My first Shinedown show was one of the acoustic show, and when Brent talked about what The Crow and the Butterfly was about, I was in tears. Have been battling Cancer for 2 1/2 yrs now. Have beat Stage 4 Kidney & also Spine. Although i have accepted my fate i cannot help feeling remorse for what my family will have to endure when i go. God Bless you sir
i am hoping that bret and the band, reads these comments from time to time. I think you are the best in the industry and a gift to us all. It has now been a year since my Jeffery left. He ran away from me to California . He was missing person for 2years. When i was notified of his passing, it broke me. He had been in a coma for 8 months unidentified, until he left and as a john Doe. During thie 8 months of his coma, he visited me in my dreams. He was always chasing me , even in life. I have never talked publicly about what happened. I think its too much for most . This song strikes a chord in my heart , that feels like he is here with me.
To any mother or father who has lost a child, either in-utero or otherwise, this song is tremendously meaningful. The feeling cannot even be described, it never goes away.
I lost my oldest child to a house fire caused by an arsonist almost a year ago...this song has helped me get through the loss of both my child and my home and family pet...I have listened to it nearly every day since then and it still makes me tear up thinking about her... Bless you Shinedown!!!
Pseudo Mental Distortion oh honey how heart breaking. I’m so sorry. To you I send Silent Lucidity from Queensryche. It always helps me. Music does everything for me. It’s healing and makes us remember everything at some time we’ve experienced. Shinedown is an exceptional bunch of guys. Your little angels will always be with you in your heart and watch over you. Sending much love 🤗🤗😇😇
I'm just reading this now and I send my condolences and hope the years have brought some measure of peace. Not sure what even makes sense at times like these. The song that I've always gone to when something tears my guts out, like my separation 12 years ago, is the song Agony by Breaking Benjamin. I was in such pain and mental distress over the loss of my marriage that I'd bawl my eyes out listening to that song. The video on here that someone made uses Will Smith from the movie-7 pounds. It shows his anguish and misery after his wife is killed in a major car accident while he's driving. God bless you and I hope the arsonist is rotting away in prison for the rest of their days.❤💔
My sons father passed away a year ago this month and Shinedown has gotten me through some dark days and even darker nights. There's something about Brent Smith that just touches my soul, that voice, those eyes! Keep on blessing us with your music.
When I lost my dad shinedown esp Brent got me through all the pain and helped heal my broken heart 💔 they are totally amazing. Brent's voice is so soothing and he is just awesome in concert. Saw shinedown Sept 17th 2021 in Minneapolis with Seether most incredible concert ever. Their music is so full of love, real life, inspiration and they love to show their fans that we are important to them. Get up also got me through when I lost my grandmother.
Shinedown have got me through the most difficult times, I lost my wife 5 years ago to cancer and there were times where i wanted to end mine but songs like this one have pulled me to through, thank you Shinedown
I've seen them live twice now and I will never hesitate to go 100 more times. Brent Smith and the whole band put on such a good show and he did so many good songs. I just can't wait for the next concert!
My brother and I saw them in Bonner Springs last year and just bought our tickets to see them in Lincoln Nebraska next month. They are one of the better performers I have seen in concert.
TELL ME ABOUT IT! I SAW THEM LAST YEAR IN GREEN BAY. GREEN BAY WAS SOLD OUT, SO I'M LOOKING AT ANOTHER CITY. THEY R MY FAVORITE BAND TODAY, TOMORROW AND THERE AFTER.
I saw them in 2022. One thing I did notice is. They don't have as many opening acts as they used to because they're getting old. 😂 lol Still one of the best shows have ever been to.
I feel like this band, does not get enough credit from the "industry" it was a smash hit on the radio. This group is so talented, and where is the Grammy or MTV nomination to go with it? Sincerely, Erica Forsyth
+Erica Forsyth I agree with you. Especially with the variety of styles they pull of so well on their cds as well when you can go from this to something like Sound of Madness or Cut the Cord.
Awards don't mean shit. They are "bought" or bid for with "donations". Any good musician knows some of the most talented bands never get radio play or mainstream media exposure. I love music but despise the industry.
This song is about a mother losing her son. The mother is the butterfly and the painful memory of losing her son is the crow. The mother is trying to move on from the loss of her son but she is being chased by the memory of her son. He had a dream about it.
I was actually at Kansas watching Shinedown when Brent first revealed that. He said it wasnt specifically a girl or a boy just a child, and that everything will be ok and that they are watching over her and to stick through it. They just made it a boy for the video
The mother would not be the butterfly, she'd be the crow. The crow lives longer than the butterfly, and the butterfly dies too young. bitter sweet and beautiful, but it leaves a void and a durable memory. Something of which crows are vastly adept at, even rivaling human memories, crows morn for their own for a long time... so yes while the painful memory of loosing her son is still the crow... she's the crow chasing the butterfly, the ephemeral gossamer of her child that will never be obtained. Also, more symbolically, women are often represented by crows in mythos and literature. They're also representative of death... in the video itself, the woman is chasing searching the ball for the child.. there's also a butterfly on the tombstone where she places the rose, symbolizing healing, letting go, and that she's no longer chasing the butterfly, because the butterfly is the grave - the death of her child, and the solid representation of the tombstone.
I think your taking the lyrics too literally, it is symbolism for death imo, If a crow chases a butterfly the butterfly has no chance, it is toast. Dandelions lost in the summer sky again symbolizing the end when the dandelion blows away in summer after it has died and turned white
