It's okay, I probably was slow at the start too but now I get like 80-90 wpm on average because i type a lot when gaming and also talking with friends on discord. My tip on getting a lot of wpm is just try typing a lot naturally. And it's okay if you aren't a fast typer not everyone is the same, also even though I type fast(111 wpm was my best) I personally find fast typing not that useful unless you are working somewhere where you need to type fast. Hope this comment helped :) You can improve if u want to :D

11:16 The reason for making noise as you are typing is that audible feedback confirms whether or not you've struck a key, if you struck a key one or two times, or when you have released the key. Hearing the audible feedback of the keys is vital when typing very fast. That is why IBM Model M keyboards with their mechanical buckling spring keys are highly desired by fast typists.

Great to practice quick reactions, and also typing words and sentences.
Also, for the loud typing, I agree.
For me, if I can't hear it, I don't know if I've properly typed it, causing doubt and double checking, or sometimes keys don't register, etc. Essentially, no confidence in the type.

One issue with "touch" typing that I have not seen addressed by anyone, how do touch typists generally handle special keys such as Home, End and the directional arrow keys. Most likely this is not much of an issue if you are simply typing words to be read but if you are typing code these keys are used very often. I would love to hear what others suggest about this.

    • @codarobo
      @codarobo 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

I tend to get muscle memory for meta keys that I use in writing code frequently if I keep using the same keyboard, personally. It helps if you use a keyboard that has a little dedicated cluster with home/end/pgup/pgdn and you can feel which key you're pressing within that cluster of like 6 keys on their own (commonly seen in 80%/TKL and similar keyboard layouts).

I would also recommend some shortcuts I use super often on windows (I don't have mac so 🤷‍♂️)
    ( *keyboard shortcuts* )
    windows + e > opens file explorer
    windows + d > shows the desktop
ctrl + o > usually to open a file (I use this mainly in my text editor but also works on photoshop etc)
alt + f4 > closes the current window
alt + f4 (when being on the desktop) > gives you a prompt to either turn off / restart / suspend your computer
alt + tab > switches quickly between your opened apps
ctrl + tab (in firefox) > allows you to switch between opened tabs
ctrl + t (in firefox) > open a new tab
f6 (in firefox) > select the search bar to type in your search directly
shift + left (/right) arrow > select text character by character
ctrl + shift + left (/right) arrow > select text word by word
end (/start) + shift > select a whole line of text
ctrl + a > select the whole text in a document
    ( *mouse shortcuts* )
double click on a word to select it
triple click on a word to select the whole line
also, hitting the windows key then typing the name of the app you want to use is much faster than searching for it in any other way

My normal is around 120 w/min, but I've gotten my hand injured (pink has 80% feeling loss as of almost 2 months now with very slow recovery, ring finger same but then around 40% feeling loss) and oh my is it a HASSLE to even try to write anything on a keyboard now. I think if I genuinly tried (which I will do after this comment and update it) I'd be at 40 w/min maybe 60. Oof.
It doesn't surprise me I am normally a fast typer, I am both a classical pianist of 15 years by now (started age 6), a gamer and a hobby-time writer.
    Awesome video my dude
Update: After testing, it turns out I have currently dropped from 120 w/min to a decent 80 w/min. And that with 2 fingers almost not to not at all functioning. Quite proud of myself.

Thank you for this Ali. I learned to touch type in the early 1970's - at commercial college a hood was placed over the typewriter (no computers then!) keyboard so you COULDN'T look at the keys. You make some very good points - even though I've been touch typing for over 40 years, I learned a lot from you, thank you. Back in the day, if you could type you were a god among men. As a male secretary I was a very unusual specimen! Definitely work on that pinkie!! Thanks, kind regards from North Wales

The thing about hitting your keys very hard I believe is all about "feedback". The more feedback you get the more you're certain that you actually produce a sign using that button press. I keep going into the mentality of "did I even press that key?" and only when I look at my screen do I realise that, yes, I did actually press that key. I think the hard button presses stimulate that feeling of completeness.

I started practicing touch typing last month, and my approach is to remember the keys and familiarize my hands first before trying with my eyes peeled to the screen (still stumble at times, but I can type a sentence or two without looking now).
I type words that I can spontaneously think of, so that I can practice both speed and accuracy. I also train with typical letter combos that are a bit awkward for my fingers ( -tion, -sion, -ly, -ce, etc.) by typing random words I can think of that have those combinations. From 38wpm, I can type 49-50wpm now, and most of it done without looking at the keyboard.
