  • Many video makers are angry. Angry for being demonetized, deplatformed, or angry because major video platforms prioritize corporate content over independent creators.
    Fortunately, people have alternatives, and one that is really huge right now is called Odysee. With over 20 million active monthly users, it's the hot new place to upload video content. And the technology it's base on... is decentralized.

      If that is the case, then burn every book people disagree with, oh wait yeah that's right Hitler and the Nazi's did that, so then that means if all disagree with "Mein Kampf" we should burn that book by Hitler. Just wipe it from the face of the earth? How would we learn history then?
      Back to "I wouldn't have a problem with content being taken down based on thorough fact checking" and who is doing it, far left, far right, both, or libertarians / independents? And who is to say the info is correct on fact checking, An AI doing fact checking who or how is this AI trained and what values is it given.

    • @a0flj0
      @a0flj0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SgtDreTecKeGamer You seem not to understand the notion of fact. Facts don't need somebody to state them, or to check them, to be true. Somebody contradicting a fact, even a large number of people contradicting a fact, does not make it false.
      To give you an example, glaciers melting is a fact. The ice cap of Greenland melting is also a fact. These are facts everybody interested can check for him himself - just take a look at maps depicting ice covered areas over the last 20 years. To make any statement to the contrary isn't exercising your freedom of opinion, or of expression, it's a plain lie.
      To give you another example, pretending that white people are inherently better than black people is plain racism, and has nothing to do with freedom of expression. Without some form of regulation, how do you prevent such things being spread on a publicly accessible platform?
      The problem with facts is that in an increasingly complex world, fact checking - by consumers, not by (self-)appointed entities - is increasingly difficult and requires increasingly more effort, with very few people willing to spend that effort. This, in turn, makes it increasingly easy to twist reality, at a relatively low cost, for nation-states, large corporations and other such powerful entities. How do you counter that, on a completely unregulated platform? The other way around, how do you prevent the regulating authority to in effect become a censor?
      I don't have an answer to either question, but I believe both are real problems. That's why I believe that a platform refusing to take any action is bound to fall into one of two extremes. It will either become a morass of misinformation pushed by interested entities, such as nation states, political parties and/or corporations, or it will become ruled by a mob of fools with more time to spare than wits to spend it wisely, ignoring and suppressing anything that's counter to their views. Neither outcome should be protected by the first amendment, IMO.

    • @lucass8119
      @lucass8119 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@a0flj0 My opinion is facts don't really exist. In this universe, there is no objective truth, only perspective. We see the world through our own eyes, and we cannot possibly know how other see the world. We may think we know, and we may assume they see the world as we do, but there is no way to verify this, because there is no "third party" objective truth we consult. We assume others see the color Green as we do, but do they really? This question is unanswerable.
      We believe there to be facts because many or all people agree on a certain observation. For example, we all agree the sky is blue, so this is our fact. But, we can never verify this. What if everyone else saw the sky as green, and they lied? More over, if everyone lies in the same way, does it become reality? For example, if everyone observed horses to be animals, is this reality? How could you know? Who or what would you ask?
      This may seem philosophical or useless to consider, but this becomes pretty important when we talk about governments and the information we're given. Propaganda, in particular, abuses the inherent lack of objective truth in our universe. If enough people believe something, it simply becomes true, because there is no way to tell it isn't true. If I say I can fly, and everyone observes me flying, then I'm flying. If governments or corporations train people over enough time to believe something, then it just becomes our new reality, and the old reality ceases to exist, and by ceasing to exist and not being remembered, it therefore never existed in the first place.

