"Exile means modest manners, wisdom which remains unknown, prudence
not recognized as such by most, a hidden life, an invisible intention, unseen meditation, desire for
humiliation, longing for hardship, constant determination to love God, abundance of charity,
renunciation of vainglory, depth of silence."
Ladder of Divine Ascent. St John Climacus
    Step 3.
    John Butler.
    A hidden gem.
    Phil.
    The determined miner.
    Blessings 🙏
I dug up my copy of "thirty steps to heaven," by Vassilios Papavassiliou.
Your videos have stirred something deep and it has been a few days of listening and seeing the embodiment of the Divine Ladder...
A little, every day, as you say.
I am doing my very slow Jesus Prayer. I had been rushing it.
Your way is so much better.
When you explained about going down, into the dark, and the mantra was the handrail, it made sense.
I don't know where the Prayer is leading me, and I cannot see, so why rush and lose my footing?
Then the Divine Ladder came to mind. We need to tread carefully, feet on the ground, hand on the rail... step by step.
    🙏
    Feet on the ground.
    Hand on the rail.
    Heading towards the light.
    Always facing the light.
    Step by step.

Wow.. yes depressed all my life mostly...yet appreciating every little bit of Joy , a funny person, dog , a leaping cow today in my sights. I was in the delusional thought with others that Joy is always supposed to be and if you didn't have it , you were walking in some sin. The idea that suffering was a must to sanctify me had finally come ,yet nobody to share it with. Even still John, I find myself licking my wounds in self pity and wanting to just die and go home. Finally I get a jolt in me , pick up yourself, pull up your bootstraps child and go ye forward like a soldier. GET UP WOMAN. yes your mother and family rejected you and friends and so many but your Papa is God and He is training you , you little girl you little child grab the Father's hand and go ,go ,go..
So these wonderful mighty thoughts come and go. Sometimes I act and sometimes I do not but often I react to how horrible it all is and how I feel and how come , why and please help me Jesus. Constantly battling and then self punishment that I'm not being a good girl and the shame of the past hits my face like a cruel ice cold wind. So I wake up again and I fight to pray ,fight the thoughts of revenge or hate for the pain causers. Shouldn't I hate myself too ,for I cause my own pain too. Get up ,get up ,get up again and try to live in the moment as you John because if you're not where you're at you're NOT ANYWHERE RIGHT.... heeheehee.. yes I notice the butterfly and creativeness of what God all mighty puts in my sights and Jesus help me stay there longer than awhile and eventually day by day ,I will make it to His Heavenly world .

Saint Seraphim of Sarov (Russian: Серафим Саровский) (30 July [O.S. 19 July] 1754 (or 1759) - 14 January [O.S. 2 January] 1833), born Prokhor Moshnin (Прохор Мошнин), is one of the most renowned Russian saints and is venerated both in the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church. He is generally considered the greatest of the 19th-century startsy (elders). Seraphim extended the monastic teachings of contemplation, theoria and self-denial to the layperson. He taught that the purpose of the Christian life was to acquire the Holy Spirit. Perhaps his most popular quotation amongst Orthodox believers is "Acquire a peaceful spirit, and thousands around you will be saved."
Seraphim was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1903. Alongside his veneration in the Catholic calendar, Pope John Paul II also referred to him as a Saint.[1] -

But much of what he says could(and I'd level this critisism at many of the alleged utterances of the Hindu 'masters')be easily construed as the trivialisation of genuine human suffering

For example, you say: "I'm just dust,' Well my loved ones mean more to me than that and so do most peoples."
Do you really think that John doesn't give a damn about anyone? Of course you don't (if you've seen some of his videos). So that's obviously not what he means by 'I'm just dust,'.
You say: "I think he has a rather disparaging attitude to human endevour".
But isn't him writing books and making these videos a human endeavour? So what's happening here? Is John contradicting himself? I don't think so. I think we have to sometimes listen to his words as we would to music, or a poem. Trying to get into the deeper meaning of what he's trying to convey.
With what you say about the "trivialisation of genuine human suffering", yes, that I can totally relate to. "Two years of depression is nothing"? Really??
But again, I give him the benefit of the doubt and try to tap into the deeper meaning of what he may be trying to convey.

I disagree that all visions are just distractions and that we should never pay them any mind. Sometimes and to a degree they can be, sometimes and to a degree not, I think. For instance, I've had visions that helped me to understand other people's pain or see someone was in trouble. There are visions that give us a glimpse of God's love for us, visions that let us know if someone intends to harm us so we know to avoid them, visions that help us know if someone is going to die soon so we can advise them to prepare and make peace with their loved ones before they go, visions that help us understand others' traumas so we know how to assist them in the journey of their own healing, etc. If we have a vision, I believe it often can mean God wants us to pay attention to it and that we received it for an important reason. Of course, it's also important, like John said, to go beyond the visions to the unseen and unknown and not get stuck on them, same thing with anything in life. I also feel, due to personal experience, that darkness, death, and existence in a mortal body is not sin in themselves, but that shame and pride are the source of sin; shame and pride are 2 faces of the conditioned ego. I also draw a distinction between the conditioned ego and the inherent Ego; the inherent Ego is part of the Self, it is our default mode network, prefrontal cortex, and any part of the brain and nervous system that gives us memory and self preservation (such as knowing not to put our hands in fire, or knowing not to break our own fingers even though it would be as easy as snapping a carrot, or knowing not to climb into an enclosure with a dangerous, wild animal at the zoo), and the conditioned ego is indoctrinated into us and is a poison to our minds, hearts, even our bodies; it can result in chronic pain, strokes, heart problems, a chronic tension between the eyebrows, mental illness, and self destruction, the opposite of the inherent Ego and the Self. I think we essentially believe the same things mostly, just have different words, archetypes, and frames of reference. For example, when John speaks of darkness, he means ignorance, rather than literal darkness which is natural and complements the light.

