I regularly watch a half dozen gardening channels and I must say you have become one of my favorites. I love your knowledge, skills, energy, and affection for Tuck.
James, I have a suggestion for you. Instead of attaching the hinged hoophouse at the top of the garden bed, make it a bit larger to cover the entire bed and rest on the earth. The larger you make the footprint on the soil, the longer you will be able to grow. It will keep the grow bed and ground from freezing.
@@brandywineblue same way really, you can just tip it up, or you can bend rebar in an upside l and use as hinges by drilling into end of frame, and put one that locks on the front side.
DUDE! I literally watched your other hop house video, again, this morning! My wife and I went to the big box store to get the wood, pipe, and fittings this afternoon. I'll be teaching a group of young men (14-16 y/o) how to build one on one of my 4x8 raised beds this week. I really like this design with the stakes and support in the back. I think your other video was one of the first I saw, in regard to gardening, and I've been dreaming of building one ever since. I really appreciate the information you share. Keep it up! Give Tuck a good belly rub and a carrot for me!
You're leading the way, James! Helping to introduce Birdies to the US and showing how to use them like any other bed with your innovative hinged hoophouse is awesome. Good job!
Bro I love how you're so hyped up about your gardens. I love mine and I speak to my plants. I don't care what anyone may think of me, but plants love our positive energy. Keep up the great work JP. Bless you, Peace, Spenta
James, in my opinion, you do the best videos on youtube. At seventy seven years of age, I still learn a lot from your videos. Without "Tuck" there would be something missing though. I built a couple hoop houses about ten years ago by watching your videos. Keep up the good work and I'll keep watching.
EXCELLENT LOVE THE BRACE O THE BACK. THAT IS WHAT I WILL ADD TO MINE. I WILL PASS THIS ON TO MY FAMILY. I'M DOING ONE IN A SQUARE SQUARE SHAPE WITH THE NET I'M ON THE WEST COAST. THANKS JAMES
Hello again........Suggestions here please.....just offering 1. Make the long sides where the hinges goes full length......This will allow hinge to screw to the cross grain of the 2x4 for strength (screwing to end grain will weaken quickly) 2. Using the long side all the way across allows the pvc caps to also be attached with a cross grain , not on the end of the 2x4....consider a small washer on screw holding pvc caps to 2x4 for added strength 3. With your larger beds additional cross brace instead of electrical tape to hold in place screw them from the inside into the hoop section. 4. great idea with weatherstripping Love your channel and your energy is contagious
I am addicted to your show, love tuck too, i almost want a little dog to be in the garden with me. I am so inspired by your positive energy and encouragement that i am inspired to invite you to my cold, wet, windy home in bottom of NZ to help me start a Garden. I've been watching your videos for a while now, so I saw the last hoop house and double hoop house you built. I glad to have watched this one too. You made superb how-to videos. You are clear, concise, detailed, and patient. The camerawork is great. Having minimal experience, I am sure that I can do this. When it comes time, I'll be watching your videos again and again. Thanks also for the math (13:55). I appreciate this video as much as the previous hoop house videos, because if I decide to invest in these metal planters ($$$), I can do this without compromising the investment. Great job on these videos. Thank you.
Thank you so much for doing these videos, you think of everything that is needed! This is so helpful. I do love seeing Tuck and one can tell that he loves being in the garden with you!
I started using Shou sugi ban on all my outdoor wood projects (unless the wood is pressure treated). A light burn of the wood helps it last longer. You can still paint it if you do not like the color.
Great designs, I built a hinged raise bed hooped cover today according to your video, thanks! The only change I’d make is to use a Forster bit and counter sink the 1/2” pvc caps approx 3/4” then screw then in, makes them much more secure, but thanks again!!!
Great design; solid, and I like how it doesn't compromise the integrity of the Birdie's Bed. Very useful for most sitiations, and a wonderful contribution to the gardening community. My situation, calls for a bit different solution, but as I accumulate more Birdie's Beds in the future, for other crops, I'm going to keep your design in my gardening list. Thank you so much, James, for sharing your ideas, innovations, enthusiasm, and Tuck, with the rest of us. My parents, used to have a Yorkie, about half Tuck's size. They are wonderful, loyal companions.
Hi James. Can you do a video on how you designed the layout of your garden? What thought process went into deciding what type of trees to plant first, how far to space them out, how you setup pathways, raised beds, grape vines trellises, etc.?
Thanks for your clever tips with the hoop house construction. I just purchased another bed bringing up to twelve. But I don't fear the frost or harsh winters. It will be for shade cloth for my hot summers. Thanks. 🌵
Thank you for sharing. I just purchased several galvanized beds and want one for my brassicas so I don't have to fight the cabbage worms in my area. This year I made tulle bags and they work but I see this being so much easier to just raise and check for critters.
I have been looking for a easy but effective way to cover my grow beds wooden and my metal farm tubs. Great demo! Also, thanks for mentioning high winds. I'll be out on the high AZ, nearly barren desert. The winds in spring and summer are rather annoying, at the least 😂 I'll most likely create ancient waffle style gardens with some areas utilizing lumber and hoop designs. I have considered using EMT tubing with an electric bender. The winds are so strong, a 15' tall X 11' wide polygon dome built with 2x4's flew off the ground and landed 100 feet away! Lesson learned ✅️
Good call on using the foam weather strip to seal the bottom edge. I built your other version of double hinged hoop house on a 5x10 bed. For the frame I added a center support, metal corner brackets and wood corner bracing. It has been working really well. To prop it open I use a brick, 30" long or 50" long piece of wood depending on how much sun and the outside temperature. I need to attach a rope to to prevent it getting blown open by the wind.
I was driving home today and your video popped into my head. I'm thinking about using small door hinges with removable pins? Then I can detach them and reattach them any time without screwing and unscrewing them every time!???

James, your energy and enthusiasm are amazing. we luv your videos and we super luv Tuck! What other dog eats veggies?
Thank again James, excellent video and your idea not to have it attached to the steel bed and thanks for the build list & links. Looking forward to my first garden in ages! Bought a few tools that I've always wanted and now have some great ideas in which to use them, again thanks! And always enjoy little buddy Tuck it's so cool to watch him chose then dig his own veggie treats, I think his birthday is in April so Happy Birthday Tuckster (Apr 2021 in Oregon) Hope we get to see you, Tuck & the Food Forests soon : )
I am going to build this for my new birdie.
Tuck you are the best garden bud!
You could split a old water hose lengthwise and put it on the top edge of the metal bed to make a free seal
Your video makes this easy to follow and make this hinged hoop house 🏡
This was really helpful - I have a few of the steel troughs and I was wondering how I could have a cover for them during the cold season.
