Amazing work, Sir!
Can I watch your guitar playing....??????????????🤔🤔🤔🤔
Nice Squier guitar 🎸 Fil
Hi Fil, you need to check out Vulfpeck.. no seriously 😁
more Chet Mark
The music I grew up on!! Love your intense eyes and smiles of acknowledgement, magic....
VERY interesting.... You clearly have your own act together. Thanks so much.
A superb analysis! Wonderful!
Dire Straits ALCHEMY LIVE performance was epoch - maybe the best live performance ever for any band!
100% incredible... the best live performance I've ever seen - in truth
Mark is Genius, the best one we got in the world
Sorry if this has been mention already. Mr. Knopfler is left-handed. His dominant hand does the fret work and his other hand does the picking work. Just amazing.
Truly amazing at fill in
Love Mark, he just plays so tastefully... no extra notes, no playing fast just for the sake of it just pure expression and emotion through the guitar... definitely one of the top 10 guitarists of all time...
Hi Ian! Well put!
Not even close.
Mark, like Eric Clapton, credits JJ Cale as a major influence!
Very well put. I started my own comment and then read yours and can only concurr...
NOBODY LIKE DIRE STRAITS!💗 The Absolute MAGIC That s Band Created Would Not Have Happened Without Mark, Of Course, But Brother David Too! They Were All Amazing Together!
As of March 2022 all of those same guys are sitting in Mark's studio recording new music along with a few other guys. Good times ahead.
How in the world do you know so much
Just amazing!!!!
Thanks!
Thank you! Very good analysis!
Dire straits always reminds me of a Turkish Gullet creaky wooden ship trip i went on around Malta isles for the day .They played Dire Straits music all the time .I love "Money for Nothin and your chicks for free ".
Playing this 1980 ..... driving down the Arnhem Hwy to Kakadu Nat Park with my best mate - cassette player going! We were the Sultan's of Swing! ❤❤❤ A few years later & I saw them in Adelaide. Best wishes from Australia 🇦🇺 ❤
Excellent Fil!! While viewing your videos, I have one eye on the artist and one eye on you! Your smile is an integral part of your videos IMHO! Keep up the good work!
Mark is soooooooooooooo cool!!
Quick note, this is not Dire Straits. This is MK from his "Night In London" show.
I appreciate that you talk about the muted notes. MK is one guitarist that makes them so melodic and beautiful to listen to.
Awesome, thanks Fil.
Just look at Fil's face - he knows, more than anyone, just how supreme this is! A wizard - great band.
at 18:40... who else expected that piano to slide into Telegraph Road?? It was all there in just a few notes...
Using the thumb to plub a string chsnges the attack. The sound asserts itself.
What an awesome analysis of the wonderful and unique finger picking style of Mr. Knopfler. Amazing how much of his style you managed to pack into a 30 minute segment! Nice job!
Love his picking on "In The Gallery". One of my favorites!
Fantastic and informative. Thank you. X
HI FI GREAT SHOWYOU HAD LIKE ALWAYS. WOW HOW COOL WAS THAT . HE WAS GREAT. THANKYOU FIL FOR WHAT YOU DO. LOVE TO HEAR YOUR PLAYING AND VIDEOES. LOVE IT. YOU ARE SO COOL. YOU ARE THE BEST. THANKYOU PEACE AND LOVE
Thank you, that was very interesting to watch.
Great analysis! Thanks Fil.
Great and insightful analysis, Fil.
Thank you for recognizing that every Mark Knopfler performance is a duet and a conversation -- Mark and his guitar, working things out and grooving together...
Love how you smile and laugh out of adoration at exact the right moments... I do the same... Pure joy...
Me too
Thank you for sharing brother fil. Lord bless you.
fabulous.
great , one of a kind !!!!!!
BTW he's left handed- spotted it in a youtube video where he's writing.
Thank you!
Wow great stuff thank you Phil
Smooth as silk!
Really good one those guys were so tight and tasteful
The sound is more "organic" the way he does it, and the feeeeeel. Nice vid WOP, keep coming back 2 it👌
This was excellent Fil !
my favorite 1 of the dire straits
Here's an amusement that Rick Beato gave us recently. This song refers to "Guitar George" (he knows all the chords). Well... George was (is??) a real person, and he has two very famous younger brothers. Angus and Malcolm Young, from AC/DC!!!
