It is for me too, I thought that was just sort of a unique fear I had. Whenever playing games offline, I always worry I'll stumble across things I haven't seen in the game before and things would just get worse from there until the game turned into a hellish version of what it once was.

Definitely. I think one of the scariest parts of horror games is how utterly helpless you are against the monsters, so having a weapon can be comforting. Having that weapon taken away the moment you needed it most was terrifying.

Huge disagree. The game already contextualizes that the gun does SOMETHING, since you can shoot the record player and destroy it, but taking away the gun just tells you "you're not supposed to defend yourself." Horror comes from the unknown, it would have been much more effective if the shots simply did nothing to the entity, and you could move at full speed. The game is a good project and the first little bit was great, but as soon as the ghost entered the server all the tension disappeared.
Gives off that sad, but addicting abandoned feel, but with something we can relate to more.

I felt like this trying to play Halo three back when the servers started to die. I would spend hours in forge whenever I couldnt get into a game simply because I was scared about losing the good times. A lot of nights it felt like something like this might happen. So seeing this video terrifies me.

Being alone in a dead server is eerie enough it didn’t need the dead wife explanation. A server can be haunted by nostalgia, the memories of people who once played the game, isolation, time passing by and u all alone contemplating what this old game meant to you and how everyone’s over it and moving to the next new thing, loneliness.
So many things a dead server can represent. But the wife thing was really lame and left no space to wonder about the story.

Very well written... It's gives such a haunting feeling. I remember i opened Team Fortress (the first game!) and just walked around in a map. It felt very, very strange. It's like a time travel, but all the guys are gone. Time took them, but left the memories behind
I think that's a pretty fair critique. It felt kind of cliche to me, although I haven't played those kind of games myself all too often, I can already imagine the opportunities this game had to pull the heart strings of others who had played them in the past.

The map feel so empty there nobody expect one player and the wind sound make it creepy
the whole premise resembles actual horror stories about how people would occasionally see 'ghosts' of players when playing alone on multiplayer maps in games like halo 3 and such. Whether or not they were true is really beside the point though, as like this game, the idea is really intriguing.
see, if companys hired gamers and other types of people (ex. introverts) for ideas for games...i think shit would be really good for some games
I remember coming back to that one game I love, or trying to find a server for a game that's somewhat unpopular, starting an empty one, and waiting for players to join, and that sheer, unadulterated calmness and quite from the usual mayhem is both enlightening and unsettling, and it makes the world feel dead without the players or bots to populate it, these games exploit that unsettling atmosphere.
The sad part is how these ideas don't get too much attention
“John-dev” ruined it. Good creepypasta is mysterious. If the author explains too much, the effect is ruined. Let the reader’s imagination do the heavy lifting.

Being that kid who walked around the Halo Reach maps solo, this was...pinpoint accurate on how it felt being so alone in them.
It's surreal watching it, as all the events that took place were identical to what little me was thinking was going to happen to me as I walked the maps.

Try Halo 3 when the “ghost” glitch happened. Those phantom players were a bitch to deal with when in forge because they would either stalk you or attack you.

It was a neat concept but I think the "it can bring back my dead wife" thing kind of ruined it. Went from being a creepy, depressing recreation of a dead game to just being a creepypasta.

I remember playing rainbow six vegas 2 and playing in an empty server to mess around. Though the map did have actual ghost as Easter eggs if you were to use thermal vision.
That was *exactly* my simultaneous fear and fascination with Halo 3. Sometimes I'd sit on the map Foundry hiding in a corner of the map and kind of convince myself that there was a ghost somewhere in the maze of containers or in that corridor at the back of the map.
The feeling of seeing a level that you've previously experienced with 15 other people and chatting over, sitting on it alone and noticing background audio, is really something else.

@@inphanta Yeah, I just wish there was more of an implication towards that. The dev is talking about chat permissions and explaining the situation very rationally, like he knows just how batshit insane he sounds. Plus, everything in the server seemed to point towards the soul thing (the ghost he couldn't shoot, the record player, the way the screen started going white when the player delivered the flag) if it was all made by the dev, he would know it's not real because he sat down and wrote the code; there's not really anything beyond the devil's control before the player shows up.
Awesome concept, hideous and over-explaining story.
Please just drop the story. This game would be so much more atmospheric without it.

