I really like it, so much value in this package. Smart done of Opel to keep it robust and simple, yet a nice design. Thank You for a good review, Thomas and Lea.
In my country the original Isuzu engine Frontera is still driven by off road entusiasts, hunters, forest patrols and services and they still run like new. This thing cannot cross the speed bump in front of lidl...
Just need to see the Euro NCAP score, but it looks like the best offering from Opel/Vauxhall for some time. And here in the UK it's the same price for hybrid or electric, with the short-range battery at least. Will be interesting to see how the Citroën and Fiat versions of the car compare.
There’s a larger battery EV version coming next year, should be similar to the r4/r5 on range. Personally I like the utilitarian nature of this, kinda missing from the r4 but the prices will be pretty similar. The R4 looks like a better resolved car though. But yes to white steelies, yes to real heater controls and yes to smartphone holders instead of glitchy ‘infotainment’ systems. Good effort from Opel.
Government subsidies and government fleet sales. Money from Germany and UK for the Opel, France for C3. And a hope some pensioner is still attached to the brand.
You choose based on the brand. Some people prefer the idea of owing a Citroen for its French weirdness, others prefer the Opel for it ‘germanness’. Also there are some differences in the interior; aircoss has this mini heads-up display and this has a screen, the seats are different also.
Stellantis has the custom of building the same car (with minor design changes) but with different badges, in order to attract different customers. Is cheaper because they don’t have to develop a new car from scratch. Stellantis has many brands and building different cars for each brand would mean huge costs in R&D
Lots of people buy opel based on nostalgia and memory of good old times. They used to make awesome cars like Vectra, Omega but now it is pile of s... badly mixed metal, plastic, glass and rubber
@@Whatshisname346 But is Citroën French enough or Opel/Vauxhall German/British enough to attract such different customers? Is it worth the effort to manufacture two models so similar in price and design in the same market? Won't they cannibalize each other? At least Peugeot and DS are quite different from the rest, even in behavior and price, aiming to very different kinds of people, but with the new models from citroen and opel, i think is more aiming low price than design, quality or behavior
Doesn't matter how good or bad the car is. Some model names should just remain untouchable, segment-assigned. They've done it before with Zafira, now with Frontera. Model name won't sell the car. Frontera was a fairly decent off-roader. SUV should not get it's name. Just as Zafira name should not be 'recycled' in a completely different car, than the smartly designed mini van.
I don't understand why Thomas stopped reviewing Citroën cars...the Frontera shares the same platform with the new C3 and c3 aircross. I would like to see a meticulous review from the new C3, but i guess that won't happen
Sure that would be interesting. Citroen forgot about us since their nice PR spokesperson switched to Nissan. We tried to build up new relations and the moment that worked, their PR spokesperson switched to Hyundai. I m happy to do Citroen like all other brands
I have seen a couple of reviews of the full EV version so it was useful to see this hybrid review, thank you. Opel/Vauxhall really have hit the right price points - €24-30k depending on what you specify. It is also, like the Dacia, an object lesson on what you really do and do not need in an everyday car. I would be perfectly happy without the infotainment system and just the phone holder. So this could do a job as a runabout in our household. We really need some sort of fairly credible four wheel drive so we would probably pay for some off road capability. Of the recent launches I quite like the look of the Suzuki Vitara but more money.
i dont, not Duster not this then MG ZS hybrid which looks much better then Duster inside and outside and its cheaper!!Duster looks like some tractor inside with that crappy cheap hard plastic and ugly interior
@vangelescu reliability of MG cars are higher then of this Opel or Duster crap !!i dont see that peoples cimplain and many of MG buyers are taxi ones and they have pretty high mileage yearly!!after all MG have 7 years warranty and i dont see that for Opel or Dacia crap which use Renault crap engines
@@Mr11ESSE111 MG is last in the reliability indexes of cars, you can check yourself. They have indeed 7 years warranty (same as Dacia) but they break a lot apparently. No idea about Opel but Dacia was in one year on the second place behind Lexus. The reason for this is that they mostly use tried and proven Renault parts and the cars have less electronic components than the competition
