In this video i explore the centuries old Jugholes Mine in Derbyshire
Lead mining in Derbeyshire was huge back in the 17th Century and beyond, and Jugholes near Matlock was no exception. In later years it was used to mine fleurspar until eventual closure forever.
    Jughole Mine hold many secrets.............

Exciting video, Ant. When I was in Matlock, there were lots of former lead workings. At the black country museum ,you can visit an old mine like that

Wow! What a great video. Bit off the normal trekking and exploration and totally fascinating. Reminded me of a similar exploration I made many years ago into a disused mining tunnel in the Forest of Dean. Not sure I'd fit through some of those spaces nowadays lol.

Nice to hear you call the tub a tub and not a mine cart. We had tubs and trams down the pit. 👍

Yes if I hear or read carts and trucks I'm almost screaming at them, it's like calling a Narrowboat a barge 🤣

The "chimney" was actually a support for the cable hauled railway system that brought ore/fluorspar from the adit and other workings at the bottom, up the hill. The rails in the large, cavern entrance were part of the same sysyem bringing ore/fluorspar out of the workings there. The ore was taken up the hill on the same system to a loading bay accessed form Salters Lane. All the workings shown were later, twentieth century workings, with some reworkings of the older mine. Much of Jug Holes, mined and natural, has been missed in the video. Some has been lost, some rediscoverd and some lost again. There is more to be rediscovered yet.

Brilliant video. You're much braver than I am! I'm inclined (no pun intended as it was a steep entrance!) to think the rails in the older mine weren't insitu as railways hadn't been invented when the mine was first sunk!

Once you start scratching the surface of Derbyshire's extracive industries you soon realise half the county is like Swiss cheese, holes everywhere!

About 15-20 years ago I had to repair a forklift down there, my mind was absolutely blown when the site foreman told me to drive down in the van, the sheer size of that place is absolutely astounding, I remember going back a few years later but to the upper level and I passed the previous entrance that I'd driven down in the van to find it had been capped with concrete, that whole entire hill is hollow.

Although it's not a mine ...if you ever get to a chance to go down past the showcave at Peak cavern its a amazing place to go. Out of curiosity and probably a little bit of cheek I asked a caving club if I could go on trip with them if they ever went and they ended up taking me and a friend of mine down. Someone had molded a light switch out of mud and stuck it to the wall of a chamber 😂🤣 when i saw the mud man it reminded me of my trip. Great videos as always...... thank you 👍

UK visual media is often spiced with warnings of "Flash Photography", ostensibly because some individuals are medically triggered by it.
The opening for this video should contain a warning: "Claustrophic Spaces". I had to turn away when you were crawling down that corrugated pipe. The superb realism of your vids just amplifies the phobia.

Great can't wait!!! I use to spend every weekend exploring the Corsham Underground Quarries down here in Wiltshire, the War Department used alot of them for Ammunition Storage back in the 40s, sadly I haven't been Underground for years as I have no friends interested in this stuff and as you know it's unsafe going alone ☹️