Same. I sit back and think of why I always come back to these songs. I used to judge myself harshly calling myself names for liking depressing songs. And asking myself why I am always seeking anything depressed. But in reality I just love strong emotional and anything that can express what I am feeling. This song does that for me. I've never been in love but I love knowing a guy has this kind of passion and such ability at eloquence (something I do not possess) (I'm shy and mostly keep quiet) I'm not comfortable expressing all of my emotions. Maybe I don't even know how with words. But this. THIS is gold and I feel closer to myself through this. And maybe that's why I'm always sad because I can't express myself so when I hear people express their pain or scream a mealody with pain like this "crow chasing a butterfly" the tone just equals me
a great song about death chasing life...the Crow represents death, and the Butterfly represents life...to me it's about losing a loved one, whether it be a parent, a girlfriend, a cousin, an aunt or uncle, or just someone you loved dearly...it comes for us all, and ín my opinion, this song is speaking of this unfortunate event that we'll all face someday.
Your actually really close; the song was about a mother losing her child all too soon. The phrase like "The crow and the Butterfly" represent book titles. "Getting high as outer space" was a book about astronauts. It's honestly really sad if you get into the specifics.
Lost her son to sids. Crow in the butterfly dandelions and the sunshine and the outer space line are all books that she read to her son. Then you got where the mom says. She was just a little too late brings me to tears every time I hear it
Listening to shinedown for the first time in years…. I remember both why I loved them and why I stopped listening. Every song rips my heart to shreds 💕
YES Absolutely......When this album hit, me and my wife of 22yrs were going through a divorce. I stopped listening to Shinedown and especially this song....."I never thought you would slip away". Such a gut wrenching time for me/both of us and our 2 daughters. That was 13 yrs ago and man it's hard listening to this
my daughter died last 4th of July broke her family's heart, she left behind two little girls,I played this song at her funeral she was only 29 year's old.She loved this song, and shine down.
Today is the one year anniversary of my baby brother taking his life. There were 13 yrs between us. This song helps me release the pain in my heart. Thank you Shinedown, this song reminds me of him.
Hi. Just wanted to let you know this comment really stuck out to me. I listen to it and it reminds me of my big sister Jen. We were 9 years apart. I was 23 and she was 32 when she committed suicide, we were bestfriends. June 28th marks 5 years since her death. Just wanted to let you know there is someone else who empathizes with you. Stay strong & thinking of you, its so hard 😢 I know.
I wish I could say thank you to Shinedown. Thank you for all the years of excellent music. Thank you for the many hours I have spent listening to the art of your songs. Thank you for the happiness you have brought to my life.
+Aaron Willard I have and they are the nicest most down to earth guys you could ever meet. The most special time was after my brother died and I had a chance meeting with Barry in a restaurant. Means the world to me even now.
I always liked this song. I never knew what it was about. Then my youngest son died in December and the next time I listened to it, it clicked. It's amazing how someone can write so poignantly from a distance.
I had a girlfriend , I dedicated this song to her and since then she used to call me "Crow" and I used to call her "Butterfly". I always knew this song was about a love that ends, but we loved it anyway. Two months after that, she broke up with me because I was overwhelming her. Now it's all ok , she forgot me and I made a big effort to keep her out of my mind. Now, this songs seems ironic to me, it started as a love song but now it's just what it was meant to be: A song about a love that's over. Now this song has a meaning, a story and a lot of memories and feelings. Something that was just a song will always be a little part of me. EDIT: seen some coments saying "get over it", this happened more than 5 years ago, I'm fine with this part of my life and now she is just an ex, no hard feelings. Glad yall liked my story tho.
i know im randomly asking but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me!
I love this song. It's one of my absolute favs. His voice, OMG! The man is very talented. More ways than one. And has been thru alot. And overcome it to boot. My hats off to him & the whole band. They stuck together. Not many bands have. But they did. And I think they're even better. It takes years to get wisdom. And this band definitely deserves their wisdom! Keep up the amazing good work. Love y'all forever.
This song means everything to me. I lost my daughter on July 24th of this year 2018. Her mother got into drugs and alcohol while she was pregnant so Carolina didn't survive. I just want to thank Shinedown who has been an influence on my life since they debuted when I was a small child. I had already planned to get crows on my arm. I heard this song on the first month anniversary and the design was changed to the Crow chasing the butterfly. Soon, despite losing my baby girl and first child. I will still always carry her with me. Thank you 4 for inspiring me to continue living for her.
This and "Second Chance" are some of my favorite songs from Shinedown, not to mention "Simple Man" which I will sing to my daughter one day to teach her how to be a woman.
Patsy Cline crazy learn her man it's simple sis teach her music if your going to try they have there own view what are you doing still teaching birds and bees
I had a stillborn baby. when he hands her the locket with the picture in it... it gets me every time. just floors me. the music moves me. the song... the lyrics are so well written. a haunting melody.. i feel like they speak to my soul.
Oh how I miss my SON. He passed away almost 2 years ago : ( .He was the Butterfly and I The Dandelion. I use two go out and find 4 leaf clovers and put them in my little Bible that I got in Bible School. I did the same thing for him. Mommy Loves You And Misses You Dearly. SHINEDOWN YOUR SONGS HAS STORYS THAT TELL THE TRUE MEANING OF LIFE...
Understand so deeply. Lost our son to PTSD from combat, and he left us Dec 16, 2017. Was working and this song came on. All the emotions came to surface and had to walk outside. Couple songs can bring me to tears...this is one of them. Miss him....
As the mother of a lost child, this one breaks my heart. I used to take my son on airplane "joyrides", and the line, "when you & I were getting high as outer space" really tears me up. At the same time, just as our family was at its peak (mutual respect & success), I had a catastrophic accident & my heroic son, ghosted me. I discovered Shinedown right around this time. I believe they've had a major influence in keeping me alive. Their depth is soul healing. Thank you, gentlemen.