I would say that what enhances the darkness most is ignoring it. It loves being ignored and grows from it.
We need see it directly in the eyes.
The church fathers taught extensivey on demonology.

Does anyone feel as if he is slightly wrong in some of his awnsers? For example reguarding the question: why are we here.
I would awnser it like this: life is abundance we are here to celebrate it. Note this celebration is that of a childrens view of discovering a new location where he has not yet been. To see everything as like the way a babie sees it; with amazement. To stop categorizeing things in good/evil ect green or red. To see everything with astonichment.
It is when growing up you learn to categorise and stop see the amazing in everyday life. It is when you grow up you learn what sexuality is ect.
There are other awnser i would also awnser in a slight diffrent way. But i do adore him and adore what he wants and is trying to do.

What i mean is. When a person grows up they learn how to sublimate the other sex in a sexual way with fantacies. Sex from what we see today. It is always based on the fantacies. Without the fantacy you would lose the glow.
Has it ever happend to you. While haveing sex you space out and look at urself from a theird perspective and wonder how stupid you look? This is the fantacies failing to support your fantacy.
I personaly dont know how sex work without this fantacy and i would like to see what its like. Maybe it would be a sex purly to reproduce a child or in a natural way of a animal for example cow, bird, dog.
However this fantacy is a symptom of the human conciousness. So i dont know if we can go without it.

Is it just me or has John been using more Christian language on his channel lately? Does he consider himself more exclusively believing in Christianity now, or is he still more of a blend of eastern philosophy which he sometimes describes using christian concepts? Forgive me if my question doesn't make sense

@@fabsprout5301 Hey, thanks for asking. Some of Ramana Maharshi's descriptions of his awakening experiences have been vaguely likened to descriptions and symptoms of temporal lobe epilepsy, and the ensuing occurrence of what's called "post-ictal psychosis." Definitely take this with a grain of salt, but here are some resources with much more information than I am able to provide:
      Ramana Maharshi TLE piece: wikivisually.com/wiki/User%3AJoshua_Jonathan%2FRamana_Maharshi_and_Temporal_Lobe_Epilepsy#Temporal_Lobe_Epilepsy
"Patients with postictal psychosis had a high incidence of psychic auras and nocturnal secondarily generalized seizures. The most striking feature that distinguished postictal psychosis from both acute interictal and chronic psychoses was phenomenological: the relatively frequent occurrence of grandiose delusions as well as religious delusions in the setting of markedly elevated moods and feeling of mystic fusion of the body with the universe. In addition, postictal psychosis exhibited few schizophreniform psychotic traits such as perceptual delusions or voices commenting. Reminiscence, mental diplopia, and a feeling of impending death were also fairly frequent complaints of patients with postictal psychosis. Interictal acute psychosis and chronic epileptic psychosis were psychopathologically similar. Although acute interictal and chronic epileptic psychoses could simulate schizophrenia, postictal psychosis results in a mental state quite different from that of schizophrenic psychosis."

Some people discuss Geschwind syndrome as well: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geschwind_syndrome
So point being, these mystics and saints might be right about the "grace" of their condition: that indeed, they may actually have a different neurobiology than the average person, making physiological conditions conducive to what modern, Western scientists would describe as a physical and/or psychiatric disorder or condition. This is of course just one point of view, so I'm not saying I totally agree with that, but I think it's worth considering.

@@julesdrums6167 thanks. Worth looking at. Also referring to the comment above, if atoms and electrons and photons are all there is, then I’ve no doubt that all kinds of brain states are possible, caused by a myriad of things. On the other hand, our perceptions are so narrow, that if spirituality and one-ness is real, it could also manifest a variety of brain states which might coincidentally overlap with those caused by natural causes. Who can really know? Egos and brains can’t know, certainly. My experience is that there does seem to be a level of knowing that is deeper than individual brains, that by definition cannot be described using the concepts of brains

@@julesdrums6167 Science has played an invaluable role in debunking pseudo-spiritual states and claims. So your remarks are definitely worth considering. But, as scientists, we should also be aware or our own limitations as humans, both in our perception of reality and in our intellectual ability (which are the foundations of science). Otherwise, our pseudo-scientific fundamentalism may deprive us of the quest to find a deeper meaning in life by dismissing what truly spiritual people experience, as "psychiatric disorders". True science isn't believing that reality is only what can be explained within its methods. That's just an arbitrary metaphysical belief. (By the way, I know that's not what you're saying).
