You need to measure the response time and precision, speed on the micro-chip and battery consumption go hand by hand and i do like the low-profile and monochrome looks of it (for battery save) Price indeed looks insane for what it is but considering I buy a watch every 10-20 years I pay extra for good quality materials.

Garmin Tacticals large buttons are good, since the purpose it was made for (soldiers), we tend to wear gloves and its much easier to use the buttons compared to many ringy dingy civilian watches. Also the feature for nods use is great.
I think the plastic has not to be such a problem. You have plastic and "plastic" nowadays. It's actually a verry solid plastic and it feels verry durable. Even modern fire arms exist out of, let's say, 50% plastic these days. And they need to whitstand a lot of torture. I had a Suunto Core before. It's from metal and therfore much heavier. But you actually see every scratch on it. And when it drops it actually makes more kinetic impact because of it's more weight, which can lead to more damage. Myself I'm actually verry happy with the material. But I guess a lot of people shall have other thoughts about that. Haha Btw, the solar edition of the 1 already had an updated heart rate sensor. And I believe the non-solar edition of the 1 is not capable of measuring bloodOx. But great video!

Hi Robert. Well yes the Fenix is pricey, but I can assure you it worth every penny you will spend on it. The fenix series is by far my favorite from any brand. And Fenix does include Tactix and Epix as they are only different variation.
It should be pretty similar. Of course the new generation is a bit better in most feature as it's an updated version of the previous one, and the HR sensor work also better.
Fenix 7x is for pro athletes or people with lots of $ to blow. Instinct 2 tracks the same amount pretty much! Edit 5 minutes later: they have a new watch face with bigger "TIME" ! Check it out, so badass dudes. Liked and subscribed too, ty!
i have upgraded my instinct 1 with 2. However the heart monitor on my new instinct 2 shows sometimes over 200 pulses per min during workout which makes all the calcs about readiness etc. that folow these numbers a mess. I am a bit worried about it. Should i give it more time? I have it about three weeks..
Hum. That's a weird one. The HR sensor on the 2 is better than the one. I don't know what to say, what is happening to you seam weird expect if your are going really intensely. But I don't think it's something that time can fix.

Hey man! Thanks for your review! I have some questiones, which I faced with S1: - how do the count your steps? When I got the S1 and used it for a day I noticed it count my steps not consistently: walking for 50-100m and the counter does not react and then, when you stop, it starts to update. Quite strange behavior… (I still have my vivo smart HR+ and ghey are super precise in that case) - in S1, when you need to use a stopwatch, you will not be able to minimize it to run at the background, so to see main screen or do something else you need to stop it.. how S2 acts in this case? Because of these 2 viered things I returned S1 back. Overall, S1 is the most comfortable watches. You basically do not feel it at all on your wrist. At the same time for some tuff activity I have casio mudmasters, but was looking for watches, which can track my activity for sport reasons and be handy in wild nature environment.

Thank you so much for this review! On the backlight issue, for what it’s worth, I think that’s just a physics thing when you backlight a piece of glass like that, with that kind of display. I think it’s largely just the way that glass refracts light. I have a Suunto Observer from 20 years ago, which I consider to be a great watch, and it does the same thing. I had that with Fossil watches I owned too. I’ve just subconsciously always looked straight at the watch when illuminated and it never bothered me beyond that, but thanks for pointing it out. I’d be interested to know if all of Garmin’s other watches eliminated that behavior. Maybe the different screen types don’t have that same behavior.
Hi David. It's really about the side they put it. I've heard that the isue is only on the tactical model. Others are fine. It is definitively normal, but that would not happen if they reversed the glass.
Never used a "smart watch" before but looking for a outdoors ABC watch. Would prefer not to link anything to my phone tbh and pondering between this or a protrek. Are Garmins or these models usable without linking to phones? Also the 1st gen here looks way more legiable than the newer..
Hi Johny. Yes you can use it without a phone. The only downside I can see is that you won't have weather data on the watch. And if you want to sync your GPS activity, you will need to connect it to your computer. Finally, about the screen, you have to know that the newer model is the solar one and the old one not. This must be the difference about the clarity of the screen.
Most welcome. I didn't tried amazfit yet. I think I have one coming in soon but I'm pretty sure they are not really comparable. In my head the instinct is a tool and amazfit look to me like a toy.
It's cute because even for Fenix 7, the weak break points are made of plastic. Just because they stuck a metal bezel on top doesn't make it any more resilient from breakage, of which, after a hard fall, you will have where the pin enters for strap. There is hardly ever a fall where the watch hits front bezel first.

