Man, it didn't occur to me that something as simple as limiting the player's FOV can make Pacman scary. The ghosts could jump out at you from behind any corner.
This whole game is perfectly unnerving. The music being nonexistent, just the noises of PAC-Man moving, the maze cubes distorting, when you die just being touched by the ghosts and returning to the start, Blindy and Screamy’s faces, the subtle idea that the ghosts are souls trapped in the game, or that the game is soul-consuming, it’s never too obvious, it’s never too visceral, it’s just...off...and scary.

I think that this game is probably the best example of .exe-type game. It's "glitched" in just the right proportion - no hyprerelistick blod!!!!, no "dead children spirits", only glitched sprites and music, something that looks like it COULD happen to a game and that's what makes it scary - realism. Also, the dead silence instead of some cheap jumpscares or Pac-Man exploding into bloody bits is a lot more scarier, however surprising it sounds for all young horror game developers. The FOV concept isn't new, but fits the game perfectly with it's one-wide corridors and enemies popping in and out. The enemies are fine and pretty creepy too, especially the red-train-of-spook-one, even though Slendy is a little bit too intrusive, IMO. Overall, that's what horror game makers, especially "haunted software"-like, should strive for - simple, but refined, realistic, but not hyper-realistic, thought-out and not "i want all the scary shit in my game and also it should have real life murder lore". Lockheed honestly i think the jumpscare was pretty good. its not overused/overdone so you dont expect it and the game’s setting and atmosphere fits it well. this is a jumpscare done right
I admire this game for being unlike most "haunted" ROMs, and not relying on screamers or creepy image flashes to scare the player. It throws you right into this unsettling experience, and lets the anxiety come naturally. It doesn't try to force it, and because it's an actual game and not the product of some edgy 13-year-old's emo phase, it's easy to get immersed in this experience. I like the "something's not quite right" approach to horror as opposed to the "OOH LOOK AT ME I'M SO SPOOKY AAAAAAAAHHHH THAT'S A SPOOKY SCREAM SOMETHING SOMETHING JUMPSCARE!!" approach. It feels less juvenile, and actually makes for great horror due to its closeness to real life. If something's messed up, no matter how bad it is, it never immediately jumps out at you. You have to search and uncover the horror yourself, and, even then, the answers aren't always easily found. That's why these other "haunted" ROMs fail. They throw so much "spooky" shit at you, that you become numb to it, and end up not being as immersed as you need to be. All you're doing is waiting for the damn thing to end so you can get on with your day. So, to conclude this lengthy comment, kudos to the game dev!! If I could hug you for making an actually decent haunted game for once, I would.
The way that the map deteriorates as you progress is extremely cool. It leaves you to wander aimlessly and follow the lit paths in front of you ehile you're constantly on edge.
Think some parts might be easier because in the original game, the ghosts would chase you around the map(well except the orange one who would go around randomly)

Slendy: Behavior is similar to Slender Man, randomly appears in front of Pac-Man, turn away from it to survive, will not appear when using power pellet. Old One: Will slowly follow Pac-Man through the map, ignores walls and cannot appear when power pellet is used. ???????: The map begins to disappear making it harder to find the pellets. RUN: Shadow version of Pac-Man, follows exact movements and gets faster, eventually reaching Pac-Man. Causes player to go into a first-person version where the game finally ends when it catches Pac-Man.
Actually, ??????? can kill Pac-Man if he approaches the spot he flashed into view for a few seconds. You can see him at 7:43 , and he's green too. You also see what happens to Pac-Man when he gets killed by it at 7:51

Realistic blood, scary images and jumpscares aren't 'true' horror, just a cheap way to trigger a natural reflex. REAL horror games can make you feel something is wrong, and unsettled, not just 'ah loud noise'
Wow, thats.. a very creative concept. The concept of not being able to see anything is actually pretty creative. The ghost concepts are also pretty cool. Then heres the slendy part. I like how it becomes quiet, no sound, just quiet. The ending was very interesting, and confusing. Who is shadow pacman? Why were you sent into the 3d maze? Did you become Blindy, since you cant see anything?