Its amazing how I miss these great songs. I only hear them when these singing competitions come on tv. Shinedown rocks the house and I need to get on board... The girl from American idol rocked it.
Brent Smith has an unforgettably rich tenor voice. Absolutely pure and clear. The closest thing I can think of is opera when those amazing voices resonate. His words and delivery are lovely and unforgettable.
My son who is 45, hasn't talked to us in almost 20 years. Erik Pendleton is his name. I'm saying this to ask for everyone to send good vibes to us so, just maybe he'll come back. We love him and his family so much!! We have a 16 year old granddaughter that doesn't know us! My heart hurts everyday. God, please help us change this. This song brings all this to the surface. Sorry for rambling on 😞
Shinedown has always been my favorite band. The first time I saw them was in 2004 at Harpos in Detroit. I was with my ex, he liked them too and was the one who introduced me to them. Once we split in 2011 I had a hard time listening to them because they the songs would always remind me of him. Now after all this time I started listening to them and I have all these memories and feelings. It's hard because my ex and I have a son together and he hasn't seen our son in 6 years. At least there new stuff is good and I can make new memories to those songs.
Hi, your son's father sounds like a schmuck. I had to fight my ex tooth and nail to get joint custody of our son and daughter. Finally the family court judge awarded me visitation every other weekend and any day during the week with at least one day's notice for my ex.
This song reminds about letting the love of my life go to find happiness in the arms of someone else because I could not give that level of happiness to her myself. That's what true love is though. To see the one you love the dearest find that happiness even though it may not include you.
There's SO much passion in Brent's body language in this towards the end of this one.. The rocking of himself while he hits that last note.. AWESOME video.
Shinedowns music is so moving and deep, it's like they've reached into my soul and pulled out everything I've ever felt or done or thought about and turned it into something beautiful wrapped with a bow on top, hands down will always be my #1 go to for any and all emotion I'm feeling, made me understand myself more!!! It's like therapy for me.
I lost my mom 8/3/2020(single mother growing up)being 25 and living 100% on my own at 17, she had taught me so much, and many songs that remind me of her bring tears of sadness, but this one brings tears of happiness. I hope you all live a good life. Tell your parents(if there good) that you love them everyday, you never know when it’s that last day .
Lost my mom to drugs & copd a year ago … this song makes me think of her so much … she loved shinedown and had even seen them in concert… “I never saw you slip away I guess I’m a little to late “ kills me … I will forever come back to this song … music makes me feel close to her and this is one of the songs .
I've been a shinedown fan since their first album... I've always loved them...even before everyone knew who they were! I've been to at least 15 of their shows! I lost my daughter in 2013 and and this song will always hold a special place in my ❤!
I painted your room at midnight So I'd know yesterday was over I put all your books on the top shelf Even the one with the four leaf clover Man I'm getting older I took all your pictures off the wall And I wrapped them in a newspaper blanket And I haven't slept in what seems like a century And now I can barely breathe Just like the crow chasing the butterfly Dandelions lost in the summer sky Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space I never thought you would slip away I guess I was just a little too late Your words still serenade me And your lullaby's, they won't let me sleep And I've never heard such a haunting melody Oh it's killing me You know I can barely breathe Just like the crow chasing the butterfly Dandelions lost in the summer sky Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space I never thought you would slip away I guess I was just a little too late Just like the crow chasing the butterfly Dandelions lost in the summer sky Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space I never thought you would slip away I guess I was just a little too late Just like the crow chasing the butterfly Dandelions lost in the summer sky Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space I never thought you would slip away I guess I was just a little too late I was just a little too late I was just a little too, little too late Songwriters: Brent Smith / Dave Bassett
I definitely still get chills,Brent's voice just speaks to my heart. 🎤🎵💟 he is incredible with his talent for lifting people up during difficult times and encouraging us to keep trying and moving on!!! 🎤🎵💟🥰
Perfectly depicting mine and my moms relationship. I love you momma wherever you are. This has always been our song. Like a crow chasing a butterfly. Addiction is hell
Who's here in 21, still crying to this song? I bawled my eyes out when they performed this at the concert I went to after I had just suffered a miscarriage.
When I hear this song, I think of a time when I was struggling with addiction, heartbreak, loneliness, and frequent thoughts of suicide. This became part of a soundtrack that helped me (barely) escape that episode of my life.
I have a 29 year old son who is homeless in another state. He is struggling to get over heroin addiction. He was in the hospital with a severe staph infection. He finally wants to make his life better. I'm bringing him home. Whether you know it or not, there is always someone that cares about you. Your life and what you do with it is always your choice, but remember the ones that love you. This is coming from the heart of a mother. Take care and I wish you well.
This, 45, BRILLIANT, and Atlas Falls are getting me through the rough patches. Atlas Falls is there for me when those closest to me are hurting. BRILLIANT is for the days I need hope, and a reminder that it’s my day to be brilliant. 45 for the dark days that I wish to slip back into old habits. A reminder that I’m past that. And this one. The Crow and the Butterfly. It means everything to me. The countless times I’ve almost lost those close to me from suicide. The times love fell out. And the time I’m having right now, my best friend hospitalized for God-knows how long. Music is up to interpretation, just as life.

