  • The first in the Quick Learner strategy guide series. Here we'll talk about Action Compression, and how it's the way to deal with the major challenge in Arkham Horror the Card Game: running out of time.

Hi, very interesting insights! I'll check your other videos in these series.

Great insight! I agree with generally all that you said. The only thing that struck me is your mention of the difficulty not impacting the actions. I think it does significantly, because you are more likely to fail and therefore waste actions, and hence action compression becomes more important. Furthermore, the important tests you want to take with a higher level and bump it up with skills: You can't always afford to take the test that high. e.g. fingerprint kit with deduction on Daisy is testing at 8, which is good for a shroud 5 location. If Daisy had neither and only 1 perception and 1 unexpected courage, she would need to bump up her skills for 3separate tests, potentially testing raw for the 3rd one. The likely outcome for failure makes action compression even more important in that instance.

Yes, good point! I'm going to have a video about difficulty in general, so I think I was a little too brief here, but the gist is that on Hard/Expert you tend to deckbuild so that you don't take as many tests. But you're right that the tests you do take are going to end up in failure slightly more often, as you can't always be up 7 or whatever on a test. I think I was directing my comment in the video more at newer players wondering if they should bump up from Easy to Standard, where there is less of a difference, and what loses them games is not moving fast enough, not failing tests.

Just used Skids through RtTCU using the new TSK cards and oh lord, action compression is *his* game. Even tho his ability is arguably below curve vs the rest of the cast (who just gets free actions for free, with some stipulations), having the freedom and versatility to decide *if* you want a free action this turn and *what* to use it for is so nice. Between Honed Instinct and Dirty Fighting Skids was regularly taking 5-6 actions in a single turn, and I didn't even use Leo de Luca!

Very good video. I think I would have to watch at least three other videos to get the same info, and even then it would not be presented as well.

Interesting video and also agree Subzerojo and bigstupidgrin (greetings by the way) of your comments. You also notice that well thought-out deck building at the beginning and how it should develop can make a big difference. Sure, also plays one or more roles which investigator and/or scenario/campaign plays. And of course the personal game style and the luck/bad luck in the mythos phase. Difficulty is only a very small factor for me. As a beginner or starting a new campaign that you don't know yet, I would personally play on easy. I play solo myself. 1 Handed or 2- Handed in easy or standard. Even play 4-handed solo, but only on easy, maybe I'll step up to standard next year or something^^.

14:15 The hipster in me thinks that the new worst action in the game is attacking an enemy for only 1 damage (weapon or no weapon, although wasting resources on a 1 damage weapon is suspect). Although it's usually not an ether/or with the draw one card or take one resource action.
Action compression and avoiding tests were my go-to strategies, since taking a bunch of 75%ers at normal speed (1 action = 1 clue/1-2 damage/moving 1 space) doesn't feel good enough.

Most people forget Evade is an offensive weapon. Evade and move on if it is not a hunter. Don't waste time fighting something if you do not have to.
