Music: “The Gift” by Reed Mathis.
The 0-6-0T was built by Baldwin for the E.J. Lavino Company in PA, in 1923. She's been in the collection at Roanoke since it was located at Wasena Park, prior to the great flood of 1987. I haven't seen her on display at Roanoke in a very long time, not sure what they're doing with her. She has a sister preserved at Steamtown too.
Perhaps moving her for her well deserved restoration!
I have a friend I just showed this video to and he wants to know if the motive is for sale
@@Trainmaster437 I seriously doubt it. Again, it’s probably going to be restored and put on display in the museum.
I would like to know where they were taking that tank engine
@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyan Most likely to a restoration place near or at the museum. They will most likely then put it on display there.
And the steam loco is compressed air chuffing, the valves must bein great shape!
I call it breathing
2:16 nice catch of that MARC coach on the end of a freight train
3:34 BC Rail cowl unit
3:43 uP, CSX, and CN in one lash-up
6:00 there's that unusual GREX loco again with its horn mounted under the frame
6:58 with an excavator dropping ties from a conrail gondola
8:49 wow, BNSF 7695 with its yellow logos (seen again at 14:24)
11:30 nice catch of that GE 44 tonner in Texarkana
13:00 nice to see some CN MOW equipment
14:48 nice to see some of the VMOT equipment being shuffled around, starting with two N&W cabooses and an ALCO T6
17:12 and EJ Lavino and Co 0-6-0T steam locomotive 34, a 1923 Baldwin. this type was most likely the basis for the USATC S100 built during WWII
19:16 you don't wanna miss this unusual Amtrak manuever
36:08 wow! two CSX freight locomotives pulling the OCS with its two recently repainted F40s
3:34 Absolutely. One great Draper Taper. Rapido came out with an N scale model.
17:20, I think the engine may be going to be restored but idk
Let's hope that Steam Engine is on it's way to restoration.
And to run again for a long time
run it on the mainline on horshoe curve put cement in the dome gobless
Yeah. It is a pretty cool steam tank engine.
it is
Weird to think there are still locomotives like that just laying around.
The EMD BL2s at 22:17 are a treat for me. The Monon ran them (often paired with an F3) to my home town of Michigan City, Indiana when I was a kid.
Based on the #56 and the snow cove I think that was an old BAR Loco.
Love the BL-2, great looking design IMHO
@@erniepike3902 Thanks, Ernie and Will. Now that I remember, the C&O also ran BL-2s through my hometown. They were passenger versions with steam generators and I would spot them on passenger trains.
Both were once with S&NC.
The 2 (two) BL2 Diesels were here in Green Bay, at the NRRM, from 2001 to 2007. But then sold to the SNC RR in N.Y., and both rebuilt for their excursion. But the NRRM should have rebuilt them at their museum and should have been repainted either Silver, or Red to make a ROCK ISLAND RED ROCKET commuter train by using the 2 AEROTRAIN coaches built in 1956 by G.M. , to run around the short circular track. Plus mainline excursions on the C.N.R., Plus the E.&L.S. RR To the North. Yet Previously they had been stored on the WSORR in Janesville, WI., at the former X-Milwaukee Road Roundhouse. And also owned by the late Mr. Glenn Monhart, and also used on the 3 former shortlines, which had previously also owned those same tracks; Janesville and Southwestern. And the Wisconsin and Calumet, W.I.C.T. And the Chicago, Madison and Northern. The 2 BL2's were painted differently: 52 was in the orange of the JSW. And 56 was still in the old BAR Blue from Maine. I have the photographs that show the 2 BL2 engines parked next to the 1956 G.M. AEROTRAIN 2, L.W.T.12, B-1 engine, when they were parked together in front of the McCormick Train Pavillion. This was a classical view of the 1950s style of the diesels, and the NRRM also had the EMD F7 A-B-A Set of Streamliners, but that was sold off to another nearby railroad, but as far as it is to know, these 3 cab units, have just been sitting outside for the past 13 Years from 2007 to now in October, 2021. Hopefully, these 3 F7 units will be restored to run excursions here in Wisconsin, and the U.P.OF MI., Plus Minnesota, and Illinois. Because they can be repainted to represent the various Wisconsin tracks of the CNW., and CBQ., and MILW., and SOO LINE. GREAT!!!!!