Damn Jimmy...I hope your son is still singing
i am hoping that bret and the band, reads these comments from time to time.
He is with you ❤
Hugs
To any mother or father who has lost a child, either in-utero or otherwise, this song is tremendously meaningful.
The feeling cannot even be described, it never goes away.
true there
You are correct I lost my only child a son 10yrs ago my family name die's with me
It doesnt, even after 32 years. Thank you.
This man's voice is so captivating. Nobody could sing his songs better.
his name is Brent Smith
And its only gotten stronger as time goes on
I lost my oldest child to a house fire caused by an arsonist almost a year ago...this song has helped me get through the loss of both my child and my home and family pet...I have listened to it nearly every day since then and it still makes me tear up thinking about her...
God bless you. I’m sorry.
@@Bandit69ply thank you
This song came out at the same time my wife died. 12 years later, and this song still brings a tear to my eyes. RIP Liz.
So sorry for your lost
Still a masterpiece. Such an underrated band and singer.

I’m not sure either e
Shinedown have got me through the most difficult times, I lost my wife 5 years ago to cancer and there were times where i wanted to end mine but songs like this one have pulled me to through, thank you Shinedown
Love it when you can hear the guitar cry on the solos. Idk if yall get what I mean.
Yes that's always my favorite part of any song with a guitar solo.
Yes, beautiful...
Of course its the only way a song like this is much more beautiful and believable
I do
I do, totally!!
@@abbiehoffman9069 HAVE FUN! I AM DETERMINED TO SEE THEM THIS YEAR SOEWHERE.
63 yrs old, first time hearing it... I'm in love with it. 🎶🎸🎹🎚️🎙️
That voice is penetrating.
+Austin Konkle agree

