Thrill of my life was when I overheard my daughter when she was 18 singing this song all the way through! My mouth dropped to the floor and all she could say was, "Damn, Mom, why didn't you turn me onto this song before!"
I was like 5 years old and I remember singing the part "I'd like to hear some funky Dixieland pretty mama come and take me by the hand"... over and over and over, like little kids do. None of us knew what a Dixieland was and we didn't call our Moms "pretty mamas" but it sounded cool.
'Pretty mama' just referred to attractive ladies back in the day, not anyone's actual mom lol. But yeah, right there w you; all 70s kids were singing this one :)
I grew up on the Mississippi river in Illinois- and I love this song. The river is called "black water" because it's full of silt and soil runoff from the mid-west farms, so it literally runs black in some areas- Great reaction!
Never fails… Anytime I need a little pick me up, throw on some Shon reactions, and all is right in the world again! I just love the positive vibes you ALWAYS have, and it’s contagious my friend. Thank you 🙏
My husband & I came of age in the 1970's, when kids drove their parents crazy with loud rock music. When we were dating, my husband told me that the one band his mother (who came of age in the 1940's) didn't mind him playing was the Doobie Brothers. She came of age in the 1930's. Shon, the fact that a young person in 2023 also loves the Doobies delights me and it speaks volumes about how great and timeless their music is.
@@elisaabolafia9542 Switch up/transitions really make creative, dynamic, fun, interesting songs. We're used to it from growing up with it but many young reactors (not saying it's true for this video reaction) are really surprised by them when they first start out (since today's music is mostly wholly uninspiring, lol).
This song came out when I was 14 and it's still one of my favorite songs by The Doobie Brothers. Watching your reaction put a huge smile on my face. So glad you enjoyed it! For your next reaction I would suggest "China Grove" or "Give Me the Beat Boys".
'Give Me the Beat Boys' is actually a song called 'Drift Away', which the Doob Bros never recorded (they may have played it live; idk). It was written by a country artist but soul singer Dobie Gray had the massive hit version, in 1973. Uncle Kracker also had a hit w it in 2003, which Dobie Gray also sang on. **Some total idiot posted a youtube vid as "Doobie Give me the beat boys" which has taken some reactors in, thinking it is the Doob Bros, but it is Dobie Gray**
First you're drifting down the river, then you hop off the raft and go drinking with your friends, then you're out on the street corner doing a little a capella harmonizing. It's the most awesome song. Impossible to feel down when this is playing!
This is the great music I was lucky enough to grow up with. So good to see younger folks hear it for the first time. Classic harmonies, love me some Doobie Bros
This came out when I was in second or third grade and of course I immediately loved it. And what's amazing about it is that it was on the radio all the time and it starts off kind of hard to pin down but it feels good, and then suddenly it just coalesces into that fantastic singalong. Everybody would instinctively just start singing along and learn all the different parts and so forth. So good.
Got to see them live about 4 weeks ago, and this song absolutely made us ALL stand up, dance, and sing along. It's especially sweet to me - my brother (when he was little) used to change the station whenever this came on because he thought it was hokey. You can imagine my great delight in informing him that it was the #1 song the week he was born! :D
This is one of those 1970s songs by Southern Rock-style bands that soothes the soul. Hee, I remember as a young 'un thinking "'Doobie'? What kind of last name is that?" before learning that "doobie" is slang for a marijuana cigarette.
