How to build a protective cover for your raised garden bed. It serves as garden bed fence to prevent animals from attacking your crop. We had a lot of squirrel problems last year without the protection on our raised beds, so this year we decided to build a raised bed enclosure with fencing to protect our vegetable crop.

4:32 props to hubby for daring to, without gloves. I’m usually a sad loner when building these and I’ll use a center punch.. but my boys are coming of age and they’ll soon be my tool monkeys :) DIY heaven!
Maravilloso trabajo en equipo!!!!!
Hermosa propuesta, muy interesante, gracias!!!!
Desde Argentina, Buenos Aires les enviamos saludos!!!!
Wow, great ideas to protect crops from the birds and possums. Thanks so much for you video clip.
That is one of the nicest vegetable cages I’ve seen, I would like to have one just like it and another but with exclusion netting rather than chicken wire Thank you for sharing
Thank you for the video. Your raised bed enclosure inspired me to make my own. I plan to make each side separately and then put them together. I have three raised beds.
Glad it was helpful and good luck with your project :)
How did it work?
Such a great design! Really beautiful!
just the idea i was looking for, will consider using it on my allotment of raised beds
Good idea and we are seriously thinking to make ours like yours, thanks a lot for your video 🌹
I love this idea! So clever!
Love the concept! 😍
Very nice and well done. I was looking for something like this as well.
Thanks so much for this tutorial and how to book! I just bought it and look forward to making these for my garden beds. The squirrels won't know what hit em after I'm done!! Bwahahahahaha!!!!
Awesome build! Great teamwork! I love it! 💚
but she didn't give any credit to her partner! :P
Thanks for this video squirrel, wild cats & raccoons are my headache. Especially raccoons. This is GREAT. Have someone coming over to give an estimate on one built. Searching YT since last night. Today found your design & choose yours. So excited. Thanks for sharing!!!!
So happy to hear that! Hope your project goes well :)
i heard that squirrels don't like shiny stuff; im thinking of alaminum papers...🙏
Very cool Idea!!!
Fantastic!!
Great project. Gave me good ideas for my raised bed...
glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing! We're going to try and build this for our raised garden bed. The critters keep steeling our seeds and vegetables.
That was excellent!
Thank you for the video.
LOOKS NICE
Thank you .. well done . Horray 👍☝💝
Looks good, for me I would use a more fine mesh. Yesterday hail damaged a lot of my tomatoes and more could be forecast in the next few days
1/4 " hardware cloth works great. Keeps critters out while letting in pollinators. ♡
Very nice, I hope this helps with my brown bear problem!
I will get my neighbor to construct mine!!
Absolutely perfect!
This is excellent
Very nice👍👍👍
I used this template to make one for my 6x4 garden. Thanks for the guidance.
I'm so happy to hear that! thanks for sharing.
I love this! Thank you! What was the size of the width of wood
真漂亮!!!得涂防腐剂!👍👍👍🎉🎉🎉
Very nice
This is awesome! This is the best I have seen with the open door. How did you attach the cover to the raised bed? By using nailing down?
Thanks! I just place it on top because it’s kind of heavy. You can screw it to the raise bed
This looks great. Thank you for sharing. It looks like you posted this about 3 years ago. How has it weathered since in terms of twisting and warping? Are you pleased with the 2x2 boards? What do you think about using 1x2s for the doors?
Im going to use your beautiful design for my Tomatoes that are in Lg pots. The unit will sit on level ground and I will wire the bottom so the Squirrels can't dig in. My question to you is I want it to be 7' high 3' wide. do you think I should add a middle brace 1/2 way up the 7' high back and side panels? I will build it the same as you did with the 2 half's. The only difference will be that I will not have the wire on the inside middle where they come together. I want it to be all one unit. They will be screwed together.
Super 👍😉
Going to try this with flexible bird netting instead! (scared of the lead in chicken wire) but this is awesome!!
good luck with your project!
We've got lots of squirrels and they chew right through that plastic. Dare say plastic netting is no challenge to racoons either. Got a family of those nearby also.
This is awesome! This was the inspiration I need! How long were the small 45 degree pieces?
it doesn't have to be accurate. mine was around 6"
How did the 2 x 2's weather over the seasons? Did they warp any or did they stay usable? How many years did it work?
squirrels have been having fine dining on my maters...I want to do this tomorrow, will be pressed for time as we go on vacation friday. but I want to have some edible fruits left!!! thanks for sharing, subscribed...
"fine dining" made me laugh haha. but yeah they definitely enjoyed themselves with all the edibles lol
@@HydrangeaTreehouse just wondering can birds or squirrels get through the chicken wire, thanks great vid!
larry h I haven’t seen it. The chicken wire holes are pretty small, so only insets get in so far.
@@HydrangeaTreehouse ok cool,thanks
i heard that squirrels don't like shiny stuff; im thinking of alaminum papers...🙏
***BRAVO!!!BISOUS DE FRANCE***
I really enjoyed this video. Thank you. I'm was desperate in my battle against monkeys 😩😩😩
oh my! monkeys! that sounds really challenging
Monkeys???? Wth do you live?