Awesome video! I loved Knopfler’s playing for decades but I didn’t really understand how he was playing.
I love that gig A Night In London, I wore out the video I had of this lol, so melodic with that clean sound that just pops
My favourite DVD (well maybe equal with Cohen's Live in London, and Floyd's Delicate Sound of Thunder)
Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker - "Shadows And Light".
Excellent, Mark Knopfler is so underrated. He deserves so much more recognition.
yes
I didn't know Mark Knopfler was under-rated. I thought everyone knew he was amazing!
@@ArchKomposer I didn't find him untill after 2000 around age 45. I Listen to him every week some times every day
He is widely recognized as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. If anything is underrated it might be his songwriting, but on the whole he does not lack recognition.
Not underrated at all.
Have you watched their Alchemy Live performance of this song? One of the best performances I have ever seen. Check it out.
The bloke is a genius, it would take 50 years of experience to play like that.
the brothers in arms tour - the show was one of the most musical , i mean, THE most musical. 'rock' show, i ever saw....
He is a fine guitarist
Thank you.🥰😍I'm in love with this man have been for years. I listen to Dire Straits for hours and anything with Mark he seeps into my soul, his guitar sings from his soul to his fingers to the guitar. I always know when that man is playing. No one can copy that man. Mark Knopfler forever.😎 His guitar sings to me.💖💖
Get Shagri-la if you don't have it. One of my favorites of his.
Yes or sultans of swung, brothers in charms or even the wank of life.
I'm the same. Great man. The greatest.
My nephew had a guitar magazine with their "Top 100 guitar solos". Well my top picks were Clapton "Crossroads" and Knopfler, "Sultans". Theirs were No.2, and No.4 or 5, so for somebody who doesn't know squat, I think I did pretty well.
My mistake. Clapton was their no.3. Behind 1, Hendrix SSB at Woodstock, and no.2, David Gilmour,"Comfortably Numb". Oh well, my bad.
Marvellous!
Such a tasteful player!
awesome explanations dude you rock :-)
FIL. your grin gives you away while listening to and watching Mark .
When you realize he never plays anything exactly the same , his guitar work becomes even more amazing and he has been playing this since the late 70's , nearly 50 years .
We mustn't forget Mr Knopfler wrote the words, music, arranged it, sang it and played his guitar only as he can play it.
The mans a GENIUS, more than talented, I think he's now retired at the young age of 72, 3 years younger than me.
Long may he reign ❤
LOVE finding gems like this one, I've not seen before. No one can give a guitar vibrato like Mark Knopfler. And yes- he makes his guitar sing, but also talk, and dance, and just come alive. Watching him in his younger years, playing with Chet Atkins, is just mesmerizing.
Excellent, cheers from Canada....how to strum like The Sultans of Swing???
King of vibrato amazing player and a humble man doesn’t get much better than that
Smooth! Patty
There is an amazing song on Mark’s solo album Golden Heart called Je Suis Desole that you should check out it is very well constructed
Pil Wonderful teacher
Great sing band sweet❤️🙏🏻🥰✌🏻🥳✌🏻🙏🏻
Love Mark's Pensa Suhr with EMG's..
I can't get enough of this performance ! Thank you Fil from Eve Green San Raphael Ca.
Great watching a master of his craft at work, when Clapton often plays second guitar to you it’s mad.
My favorite musician. Unmatched tone and quality.
A wizard!
Please try to find Paul Kossof playing 'Alright Now' live - I'd love to see you break it down
Too cool Fil....keep it up ...🤟🎸Rock!
When I first heard Chris Rea play, he reminded me of Mark's sound a bit.
That's a cool sound
Alchemy Live remains the best live performance of this song. Epically energetic.
That sexy Saxophone !!
Agreed!! I have listened to that live performance hundreds of times, it never gets old.
Mark Knopfler' has written some amazing songs . Tunnel of love and Brothers in Arms , which is so moving i can't play it without feeling emotion .
Always loved the Dire Straits.
Pure Art.
What makes it even more genius is that he's standing there like it's a piece of cake.