@@sylvanaire It amazes me that we learned those bits of info without benefit of the internet! I was quicker on picking up that pot's slang term "Mary Jane" was based on the letters m and j in the word "marijuana." Just think, if they'd stuck with the original "marihuana" spelling (or however the Reefer Madness movie spelled it), we'd never have gotten to enjoy such a cheesy nickname! :D
Listen to the music, Give me the beat boys, Jesus is just alright, Southern CA, the 70's, you just took me back...You might like The Allman Brothers, though from FLA, they have that TX blues/ rock thing going on, which I love, Whipping Post, Midnight Rider, Statesboro Blues, a bit edgier, bluesier, but peaceful to the soul...blues my happy music, blues rock, feel good music, to me anyway...and of course, one of my favorites from TX, Mr Stevie Ray Vaughan, figure lot of peeps wouldn't consider Doobie Brothers, ( doobie, what we called a marijuana cig back in the day), but Give Me The Beat Boys, has that southern rock bluesy flavor, though most of their music kind of classical, love all genres of music, but bluesy rock my favorite, well, except for Moody Blues 💙 ha! My, but I do go on! Ha! Love your channel, really like seeing young people discover, enjoy, the good old music I grew up with...so many awesome bands in the 60's, 70's....90's hmmm, skipped the 80's whoops, haha! Bit of a dry spell there.
Love Love the Doobie Brothers ♥️ and this is one of my favorites 👏👏 I’ve Learned over time that about the age of 12 is when you really appreciate music and it kind of defines your life; the music that comes to mind when you think back on your early years anyway. This is that for me.
I was in some plays in college early 70's , my fellows drama friends😊😢 would meet in the student lounge, put several guarters in the jukebox, and would sing some funky Dixie land over and over again, thanks for bringing back those fun times. 😅
My favorite Doobie Brothers song. This is earlier than the other song you heard, before Michael McDonald vocals. I prefer early sound of country rock vibe. McDonald changed it more to pop music sounding. Try to find this live in NYC. They’re really talented. That fiddle is everything. Vocals here are Patrick Simmons, also wrote it! Enjoy!
YES, Shon! the best song ever by the Doobies.. they had some other good stuff before they got Michael McDonald.. lost all interest after that guy... this is classic!... appreciate your listen!
I lived in Mississippi for 5 years. I still call everyone baby, gotta love picking up reginal dialects. Hurricanes were kind of scary fun, coming from a desert rat, that was gnarly baby. Helluva lotta moon jellies in the water.
There a two key periods in the history of the band, imo, and that is pre-Michael McDonald, and post Michael McDonald. Both are great and both are very different too. This song is before Michael joined the band. The live video film of them performing is great too.
Doobie Brothers have a deep catalog, and even different eras of singers. Definitely check out "Long Train Runnin'", "Listen to the Music" and "China Grove". Watch out for link that says "Official video" for Long Train Runnin'" though - it's some remixed version. You want the original studio version: th-cam.com/video/CVsLEI-hCXw/w-d-xo.html
Brother, I grew up in these times when all music was banging ! We felt the same thing as you do listening to it then 😉 check out (wildflower ) from Skylark ! Keep up the great work !
Another amazing reaction! The only reactor I hit the like button on before they even get started. Sure would like to see you react to Ted Nugent - Stranglehold, studio version. I'm sure it'll be on your playlist. Keep up the work. I think your gonna go far brother. Thanks for the entertainment.
OTHER ARTISTS & SONGS a little on the lighter side: Enigma - Return to Innocence / Enya - Only Time. A little rock to this one - Alanah Miles - Black Velvet