With the white ghost and the fact that you cannot see everything else besides your lane makes it really hard. Also that orange ghost tho, standing around like no one's business

Dark Pac-Man copies your movements except that he gets faster, and in the last part what kills you is a yellow pacman so maybe what happens is you become dark Pac man and instead of yellow Pac-Man killing you it's actually you killing him.
Alejandro Gomez or that getting caught by Shadow Pac-Man turns you into a ghost inside the game, and the Pac-Man that the player killed at the end is another victim to a vicious cycle
I think shadow pacman is like a delayed response by a couple of seconds of where the player had already went Altho idk why shadow pacman started going saNIC FAST after yellow pacman got the special red dot thingy from the corner
To beat the level you have to leave the power pellets for last. Shadow Pacman doesn't get faster over time, he gets a big jump when you get a pellet and that jump stays. So while he's slow, build a lead, then go grab the pellets last.
Old Man (Pink) was easily my least favorite. It just creeps around the maze, going through walls, and you never know it's coming until it's basically too late.
To anyone afraid of jump scares: (spoilers) Unless you count the red ghost's "chasing" sound these are the only ones i'd count 8:16 Blue ghost fills screen with shrill sound 9:32 Shadow Pac-Man fills the screen with glitchy effects and could probably be considered a jump scare 9:49 the player getting "eaten" in the FPS section probably counts my thoughts: credit to the dev for actually making unique mechanics instead of just "IS SCARY, FLASHING SCARY IMAGES AND SHRILL NOISES" kinda curious if it's possible to beat the Shadow Pac-Man level, probably not but worth thinking about

The ghosts? At first, yes. Then I became a bit scarred by that squid with the ability to go through walls. Then I saw the iron Pac-Man and I jumped. Now that I saw what happened when he ate the power pellet, I think I need to call the asylum down the road here to book a dagumm room.
Whoever designed this game clearly has a VERY clear understanding of what makes something truly unnerving, even if it’s not all in your face. Everything down to the visuals, audio, and gameplay mechanics are genuinely freaky as hell and this guy or girl deserves insane amounts of praise
My interpretation of the end. Shadow Pac-Man is the game’s way of bringing new souls into the game. When shadow Pac-Man is chasing you, the points and lives on the left of the screen say RUN. Could this be the spirits communicating to the player to prevent you from having the same fate as them? When you get caught, the game glitches out and ghost sprites appear. I have always seen these (in this game) the lost souls showing themselves before your soul gets taken. Your soul then gets transferred into the game. And now you are a ghost, playing a game of infinite Pac-Man for all of eternity... Props to the game dev for making this game.
ChefUTG3 Shadow Pac-Man’s A.I only chases you after a certain amount of time has passed (he didn’t chase the player when he picked up the first big pellet) I’m guessing that lvl6 is unbeatable as Shadow Pac-Man knows where you are at all times. Your soul is pretty much forfeit when you reach that stage.

So my clock was making noises (not ticking, more like gears rattling) and I thought it's just from this video. And it scared the hell out of me when it continued rattling even though the video ended.
I notice some stuff: The "Insert Coin" changes to "Insert Soul" The word "Score" changes to "Dread" The word "Lives" changes to "Death" The word "Level" changes to "Ghost" The Score Number changes to "66666" The Level Number indicates how many Ghosts are in the Level The Level Number change to "Blindy", "Screamy", "Slendy", "Old one", "???????", "Run"
There are never more than four ghosts, just like in normal Pac-Man. So the numbers really are still just the level numbers. But the first four levels tell you the names of the ghosts that are introduced in those levels.
Blindy seems to act like a normal pacman ghost, just a bit more visually creepy. Screamy seems to stay in one place for 2 ish seconds? than move for around 2 seconds. Slendy seems to blink around sorta randomly. The Old One seems to just chase you, ignoring walls. Huh.
All the original ghosts behaved differently, with the red one actively following you, the blue one trying to avoid you, the pink one going in loops, trying to catch you off guard, with the orange one just wandering around. Here, Blindy wanders around blindly (hence the name). Screamy charges at you screaming (if he sees you). Slendy teleports in front of you. And The Old One does exactly as you said it does.
Shadow Pac-Man copies your moves, but very fast. I guess he’s just dragging out the player’s death, but perhaps if you go fast enough and smart enough you can win?

I agree with UghZan11's comment, this is the best example of a .exe-type game. Just as he says, it's glitched in the right proportion and in a way that seems like it could actually happen to the game. This ROM hack is very clever, this deserves more attention.

There are several 1st person Pac-Man games. The first one I've ever played is simply called FPS-Man. There's also one Markiplier played that I can't remember the name of, it's in one of his "3 scary games" videos. Then there's that Dark Deception everyone is talking about, but it isn't really pac-man related, just a similar type of game.

