    You never guessed that board you put on the blocks would make such a great bed for the baby goats.

    Evan, I agree with Jeanines comment on 3 sided cardboard boxes to help block any draft that be keeping them huddled under the lamps. Makes sense. Great video and good luck with the chicks.

    It is a good idea to make a cardboard circular fence 4 feet diameter, 2 feet high, to keep the chicks under the lamps for a period of time. Each week you limite the lamp time until to shut it after 4 weeks . You can take off the cardboard fence when you see they are anough big.

    You could set waterers and feeders on bricks to keep them clear of shavings.

    Use the pvc pipe to make your chicken feeders.. you can fill up the pipe and they eat from elbow opening at the end..Look them up on line.. I’ve seen a lot of people use them..

    Could you put a board on the outside of that open side to keep the draft off them from the back of the barn??

    On your nesting boxes you need to add another 2x4 so laying hens can step into laying boxes..it will help them to lay more eggs. They can't step from the one you got on there into nesting boxes and when they open there wings it makes it difficult to enter box

    Those standard Cornish X look to be 10 to 12 days old. At that age they will find their water. I order exclusively from Murray McMurray hatchery, I'm not affiliated with them, I just find the mortality rate is very low and their guarantee is exceptional. I get the Cornish X Rock, and we love them.
    Always nice to have new chickens on the homestead.

    We raise meat birds every year. They look to be about 2wks old. They will eat way more than you think. You can feed 12 on. 12 off. That being having their feed out for 12hrs and pulling for 12. We estimate about 18lbs per bird for feed from day old to butcher at 8 wks. We always have, and never had less than 6-8lb birds by 8wks. Warmth will be key this time of year. They will burn lots of calories keeping warm no matter the age. Be super careful with the heat lamps. Make sure none have the break-resistant coating as it will kill the birds. You can also just put cardboard boxes in the area so that if there is a draft, they can get away from it. Good luck, they look to be off to a good start!

    nipple waterers are less messy & wasteful than those gravity fountain types like you have. I would guess between 2-3 weeks old.
    At 4 weeks they can go out in chicken tractor.

    What kind of wood chips were those. It's my understanding Oak chips have a nature anti-bacterial agent in them while Cedar help control insect pest such as mites, ants, nats and flies. Pine shavings are good also.

He’d try to show me stuff like fixing cars. He might well have been speaking Chinese, I just never could get a grasp of it. Hope u an the wife are safe with all the craziness.

    I'd advise against the chicken tractor with Broiler chickens like yours... Once the Cornish hit the 6 week mark, they become socialist chickens... just wanting to sit around and have someone feed em… I tried to get the first couple of years pastured but they just wouldn't take to grass, bugs or anything but grain feed... the only benefit to having them in a chicken tractor is they are incredibly messy and it saves ya having to clean the pen out everyday... the down fall to the chicken tractor is that the ground is very damp and they're more susceptible to disease... Yours look to be heading into the 3 week mark... There's actually a pasturing meat bird that takes 12 weeks to mature called the Rustic Ranger. I only take my Cornish chickens to the 8 week mark and yield 10 Lbs avg for the males... 7-8 Lbs avg for the females... have had upwards of 12 pounds for males but that was rare... I was always told by the older folk to never go past 9 weeks on a Cornish chciken

  • @MountainCrestFarm
    @MountainCrestFarm 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I would not even consider buying chicks from a farm store...ANY farm store...Tractor Supply, Rural King, or a local feed and seed. The care is not the best and every kid around has handled them, which is TERRIBLE for biosecurity, which is as important on a homestead as on a large commercial farm.
    I have always used Ideal Poultry in Texas. I've had low mortality, healthy chicks, they come with a 100% guarantee, and...best of all...no matter when you want chicks you can get them. Unlike other hatcheries they are open year round, and have most breeds all the time. A few breeds are the exception, but very few.