Very nice touch for the memoriam of Dave O.! Thank you Virtual Railfan!!!
15:13 Great to see a couple clean cabooses that aren't trashed with graffiti.
Yes, this was a good ''grab bag''. As always, I love to see dropped signals like the one Galesburg, Ill @ 2:45. Thank you.
This is the best grab bag I've seen. Dave's rainbow gave me chills.
Love the rainbow finish for DaveO. Well done, bagger!
This channel helps me remain sane .TKS
Same here!
Locomotive should be E.J Lavino Co. #34 (BLW no. 57092, built 1923, née Utah Copper 5, Nevada Consolidated Copper 34, later Nevada Copper 85, transferred to Roanoke NRHS 1970.)
I know it was used around Lavino’s Lynchburg Va furnace for a while
Yes, that is it!
She belongs to the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke, and had been in storage at the Roanoke Industrial Center. (You can see her on Google map’s satellite image). I wasn’t able to find any press releases about her move, etc.
EMD only manufactured 59 BL2 type locomotives, so those two shown at 22:13 are slightly more than 1/30 of all manufactured BL2s (and 2/7 of the ones preserved). The two in the grab bag would have been used for freight back when they were new engines, because they lack the exhaust stack for a steam generator that the passenger type had to heat passenger cars. Both are being leased to the Hoosier Valley RR Museum.
6:40 for times when the power of a locomotive just isn’t enough! Great add for generators 👍🏻
That was a great tribute to Dave O.
Wow! Close call in La Grange Kentucky! I would never back up with a train approaching right behind me especially in the middle of the streets in downtown La Grange.
...had to repark and change his undergarmet...
3:56 and 15:53 Idk what is going on with HLCX, but thats the 3rd train in Kearney with those engines in the past 3 days. And they are all brand new
likely they're being deployed to a customer for service..
Allow me to put a plug in for some friends of mine.
In the Ashland VA shots you can see a storefront that says "Trains and Toys." That's "Tiny Tims Trains and Toys," just five minutes off I-95 in Ashland it's one of the best train shops on the East Coast. If you're traveling on I-95 take some time and stop in, you'll have fun!
That was a very nice tribute to Dave at the very end.
I loved the triple train meet in Fairport! Oh, if I was only there to capture it!
I can't get enough of the steam engines and Amtrak engines saying "Hello" to each other in Leaman Place - so cute!
The heading on this Grab bag. "Oh my my"; made me think of past. Tom Petty N the heart. breakers. All.great from loram to music it is all fine toned!!!
I love the 50th anniversary Amtrak locomotive
RIP Dave O. Prayers to your family.
16:50
That’s what I call, a trainbow
LOL stole my joke. We have alike minds
My wife watched this whole video with me and said this is the best grab bag she's seen so far it had a lot of firsts for her. I've made a rail fan fan out of her.
Watching Amtrak 4 do that reverse into Barstow live on the cam was a treat.
I can finally say I've seen the Golden Swoosh. Very hard to catch as I understand there's only one.
For a rail fan that doesn't live near any tracks, this pretty cool! Subscribed!!!
It looks like there setting out bundles
of "Sleepers " to hold ballast !!
Nice tribute at end..
That tank engine is a USATC S100 class, built for Europe during WWII. Many stayed in the UK and were acquired by the Southern Railway, reclassifying them as the SR USA Class, with some displacing the LBSCR E2 tank engines (the class Thomas the Tank Engine was based on) at Southampton Docks before they themselves were displaced by the Class 07 diesels. Many came back to the US and had careers on industrial lines. One American example of this class, Granite Rock #10, is operable at the California State Railroad Museum.
Thank you. I have no knowledge of anything when it comes to trains.
Actually, it isn't. The S100s had far larger driving wheels as far as I'm aware. This is E.J.Lavino & Co. #34.
@@swanlakelady4180 Apparently, you're not the only one!
Regarding the tank loco. It looks veryt much like those we had in Southampton Docks many moons ago. They were ex US Military and used in US bases in the UK. They were left over from the US Bases in the UK and strangely enough called US Dock Tanks.
May be of use.
@ 16:51 that's a weather phenomenon known as a trainbow. Far rarer than a plain old rainbow.