24k for something like that - insane. Especially if you take a look at other possible options. It's so cheap and they don't try to hide it (like Dacia or MG). When Stellantis released C3 with very attractive price I was quite positive about it. It's not like I would buy it but they made truly affordable car with starting price tag (15k and 19k for c3 aircross which is a twin for "frontera"). As I was thinking that Stellantis draw good conclusions but bad corpo habits took over again. "Why not put frontera sign on our aircross and offer for higher price". Corpos are meant to earn money but if you put higher price tag on something like that at least use stainless steel allen bolts in visible places. I really like autogefuehl reviews but this whole review is like "oh it's bad but at this price point what would you expect". I would expect better materials and not tin can feeling OR lower price. Call me crazy, but compare this to mid trim MG ZS Hybrid or Dacia Extreme with 1.2 which are almost at the same price point as "frontera".
They are so ashamed of 'puretech' name that they changed the engine naming. But that will not change my lack of trust to this engine family untill I see most of the units reaching 200k km without technical problems. They changed the timing belt to chain - true. Knowing their previous timing chain failures in 1.6 petrol and 1.5 diesel I would just say the new issues will replace the old ones, that's all.
@@marciniwinski1330 The 1.6 engine was designed by BMW, now completely rebuilt by Opel who had no problems with it on their engines, and therefore it is reasonable that the BMW problems are now gone.
i had a 1.2 peugeot as a loaner and it sounded so bad, i thought it was going to blow up when i revved it, i don't know if it had problems or if it's just like that but it was a pretty new car.
I would get this over the Duster if I didn't need the 4wd system the Duster has. Frontera has more space and it seems to be available also in 7 seat configuration.
Nice review but I feel it does not compete with the Duster because it has no 4x4 option but you can buy it with an electric engine while the Duster only has hybrid engine which is a 4 cilinder engine compared to Frontera's 3 cilinder engine. I am not sure how reliable is the Puretech engine I know it had big issues with the wet belt (it's all over the internet) and I know this engine has a chain now however you can never know if it will develop the same problems or not. I feel like Opel missed a chance with the Frontera name to actually make a Duster challenger. When you say Frontera you think about a rugged car that can go anywhere and this is nowhere near that. Think about the Frontera name it's close to "Frontier" which is like a border between 2 different places - on and offroad and they are offering a car without 4WD.
One thing, I assume the 1.2 petrol engine is the unit that's used in the Mokka and many others. Apparently it has a bad name in terms of reliability. It was developed by PSA group about 2012. From what I read, it develops terrible oil burning problems after 30k miles. I think it's a wet belt affair. It's hard to believe at this day and age that such companies don't do long term testing before bringing something to market.
Complaints about this car are ridiculous. Including when Leah says she does regard it as a cheap car … she is sitting in the front seat looking at what is actually a very nice dashboard with nice displays, and Thomas already went into some detail about how nice the seats are, and also how quiet the car is etc., so where are the “cheap” feelings coming from (almost certainly because you already knew the price and the badge). Myself I'm not in the market for a car like this, but if we accept all that Thomas said in the review (great review as always), then this is a nice inexpensive practical and really quite stylish and sophisticated small SUV (it's practically the same size as a Volvo XC40 … and I don't hear many credible complaints about that not being a compact "SUV").
Thanks! We presented pros and cons, and the price performance is good. However it still feels different than a BMW X1 for double or triple the price, no surprise to say that. Do u feel its a budget car? Yea definitely! Is that still ok? Yea definitely!
@@autogefuehl Well what you actually asked Lea, was "do you feell this is a very very cheap budget car" and she she says Yes, she did have that impression of the car. Of course it's not going to be as luxurious inside as most BMW's, Mercedes, or Audi's, or while we are taking that extreme why not compare it to a Rolls Royce! ... but in your review it was clear that you yourself did not think this car felt, looked or gave you the impression from the instruments, the seating, the noise levels etc. as a product that is quote "very, very cheap budget". I have zero connection to Opel or Vauxhall, but juding from the review I think the refinemnet here impressed you as better than expected from the price and compared to the similarly low cost competition. But by the way - personally I'd like to see more input from Lea .... becasue like most male car enthiasts I care about what the women in our lives think of the car - do they like it as a place to sit in, to drive, to use etc., ... what do they like about it and what don't they like about it (incliding the price LoL!)
