I only found out about this band (by accident) a couple of months ago. I really wish I had found out sooner, and been to see them. Fantastic band, fantastic music. Please re - form for another gig. Music has finally made me smile again....
Great to see the 'sea shanties' back, I love life at sea, songs like this keep me alive, just like the old days, never let the folk stop! On the big grey steel vessels, no rum but still the need for a tune in yer head to get you through!
A new found appreciation for this as it was popularized by Stan Hugill, the last real shantyman. He was a friend and colleague of my grandfather at Outward Bound Aberdyfi!
Please please please please please reform and do another few gigs. I missed out on going to your others, and have to to see it to believe it. Your music is fantastic. Please.
It was funny, I was looking for an updated version of this song...and low and behold...Bellowhead had done it. Just wish it was more pirate shanty sounding =(
+Alexander Moss Yo homie, these be the uncut lyrics: Away down south where the cocks do crow Way down in Florida The gals they all play the old Banjo And we'll roll the woodpile down Rollin', rollin', rollin' the whole world round That brown gal o' mine's down the Georgia line And we'll roll the woodpile down When I was a young man in my prime I'd clench them yeller girls two at a time We'll roll 'em high and we'll roll 'em low We'll heave 'em up and away we'll go It's rouse and bust 'er is the cry A black man's wage is never high Oh, one more heave, and that'll do For we're the bullies to kick her through
+SpaceJesus2098 Or try the Beatles "Run for Your Life" "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man". If you want truly offensive lyrics...
You know, this is an annoying problem. These guys are *quite* good. I very much enjoy this version of the song. But I *love* the original song. This is entirely too clean and bereft of *chipper racism* and *salty prostitution* for my tastes. I suppose if you're going to Disney-fi and clean up a really fun song to sing, this is the way you should probably go about it. No offense Bellowhead. You did a fine job. A really, really, really good job cleaning up this song into something cute. But the dirty sailor version is *WAY* too much fun to sing!
This was a work song on steamboats transporting cotton and sugar in the American Deep South. They needed huge quantities of wood as fuel, so the song helped maintain pace, while passing logs down the line of workers. Would've been interesting if bellowhead had released the un-PC version.
anyone who criticises the approach of Bellowhead really needs to see them live ! I had the pleasure of seeing them on stage on 4 occasions including their farewell tour date at the winding wheel in Chesterfield. a great loss to the live music scene . . ..we shall not see there like again
Wholehearted disagreement. This isn't music for the sake of preservation, it's music for the sake of elation. Just let yourself get into it; forget the nonsense. It's also insanity to suggest brass wouldn't have featured in historic performance of these tunes. We literally have hundreds of accounts describing exactly that.
Folk music always was and indeed should always be in a state of evolution, songs were not written to become a "Cultural Artifact" but to entertain and inform the listener, Malian music became the Blues, became Rock n Roll, similar music became Mento in Jamaica and became Reggae, all with cross pollination and a desire to please the listener, just be glad that the old songs have a new life, though I'm sure some people probably got annoyed 150 years ago when somebody played "John Barlycorn" on the newfangled piano.

There going on tour again next year mate 👍💪
Great to see the 'sea shanties' back, I love life at sea, songs like this keep me alive, just like the old days, never let the folk stop! On the big grey steel vessels, no rum but still the need for a tune in yer head to get you through!
The one time GCSE music gets good 😂😂😂
Infinity Games relatable
You got this for your GCSE?! When I did it we had tunes like rag desh and West Side Story 😂
We just used this paper as a practice before attempting Covid GCSEs next week lol
@@samuelgb7834 Hope you did well!
So true 😂😂
Tremendous showmanship. Look at the audience reaction.
I absolutely love bellowhead they have a brilliant energy, they just need a1 songs like, how, much do I love you.
Saw them in Folkestone tonight ,what a great night
Amazing night at Kew! One of the best live band I have ever seen. I woke up the next morning with a big smile on my face. Thank you Bellowhead!
It's such a perfect song and not a day goes by that it doesn't pop into our heads. :)
Happy music!!! I love this...
99% sure this was filmed in Glasgow at the Celtic Connections on 1st February 2013 - a great evening.
Love this band sorry i missed them live
SEEING BELLOWHEAD IN NOVEMBER AND TO SHOW MY EXCITEMENT I'M TYPING IN CAPITALS
A new found appreciation for this as it was popularized by Stan Hugill, the last real shantyman. He was a friend and colleague of my grandfather at Outward Bound Aberdyfi!
Superb. Wish I had seen this band before they split up. Such happy music...
I saw them last month 🎉
How exciting! We were there and LOVED it. Always love a Bellowhead gig. (And yes I spotted myself in the film. A wee dot !)
Amazing Video! Reminds me how awesome you guys are live - can't wait for Kew Gardens 2013! :D
How long are you gonna keep us waiting guys?
You know you want to.
Back again in November 2022!