Very old folk tails claim that the rear end of the train and one leg of the rainbow meet with a tub of your favorite beverage if you can get to it in time.
4:15 the cool effects you get with a light next to the camera and retro reflective material in the train
The steam engine looks like the weird underground trains they used on the London Underground until electrification could take place. The extra piping accommodates for reclaiming steam and some smoke instead of blowing it into the station.
its just an american tank engine. Common Baldwin or USATC Dock switcher
The steam n Roanoke, VA has still it running since around 1920s
Boy, Helm leasing has their units on the move…
I could not get the numbers but those looked like the ones out callville wa
sd trains was there for the 50th anniversary amtrak at ashland
2:32 that was me lol had a good few hours of catching trains
17:22 I believe that is an 0-6-0 American Dock Tank. I'm unsure when they were produced but I believe it was during one of the World Wars
World War 2 to be precise
Its not everyday you see a tank engine in America. Plus if you want claggy diesels. Then search Indian ALCO's or 37906 in the UK
Some tank engines are in the US, take Strasbourg’s Thomas for example
@@spiralhillrailfan3768 never said they didn't exist. Just that you don't hear much about them unlike say 4014 etc
@@spiralhillrailfan3768 The Stasbourg Thomas is literally the worst example you could've given
@@ironmatic1 why? It’s a functional Tank Engine..
37:57 Beautiful dedication to Dave Chambers
37:01 horn vs. whistle 😂
At the 10:00 mark I don't recall seeing many U30Cs smoking as bad as that one. Let alone seeing any dash 7 with burnt paint on the long hood.
Maybe she's trying to imitate an old steamer 😄
0:27 bet that guy in that car that was backing out had to go home and change his pants 🤣🤣🤣
Great grab bag
At, 17:10, The little engine that "could" pushing those 3 big broken down diesels with ease. Best wishes to all, Tom
OK, first, one of the diesels is a slug and cannot run without its GP40 counterpart, second, the diesels are not broken down, and third, are you joking????? You know that the tank engine is non-operable, right?
Very classy tribute. Well done
RIP Dave!
Why is that car is in front of the CSX freight train way and outrun it, lol. How did that happened in La Grange, KY. thank you Virtual railfan for posting that clip. And CSX train blowed it's horn! And that car got out of the train' s path. Darn car driver
being in the way. And the Amtrak at 50. I've seen CSX pride in serice "911,1776, and 3194 twice a day now thanks.
10:31 Ok are we just not gonna talk about how there is a semi trailer in a well car? Or how it got in there and how are they going to get it out?
It’s a Gunderson all-purpose well car. These are designed to carry containers AND trailers. One end is fitted with a fifth-wheel coupling similar to the more common “spine cars” that trailers are usually found on, so trailers are likely loaded and unloaded in a very similar manner compared to when loaded on a spine car. Seems like FEC is the biggest user of them.
🇨🇦 Wow an old BC Rail engine. Nice.
Any idea if there is a plan to put the Santa Fe 2913 that is on display in Ft Madison back in running condition? What is the status and condition of that locomotive? Who owns it? Thanks
0:27 bet that guy in that car that was backing out had to go and change his pants 🤣🤣🤣
You know times are tough when Santa is work on the Railroad 🎅🎅🎅
Awesome 👏
I bet the little Baldwin 0-6-0T did all the work pulling that train.
The steam locomotive served at the Lavino Plant in nearby Lynchburg, VA.
1:31 sounds like a steam locomotive whistle.
Everyone is here to see that cute little steam switcher ;3
WOW! Great Grab Bag!
Very touching tribute at end of video. Reminded me of a friend who built his on harpsichord, then reminded himself of the transitory nature of life and beauty by putting the Latin motto on the lid, "Sic transit gloria mundi."
A CSX painted dome car is that one thing I have never seen in my entire life
Who could expect a super good grab bag like this!
0:20 *Finally looks in the rear view mirror*
*Guns it doing the Goofy Yell* "YAAAAAAAA-HOOO-Hooo-hooo-hooie......"
I laughed morre than I should've at the truck in La Grange. Also that tank engine might be a USRA locomotive.
That is the unmistakable shape of the USATC S100.
Love that K5LA at 36:07
So . . . the person in the first clip couldn't just wait to move their car? They had to do it while a train was coming?