Exactly. Honestly if you're going to make a creepy game about old abandoned servers, I'd go with just having people start appearing, but no messages that anyone's logging on. Or the reverse, have names log on, but you don't see any of them. Things just change around the map without you seeing it.
Imagine you're just on the other side of the map and you just saw "Ally flag taken", but nobody logged in. That would be creepy as shit.
@@bugjams non-euclidean maps = mindfuck. These are more convincing in PS1 graphics as in high-res ones. Fake loading screens on top to simulate a map-rotation, but it's not. However, I would get rid of this bad VHS vfx with the constant tearing first. This drives me insane and adds nothing except headaches. I'd even have the flag wander around, when shot at it splatters with a scream and "returns" to base. Maybe have some "thing" go for a b-line, just to vanish... add a few subtle glitches here and there, not too invasive, but with increasing intensity as the story progresses. Even have the ESC-button be disabled or keybindings fk'd up. For the story, it could be some code someone found on a old disk cliche. not going into the occult too far - more into the direction of System Shock, some sentient thing. learning, lurking, listening. it watches you play, it repeats your actions. You are your own enemy and you won't even know it's there.

@@Sypaka Those are some interesting ideas, I like it. I think to add on a bit I have an idea, or two to add.
What if the map were to change? Like you're moving normally and you reach a dead-end, you turn around and go back to find that the path is different from before. Kinda like a changing maze that switches between a few sets when you get to certain points? Although this would probably be difficult to program without the game pausing to load.
Other things that they could do is set certain sounds to go off randomly. Like you could be wandering around and suddenly hear gunshots in the distance (or nearby) without anyone around.
i actually never play in empty servers because this has always been a weird fear of mine
thankfully I can assure you that: No dead wife revival schemes are happening in these servers, no random strange player will show up and be completely unfindable (unless it's in TF2 with spy using the cloak and dagger invisibility watch), no strange occurances that are abnormal, not haunted by a dead person, the dev won't kick you for winning a 1v0 capture the flag game.

I've played a lot tactical fps so in some of those games, if you reload you loose a mag full of ammo. Good example would be insurgency.

Honestly this is a really bad map design for a multiplayer server since it only has one path to the objective and all the other paths lead to dead ends
The theme is capture the flag, Unreal for example had tons like for that mode

@@DefconLives If game has respawn, that'll lead to players stuck in the center of the map, killing each other, unable to move forward.
The point is not to make an accurate ctf map...But to have a bit of a feel like one.
CTF-Face, CTF-Lavagiant and I think it was CTF-High? the two sky scrapers. were all like this in the first unreal tournament it's pretty common for old arena shooters in CTF honestly.
I think this game is about autophobia/fear of being alone.

it's amazing that someone made a game of the feelings I got when exploring multiplayer maps alone
I use to this a lot in Cod modern warfare 1,2&3 and it has one of the most unnerving feelings to explore well detailed abandoned buildings with no people insight and feeling as if you are being watched from outside the map

I used to play CS:S with bots but sometimes they wouldn't spawn and it was just me alone and weird sounds would randomly pop up

Right?!! It was halo 2 and 3, as well as Cod 4 for me. There was something deeply unnerving about being alone on those maps. It felt like there should be something, somebody, and you started to get nervous at every sound. I don’t think the legends of the Halo ghost helped...
I swear the archives level in Goldeneye multiplayer is haunted...
I still shat myself from that approaching ghost. The way he couldn't shoot him was like being in a nightmare.

Titanfall 2 is actually less populated on PC, though starting a private match would obviously be empty hence it being a private match. And PvP just wouldn't start a match in the first place if there weren't enough players. I'm not quite sure what you're talking about.

3:09 that bit is perfect, then after with the contrived ‘ghost wife’, and the cringe developer is just god awful. Should have just been ‘new players joins the game’ and other bits like ‘the flag has been taken’ but you never see the enemy, but you can hear gun shots.

That was the point when it got stupid. In something like Petscop, the implied premise is that supernatural entities are influencing the game in subtle ways, not that the game itself raises the dead. This seemed ok until the dev started 'explaining' it.

@@feslerae Sure, but rule one is you need to withold information. If you have a perfect understanding of what's going on, it won't scare you. Taking the dev out completely would improve this. You don't need to explain why the game is haunted. Maybe hint at it if you know how to do that well.

@@bryanjacobs1423 It was very cheesy and out of the blue. The pacing of the video up til that point was "subtle scary things happen more and more the further he progresses" then the pacing was thrown out the window when the developer says "It can raise the dead." I could understand maybe a ritual or pseudoscience to raise the dead, but software? Also, someone who's been working on it for 11 years, why give online public access if it breaks the resurrection, instead of just keeping it LaN?
If his program needed public access for some reason, then why not spend an hour programming a command to kick people from the server? That's just my take on it.
@@bryanjacobs1423 oh one more thing that bugged me was the developer complained about the player shooting the record player and breaking it.... why would the developer code the record player to break then...
I was actually hoping that there would be a twist that there was no "dev" at all, but the black figure was playing a head game to make the player lose.
