I don't care what anyone says about this anime being half assed or apparently trying to meddling in topics like racism and not succeeding. This is without a doubt one of the best anime that came out recently and they did a superb job at conveying the weight of the situation that these drone pilots lived through. It's heartbreaking to think about how it must be to be in their shoes.
People can't be pleased, and racism can't be solved as easily as people think. If there was a solution, someone would've found it. Even if there was, it's probably not easy to implement; hence the world as it is today. I know this anime/story will probably get compared to Vivy or AoT, but no two stories are the same (or there will be copyright issue!). Yet the amount of people eating up and praising shounen anime like MHA or Demon Slayer don't know that the animation make up most of hype. The stories of those anime are very straightforward with little to no twists. Even among those good shounen anime, only a few actually make you think about more than what it's telling. Furthermore, Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece were the ones to start the big shounen genre hype. Yet 86 is one among those "half-assed, sensitive racism, controversial" anime people bash for "trying to copy" some other anime. I think to each their own, but this 86 anime adaptation was honestly very well done, probably the best 11-episode anime I've ever seen that makes me want to know how it's going to move forward.

But more simply tribalism instinct also drives classism, and all group vs group fights and can break apart everyone from the same ethnic group into waring camps. As it's genetic it must always be watched for and educated against.
It's not like racism can't be solved, the issue lay in the fact how in modern times certain people figured out how racism can be very beneficial if used in self-rightousness
What people dont get is that the goal is not to talk or teach about racism. It doesnt need to be a documentary for racism. It is just a plot point that makes the story interesting. Everything would have been 100 times less interesting if the 86 were a normal military group imo.
I didn’t catch this the first time around but that’s the first time Lena saw any of Spearheads faces. Only after they were dead and leaving their last words for her to MAYBE find. Christ this series was brutal.
I just noticed too when she's standing on the train tracks and the letter saying one day she'll make it to their "final destination", in the last episode of the season has her finally meeting up with the other 5, all standing together on train tracks as she finally caught up to them.
Should watch Clannad as well as the after story season. You don't know how brutal Anime can get. A treasure lost to time, and there is no violence in it...just reality... It's common to lose loved one's in war, Gundam prepared me for this, but... What about a regular high school slice of life? how can death and loss be handled in that!?
A-1 Pictures decerve praise for their work on this series, they did a fantastic show, just finished Volume 7 and can't wait to see future arcs animated by them with the quality volume 1 got
Same here! The LN is great, but this adaptation went beyond what I've seen of others, it felt even better than reading Volume 1 which is a high order as that volume pretty much is a full story on itself.
Given 2 years. There is now a more positive reception to the anime and I'm glad. It deserves praise for the cinematography, framing and decisive decisions to show certain perspectives without a break!
It's a republic, not a kingdom. Part of the point of the series is that even democratic nations can end up throwing marginalized groups under the bus if enough of the population looks the other way.

This is the first time in years that an anime has made me feel the void like this after a watch through.... this anime hit me in a way that I didn't expect and haven't felt like in a long long time. The last time I felt this was from Gurren Lagaan. I have to say that if there was an anime out there that was specifically tuned to hit every possible thing I love about anime and specifically the mecha and real robots genre, it would be this anime. The visuals, characters, story, and especially the music of Hiroyuki Sawano, it's all I really ever wanted from a solid anime in the genre that isn't a Gundam show. 86 gave me what I wish could have been delivered in Iron blooded orphans story-wise in a more clear and concise package, delivering everything it wants to in an 11 episode season without all the BS or any time wasted.
Probably my favorite anime of the year and maybe of all time behind shield hero, it really got me into the story side of anime, the show is serious the whole way through. When you think your going to get some comic relief scene you don’t and any time during battle when the characters loose their edge they die, I absolutely loved the show and hope we get a season 3.
They really are, but I argue that this anime is a great adaptation on its own. Many people don't even know that we are still in Volume 1, which I argue this is a superior version to the original. If they continue like this there won't be a need for reading the LN 😅

Yk, there are some anime that people intentionally and willingly never watch again, not because it's bad or it's a headache to watch, but because it's so great that they know they will cry over and over again no matter how many times they watch, no matter how good of an ending an anime have it'll still make them cry their hearts out, this is one of those great masterpiece anime, and I'm one of those people who just can't watch this again because of the emotions it have in it 😭😊😭😊😭😊 I even cried again watching this video 😢
The one thing i can say about how the plot was handled in this anime was they dont play down the deaths, yet dont let that stagnate the pace of the story. Yes the death hurts, but the struck the right balance in how they make us care for each character and then axing them right before we get too attached.
See, I dont know if the 2nd cour will necessarily finish the story. If it doesnt, it can take a long time for more seasons to come much like how ReZero goes about it

Actually the OST are similar, but different. Lena's OST is Avid (Mix of Japanese and English) and Shin's OST is Voice if Chords (only English)
This anime hits heavy on the emotional roller coaster ride.
I like the sunset view, it looks sad and beautiful.