1:55 - That black Amtrak locomotive looks pretty sharp.
16:50 - Train and rainbow. Would that be a "trainbow"?
god its erie thinking shes being pulled into a scrapyard
Been seeing a lot of elephant consisting on UP, BNSF
Remember, when backing out of a parking space, don't look back.
The driver is going to need a new pair of underwear when he heard the train horn.
And drive on the rail like there is nothing behind you
If you don’t look at them they won’t hit you …
But I read the book from the DMV and there is nothing about looking for a "train" before backing.
Too bad the auto wasn't a VW Rabbit, going from one spot of safety to another.
Good video Thanks.
2:16 Anyone know what that MARC car was doing in Ashland? I've heard of MARC bringing their cars north when other commuter trains needed extra equipment, but I'm not familiar with them moving equipment south.
Would love to hear 4 MLWs/Alcos on the point of the UP train.
17:15 steam engine working hard
37:03 I didn't know P42DCs had whistles. Maybe they just sound like whistles from the left
No theres a steam train on the left, look close
@@geremipineault308 It was joke
Threeway meet at Fairport, NY. With three tracks narrowing to two a couple miles east, you don't see that often. Must be a challenge to dispatchers.
Never play chess with a dispatcher. They plan ahead 10-12 moves in their head and can change things up on the fly.
Per Roanoke NRHS, the 0-6-0 is headed to VMT for cosmetic restoration. One of the cabooses is owned by NRHS Roanoke and has been on display at VMT, the other is owned by a chapter member. It's not clear what the plan for #41 is.
41 is also owned by the chapter it was taken out of the museum for repairs
11:55 that’s me
Neat
17:30 I see Thomas has seen better days.
:(
As much as its a tank steam locomotive with 6 wheels, Thomas doesn't really have visible pistons becuz there are only his rods nor does he even have that many safety valves. But its similar nonetheless
Why he looks in the look in that mirror you see that big train coming love your train 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂 video train are big you never drive in front of that train 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
1 am but a new video drops. Time to watch
This would seem to be the place to ask this: some rail cars have vertical yellow paint marks which divide the car into about fifths - nearly all tank cars and some gondolas and box cars. Why?
Can someone recommend a book or something I can read that will explain to me how engines are assigned? I don't understand why I see a BC Rail engine in La Plata and others all over the place. Thanx
I guess, no.
As far as I know, there is no book available for how locos are assigned. The reason you see many units of different companies together is that power is being leased by the company that needs extra, units are part of run-through shared agreements, or one company is paying back using power from another. The other alternative is that units are being transferred to new owners or as trade-ins.
Loram sure had to go a long ways for water in Skykomish.
5:16 I was at the caboose and saw that!
I hope old steamer is headed to Silvis IL to the new and will soon will the largest steam restoration shop in the world.
And I also like the K5LA at 37:02
I love your videos and videos love you love love you and your videos love you love love you and your videos love you love love you 😘
2:03 and 9:10 I thought they were the same clip. But the baggage cars had different inventory numbers.
Also, one is NB and the other SB
Diverse is good!!!!!
o-6-o is in restoration right now so wow is right
That steam engine looks oddly familiar to Rosie from Thomas and Friends and the SR USA 0-6-0 dock tank locomotives that ran across the world switching long ago. If this is one of those dock tanks, it is a rare find these days and meant to be restored to museum status.
That's because Rosie is an SR USA dock tank engine
@@florjanbrudar692 Rosie is not a SR USA dock tank engine. The side rod that connects to the outside piston to the lower side rod connecting all the drive wheels connects to it on the center wheel. The dock tank has its piston side rod connecting to the wheels closest to the cab just like the one in the video
17:25 That's E.J Lavino company 34
Nice Coverage
,🌲🌲🇮🇳🌲🌲
25:28 I believe that is mineing truck motors and chassis
steam loco built during ww2 for uk we had about 35 of them on our southhern region mostly worked at southampton docks after ww2 ps built in USA
I saw a truck that said “This is Stolen” the other day. I don’t remember if it was on the screen, a picture of in person.
2:19 Wait a minute huh
🇨🇦 I've noticed you guys don't show train spots in 🇨🇦 i've seen one or two in the last few vid's. Maybe see about getting camera spots across 🇨🇦 on CP lines and CN lines.
