  • John Allan Cameron grew up in Cape Breton and was raised in a musical family. His uncle Dan R. MacDonald was a brillaint composer and character. His brother John Donald is a great fiddler. His mother played the fiddle and sang. John Allan passed away today and I wanted to put up some footage from a 70's CBC video of him and his family. I am finishing a book on John Allan's uncle so I have a fondness for the Cameron family and want those who don't know them to get a glimpse of this musical family.

I really miss John Allan, I have every album he ever recorded, including the album Fiddle: Cape Breton Symphony, and I have purchased every cd remaster I can find. I was lucky enough to shake hands with him when he played at the Shawville Fair in 1981. He was as geniuine a person could be, a great human being. His talents were vastly underrated as a virtuoso guitarist, especially on that Martin 12 string he had! My favourite album, sadly went the the delete bins, it was called WEDDINGS WAKES AND OTHER THINGS and on it was full side of phenonmenal guitar playing. I still play his records and cds daily, and I have 95 of his recordings on my Samsung Galaxy. I sang many of his songs to my daughters and now I sing them to my son. The Irish Miner, from Get There By Dawn, is one of their favourites.
I get goosebumps when I hear the intro to AND THE BAND PLAYED WALTZING MATILDA, the most amazing song on his FREEBORN MAN lp. He was the BEST and his legacy continues to this very day.
A shout out to John Donald, please re release WEDDINGS WAKES AND OTHER THINGS in it's ENTIRETY on CD! and FREEBORN MAN ON CD AS WELL!!!!
Please John Donald, you have released 3 of his original albums, but still LORD OF THE DANCE, FREEBORN MAN, WEDDINGS WAKES I am still waiting!
Thank you CAMERON family for keeping JOHN ALLAN'S MUSIC LEGACY ALIVE IN 2016!
    Sincerely,
    John

First time my Dad and I went over to Scotland - I was 10 . On that flight over was John Allan. It was a ceilidh at 40,000 feet. We were all singing away as we came into land at the old Prestwick airport. Great memories with my Dad.

I remember when I went to an Anne Murray concert in Halifax in the seventies and he opened for her. OMG....had NO idea how funny he was. Nearly stole the show. After that I'd go see him when he had his own live show.

My Father(Malcolm Dewar) just told me the first time he went to Cape Breton he brought John Allan and his Mother back with him to Ottawa. Thought that was pretty neat.

My cousin Dwayne Cote had performed and toured with John Allan Cameron for a brief time in the mid-90's.