I love how subtle this game is. Most exe games are quite loud and "in your face", like the false jumpscares in a modern horror films. This game let's your anticipation and anxiety do the work, using it's quiet off-putting tone and constantly shifting/vanishing graphics.
Honestly, I found orange’s sudden silence mechanic to be oddly relaxing. The immediate thing that reminded me of this is when rain starts to fall especially hard for a second and kind of drowns out everything else.
It is a very cool creepypasta game yeah, and one of the few .exe games that is actually a game and not a glorified bad cinematic with 'gameplay' elements

I remember reading the “hey this game exists” post on tumblr from the creator! I was never gonna play the game because I don’t handle playing spooky games well, but I’m super glad I got to see what this game was about!!
What I love about this game is that it's your typical "haunted by a ghost" game, but it's not in your face (Except for that last bit, lol). It doesn't have text telling how children have died, or displays large amounts of gore. It creates horror with clever mechanics and atmosphere. It shows and makes the player feel the fear, it doesn't tell you why you should be scared. You feel the claustrophobia, the fear of being lost and that your death might be lurking at the turn of the corner. You crave for one large pill to ease the anxiety allowing you to know what's around you, feel safe for a bit just to turn off the lights a few moments later. Then in the end, you get caught by shadow Pacman, the game glitches and now you're a trapped soul in the game, you're more confused and disoriented than before, but because of the change of perspective the game now feels kinda more natural, because we it's a first perspective view we get all the information possible we could get from this point of view, in contrast to the bird eye view which should give us the most but is highly obscure, causing that feeling of unease. In the end we see what we need to see, we're now part of the game trapped to repeat the cycle for the rest of eternity. It's as much of a typical ghost story as every other game, but one that's masterfully done.
I like this kind of horror, it doesnt necesarily bring something on the lines of abstract surrealism but right on the lines of taking something familiar and well known and making act odd and out of place which adds to the sense of dread and anxiety. The semi distorted pacman theme in the start set the tone for the entire game and that anxiety never left or faded unless you really look deep into it and see the seams of the horror behind it which until that point loses the anxiety and dread aspect since you know what is going on already. Rather creative and it sort of similar to how Sonic.exe was when people started knowing about it back then though IMO the dread and discomfort of the atmosphere Sonic.exe had was short lived as it went too over the top too fast which instead made it more silly once you played it long enough. This though is a lot more creative and a lot more subtle which i like very much. The way the whole game screen curves as if its playing on a CRT monitor of the original pacman arcade cabinet is a nice touch
Probably one of the best indie horror games I've seen on this channel. Nothing explicit, nothing feels cheap and lazy. Simple, but solid scare tactics that work to turn a fun time waster into something legit spooky.
I feel like this version is much harder than the normal because of these 3: 1. Limited Field of Vision 2. New A.l 3. Sound that would scare normal gamers

This ROM has a few auditory and visual jumpscares here and there, tho. The trick is to not overuse them.

Can you imagine making your own arcade cabinet with this game? Damn you could prank your friends with a cursed arcade cabinet.
Blindy: Aimlessly wanders around the maze, hoping it runs into Pac-Man by random luck. Screamy: Also wanders around but will rush towards Pac-Man once he’s in sight, occasionally glitches into ’normal’ sprite. Slendy: Behavior is similar to Slender Man, randomly appears in front of Pac-Man, turn away from it to survive, will not appear when using power pellet. Old One: Will slowly follow Pac-Man through the map, ignores walls and cannot appear when power pellet is used. ???????: The map begins to disappear making it harder to find the pellets. RUN: Shadow version of Pac-Man, follows exact movements and gets faster, eventually reaching Pac-Man. Causes player to go into a first-person version where the game finally ends when it catches Pac-Man.
My favourite is blindy because Blindy just walks around aimlessly which makes him unpredictable

To beat the level you have to leave the power pellets for last. Shadow Pacman doesn't get faster over time, he gets a big jump when you get a pellet and that jump stays. So while he's slow, build a lead, then go grab the pellets last.

My interpretation of the end.
Shadow Pac-Man is the game’s way of bringing new souls into the game. When shadow Pac-Man is chasing you, the points and lives on the left of the screen say RUN. Could this be the spirits communicating to the player to prevent you from having the same fate as them? When you get caught, the game glitches out and ghost sprites appear. I have always seen these (in this game) the lost souls showing themselves before your soul gets taken. Your soul then gets transferred into the game. And now you are a ghost, playing a game of infinite Pac-Man for all of eternity...
Props to the game dev for making this game.