That would be a huge and sobering concern. Sometimes we make mistakes, sometimes we change our minds. No matter what other remedial measures are available, to never be able to remove a video that no longer reflects our views or that we no longer want our name on could be a deal-killer for some. I would love to believe that Odysee was a viable replacement for TH-cam, but when I tried it out sadly it was a very poor viewer experience.
    Picture quality fluctuated wildly during playback which is distracting. It kept switching to 480p, requiring me to manually switch back to 1080p or 720p where 1080p wasn't available; that's annoying as my computer and broadband link can easily cope with high res video. UHD/4k videos seemed entirely absent so I uploaded one. It was unwatchable, stuttering and stalling repeatedly when I tried to play it back, so I deleted it. I have no problem watching UHD/4k videos on TH-cam or on other web sites that contain them, so please don't try and tell me the problem was at my end. If you are making some kinds of educational "talking heads" type content then this isn't necessarily a problem, but if you want to upload anything where picture quality matters Odysee seems useless at the moment. Even watching at 1080p the picture was noticeably worse than it is at the same resolution on TH-cam.
    If they sort those problems out I'll be there like a shot, but until that's done I am not even going to watch there as the poor image quality is painful on a 32 inch monitor.

    In the 1990's and before, we didn't have anything like TH-cam, and television networks made business decisions about what to broadcast or not. ("Openness" was a government regulator enforcing censorship based on complaints.) With TH-cam, things are vastly more open than we could have ever imagined. I'm not excusing Google's arbitrary censorship here. I'm offering perspective that we have made big progress with TH-cam, but we've outgrown having corporations acting as arbiters of truth.

      @@NaomiBrockwellTV I’m getting used to Odysee. After decades of TH-cam it’s hard to change old habits, muscle memory and expectations of certain functionality. However I’d rather use a platform “by creators for creators” than a Google platform.

    im skeptical of odysee, how will odysee deal with harassment, misinformation, and hate speach, who decides? How do creaters make money? Ads? Donations? How decides the ads? How are videos recommended? Who chooses that? Who runs odysee, how are they getting paid and paying for the running of the website?

    my biggest issue is that, plain and simple, odysee just has so little on it. Don't get me wrong, a few creators I watch are on there, but while there is a wide breadth of content, there isn't a lot of variety for any given section of content. For instance, veritasium is on there, but I don't recall smarter everyday, practical engineering, etc. being on there. I think for odysee to really take off someone has to make an API or something that automatically syncs your youtube content with odysee to eliminate the overhead most content creators would experience having to run a channel on both.

  • @MarekzAnglii
    @MarekzAnglii 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I had about 35 Playlists with literally a few thousand videos on my channel, saved over many years. NONE of them were created by me, they were all from other content creators, I simply saved them mostly for my own 'library' of interesting information and international news. But one day I saw that YT had deleted an entire Playlist consisting of approximately 500 videos. The reason given was 'hate speech'.
    Even though I explained the above to YT, and asked them "which video of the 500 contained hate speech" they responded within 24 hours (nowhere near enough time to actually view 500 videos), without answering my question and simply said that they stood by their decision! Thing is I KNOW there weren't any videos with hate speech, let alone the whole Playlist.
    Someone at YT probably didn't ideologically approve of the content of a few videos, and deleted the entire Playlist out of spite. So I quickly decided to just make ALL of my Playlists private.

      Extremists... Like animal torturers, murderers, paedophiles, snuff films, etc
      I think they would be widely considered as quite extreme expressions of human behaviour, wouldn't you? Do you think they should get a platform on equal footing to cooking videos?
      There is a time and a place for free speech, indeed I think it is an extremely important power to have, but not everyone should have it. Power comes with responsibility and not everyone is responsible enough to be allowed to have free speech... Some people are quite naive and don't quite understand what some members of our species want to watch. Some people are just sick and giving them the privilege of a global platform is just plain irresponsible.
      Imagine if Charles Manson had garnered a few million followers world-wide on an open video-sharing platform, or some other wanna-be cult leader? Flat Earth? Quantum Spirituality? All useless, valueless lies and rhetoric.
      What's the use of free speech if it doesn't actually do anyone or anything any good?

What you fail to mention is Rumble. But this is an old video. And Rumble has made alot of changes where they are now monetizing creators as well as good as YT. Russell Brand, Steven Crowder and more are making Rumble an equivalent platform. In the end, creators need to make money to support themselves and their activities.