I've watched the review of the new BMW X3 on another channel and if they didn't tell you it was a BMW or covered up the recognisable badge and the front grille, it could easily be a "cheap car" from a so-called non-premium brand. Such is the way things are going to keep costs down. I don't know whether cars are just getting too big to produce economically, companies too greedy or whether expectations have reached a peak. Something has got to give and it's starting to show fast.
Dacia Duster 3 arată mult mai bine din orice punct de vedere! Și capacitățile off road sunt net superioare față de noul Frontera. Nu există comparație că nu le-aș pune în aceeași clasă. ✅️
Just as big a slap in the face as the Mustang Mach e and Capri. The reality is that most SUV owners don't want or care about 4wd. That includes me as I drive a 2wd yeti.
Here's something a bit obscure that could use an in-dept review: Ssangyong Korando. The only European journalist I've seen review it thoroughly is JayEmm, and since he is often snobby, I though it would be nice to hear a fair assesment. And despite its age, it could still be a more sensible car than whatever the new Frontera and Grandland are supposed to be.
Before 2020 this would be a great 17-19k car, but adjusted for today's market it's a reasonable price. And i like it's approach to design especially that two-tone paint. Sadly cars in Europe nowadays don't sell that strongly due to our flattering income
There won't be too many people cross-shoping the Duster with this one. The Duster is an off-roader designed to be a workhorse and is quite capable for the money. This Frontera can't off-road anywhere close to the Duster. It's a city people carrier. An MPV but not called MPV because that doesn't sound cool. Looks very similar to a Mercedes GLB in proportions.
@@autogefuehl Most SUV customers rarely if ever use their SUV for anything a Golf can't do. People buy vehicles based on image, first and foremost. Pragmatism comes 2nd, at best.
Opel should think about a 4X4 version like the siblings Avenger or Junior. Also to lower the starting price I think a manual transmission should be offered as well. The person who look for an affordable car usually doesn’t care about the automatic. A mild hybrid diesel would be also a nice option. For the rest is clear that is a cheap car with cheap interiors. The duster looks better to me.
Great review! Dacia Duster has higher ground clearance and 4wd and is cheaper, but knowing Opel, I assume that Opel is a higher quality and more comfortable car and a nicer interior and an automatic with good driving characteristics! Frontera has interesting rims with higher tires! Hybrid 136 e-DCS6, the price of this model in Estonia starts at 24,290 euros.
There are also high-quality and cheaper Suzukis. Both are very good, but the 1.4 is faster and at 120km/h is very economical and accelerates very well (much better than in the technical data) and the 2wd has a very good turning radius and is a light car (1180kg.). Here they are: Suzuki Vitara MY25 1.5,75 kW, GL+ automatic hybrid (petrol + electricity) SUV four-wheel drive 27,980 € And: Suzuki Vitara MY25 1.4, 95 kW, GL+ manual petrol Mild hybrid 21,980 €
Dacia looks just amazing for his money, this looks cheap and budget. Is it so difficult to understand that cheap vehicles needs a good design to sell them like hot cakes
This is of course a good comparison, they are of the same quality. But Dacia remains cheaper by 5000 euros and for many it is perhaps more beautiful both in terms of exterior design and interior design.
Since the Dacia enthusiasts feel threatened and intimidated, one can only conclude that this must be very good, otherwise they wouldn't be so upset about a new competitor.
Good road test as usual. Informative. This vehicle size seems like a better buy than the e/C3 version, with a decent enough boot and much better leg room, yet still not TOO expensive. A good budget family car, though there seems to be a lot of haters of the 1.2 Stellantis engine here. Is it really that bad? Couple of questions, more related to the EV version. Does it have a roof load rating? And curious why the tow rating of the Aircross version is only 350kg versus the eC3 version which is 550kg. According to specs I've seen, both cars are within 50kgs of weight with each other, so curious why the aircross version has a 200kg less tow rating? In EV at least. I know Im talking Citroen here rather than Opel, but they are the same vehicle. But good road test and the boot measurements and layout protocol is very good. That parcel shelf is so impractical. Dacia MCV II is one that other manufacturers should copy. A soft cover sprung roller retractor which is quite small when retracted and fits easily in passenger footwell when seats are dropped. And easy to deploy. Now you are succeeding in your campaign to bring back buttons, can you start a campaign for bigger indicator lenses. I find the small lights on a lot of modern cars very hard to see in bright sunlight. Bigger lenses please, Form over function please.😄
Steel wheels look alright! But I’m not too keen on the interior, shockingly there are shades and reminders of the last Vauxhall Vectra in terms of design

