  • In all these years I've been lucky enough to see and record many Lancia Rally 037 Group B cars at various events here in Italy. And above all still properly driven.
    In early 80s Lancia began the development of the 037 to comply with the then new FIA Group B regulations that allowed manufacturers to race with relatively few homologation models being built (200 road legal units). The car was developed in collaboration between Pininfarina, Abarth, Dallara and the project manager, engineer Sergio Limone.
    The SE037 project was born on the basis of the Lancia Beta Montecarlo, from which the monocoque was maintained. Two tubular structures were anchored to the central cell of the standard Beta Montecarlo: the front one holds the wishbone suspensions and the radiators while the rear one holds the engine block in central/rear position, gearbox and differential. The bodywork was made of polyester with fiberglass reinforcements and it was designed by Pininfarina. The engine developed by Abarth was a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder unit fitted with a supercharger instead of a turbocharger to eliminate turbo lag and improve throttle response. Initially, power was quoted at 265 hp but was soon increased to 280 hp.
    The car made its competition debut at the 1982 Rally Costa Smeralda in Italy, where two cars were entered but both retired due to gearbox issues. The 1982 season was plagued with retirements for the 037, but the new car did manage to achieve several wins. 1983 season went way better with Lancia winnin the manufacturers' World Championship making the 037 the last rear-wheel drive car to win the WRC.
    For the 1984 Constructors' title defence, Lancia introduced an Evolution 2 version of the 037 with improved engine power output and reduced weight (960 kg) but this was not enough to stem the tide of 4WD competition, losing to Audi in both 1984 championships and again to the 4WD Peugeot 205 T16 in its final works season in 1985. The 'Evo 2' is moved by a supercharged 2.1 liter 4-cylinder engine which was able to produce around 320 bhp at 8,000 rpm and a max torque of 333 Nm at 5,500 rpm.
    (Evo 2 cars are easily recognizable by their lack of the rear bumper which has been specifically modified to improve engine cooling in the lower part).
    Enjoy it!

    Choked up, almost shed a tear at the sight of these amazing cars being enjoyed to their max. Equally angry at the Fiat group and their impossibly stupid decision to kill the brand. Fantastic video thank you

    Something I think will die with my generation of race fans is the enjoyment of very different exhaust notes and the smell of different exhausts. I’ve heard the 5 cylinder Audi whoosh and chirp, V12 Jaguars and Ferraris sing an opera on the high banks, 500ci Prostock motors run 10-11k RPMs, 4 rotor rotaries, big block chevys shaking the ground and on and on. As tiny motors get muffled with energy recovery systems and electric motors play a larger and larger role, I become disinterested. In 30 years will anyone talk about hearing the start of a Formula E race or the smell of hot motors and batteries? I’m sure todays kids will find enjoyment in electric racing of the future, but I’ll always prefer the mechanical symphony of burning fuel and a tuned exhaust.

    Eventhough it's not as batshyte crazy (read slower) as most of the other Group B cars I still love it; it looks and sounds great and 'only' has ~300hbp and is easier to dance around the corner with the RWD; I've always seen it as the Stratos v2...

    • @woongah
      @woongah ปีที่แล้ว

      I could agree, note that the 037 is a much more predictable car than the Stratos ever was. If only the AWD era had not arrived...

    this guy (these guys?) really know how to slide.
    The way these guys were linking slides, people would use to tell me that was impossible in a rear mid engine when I joked that if youre always sideways, snap oversteer wouldnt be as much of an issue.
    makes me want an MR2 as an all season sports car.
