step 1, buy a shop vac
😂
Ahh thank you~ I always forget that the little red part goes at 4 o clock XD
Glad this helped!
That's why I just watched! 3 years later... :)
How about the brush that comes with the Baratza? Is that not good to clean the burr?
brush removes coffee particles. The cleaning tablet remove accumulated oils which will go rancid if stucked in the machine for too long.
Oh great! Now I have to buy a shop-vac to clean my coffee grinder 🤪
Thanks for the post, by the way what is the name of that yellow "bean" you grind through to thoroughly clean the burr?
It's called Grindz!
I like this lady :)
Can you make a version of this that doesn't involve having a shop vac?
What would have been good to see was how much gunk was there before vacuuming, because a deal breaker for me is how much coffee is wasted by the burr grinders, for example, the capresso infinity retained so much coffee that it lost its appeal to me.
Miss Gail. 😢

It's so you buy more.
I miss you 🥰
I miss Gail!
this lady seems badass... like she's seen things
That's funny. A thumbs-up for you.
I feel like this exact video with a different grinder gets posted every week
+Jazz Mann We are always asked how to clean particular grinders. So we are working though some of the most popular ones! (We are almost done cleaning grinders! Thanks for sticking around) ;D
I use rice at the grinder's finest setting. I'm amazed at how much junk it cleans out.
+David Bergin I use dry rice too. It does a great job of cleaning out any residual grounds or oils left behind. I use a medium to coarse setting.
dry rice? i've to try..can u make some video bout it?
Felicia Visser I have a video on my channel using rice to clean one of my coffee grinders. It's a different model than this one shown but the principle is the same. There are also several more videos on TH-cam showing this same method.
can u give me the link of ur video ?bout using rice to clean the grinder?

try using compressed air.🐈
What's with the popping noises in the recent videos? Tell Gail to stop biting the microphone, please. ;-)