ChefUTG3 Shadow Pac-Man’s A.I only chases you after a certain amount of time has passed (he didn’t chase the player when he picked up the first big pellet) I’m guessing that lvl6 is unbeatable as Shadow Pac-Man knows where you are at all times. Your soul is pretty much forfeit when you reach that stage.

The Level Number indicates how many Ghosts are in the Level
The Level Number change to "Blindy", "Screamy", "Slendy", "Old one", "???????", "Run"
There are never more than four ghosts, just like in normal Pac-Man. So the numbers really are still just the level numbers. But the first four levels tell you the names of the ghosts that are introduced in those levels.
You missed that Slendy has a random chance to appear a yellowy-gold colour.

All the original ghosts behaved differently, with the red one actively following you, the blue one trying to avoid you, the pink one going in loops, trying to catch you off guard, with the orange one just wandering around.
Here, Blindy wanders around blindly (hence the name).
Screamy charges at you screaming (if he sees you).
Slendy teleports in front of you.
And The Old One does exactly as you said it does.
Shadow Pac-Man copies your moves, but very fast. I guess he’s just dragging out the player’s death, but perhaps if you go fast enough and smart enough you can win?

There's also one Markiplier played that I can't remember the name of, it's in one of his "3 scary games" videos. I think it's more of a cycle - you die, then you become Shadow Pac-Man, and in order to liberate yourself, you have to kill the next Pac-Man

I love how subtle this game is. Most exe games are quite loud and "in your face", like the false jumpscares in a modern horror films. This game let's your anticipation and anxiety do the work, using it's quiet off-putting tone and constantly shifting/vanishing graphics.

Honestly, I found orange’s sudden silence mechanic to be oddly relaxing. The immediate thing that reminded me of this is when rain starts to fall especially hard for a second and kind of drowns out everything else.

If you look carefully stuff like Score and Lives are replaced by the word "Ghost"
edit: Level "4" sometimes replaces 4 with Old One. Level 5 replaces Lives with "Death".

I remember reading the “hey this game exists” post on tumblr from the creator! I was never gonna play the game because I don’t handle playing spooky games well, but I’m super glad I got to see what this game was about!!

What I love about this game is that it's your typical "haunted by a ghost" game, but it's not in your face (Except for that last bit, lol). It doesn't have text telling how children have died, or displays large amounts of gore. It creates horror with clever mechanics and atmosphere. It shows and makes the player feel the fear, it doesn't tell you why you should be scared. You feel the claustrophobia, the fear of being lost and that your death might be lurking at the turn of the corner. You crave for one large pill to ease the anxiety allowing you to know what's around you, feel safe for a bit just to turn off the lights a few moments later.
Then in the end, you get caught by shadow Pacman, the game glitches and now you're a trapped soul in the game, you're more confused and disoriented than before, but because of the change of perspective the game now feels kinda more natural, because we it's a first perspective view we get all the information possible we could get from this point of view, in contrast to the bird eye view which should give us the most but is highly obscure, causing that feeling of unease.
In the end we see what we need to see, we're now part of the game trapped to repeat the cycle for the rest of eternity. It's as much of a typical ghost story as every other game, but one that's masterfully done.
The only One Than dont call This game "Pac-Man.exe"

I like this kind of horror, it doesnt necesarily bring something on the lines of abstract surrealism but right on the lines of taking something familiar and well known and making act odd and out of place which adds to the sense of dread and anxiety. The semi distorted pacman theme in the start set the tone for the entire game and that anxiety never left or faded unless you really look deep into it and see the seams of the horror behind it which until that point loses the anxiety and dread aspect since you know what is going on already. Rather creative and it sort of similar to how Sonic.exe was when people started knowing about it back then though IMO the dread and discomfort of the atmosphere Sonic.exe had was short lived as it went too over the top too fast which instead made it more silly once you played it long enough. This though is a lot more creative and a lot more subtle which i like very much. The way the whole game screen curves as if its playing on a CRT monitor of the original pacman arcade cabinet is a nice touch

Probably one of the best indie horror games I've seen on this channel. Nothing explicit, nothing feels cheap and lazy. Simple, but solid scare tactics that work to turn a fun time waster into something legit spooky.
