    You have a beautiful place! I rotate the chicken coop stuff and get yard stuff to a daytime chicken run. The chickens peck. Scratch, and manure it for a couple weeks and I move it to an aging area. It has made all th he difference in how well my farm bedding compost for recycling the next spring.

      That's the best kind of garden, no weeds. We use newspaper and then a foot of grass clippings, then till in at the end of the year.

    JudithB It sure has been nice couple of days but the rain is moving in again. Several weeks ago we dropped a big oak in the center of my gardens to let in more sunshine, and had to pull part of the fence apart. It was kind of cobbled together, so it has been on the list to redo that fence anyway. today we cut conduit into 40" lengths and I got one done! LOL I use a med size hose clamp to clamp the piece of conduit to 6' tposts and attach the wire fencing to it. So far the deer are staying out and the chickens stay in!!!!! Still waiting on the oak log to get cut up for firewood and out of the garden, to replace all the fencing. Next week, I get lumber for the new box beds and already have my hoops and fabric and even some plants!!! Spring is springing!!!

    Get really inexpensive clear plastic drop cloths to put over raised beds in 2 layers. This time of year it may take 30 days depending on how much sun you get. Solarization will kill the weed seeds in soil. I tried this 2 years ago over my raised beds and it really worked. Last year I didn't and was sorry. Love the view on your homestead, it is beautiful!!

    My Mom was a good gardener, even when she lived in an apartment. She crushed egg shells into a milk jug along with some water. Over time it created a powerfully odiferous brew and highly beneficial liquid fertilizer. (:

    • @tannenbaum3444
      @tannenbaum3444 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A regular garden fork will do, a broad fork is awkward to use in a raised bed. Keep amending the soil with compost and organic matter, the soil will loosen more and more every year!

    Put the used egg shells in a hot oven for 5 minutes, or on a tray on the grill and they crush down easily.

    Very nice! On our property we have an area that is going to be very fertile. It's an old abandoned blueberry field where the soil is almost black from the years of natural composting. As I cut the remaining vines down and disc the field it differs from the typical sand/clay soil that we have here In North Florida. Further down our property is an area (roughly 5 acres or so) of a lot of peat. Digging into it looks almost like potting soil that you would buy at a nursery. Unfortunately we are not in a position where we can plant out there until possibly next year, but looking forward to doing so.

    My grandmothers chicken house was approximately 20 foot by roughly 45 foot on the north wall was a double row of nests fot her layers then another set of nest over to the entrance.but the other thing is along that north wall where the nest ended was about a 15 foot long roost by about 10 foot high and below the roost there was an inclined floor to the north wall about 30 inches above the outside grade
    The north wall had two doors that you could raise from the outside and could rake the manure from the floor of the roost to the outside to a wheelbarrow.. she used the manure to put in her garden and flower/Rose bed we as grand kids had to empty it every so often and wheel it to the area it needed to go in

    Maybe if I got that kind of forested land, those brown leaves, mowed grasses, twigs of the trees are sufficient enough as garden compost.
    I live in the City and it is my habit to gather brown leaves small tree twigs, and mowed grasses in the neighborhood every year and convert them as compost.

    Great intro to the video Evan, really looks good around there. You both have done a great job. You got a lot accomplished today. Looks like you have some useable parts on the old chicken and rabbit coops and maybe till that area for future uses. Possibly till in the cleanings from the barn into the area for a compost pile? Just rambling! You’re doing fine the way you two have planned. Thanks for sharing with us.

    Compost, Wonderful stuff. Eventually turns into dirt. That why saying your older than dirt isn't really a lie. Ha! By the way any time you mix in equal parts a nitrogen based plant(grass clippings, chicken manure, most garden scraps) and carbon based plants(wood chips, leaves, straw) you will get a hot compost pile. Turn it over once a week and you get compost in a few months or less. The hotter you keep the pile the faster it turns. Build you a cold pile out of leaves where your chickens can get to it. Needs to be a good size pile. Bugs will start to break down the leaves and the chickens will feed the pile manure while they scratch and eat.

  • @danielheartsill4269
    @danielheartsill4269 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can't buy as good of compost as you have. One thing that would be good for the raised beds would b e an electric rotateller from Home Depot for about one hundred dollars. It's small and very good in small places.

    If the eggs aren't hardboiled, then just put the egg shells onto a paper towel and microwave for 1 minute on high, then they're sterilized and also crumble up real nice. I collect ge microwaved shells in a plastic bag and then lightly pound them with a rolling pin with the bag closed.
