    Jim, perhaps you can answer this for me. If I have a color photo and want to make it into black and white, can I also keep the original in color? It would be nice to have both copies. Thank you.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Daniel and yes. Assuming you are using the Neo catalog, just right click and select "Show in Finder" (that's on a Mac, not sure the equivalent move on a PC) and then duplicate the file. It will automatically show up in the Ne catalog right next to the original. Then you have two. Then you can sync edits between the two and just convert one to monochrome. thanks and hope that helps!

    Question: the lights appear to have been modified using Magic Light before you edited? The rays seem very uniform

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rich and no this was a raw file that I started with, and I did not use Magic Light on it. I shot it at f/22 so all the lights make a nice little starburst when you use a tight aperture like that. Thanks for watching.

    Before I started using Luminar Neo, I edited my photos in Lightroom Classic and used the Develop panel over and over and over again. I was most always pleased with my results. Now however, as you mentioned happening to you, I find myself changing how I edit in Luminar Neo. I'm taking a more critical look at my photography since I've been using Luminar Neo, even before editing begins. And Jim, I blame you, Anthony Morganti, Blake Ruidis, Matt Kloskowski, and the folks at Skylum for the beneficial and more critical eye I've been using in my photography.

    +1 for others who have modified their style with Neo! My change is probably related to maturity and skill. But the downside is now I want to go back and re-edit everything from scratch. My "ah-ha!" Moment of the week was with masks. Not sure why it took me almost a year of playing with Neo to realize I could apply a radial gradient then Come back with brush and erase part of it, thus applying a semi-circle-ish mask. Aybe I just needed the image to be right for the application? Any who- looking forward to a curves video if you make one.

    @marclabro ปีที่แล้ว +1

    nice tuto. How many develop occurences ??? how can we edit the radial gradient on street and the linear gradient on wall ? I don't like neo philosophy for that. develop is UNIQUE raw develop like C1, LRC, ON1 with few sliders and no curve. Then should come local panel with a meaningful names for each local edit (sky, street,...) with possibility to re-edit.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can use it again and again (not sure if there is a limit or not) but you cannot edit the masks, other than with a brush. That needs fixing, I agree. Thanks.

  • @alstroemeria1031
    @alstroemeria1031 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Jim this was so easy to follow and I appreciate your step by step process. Would this totally replace making any changes in Camera Raw? Also, what about adjusting for noise and sharpness which I usually do with Topaz.
    And one more question about closing and reopening Develop: why can't all these changes be made in one instance instead of opening and closing each time?

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Arlene and thanks. Yes this is based on a raw file (when using Neo as a standalone) so it replaces any other raw editor in that case. If you want to denoise or sharpen, you can do that with Luminar Neo extensions or if you use Topaz Photo AI then do that first, especially if it's really noisy. These are done in subsequent steps because when you have a raw file in Neo, you cannot do any masking. You can only mask on the second and subsequent instances of Develop. So each step is a different move with a mask to apply it to a specific area. Hope that helps and thanks!

    • @alstroemeria1031
      @alstroemeria1031 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your response Jim. So this has to be the stand-alone copy, not to be opened as a Photoshop filter?

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  ปีที่แล้ว

    Jim, as always wonderfully done. Naturally it would go against the subject of “one tool multiple times” but what if you had created an HDR image & layered it at about 50%, then the edits? I tend to do that with landscapes, which I guess a cityscape is somewhat akin. Obviously it’s everyone’s choice, but I find the HDR layer (or at least I think) adds a bit more dimension to the overall edit. But I really like your results here! Thanks again for all your expertise & willingness to share.

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much and yes layering in a HDR version looks great too, although this video was really about the power of Develop Raw. But I will be covering HDR in future videos and it's probably a good idea for me to cover this idea in one of those. Thanks for watching!

    • @JimNix

    It bugs me that that the two gradient masks work in opposite fashion!
    Why would they make the circular gradient affect everything OTHER than where I draw?!?!
    I know the mask can be inverted, but this just isn't logical; the linear gradient works on the area I draw,
    just as expected. I've seen this same issue in other programs; I don't get it!

    • @JimNix
      @JimNix  ปีที่แล้ว

    Really good primer on the importance of the Develop tool Jim! One thing I noticed: after your first use of Develop Raw, the "RAW" went away and it just became Develop. I'm still a bit hazy between the two, but I understand the "Develop RAW" is better and more desirable. But shouldn't editing an image using just Develop RAW maintain the "raw" aspect of the image? By comparison in Lightroom, your RAW file continues to be a RAW file no matter how many tools you use (as far as I know).