I remember my five year old singing, Foxy Lady, in the back seat
😂❤❤
And, I'm a joker.....

Thanks for the info. I’ve heard others say that it was referring to the river at night but I didn’t know it was actually black in some places.
Always love it when folks who already know the Doobies get to Black Water. Just like us it gives them such a happy surprise!!
Doobie's are a vibe for sure. Folk Rock....rocks. Southern Rock is the best. Funky dixieland music.
Never fails… Anytime I need a little pick me up, throw on some Shon reactions, and all is right in the world again! I just love the positive vibes you ALWAYS have, and it’s contagious my friend. Thank you 🙏

One of my favorite all time songs! I'm a big city boy with a country heart. Born and raised in NYC (50 years)
Now happily living in Mississippi.
Ol’ Mississippi, she called your name.
70s music is all about the switchups! The Beatles did it in some late 60s songs too but the 70s made it huge. We loved this song back in the day.
Well put Jennifer ❗ Agreed. A great song has SWITCH UPS.

Thank you for listening to my genre. What a good time we had back in the day. This is a great BBQ song.
The switch ups and bridges make this song so interesting and so fun. Glide down the river under the moonlight and dance in the honky tonk. Great song!
I like watching this guy's reactions. He's got life in him, a real positive life vibe.
I think you'd also like China Grove and Long Train Running.
Anyone remember seeing them on What's Happening. I can still remember that episode. Really takes me back. Thanks for the video.
This is the great music I was lucky enough to grow up with. So good to see younger folks hear it for the first time. Classic harmonies, love me some Doobie Bros
Some songs tell a little story and take you to another place. This one makes you come back again and again. Shon, you made this trip special. 🤙🏽
The record version of black water is absolute perfection. Doobies live… maaaaan. So many great songs, so many great musicians, and amazing crowds.
Great reaction to a great tune. These guys have a lot of hit songs. Check out 'Listen To The Music', 'China Grove' or 'Cotton Mouth' next. Cheers.
What a great reaction!! I truly enjoyed watching you discover this song. ❤️✌️
My brothers and I used to sing this, and do the different harmonies...way back in day :)

Great car song...we used to all sing it on car rides...dad did bass, mom tenor...we kids just filled in.

This is the music of my youth. The Doobie Brothers were awesome.
Ah! The old days when musicians could play and master instruments

I had no idea what a “doobie” was either much less that it wasn’t just their last name, lol. I was such a sheltered kid! 😂

Absolute masterpiece!! My favorite Doobie's song!
I like the era's you play. Your all over the place. I love it. I'm 71. Keep it up man.
This is a sweet song and it's uplifting to sing to yourself when you need an emotional pick-me-up.
This was very popular my senior year in 1977, the most popular song, everyone loved it and, of course, the Doobie Brothers.
The finger is also the composer of this song- Pat Simmons. And I jammed with him when we were both in high school in San Jose!
If you had a great stereo system back in the day this was the greatest song to play it was better than any surround sound

My favorite song about the Mississippi River is "Roll On Mississippi" by Charley Pride. Such a nostalgic and peaceful song
Just saw them in concert in July. They still sound great.
when I was in Highschool in the 80s they played this song so much at one point on the radio that I thought it was a new song at first....so good.
I was in some plays in college early 70's , my fellows drama friends😊😢 would meet in the student lounge, put several guarters in the jukebox, and would sing some funky Dixie land over and over again, thanks for bringing back those fun times. 😅
Doogie Brothers....Listen to the music is another great song from them.
Michael Murphy is def a genius but I like this pre-Michael Doobie’s better
Saw these guys in concert and they didn’t disappoint. Oh the memories.
Good choice!
Excellent choice Shon. I look forward to your reaction notifications. Keep up with your open mind. I love me some Doobies!!

Love this song. Wish (as a New Yorker) I could relate to the honky tonked Mississippi moon they talking about. Sounds like heaven.
My teenage music, always loved this song. Living in the south and not being in a hurry, before computers and cell phones! Great times!
Listen to their songs "Long Train Running", "Listen To The Music", "China Grove"
The black water is the Mississippi as it flows down to New Orleans. Street Cars Uptown, Funky Dixieland Music. He's on the River at its Mouth
You will be blown away by Grand Funk Railroad, "Inside Looking Out".

So many good Doobie Brothers songs.
I think you'd like Styx "Suite Madam Blue" "Renegade" & "Mr. Roboto" or Blue Oyster Cult "Godzilla"
The best song for checking your car speakers!
I seen them in Huntsville Alabama last August and my concert tee has this song on it.. great show!
It’s at max volume 👏👏❤️😂
playing with the separate channels, you give those speakers some space apart and this is that down home feel. a different kind of cool.
this is backyard cookout music, the Aunties and them hookin everyone up with the good bbq lol.