Both look very clear but you might be right that the first model was more clear. But it might be an unfair comparaison as I think the solar panel is built in the screen. The first model I show is not solar.
Not sure why you would do a side-by-side comparison of the Instinct vs. Instinct 2 Tactical, especially when comparing color options, stealth mode, and especially price. The regular Instinct and regular Instinct 2 were never meant for stealth mode. Either do the tactical 1 vs tactical 2 or non tactical on both. Kinda like comparing a base pickup from the model year vs a top of the line trim of this year's model. Don't get me wrong, the video was informative to a point, but next time try comparing more comparably equipped models.
imo the instinct 2 got a lot of new specs, in fact i think it is one of the biggest jump from generation to generation in a lot of time in a garmin watch. It has much of the same specs than the fenix 7 but in a old style digital watch, that for me that's the appeal, plus the insane battery life.
As the instinct one was already a very great watch that was also comparable to the fenix series in my opinion. I don't think this is this much an upgrade. Of course it is a great upgrade but just not THIS MUCH. 😉 You will have a better interface, screen, battery and look.

Yes of course. It's the main reason that I use that kind of watch. What I mean by that is that the Fenix series for exemple does look great. I actually have the Garmin Tactix 7 with the titanium band on my wrist. I love it. It's the best sport watch out there in term of fonctionnality, and over that, it does look great. Don't get me wrong the Instinct is a super watch that I do recommend. I just think it does not look good.
@@PascalMarquisUnbox for me how it looks is not so important, it is about 30 grams lighter than the fenix or other high end series, and has almost the same functions. (at half price + quarterly updates as per garmin new policy)
Hard to say. For sure any battery life degrade overtime. But as I test many watches, I pass from one to the other and I hardly not keep a watch more than a year, and only few weeks for most of them.
Instinct Rugged all the way. I've had every other smart/fitness watch out there but the Instinct is still one me my favorites. Comes down to the 5X saphire and the Instinct. I daily, bike and walk with the Instinct and hike/adventure with the 5X.
Personally I loved the first edition for all it does at this low price point. However the new model is more expensive by a lot. It is better yes, but I don't think I would spend my money on it if I had the first one. Howerver if you want a real update, and are ready to spend that quantity of money, I would put a bit more money and go for the Fenix.
I guess you pay for the incredibly worry-free durability and battery life. To be fair, the Fenix is about as much plastic except for a thin metal layer on the front face. That said, between this Solar Tactical and the new Garmin Descent G1 Solar, the G1 is the clear winner at close to the same price but with an entire dive computer, sapphire glass, metal screws on the bezel (like the Fenix) and an overall cleaner, less rugged look.

I definitely agree that the Fenix looks a lot better though, no question about that. The Descent G1 is easily forgotten among most youtube reviewers since it's clearly aimed towards a diver audience, but the truth is that it's like the more refined Instinct with even better durability and protection, and a more refined look. If the Fenix Sapphire Solar is the deluxe version of the Fenix series, then the G1 is the deluxe version of the Instinct series, if that makes sense. :) It's worth checking out for sure.
But imo paying for Solar doesnt worth it, since who is gonna be disconnected from life for more than 30 days? And charge takes only some minutes. Instinct Tactic 2 its awesome but I will never pay for Solar on a charging smart watch.