Great sound on that tele, sir
part of this is actually the Telegraph Road solo
After 60 years of playing, I've become a fan of 'fill notes' and not necessarily the lead stuff. I learned that playing so much country music. Mark's technique of answering his vocals is unmatched,,he doesn't follow any rules playing minor or flat 7's in his answering isn't played by no one else. Definitely his OWN style and I don't think anything else would've made him the player he is today..He's one of my favorites. He's not a 'Scale' player.
MK has always hit the right note, at the right time, in the right way. An absolute master.
I like that Mark created his own sound, rather than copying other players. The guy is a genius!👍😎🎸🎶
I love Mark's playing as much as anyone but if you listen to JJ Cale you'll see where Mark got much of his sound from :)
Agreed
@@mikedr1549 Totally agree. I'm a huge fan of Mark, but the truth is the truth. He took from JJ Cale not only the guitar sound but the way of singing, the voice, the tone... And as I said, I'm the biggest fan of Mark and Dire Straits. But you cant deny that when you listen to JJ Cale. It's obvious.
@@mikedr1549 Yeah, his playing always reminded of JJ Cale, I’ve never heard Mark make any reference to him in interviews though
@@okee9 yeah, when people make associations like this it isn't necessarily a representation of reality, it's just what someone thinks to themselves. You could just as easily say it's like BB King with the silence filled in. Bluesy rock is bluesy rock
/you need to back the old gray whistle test days, first TV performance.
So Fantastic Fil, never had anyone break it down like you do (of Mark Knopfler) on all the most intricate parts, so amazing. Your talent is so evident on so many videos that you have done and also your own playing. Never get tired of watching your analysis and clarity in what you share!
Hi Fil, great vid. Sister Em asks if we can get a better close up of your guitar work in the picture.
Do a video of the version they did for the "thank you austrailia&new Zealand concert...wow he made the start cry in that one..:)
You can see the Awe in Fils face while watching that guitar solo! ❤❤❤
WINGS, I FIRST HEARD THIS SONG IN '79 AS IT STARTED MAKING IT'S ROUNDS AS I WAS IN COLLEGE AND PLAYING IN A "JOHNNY WINTER/CLAPTON/ZZ TOP" 3-PIECE INFLUENCED TYPE OF BAND....WE WORKED ON IT FOR A WHILE THEN GRADUATED AND THAT WAS THAT! EVERYONE WAS PLAYING IT IN THE BARS LATER AS WAS *WARREN HAYNES* IN A BAND CALLED RICOCHET BEFORE *DAVID ALLEN COE* ON TOUR WALKED INTO A LOCAL BAR AS HE PLAYED IT AND THEN IT WAS HISTORY! WARREN JOINED COE AND THEN THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, GOV'T MULE, ....ETCCCCCCC... EVERYTIME I HEAR THE SONG IT REMINDS ME OF THOSE DAYS NOW! LOL! I THINK I WILL NOW TRY TO LEARN IT ALL THE WAY JUST TO SATISFY MYSELF! LOL!!!!!!!!...THANKS FOR THE VID AND BREAK DOWN! GREAT JOB!
The total king. He remains impassive, as if what he is doing is easy or natural, while his sound takes you on an emotional journey like nobody else does. (well... maybe just a few others ;) Great video, thanks!
Take Years! I love when you talk about Mark's playing!
When I first heard this song on my little transistor radio while hitchhiking Ireland in Co. Cork, I stood with my friend and our mouths dropped agape and we looked at each other and smiled in amazement at the music. Ty Fil!
Signature sound
You could make a video playing " sultans of swing".
Great reaction mate 👍
What about Dave Gilmour Pulse Comfortably Numb? At the Live Aid Concert 1985 Wembley you see a young Gilmour playing a short amazing guitar!! with Bryan Ferry Gilmours in the Blue shirt
Wonderfully informative. Thanks Fil
I’m in awe of the spectrum of your wisdom beyond your apparent age.
Where I live we have the lyrics of Tunnel of Love etched into the paving stones on the sea front . Been a fan of MKs since the late 70s. This clip is from one night in London . A fabulous set.
Hi Fil. I just love the Guitar and story, I over analyze lyrics in music Like the inventor.l love the writers when you understand. its a great version. Love The Song
You are so knowledgable Fil, And so cute too.
mark knopfler's style and technique are so distinctive and unique on the guitar it truly makes mark knopfler the real "SULTAN of swing"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