@autogefuehl Happy new year!!! That is sad...Dacia Duster, suzuki Jimny. Small cheap and with AWD ..the people love this cars.. Opel must think the awd version.
Its a marketing thing when trying to compare this to a Duster. I know no one in their right mind will turn to French company when shopping for off roaders. From the perspective of family car buyers, these French made were some of the most budget friendly choices. The real competitors to opel/vaushall were all those Stellantis brand rebadges. Usually C3 Aircross was always the most competitively priced variant. In some other countries that did not go insanely communist electric, even Belingo will out sell this by a big margin.

Get used to manufacturers reusing old car names to something completely new. Renault Scenic for example has nothing to do with the revolutional MPV it originally was. It’s a trend that’s not going away.
The old Frontera was offroad capable, good ground clearance , longitudinal engine it even had 4x4 with low range ( 2H, 4H and 4L modes ) This has none of that, wish they made the car live up to the name or not use it to mislead people.
The car is nice, but it is a rebadged Stellantis and isn't really very rugged. It lacks the 4x4 capability and the reliability of the Duster. It's worth considering, especially if you like the way it looks and the materials. It isn't very inspiring tho. Kind of bland, and you just know in 4 years time it will depreciate like crazy and will start to look like it is falling apart.

Some say, that on a quiet night you can 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳 it depreciating.

I came for the car and I find poetry here.

That was funnier when you first posted it! 😆

If Opel competes against Dacia, what is the objective of the Citroën C3 Aircross? I'm confused about the target audience for these brands.
Long time waiting and coming, back to normal and simple engineering, not shiny marketing crap. We hope this trend stays for good.
Looks like chibi Bronco Sport on those wheels and I love it
Doesn't matter how good or bad the car is.
Totally agree.
I don't understand why Thomas stopped reviewing Citroën cars...the Frontera shares the same platform with the new C3 and c3 aircross. I would like to see a meticulous review from the new C3, but i guess that won't happen
Yes! We want to see both the C3/ë-C3 and C3/ë-C3 Aircross.
Cheers!
I'd take the Duster over this
i dont, not Duster not this then MG ZS hybrid which looks much better then Duster inside and outside and its cheaper!!Duster looks like some tractor inside with that crappy cheap hard plastic and ugly interior
@@Mr11ESSE111 MG is last in the reliability index. Crap cars
New Opel Fronteraun reliable and crapy car! Nothing matches the Duster! 🙂
Good content on the channel well done everyone 👍👍

Can we have a full review of the Grandland? We had the reveal but a full review would be good.
Ok i ll organise!