It adds about 3%/hour on a sunny April day in Sweden, so theoretically 25% of charging per day if on vacation and all you do is relaxing in the sun. To me, it's an amazing value-add, but I can agree that it's a bit gimmicky. To your point, it probably takes less than a minute to charge as much as it charges in the sun in an hour. The only use case where I could see this thing being legitimately useful is of you're doing an ultra marathon.
Oups. Did I forget it. It's just 3 little feature. 1. Kill switch to quickly reset your watch. 2. Nigh vision is optimized for night lenses (never tried it) 3. There is also a ''silence mode'' to avoir being detectable. That's it. 😉
The technical therm use by Garmin is fiber-reinforced polymer. Witch could technically be plastic. But maybe I'm wrong. Anyway what I was meaning by this is that you pay a lot of money for a watch that you can put in the hand of anybody, and by looking at it and touching it, anybody would tell it's plastic.
Seems like Europeans ain't big on the "tactical" branding. Tactical version of both on sale in Europe right now Instinct 1 Solar for 200€ Instinct 2 Solar for 300€. All the colorful, non-tactical, versions cost like 100-200€ more, the brighter the color the more expensive lol
For those who don't have either...DO NOT BUY THE instinct 1. It's updates are shit now...I've owned it for like 2 years or so and it was great up until like 3 months ago with update 17.50
@@PascalMarquisUnbox bugged altimeter and barometer. They no longer read correctly and other weird glitches.. it's a whole thing on garmin forums. And setting them to manual or recalibration doesn't work everything was good until that update went live

The mapping is a useless feature on the Fenix, including ski maps, golf courses and aviation navigation. They are cheap clunky gimmicks. Not worth the upgrade as I went from Fenix 6x pro and went to this one. Much better👍

Garmin made pretty good plastic. The instinc feal very solid. In my opinion the titanium on the fenix is mostly esthetic.

Ahah! Thank you Fabricio! On a very tight budget I would go for the instinct 1 base model. Fantastic watch and great price. I don't think any other watch can give you this much for so few money.
The screen on the new model looks less clear. Its much sharper on the old model, at least from looking just the video
Both look very clear but you might be right that the first model was more clear. But it might be an unfair comparaison as I think the solar panel is built in the screen. The first model I show is not solar.

Not sure why you would do a side-by-side comparison of the Instinct vs. Instinct 2 Tactical, especially when comparing color options, stealth mode, and especially price. The regular Instinct and regular Instinct 2 were never meant for stealth mode. Either do the tactical 1 vs tactical 2 or non tactical on both. Kinda like comparing a base pickup from the model year vs a top of the line trim of this year's model. Don't get me wrong, the video was informative to a point, but next time try comparing more comparably equipped models.
Well it's the very same watch with just more military option on it. I just personally wanted that model so I picked that one.

imo the instinct 2 got a lot of new specs, in fact i think it is one of the biggest jump from generation to generation in a lot of time in a garmin watch. It has much of the same specs than the fenix 7 but in a old style digital watch, that for me that's the appeal, plus the insane battery life.
As the instinct one was already a very great watch that was also comparable to the fenix series in my opinion. I don't think this is this much an upgrade. Of course it is a great upgrade but just not THIS MUCH. 😉 You will have a better interface, screen, battery and look.

I have no problems with the buttons , press anywhere, they work, plus the 2 just got a huge firmware update, not to mention connect iq. Who cares if you think it's ugly? It's not a fashion watch.
Some cares about have something that look good on their watch...

