    I have had my watch for a little over a year now, but I have trouble with all of the technical stuff and have done no more than just use it as a watch. I did have my son do some optimizing for me and help with the solar vs charging. I've been trying to learn more about it and catching every YT on it that I can find so I was surprised to recognize you and pulled up your playlist to see what else I have seen of yours - Oh! I very much enjoyed the explanation of how to fit a backpack! I also really liked that you made a donation to pay for the watch, very good of Garmin to send the 0 invoice too! Subscribed!

    My priority is a little different in that the navigation was a key thing for me (my last two hikes were in heavily wooded areas with no line of sight to any landmark). I can say that the navigation function, once I got experience with it, works very well

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Theron, Yes it does if one reads the manual and knows how navigation without gps but with a compass and map work. That is why I don't go in to it. I don't want people to just go out with a watch and trust it will get them everywhere and back home too. It is a device with a battery.... I hope you understand🙏. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Hello! I have to reiterate myself. I have had the Garmin Instinct solar for a year now believe it is still a very relevant watch and will be for a long time. I don’t do extreme sports. I’m just a walker and a hiker. Garmin still does software updates and the solar function gives me two weeks ( maybe a day short in the winter). I wouldn’t mind a larger screen and a topo map, but those are not necessary.

      instinct 1 has a flawed altimeter port placement, you cannot get accurate elevation data and ascent/descent data on any tracked activity. instinct 2 moved these ports to a place where this does not happen. Such an irritating flaw never acknowledged by garmin

      @Outdoorguru I'm particularly interested in seeing how much more efficient the new solar captor is vs the old garmin instinct solar one ... with the old instinct solar one that I have own before resell it I have concluded that the solar was very inefficient to give me more days of usability in smartwatch or gps mode...
      I curently own a Casio Rangeman Gpr-b1000-1 and on that one the solar is not a gimmick and really recharge the watch fast when its on my wrist...

    Amazing video. I'm thinking to buy this watch to replace my old Casio Protrek PRW-3000. Would you know if is there any significant difference between the 40mm version against the 45mm which seems the version you reviewed. I know the small version doesn't have the tactical model, but I don't think Tactical features are important to my use. I'm asking because I imagine the small version would have small solar panel which might be even more inefficient than the large one. I'm wondering if it worth to go to solar version or not. Thanks and again very good video about the watch.

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi,
      Sorry for my late reply, but I am traveling at the moment. Why the smaller one? The 45mm fits fine on my small wrist. Solar on the 40mm is I guess a bit less efficient. If you can charge regularly maybe you don't even need solar. And thanks for your kind words.

      @@outdoorcinema7 instinct has a huge plastic bezel protecting the screen. I bought mine soon after it was released, wear it daily without taking much care and it’s still scratch-free. I feel sapphire will only make it more expensive and make screen less contrasty. Instinct2 solar is expensive enough as it is, adding sapphire will push it info fenix territory

    Outstanding review! I still have some very detailed questions that I hope someone can answer. I care a lot about battery life and simplicity. I basically only want this watch to have bluetooth, GPS, and heart monitor enabled when I go into THAT specific menu. I don’t need it connected to GPS all the time and I would almost NEVER need bluetooth connection to my phone except for maybe firmware updates? I also don’t need it recording my heart rate all the time. I know it has the stealth mode, but that seems to be kind of a nuclear approach for disabling GPS and bluetooth. What would be perfect for me would to have bluetooth disabled all the time. Then the GPS only come on when I wanted to check altitude, location, or update the time, then shut off when I left that menu item. Same goes for heart rate and oxygen. Is something like that possible? Also, can you set an alarm based off sunrise and sunset. Such as having the watch alarm go off 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset? AND one last thing, 90% of the features this watch has, I will never use. Anyway to disable or hide menus I don’t need? Be really cool if it did. If there is anyone out there who ones this watch and can answer some of these questions. I THANK YOU!

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chris, Without even trying to be in anyway rude.... is there a reason why you want this? For the battery life it not an issue. Bluetooth connection can be switched of. I'm sure I would get into the habit of not forgetting it, but I was thinking if BT, GPS and the heart sensor were off 99% of the time, then maybe solar might be enough to keep it going indefinitely.

    49:20 this is not a small detail, doesn't matter how clean you keep the opening for the baro sensor, it is fucked if you go for a run or a bike or ANYTHING due to the location. INstinct 2 has changed this. How garmin released this on a production device blows my mind. All you needed to do is to go for ONE run and you would see this MASSIVE issue.

    The best thing about this thing is that it makes a good 1moa target @ 200 yards.
    I have no interest in spending 2 hours reading a 66 page manual just to figure out how to find the screen that shows you what the time is.
    Every single time my jacket sleeve touches one of the buttons, I have to spend an hour reading the useless manual.
    Apparently there's a button somewhere, somehow that locks the screen.
    If I spend an hour searching the manual, I can figure out how to lock it, but unfortunately my jacket sleeve can unlock it and send it to some random page with no trouble.
    Then, well, the user interface is so nonsensical that without another hour long study session, you'll never figure out how to find the f@cking clock again! After using this thing for a few months, I hope Garmin gets hit by an asteroid!

      Hi Ken, I am sorry to read this but I have no clue what you are what are talking about. I have the watch now for quite a while, I wear different type of jackets and this never happened to me. But.... without manual: Under system settings->Auto-lock set to Off. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😄. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

    • @kensmith174

      @@OutdoorguruGearReviews
      I did that the first time it happened. Jacket sleeves unlock it as well.
      As I mentioned in the .middle of my anger fueled rant, I did read the manual, set the buttons to lock, and referred back to it many times. Even with the buttons "locked", apparently the right button gets pressed by sleeves, or by my hand wheel lifting something heavy, and unlocks it
      I just meant that the software should have been intuitive enough that I didn't need to keep reading a manual.
      Even without a jacket on, just lifting something results in the right side buttons being pressed, and It ends up un-locked and on some random screen, whereas I have to spend time with the non-intuitive interface figuring out how to go back to the watch screen.
      A quick Google search indicates that it's a common problem. The recommended solution seems to be "wear it higher on your wrist"🤣, and "tighter, so it doesn't slip closer to your wrist".. or, "stop lifting stuff while wearing the watch" 🤔

    • @OutdoorguruGearReviews
      @OutdoorguruGearReviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ken, I am sorry to read this. I tried with my watch and the lower right starts the stopwatch when I press longer and the upper one the GPS. If I press it short I get the activity. Just like it should. I am really surprised that more people have this issue but I understand how irritating this must be. The solution in your last sentence... Not real solutions. I'll try to ask Garmin. What firmware are you using and your watch is the same as reviewed?

    • @kensmith174
      @kensmith174 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OutdoorguruGearReviews
      Actually, I was able to resolve the issue yesterday. I found the solution in a TH-cam video, not the manual.
      I was able to change the unlock key so that it requires holding the GPS and ABC buttons simultaneously. As a result, the watch is now working as it should.