Awards don't mean shit. They are "bought" or bid for with "donations". Any good musician knows some of the most talented bands never get radio play or mainstream media exposure. I love music but despise the industry.
They are not copy cats, so the industry ignores them.

This song is about a mother losing her son. The mother is the butterfly and the painful memory of losing her son is the crow. The mother is trying to move on from the loss of her son but she is being chased by the memory of her son. He had a dream about it.
thanks.
I was actually at Kansas watching Shinedown when Brent first revealed that. He said it wasnt specifically a girl or a boy just a child, and that everything will be ok and that they are watching over her and to stick through it. They just made it a boy for the video
Quentin Wagner he met a mom at one of his concerts actually and this is what came of that.
This song and Never Too Late by Three Days Grace are the closest any songs have ever brought me to tears
Never Too Late, best song to exist
I disagree strongly man
Well considering never too late isn't about a breakup I don't see why it would bring you to tears
chaosXP3RT Bother by Stone Sour does it for me out of these 3. But I love all 3. :D
chaosXP3RT Actually i hear it like ''Like a Stone'' by Audioslave and a song of Avenged Sevenfold
Whenever i listen to Shinedown, I somehow taste the comfort. Shinedown has got me through a lot and will continue to due so until the day I die.
i know. same here. its why i listen to rock. deeper shit than anything else
I hear ya..I love Shinedown,,
same obviously. little sad smith cut his hair but i'm glad he still does pretty much the same style
She was just a little too late brings me to tears every time I hear it
As an artist, you can reach a person's soul in a profound way like no other can...
this song never fails to remind me of my mom. happy mother’s day mommy . rest in peace
I miss my mom too. 😢
Sorry for you’re losses, sending lots of love ❤

Yep, still watching in 2019. Hello 💜
It’s amazing how Brent actually looks ten years younger in 2020. It’s amazing what good diet and exercise does for you!
This song brings me to tears every single time I listen to it.
Omg me too!!!
I'm glad it's not only me
I had a girlfriend , I dedicated this song to her and since then she used to call me "Crow" and I used to call her "Butterfly".
Thank you for sharing. Relationships are hard but anything worth having is worth fighting for.

Christian Myers Thanks for sharing your story. I hope you are doing well, and good!
This and "Second Chance" are some of my favorite songs from Shinedown, not to mention "Simple Man" which I will sing to my daughter one day to teach her how to be a woman.
You should also play her the song Dear Daughter by Halestorm!!

@@HeyWiseGuy thank you. Ended up selling and buying new house, moving as the empty room was too hard to walk by. Too many memories.
The most underrated rock band (according to me) . I am an ardent fan of this band.

We love him and his family so much!! We have a 16 year old granddaughter that doesn't know us! My heart hurts everyday. God, please help us change this. This song brings all this to the surface. Sorry for rambling on 😞
YES!!!
100%
I have a hard time listening to a band my ex husband and I loved too. I actually avoid listening to them. We saw them live twice. I miss you, Nick.
This song reminds about letting the love of my life go to find happiness in the arms of someone else because I could not give that level of happiness to her myself.
That's what true love is though. To see the one you love the dearest find that happiness even though it may not include you.

I painted your room at midnight
So I'd know yesterday was over
I put all your books on the top shelf
Even the one with the four leaf clover
Man I'm getting older
I took all your pictures off the wall
And I wrapped them in a newspaper blanket
And I haven't slept in what seems like a century
And now I can barely breathe
Just like the crow chasing the butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space
I never thought you would slip away
I guess I was just a little too late
Your words still serenade me
And your lullaby's, they won't let me sleep
And I've never heard such a haunting melody
Oh it's killing me
You know I can barely breathe
Just like the crow chasing the butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space
I never thought you would slip away
I guess I was just a little too late
Just like the crow chasing the butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space
I never thought you would slip away
I guess I was just a little too late
Just like the crow chasing the butterfly
Dandelions lost in the summer sky
Cause when you and I were gettin' high as outer space
I never thought you would slip away
I guess I was just a little too late
I was just a little too late
I was just a little too, little too late

This is a really beautifully written song, Shinedown should really get more credit.

And still
Perfectly depicting mine and my moms relationship. I love you momma wherever you are. This has always been our song. Like a crow chasing a butterfly. Addiction is hell
Who's here in 21, still crying to this song? I bawled my eyes out when they performed this at the concert I went to after I had just suffered a miscarriage.
How I wish i.knew what the young man whispered to his mom, I wanna think he said " you were the best mom anyone could ever have, I love u".
Words to that effect, or a happy memory.
One of the best bands around to this day! Can't ever get enough of shinedown
