- Okay so
While I love the idea of a horror game set in the abandoned servers of a long dead fps game, I feel like that 'really' wasn't explored here, like at all. Why did it have to be an online fps? Could it have been any game?
I like how the ps1 graphics are really making a comeback. However, there is a difference between 'low poly' and 'low fidelity'
The story was also just kinda confusing. I got the basic plot, but what about everything that happens after the eyeball? I don't get it.

Ngl while the concept of this is REALLY GOOD the whole “oh I made this game so I can see my wife again” just sounded so fucking cheesy. It really broke the entire creepy aspect of the game.
Yeaah I think it would've been creepier if the other player was just that, another player. Another player that is weird as hell.
@@JuliusCaesar2005 horror aspect also needs to be more subtle, rather than a figure chasing you. Things like bullet holes, footsteps, sprays, dropped guns and shooting noises would work.

The dev should have gone for the concept of an entity stuck in the game and either infecting their computer or haunting them in reality, it would have made more sense for it to take a turn on being a sort of creepy-pasta type game than whatever this was trying to be.
it's still a simple fps game. I mean, come on. why would you expect an fps game to have a plot?

one time i was playing tf2 i was in a 1000x server and it was just me and i felt like i was being watched
Similar thing happened to me, I was just walking around the map looking up at the buildings and I could swear a player was looking down at me. I saw the silhouette of Heavy from the Blu base (I was on Red) and after 10 seconds he walked away. I went to have a look but found no one. Whether someone joined the game and left right after I don’t know, but it’s still pretty creepy and still sort of gives me chills to this day.

I commented on the game's page about my own suggestions to improve this game and the dev said that they would have liked to do more with it, but the deadline for the game jam was too strict for that. That being said, I would like to see an expanded version of this game.

The tiny screen with the pencil barely making a mark on the paper, inviting the player to lean in closely had me 100% convinced I was about to get jumpscared.

You know, it could’ve been an old MMORPG that’s abandoned and glitchy. I think that’d serve the purpose well. Just a vast, empty landscape where anything can be hiding.
This is a really good horror game idea ngl.
Taking something that isn’t supposed to be scary and adding dread is an awesome way to build tension.

This is such a good concept gone down the drain. The athmosphere, graphics, etc. are spot on, however the (actual) developer of this game completely dropped the ball when they had the actual dev magically hop in the server to explain that he made a mediocre PS1 FPS to bring back his dead wife. It'd have been creepier for the entity inside the game be much less explained (rogue bot?) rather than "It's a ghost of my dead wife! OoOOoo" not to mention there was generally a lot more that could've been explored with this.
I almost want to write a book with how much there is to explore about an incredible concept like this.
Yeah, I agree. I think it’d be a lot more terrifying if instead of a spooky ghost that comes at you then disappears there were glimpses of another character running around too far too get a good look at. The entire horror is the isolation, and the idea that there’s someone, or a good imitation of a person, in here with you is a lot scarier than a sp00ky ghost. Especially since you don’t know what your own character model is like - a distant, human shaped silhouette can be deliberately misproportioned can seriously fuck with you.

I personally loved where the idea of this game was going I just feel like there could have been a little more suspense and more unsettling features that could have been added. I wish the plot was also a little bit better. But anyways great video!

Good concept, but the story is a bit meh. Personally, it could probably be a lot better if the Dev character doesn’t literally spell out the plot to you. Leaving it up to the player to shoot the music player and discovering the hidden chamber would make this so much better. Think of all the custom Garry’s Mod maps with hidden secrets that devs have left behind. Now, imagine searching for those hidden secrets and actually finding them. When I think of “abandoned servers” i don’t think “dead wife” I think about what was and what could be, the little details the devs put in that may have gone unnoticed, all the time players spent together. Just finding the secret dev room with a bunch of confessions on the walls would be way creepier than this “oh I did it to save my dead wife.”
Probably the dev discovered that her wife's soul is inside this haunted game and feared that this day might the the last one to be with her.

Played this right when it came out, while I liked the premise, the execution was really poor imo. The tension was great right up until "John" appears, and then more questions are raised than answered. If "John" is a dev, why doesn't he just kick/ban me? Why does finishing a match on this server make all the servers shut down *forever*? Why did the whole "raise the dead" plotline come completely out of left field? Why is "John" even marked as if this is a server-client based game from the 90s (all of which had no real central server for purposes other than pointing players to online servers)?
It's just such clunky delivery of a concept that muddles so many different tropes and time periods that it almost ruins the concept entirely.

@@yusupl0v Yeah, and John is the developer, so why doesn't he program it so all the servers (including the third-party ones) don't instantly shut down as soon as a match finishes on one of those servers? Why doesn't he just launch the server again? At some point, the server would have to be stopped to update the software, so there's no reason why he couldn't just relaunch it. Does the server software delete itself and its source code on all computers it exists on somehow, when a match finishes on a server? It doesn't make any sense at all. Concede that the plot is extremely contrived because the developer didn't have the time to flesh it out properly to get it in for the game jam in time.
That said, it's still a pretty cool project, I just wish that the developer sat on the idea to allow it some more time to cook rather than rushing it out for a game jam, the whole "haunted old video game" trope requires a lot of thought to actually pull off in a non-retarded way.

The environment itself is one of those things that would have given me weeks of nightmares as a kid. The aesthetics are done phenomenally well, in my opinion... im also easily unnerved by low-poly things (childhood horror stories, lol) so this was just the perfect mix for me.
however... the story was so cheesy and lacking that it really takes so much away from it. it has so much potential other than "ghosts scary :(", and i agree that so much of the fault is spelling it out.
tip from a horror writer: the brain will personalize the individual fears of every person. leaving things to the unknown leaves each member of your audience to fill in the blanks, and their brain will go to their personal horrors.... maybe thats why low-poly minimal detail stuff sticks with us so much... we fill in the blanks.
The story was meant to be cheesy, maybe be nice to the dev instead of being a generic critic.

Isn't it odd how the game blew up suddenly? I think I remember that this game released as soon as November 15th (14 days ago from when I'm writing this comment) and I'm starting to see it everywhere. I saw the first video that popped up on my recommended and didn't think much of it afterward, but it looks like this small game is actually still kicking and some of the bigger youtubers are beginning to notice it. Is it just me, or did anyone else have a somewhat similar experience?
It sometimes feels like that but is simply TH-cam algorithm and it will now start recommending it to us from here on out because we all clicked on the video.

It was the server code to get access to the next part of the game
The eyeball thing is a map of a keyboard to the buttons you need to press in an order for another secret after you press enter being the last key on that map