Doesn't everyone love Bellowhead
What dynamism! Fantastic!!

Green2Blue _ same , but we never got taught how to answer the question😂like if its our own opinion or not
Avygayle Smith yes, when I sat my first mock I didn't even know that part was going to exist. I have no idea how to write it...

It was funny, I was looking for an updated version of this song...and low and behold...Bellowhead had done it. Just wish it was more pirate shanty sounding =(
Try the dreadnaughts version
Nash Bridges um, more merchant navy than pirates.
Love this!
Epic!
The same happened to me at Sheply! :D

Why would you bin it? You were at the top of your game.
Please please please reform and do another tour. Please.....
I miss bellowhead.
loved the video!
But Lillibulero for next single!
^^
You can be 100% sure. It was indeed at the Glasgow ABC .
damn me sideways, but iv'e never seen a better live band.
Makes me 10%, & the 90% other, Keltic blood bubbly
check Dreadnoughts version for real pirate 140p experience.
Pity the VT editor didn't have their hands tied behind their backs. Too many cameras aren't good.
Not too dissimilar to Pancake Day by Mulligan & O'Haire
Wasn't this a schanty?
Do you mean a sea shanty ???
EnosEverything Not again, Dont make this comment chain nonsense, it happend once, now i have ptsd
if you still care yes although i prefer the proper shandy versions if you know what it i mean
No Cardiff girls in this version?
Santiano does the best version
.erin
I think I like the Dreadnoughts cover better
"cover" but yeah that version is probably a bit more faithful to the origins. I really like the theatrics of Bellow head though
Aren't the original lyrics to this sort of offensive?
SpaceJesus2098 Well it's a traditional folk song from over a 100 years ago, so by today's standard yes.
+Alexander Moss
Yo homie, these be the uncut lyrics:
Away down south where the cocks do crow
Way down in Florida
The gals they all play the old Banjo
And we'll roll the woodpile down
Rollin', rollin', rollin' the whole world round
That brown gal o' mine's down the Georgia line
And we'll roll the woodpile down
When I was a young man in my prime
I'd clench them yeller girls two at a time
We'll roll 'em high and we'll roll 'em low
We'll heave 'em up and away we'll go
It's rouse and bust 'er is the cry
A black man's wage is never high
Oh, one more heave, and that'll do
For we're the bullies to kick her through
***** Ahem, have you ever listened to rap music? The aforementioned lyrics are comparatively mild.
+Sir Church - isn't that an oxymoron?
+SpaceJesus2098 Or try the Beatles "Run for Your Life" "I'd rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man". If you want truly offensive lyrics...

What the fuck is wrong with you?
Dreadnoughts version is better
This was a work song on steamboats transporting cotton and sugar in the American Deep South.
They needed huge quantities of wood as fuel, so the song helped maintain pace, while passing logs down the line of workers.
Would've been interesting if bellowhead had released the un-PC version.
No, I believe they wrote this song.
suicideposter Nope. They arranged it and tidied up the lyrics, but it's been around for a while.
Jack Coleman
Oh, I see.
suicideposter This song is way older than any of us, it's an old sea shanty.
I think it is a good happy cover, but I prefer the santiano cover
To see these old folk tunes modified for the sake of massification via brassification seems more of a subtraction than addition.
+Sir Church WAY TOO MUCH BRASS! This is The Salvation Army meets the Pogues!
Agree with you there