I'm sorry, but this is not a SUV lmao. It's a small, cute car. Anyone who calls this a SUV is delusional.
It's longer than a Skoda Karoq. Doesn't look it with the small wheels and white roof though.
@@alesvladik2366 no. I’m Dutch.
I personally would choose the Opel. However, in my country it will be a combustion engine only.
The infamous 1.2 PureTech engine. It’s not even a competition.
It's not Puretech. They don't use that name anymore because it's a different, improved engine. Chain driven now, no more wet belt.
@@vaioN250N yeah but they didnt fixed the oil dilution problem so still not great
@@marciniwinski1330 The 1.6 engine was designed by BMW, now completely rebuilt by Opel who had no problems with it on their engines, and therefore it is reasonable that the BMW problems are now gone.
i had a 1.2 peugeot as a loaner and it sounded so bad, i thought it was going to blow up when i revved it, i don't know if it had problems or if it's just like that but it was a pretty new car.
Seems really good in my opinion. Sure it's a bit more expensive than a Duster, but i think it's worth it for the (relatively) more premium drive.
These cars lack a LPG version, I could opt for a Frontera if they did it
I would get this over the Duster if I didn't need the 4wd system the Duster has.
Newer iterations use timing chain
From the B pillar back is straight out of the isuzu mux mk1 design book...
26000€ for 1.2 engine wtf😂
Can't find the white steels in the configurator... :(
Maybe not yet in your market?
Do they still have the engines with the timing belt in the oil?
No the hybrid ones come with a chain
Dacia Duster 3 arată mult mai bine din orice punct de vedere! Și capacitățile off road sunt net superioare față de noul Frontera. Nu există comparație că nu le-aș pune în aceeași clasă. ✅️
What a slap in the face! All Frontera fans must be livid. Not only is this a rebadge is only FWD... Marketing departments need to stop...
they could've at least bothered to take the Alfa Romeo electric rear axle since its a hybrid
@tiagobelo4965 Or actually make a 4x4 and absolutely WIN
Besides the ignition key I see no other similarity with the great and old Frontera.
Well they were crap too

There won't be too many people cross-shoping the Duster with this one. The Duster is an off-roader designed to be a workhorse and is quite capable for the money. This Frontera can't off-road anywhere close to the Duster. It's a city people carrier. An MPV but not called MPV because that doesn't sound cool. Looks very similar to a Mercedes GLB in proportions.
Duster is used offroad yea, but Most customers drive tarmac only
@@autogefuehl Most SUV customers rarely if ever use their SUV for anything a Golf can't do.
Very interesting good quality for the price
Until you mentioned Vauxhall, I thought it was a Citroen e-3!
I would go for the Dacia any day!
Thank you so much! Please recommend / share our channel and our videos 🙏
There are also high-quality and cheaper Suzukis. Both are very good, but the 1.4 is faster and at 120km/h is very economical and accelerates very well (much better than in the technical data) and the 2wd has a very good turning radius and is a light car (1180kg.).
Here they are: Suzuki Vitara MY25 1.5,75 kW, GL+
automatic hybrid (petrol + electricity)
SUV
four-wheel drive
27,980 €
And: Suzuki Vitara MY25 1.4, 95 kW, GL+
manual petrol
Mild hybrid
21,980 €
Opel was a relatively luxury brand in Taiwan when I was little 😂
Dacia looks just amazing for his money, this looks cheap and budget. Is it so difficult to understand that cheap vehicles needs a good design to sell them like hot cakes
This is of course a good comparison, they are of the same quality. But Dacia remains cheaper by 5000 euros and for many it is perhaps more beautiful both in terms of exterior design and interior design.
Depends on spec, in comparable trims the frontera is cheaper actually
Since the Dacia enthusiasts feel threatened and intimidated, one can only conclude that this must be very good, otherwise they wouldn't be so upset about a new competitor.
I like the G Class because of its hinges showing.
Bigger lenses please, Form over function please.😄
thanks! Its C3 Aircross brother
yeah bout these indicators....
Roof load is possible
Steel wheels look alright! But I’m not too keen on the interior, shockingly there are shades and reminders of the last Vauxhall Vectra in terms of design
Poor engine options. Thanks Thomas for your review

I dont think so
@autogefuehl Happy new year!!! That is sad...Dacia Duster, suzuki Jimny. Small cheap and with AWD ..the people love this cars.. Opel must think the awd version.
Happy new year!
Great review, but more driving around corners is necessary

Get used to manufacturers reusing old car names to something completely new. Renault Scenic for example has nothing to do with the revolutional MPV it originally was. It’s a trend that’s not going away.
The cream steel wheels remind me of my 2CV of long ago. Unfortunately so does the performance of the EV version 😂

Take a duster, make it uglier and with cheaper materials, sell it at the same price and call it a competitor, haha what a joke of a car
