- How realistic is the CIRRUS VISION JET flying an ILS approach in XPlane 11? I fly from Moorabbin to Avalon Airport using the X1000 (Garmin G1000) to fly the localiser and glideslope into Avalon's ILS. Can you learn Instrument flying using a Flight Sim? How realistic is the Cirrus SF50 in XPlane?

9:00 on the GFC700 autopilot (in the G1000) clicking NAV only arms lateral navigation (in this case LOC)... you'll need to click the APR button on the autopilot to arm the glideslope capture. The habit pattern I use is... once I hear "cleared for the approach" from ATC I then click the APR button which arms both lateral and vertical capture. The two armed states (LOC and GS) will appear as white in the upper line of the PFD... and turn to green once each is captured.
You should check out Vatsim for Atc. Always love watching your vids!

Nice to read comments from real pilots on how real the flight sim is to operate, and not have to be gobsmacked by the scenery.
Even just simming, your vids are interesting & fun. I picked up a few tips as well like ILS interception & keeping the missed approach altitude dialled in & handy. 👍🏼👍🏼

There are a couple of things that you could do to make your experience a lot better 1) Go to settings> graphics and set your field of view a little higher so that you can see both the MFD and the PFD.
2. You could also download the updated SF50 which gives you autothrottle and a way more detailed experience
You can create your flightplan in simbrief and then load it from the catalog in the G1000.
That is a lot better than with the mouse.
If anyone is curious. A good bet for a joystick with a bit nicer feel and more travel with the proper Hall effect sensors. A T16000M will only set you back a tad more. Comes with a full throttle quadrant and a fantastic stick. The stick only one has a small throttle too. It's a lot newer than this one. Its great to see you using a stick though!!
With the knobs in X-Plane, if you put your mouse over them, instead of clicking, you can use the scroll wheel to move them, works much easier (:
Hi Stefan, try the Cirrus Vision SF50 G2 available (FOC) on X Plane. Seems to be more realistic flap operation and comes with Auto Throttle as well. Great Video!

Steph, yesterday I took IXB and did the RNAV 21 into YLTV and the 26 ILS back into YMEN. With severe clear and nil wind it was so smooth it felt just like flying the sim. I should have asked Mel approach to turn up the background Jazz while I was monitoring the coupled approach on my G1000 perspective.

GA flying is now allowed in the UK but for solo flying only. Problem is I bought a share in a Condor just before lockdown and I still have to be checked out by an instructor. However, X-Plane really helps with the mental side of flying and VatSim helps with the radio.
8:00 Stef, the G1000 has already interrogated the Morse Code for the ILS and the green "IAV" next to the frequency at the top left of the PFD came from that interrogation. Your audible verification is a nice but unnecessary redundancy. (I fly IRL a DA40/G1000)
Funny you should say this, arm chair pilot here was flying Xplane 11 Vision Jet last night. Now I still have to figure out how to trim, but felt like the jet kept wanting to head for obit, almost broke my new $400 Joystick pushing so hard forward. No matter what I did. Then when I want to land I was basically hovering at 75 knots & was bearly loosing altitude. Had to put the bloody thing in stunt mode a do a series of spiral dive bombs to loose height. I'm sure if I did anything remotely like this in the real thing, either I or the plane would be permanently retired.
I have the same system but I have started using Sidecar to undock the G-1000 and put it on the iPad so I can have a nearly unobstucted forward view in the Cirrus. Its pretty cool.
ATC is always fun. As a temporary quarantine channel change you could do your own version of 'Airforceproud95's ATC videos on X-plane with a Stefan twist. Jump up in the tower and show the Air Services guys and girls that those visits were not wasted. Full of Aussie pilots, that could be quite funny.
The Vision Jet that FlightFX just released for MSFS 2020 is superb!! You should try that one.
Hey, great video! So I bought the same SR-22 you have (Carenado) and I just wanted to let you know that a much better one is coming out very soon, I think it should come out either in may or june. But I think it would be a great idea to test that one out, its called the SR-22 by torquesim, its probably going to be the most realistic SR-22 in x plane history :) Have a great day!

