G'day Martin, I left Hampshire for warmer climes (Western Australia) in 1968 and have done a little bit of turning since then. I wanted to ask about Hampshire Sheen but you answered my questions on your new site. Good to watch you turning the walnut box with ebony finial. Looks great.

Another information packed and enjoyable episode Martin. Congratulations on the Axy gig, and also for the Hampshire Sheen decision, I think it was a good one matey :). The box certainly breaks with convention, in a number of ways, but it has a unique quality to it, and it sounds good too when the lid is put on!!
Take care mate, and if you can't hear me, disconnect your headphones.....lol ;)
    Take care
    Mike

Hi good episode as normal , as an ex panel beater i was using lead in the old days as dent filler , to get it to stick we tinned the area with tinning solution and passed a blow torch over to coat the area with a thin layer of lead ,might work with wood :)

    Hello Martin,
Apologies for being a few days behind with my comment.
Things seem to be going well for you which is no surprise as you are on top of your game.
The walnut box is really lovely and I look forward to seeing the video on it.
Also, I'm not surprised Hampshire Sheen is selling well. I've used it quite a bit and I have no intention of using any other polish in the future.
It's understandable you are a little bit anxious about your demo with Axminster but I have no doubt it will go down well and it's only a hint of things to come.
I've been badly distracted from turning this week but I've planned a whole day in my workshop tomorrow. I've recently made an acquaintance of a gentleman who is not exactly a tree surgeon but part of his occupation is removing fallen or dead trees from gardens etc. I've alerted him to my interest in wood and a few days ago he dropped off a few pieces of a specimen tree which has been dead for about 5 years and therefore fully seasoned. I can't quite identify the wood and one possibility is that it is laburnum which is stunning when turned. Anyway, I plan to turn a bowl out of it tomorrow and give it to him as a present and hopefully he will be suitably impressed to keep an eye out for me when removing trees in the future.
    In the meantime happy turning.
    Best wishes,
    Alan,

Good man Martin !! keep up the good work ;-)...... The very best of luck with the new company too mate....
As an ex plumber, I would suggest plumbers flux to help allow the Moulton lead flow and stick to the wood !! But I would also suggest caution as lead is very poisonous !!
    Good luck !!
    Steve....

It's great to hear how well the Hampshire Sheen is going. i haven't used mine yet but i will when I am doing stuff that needs a finish but, right now, I'm on a production run of pestles and mortars... a super project for anyone wanting to take something away in a day because you have faceplate and spindle work with a basic shape that can be whatever you decide in terms dimensions. I'm finding that men like big pestles and mortars so maybe that would be worth considering for a one-day class. You can get the students to hollow with a scraper rather than with a bowl gouge.
Would it be worth dedicating one day a week to Hampshire Sheen for production and promotion to allow you to concentrate on just that and then have tins packed and ready for a shipping label so that you can post tins as required without losing shop time?
Your woodturning journey is very interesting so thank you for sharing it with us.
    Best Wishes, Brendan.

+Martin Saban-Smith Hi Martin, I use Sycamore/Maple for the pestles and mortars because it's food safe but Beech, Ash, or any food-safe wood would do. I finish the outside and bottom to 120 so that it doesn't skild across a worktop and dry sand the inside to 500 which burnishes it and leaves a good, clean, surface. I don't add any finish at all. I have a video in the can , as they say, but I need to edit it. Maybe soon. It's a quick, basic, project with all aspects of turning so good for a beginner.
I'm delighted that the Hampshire sheen is going well and that you are also getting to develop the product features as well. I haven't had a chance to try it yet because I'm on a huge pen run right now but, hopefully, I'll get a chance next week.
      Best Wishes,
      Brendan.

+daibhidhSCO I have only had the tin of Hampshire Sheen for a few weeks but I went and checked it just now and I can tell you it is exactly the same colour and consistency as when I got it so I don't think it will dry out.

Great idea to separate Hampshire into its own entity now. I think you'll find you made a wise choice.

Ltd company? Mmmm! the taxman has long teeth. Make sure you get a good registered certified accountant AND check how much they will charge you, which might eat up so much of the profit of 'Hampshire Sheen' for it to be not worth the cost! I have had Ltd. company situation in the oil industry. So many goalposts were changed in tax regulations that I dissolved the company!
