  • Diving the Upper Dinas Silica Mine, nr Pontneddfechan in South Wales. 1 dive conducted on July 29th, 2023 over 65mins and a max depth of 23m. 2 Divers with OC sidemount configuration, the diver in the video is Michael Thomas.
Silica mining began here in 1807 and continued on and off through to 1964, supplying silica rock for building furnaces and fireplaces throughout the UK and internationally. The bricks and rubble seen throughout the upper sections of the mine today, came from the demolished mine buildings that surrounded the main entrance.
In addition to the rock formations and exposed lithology, there is plenty of mining equipment left behind to explore in the passageways.

Love how you peg in and out when you take a branch route, that's a brilliant idea, great way to tell any rescuers which way you went to save time and also your buddy where you are if you get separated, love it. Also love your videos, they have peeked my interest in this type of diving and am hoping to find places here in Australia that I can do this type of diving as well.

Amazing video as always 👏👏👏. Do you have your lights on max brightness when shooting? Trying to decide what underwater video light i should buy, and how many lumens is necessary.

Thanks and glad you liked the video, I will generally shoot the videos with the lights turned as high as i can get them, in good visibility like the mines I can normally shoot everything with the lights at max power (this was a combined 20,000 lumen). On this location, I did feel that i could really benefit from more lighting, or even better, if the diver in the shots was carrying video lights as well to get more depth into the shots.

Hey @@nomaddivelogs just curious on your floats set-up. I have a similar rig with 2xKraken Solar Flare 15,000 lumen lights and DJI Action 4. Lights alone are 38.4 oz negative. Having a tough time trying to figure out what floats to get and what configuration. Any advice?

Hey@@sir_hard_lego2868, So my lights are a bit lighter than yours (around 200g each in water, less than half of the Kraken Solar Flare in water), however, i do have a heavy tray and GoPro housing as well so i do need a lot of buoyancy to offset the full rig. I chose to go for double float arms, i.e. from the top of the handles, a large float (I use the Carbon Arm 70/22) with a clamp and then another slim float so i can fold them together for storing and carrying (the thinner float is the Carbon Arm 40/32). I'm also able to fit 2x additional -125g floating rings on the end of the longer arms and it all folds away nicely for carrying on my chest. I use the clamps with the eyelets on the top of the arms for clipping of on my chest D-rings when entering/exiting the water and a small single ender on the bottom of the tray for clipping to my crotch strap. The full rig is still slightly negative but it would sink slow. Hope this helps ...