Not sure how the xplane 1000 responds, but from the steam gauge cessna auto pilot in the game I know there's a little area in between the nav and approach button, that if you click it, it activates both.
Also, I can really recommend navigraph to bring the in game nav aids in line with the real world as much as possible. Still noticing some issues with it, mostly missing dme on localiser frequencies on one particular airport where you have to do a dme arc on the localiser frequency. GPS distance works as a rough stand in though.
You should download Airport Enviroment. It changes how taxiways look and also runways and much more! Its very easy and it looks absolutely fantastic!
Stef, to have a better field of view of the cockpit, I (and many other X-Plane simmers) recommend to increase the FOV (field of view) to a recommended 75 degrees instead of the default 60 degrees, from my experience on a smaller screen (as I have a laptop) I would recommend 90 degrees FOV. Any questions, just ask 🙂

Thanks Stefan I’d like to see an Aircrane on the deck in its old spot at Moorabbin, I’ve spent a few summers there with the Aircrane as their Refueller.
I’d like to see a flight down the Kilmore Gap in marginal VFR, scud running conditions OCTA and fly the 26 ILS into Essendon, something to do in the sim, just a thought.

You could arm approach mode to intersept localiser and to arm the glide, then you can have one more drink on the way ;)
The Localizer DME West approach to Innsbruck Airport (LOWI) Austria in IMC is arguably one of the most challenging instrument approaches in the world. It is in fsx missions, not sure about xplanes though. You could always do it for real on your round the world trip.

hey mate, if you want to have a better flying experience in x plane, go into settings and set the POV to wider so you can see all around you and your instruments instead of having to change the camera. i had this same problem but now its so much better, i recommend you try it out and see what you like
Loving the flight sim content Stefan. You could give SmartCopilot a look at and do a shared cockpit cross-over with Niko.
The greatest way to plan is to make a superb plan in the hypergenius Little Navmap, then export it to X-Plane. :) You can open the plan in the SF-50 and there you go. :)
Also should install lua so you can run lua scripts like a plugin which rates your landing rate etc

Hey Stefan, interesting vid as always. Have you seen the new freeware Hold My Beer Cirrus SR22T G6 for xplane? It's fantastic quality, one of the best add ons for Xp11. Hope you can try it out and make a video of it
If you get the Carenado SR22 for X-Plane, could you at some stage do identical flights in the sim and the real EYZ to see how it compares for realism? And I do recommend flying on VATSIM for added immersion.
I downloaded the Caremark SR22, that was the broken one I showed at the start of this video. I’m looking forward to trying the TorqueSim SR22, that one looks very good.

Hey Stef, I think I know why you weren't getting any instruction from ATC. Your transponder was in standby mode (and squawking VFR)!😆All they could see was primary paint. Always, always, always do a 'before takeoff checklist!' 🤣In all seriousness, another great vid mate, can't wait for you to demonstrate that for real...in a real Vision Jet!

Regarding entering in letters in the G1000, it's not as good as a keyboard, but you can hover your mouse over the knob and use the scroll wheel on the mouse to change the letter really fast. Also, is it just me or did you not really address whether the Vision Jet in X-Plane is realistic (I mean, at one point you said it was, but unless I missed it, you didn't really go into it)

For a sim vid, i’d like to see the flight planning. SID, Transition, en-route, STAR and approach.
You can change the view by changing Lateral View in the X plane settings. I put it on 85.00 Degrees because then one can see the whole cockpit.
Try Plane Commander add-in. You can prob speak the programming to the sim.
After watching the video, in the end you said about streaming, you should definitely try, I stream myself and I don't think I'd be simming today if I didn't!
You should look into the TBM900 by HotStart. It is a great simulation of the TBM and something that comes close to the "GA" aircraft in X-Plane :)
That was pretty cool seemingly as we can't fly, I think you should do more in x plane and perhaps go live.
Stef, give the KnobXP a try. Works great for me and without a touchscreen OR Air Manager!
You should try out the X-Plane 11.50 Vulkan/Metal public beta. In short, the beta uses a new graphical rendering API that is much more efficient and can output much higher framerates at higher resolutions; I bet you could turn up some settings as well!

You can make a flight plan with SimBrief, put it in the FMS Routes folder and then just import it in the FMS

Great video! It baffles me sometimes when one considers something such as flight director as “cheating,” yet Papi Lights and glide slope indicators as landing tools.

Can be done, I practice it all the time.
Right now, about half the time I can breakout at mins and land.
But I'm getting better.
Also, is there a way to fly the Hong Kong Curve (the old approach where you break out see a Red/White checkerboard and turn right) to line up on the runway?
I've heard about it and would love to fly it in XPlane...

Thanks David, yeah flown into Ballarat a few times in the past. Not for a little while though. It can get busy with flight training so be aware of other traffic, but the cross runways give you good options and the aero club there is always friendly whenever I've visited.

Every so often (without touching anything), my flaps will randomly lower. I only have them bound to one button on the throttle. Anyone else experience that? Real pain in the rear.
There is a really good quality SR-22 freeware by a company called Hold My Beer, might be worth checking it out!