Yes of course. It's the main reason that I use that kind of watch. What I mean by that is that the Fenix series for exemple does look great. I actually have the Garmin Tactix 7 with the titanium band on my wrist. I love it. It's the best sport watch out there in term of fonctionnality, and over that, it does look great.
Don't get me wrong the Instinct is a super watch that I do recommend. I just think it does not look good.
@@PascalMarquisUnbox for me how it looks is not so important, it is about 30 grams lighter than the fenix or other high end series, and has almost the same functions. (at half price + quarterly updates as per garmin new policy)
How much is the life of this watch couple of years or 4 to 5 yrs or more ?
Hard to say. For sure any battery life degrade overtime. But as I test many watches, I pass from one to the other and I hardly not keep a watch more than a year, and only few weeks for most of them.
Instinct Rugged all the way. I've had every other smart/fitness watch out there but the Instinct is still one me my favorites. Comes down to the 5X saphire and the Instinct.
I daily, bike and walk with the Instinct and hike/adventure with the 5X.
So for a couple hundred bucks, is it worth the upgrade. Garmin vs Garmin 2
Personally I loved the first edition for all it does at this low price point. However the new model is more expensive by a lot. It is better yes, but I don't think I would spend my money on it if I had the first one. Howerver if you want a real update, and are ready to spend that quantity of money, I would put a bit more money and go for the Fenix.
Thanks for the note on the buttons! I some times operate those two buttons blindly (Knowing what to press). The 2S does not have this issue!
I guess you pay for the incredibly worry-free durability and battery life. To be fair, the Fenix is about as much plastic except for a thin metal layer on the front face. That said, between this Solar Tactical and the new Garmin Descent G1 Solar, the G1 is the clear winner at close to the same price but with an entire dive computer, sapphire glass, metal screws on the bezel (like the Fenix) and an overall cleaner, less rugged look.
Hi David. Thank you for your comment. Interesting point of view about the the descent. My Fenix watches does only have plastic on the side. Front and back are metal.
@@PascalMarquisUnbox Yes, my point was more that the metal used in the Fenix is more for show than for function. The Instinct is just as durable. I definitely agree that the Fenix looks a lot better though, no question about that. The Descent G1 is easily forgotten among most youtube reviewers since it's clearly aimed towards a diver audience, but the truth is that it's like the more refined Instinct with even better durability and protection, and a more refined look. If the Fenix Sapphire Solar is the deluxe version of the Fenix series, then the G1 is the deluxe version of the Instinct series, if that makes sense. :) It's worth checking out for sure.
But imo paying for Solar doesnt worth it, since who is gonna be disconnected from life for more than 30 days? And charge takes only some minutes.
Instinct Tactic 2 its awesome but I will never pay for Solar on a charging smart watch.
@@carzoparazzo9698 Got the Descent G1 Solar and not looking back. It's awesome. It adds about 3%/hour on a sunny April day in Sweden, so theoretically 25% of charging per day if on vacation and all you do is relaxing in the sun. To me, it's an amazing value-add, but I can agree that it's a bit gimmicky. To your point, it probably takes less than a minute to charge as much as it charges in the sun in an hour. The only use case where I could see this thing being legitimately useful is of you're doing an ultra marathon.

Witch could technically be plastic. But maybe I'm wrong. Anyway what I was meaning by this is that you pay a lot of money for a watch that you can put in the hand of anybody, and by looking at it and touching it, anybody would tell it's plastic.
Seems like Europeans ain't big on the "tactical" branding. Tactical version of both on sale in Europe right now Instinct 1 Solar for 200€ Instinct 2 Solar for 300€.
All the colorful, non-tactical, versions cost like 100-200€ more, the brighter the color the more expensive lol

For those who don't have either...DO NOT BUY THE instinct 1. It's updates are shit now...I've owned it for like 2 years or so and it was great up until like 3 months ago with update 17.50

@@PascalMarquisUnbox bugged altimeter and barometer. They no longer read correctly and other weird glitches.. it's a whole thing on garmin forums. And setting them to manual or recalibration doesn't work everything was good until that update went live
Oh. I didn't heard of it. Probably a big mistake that they will solve with a quick update.
@@PascalMarquisUnbox They have upgraded to 18.10 a few weeks ago. Although I've never had those issues (I clean the ports regularly), it should fix the issues.
En lo que se refiere al look, el primer Instinct es mejor.
The mapping is a useless feature on the Fenix, including ski maps, golf courses and aviation navigation. They are cheap clunky gimmicks. Not worth the upgrade as I went from Fenix 6x pro and went to this one. Much better👍
Maybe useless to you. I wont go with a watch without it now that I used it. Very pratical for my kind of activity in mountain and bike.

Actually only 16% of people that have watched that video is from the USA. I don't see the point to give the price in a curency that 84% of viewer don't use. Moreover, price do change over time and my video will be online fore many years to come. There is also discount and etc. That's why. 😉

I set minimal ads because I don't want them to be disturbing. That being said, if you don't like ads, you can do just as I do and get TH-cam Premium.
Doing these kind of videos is my only revenue stream, plus I have to buy those watch to make it, so if you don't pay or don't watch ads, I can't put thoses videos online, pay for the roof over my head and fill up my fridge.

Man, you "Product viewers" on YT... are you kind of blind??? Whats extremly obvious, but not mentioned: The Instinct 2 has much less CONTRAST on its DISPLAY than the old Instinct!! Don´t you see? Why don´t you mention? Instinct 2 has greyish display, thats a big regression in respect of reading it under low light conditions. You didn´t notice after 6 days??? But yeah, lets talk about buttons have another form and talk about all the minor design changes, talk, talk... very superficial indeed :-)