Great work! I love it and am making my own to protect my blueberries.
Tell me please what is this 1 inch wiring.? And is that sufficient to keep birds out?
Thank you . Great design
For us it was sufficient to keep birds out, after all only mid to big birds are interested in our blueberries lol
nice what size is it?
I'm growing squash and bush beans in a grow bag; how tall and wide should i build my protective fence? Have a problem with squirrels and raccoons, etc
I built my cover at 4 ft tall to account for growing pole beans and squash. 4-6 ft tall is good, just tall enough that you can reach them. Width is more of a preference, depending how far each seedling need to be apart from each other.
How would you keep mice out?
how does this cage look like now after 2 years?
I finished something similar to your project today, took three days. I also used chicken wire, but I have small mice raiding my vegetables. Maybe they will go through the chicken wire, I'll have to see if they do.
Do you still have trouble with the mice? That's what I'm watching this for as well. 🙂
@@lesliem.534 So far no mice got in. Maybe they haven't found my veggies yet.

Hardware cloth may be what you need instead if they are getting in.
@@lisastuhley9577 I built two caged garden boxes last year but no doors on them. My garden box lids open up at the bottom of the lid and I flip the lid back. I used 1/4” hardware cloth around the entire box and stapled some on the very bottom of the box before I added dirt. No groundhog, mice’ snakes, birds, etc. can get thru. No problems whatsoever last summer except for the Japanese Beetles for a month but I solved that problem too by putting Tulle netting around my tomato plants. They can’t get thru that. Chicken wire has holes big enough for small rodents & bugs to get thru.
Well done! Thank you for sharing, how much cost the saw and where you bought it?
It was probably like 100+. If you check out my blog post in description, I linked the exact one I had.
What type of wood did you use for the actual garden bed?
I wish I could manage this. My arthritis is so bad I can barely close a clamp.
u should regularly intake turmeric, either its powder or the roots itself. it slowly heals, coz its natural 🙏
Thank you for this video as it is exacly what I was looking for with my raised boxes. I will be using hardware cloth instead because we are dealing with rats and squirrels. My question is, do I need to do those small angled pieces for the corners or can I just use a metal brace of sorts? I will continue to research but thought I'd ask here in case you have a suggestion.
Hi Lisa, I think metal braces is a great idea! I personally didn't try out but would love to hear how yours turns out :)
@@HydrangeaTreehouse I used metal braces and it's wobbly.
How much did all the material cost?
What angle did you cut the corner pieces?
45 degrees
Awesome. Can you build mine please?😊
1:16 ah, the classic man-crack appears.. 🙈 Great video and awesome team work there!
Can you add the measurements if you don’t mind?
I’m unclear how you attaches this to the cement cinder block raised beds? And do you think you could convert this to a spring or late fall greenhouse by covering with plastic?
And thank you fir the great video!!
My raised bed is made of wood, not cinder block. It looks gray because it is aged haha! I just placed the cover on top because it is pretty heavy.
Any wood preserver used to prolong lifetime of wood?
I didn't, but I'd recommend that!
Would have been helpful to have a commentary of what you're doing, also measurements.
Check out the description - I have a blog post with more details
Do chipmunk fit through it?
I'm not sure because we don't have wild chipmunk here, but the chicken wire holes are pretty small
i heard that squirrels don't like shiny stuff; im thinking of alaminum papers...🙏
let me know how it turned out!
@@HydrangeaTreehouse they dont get close to it, so it helps :)
❤️
How much did this cost?
I don't remember since it's been a while, but I linked all the materials in a post you can find in description
@@HydrangeaTreehouse how do you seal the garden beds? I don't want to poison my produce
Would you ever sell these?
probably not, but I shared a few alternatives on my blog if you don't want to DIY: hydrangeatreehouse.com/how-to-choose-raised-garden-bed-cover/
@@HydrangeaTreehouse THANKS!!!
If my raised garden box is 4’ x 8’, could you help me determine the dimensions of the boards I need and how much chicken wire? Great job by the way!
Draw it out on a piece of paper. Lots of good skills are learned by figuring this type of thing out. Make a little scale size model out of straws or other material if you need to. I think it’s part of the fun very satisfying!
Looks Great. Unfortunately it will not keep out rats and mice.
ไม่ได้เรื่อง
Looks great, but the cost of lumber right now , it would cost $5,000
Nope the cost of wood is HELLA Expensive this would leave me broke big time
nice build, but a tutorial gives instructions...This was a video watching what you guys did with no guidance or help for others.
I do have a written step by step instructions linked in the description. You should check it out.
@@HydrangeaTreehouse thank you, I didn't see that.
@@HydrangeaTreehouse You do not indicate what length are your 45 degree cut braces
Very nice
