Dress for submersion. Life jacket and wool! Looks fun. Be careful.

Interesting. I also have a spare Mirror rig and want to build a small dinghy round it.

Very interesting. I hope to build a catamaran this summer, but I would like it to be more performant. On the other hand, i give myself a month, so I should be able to make something a little more complex. I saw your second build using plywood, and I think I'll do something in that direction...

I love this type of project. Build an item, in this case, a boat, which is something most people think of as being a luxury item, an image enhancer, something that is thought to require high precision, great skill, and expensive materials; but build it in the most down-and-dirty way imaginable. It is sure to upset many materialists out there. Good idea.

+deezynar Down-and-dirty design-and-build I may have to start a design company with that name.. thanks, Deezynar

Not only wish you luck, but believe in your catamaran and that it will be a big success! How can it not, especially with your Grandfather rooting for you 'from above' and it being outfitted with his very own mast and sails!!! This is so exciting...looking forward to the build (even though you totally lost me on the 'scale downs' and figuring your weight according to their size and ability to keep everything afloat) lol! Gretchen

+thundercloud47 Thanks, Gretchen. Yes, I was a little lost too on the scale weight - I hope I got it right : - )

Unless I'm very mistaken, this should obey the cube law, so the right factor is x^3 because a 1:2 scale model is 1/2 in height, length, and depth, so it weighs 1/8th what the full scale version would.. So if it's a 1:10 scale model that's 0.1^3 or 0.001 or 0.1%. So if you weigh 200 lb, the correct scale weight is 0.2 lb
If you used a weight 1/125th your actual weight, that solves to x = 1/5, or a 1:5 scale model of the full catamaran. So you got it right. Google is a great calculator, and when you want to solve equations, wolframalpha can handle that for you.

You do indeed have a sense of adventure about you. Good luck and I will looking for the build video as well as a successful conclusion with you sailing on the water.

Can't wait to see the build video! I love this type of ingenuity. I also claim the right to be smug at the "boat people" who weren't excited about this project. Good luck!

The use of polyurethane adhesive between the foam and timber is likely to add some strength. Good Luck

Well you need a lunch box so hope you have time to finish it. Can't imagine going to sea on an empty stomach and besides, where would you put your oranges? You'll get scurfy for sure if you don't take oranges or limes.
