I'm a wildlife biologist with 50 years of bowhunting experience. In my experience, the same deer will act differently in different circumstances, like you said based on their conditioning. For example, the same deer that will spook in the woods after catching my scent will come into my yard and eat from our garden next to a pile of my dirty clothes after dark. We need to be learning constantly how to hunt the deer that we are educating by our hunting habits if we are to continue outsmarting them. I think MSU does some pretty good work overall. The study you cited is sketchy.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to share this with us all sir. Thank you for what you do and your knowledge, I felt as if that study was doing nothing but trying to take every ounce of hope a person my have to muster up the engird to go out on a cold say, and trashing it all and then when they took it a step further, I thought, I truly believe this test may be on hunters and see how they react to studies? otherwise it just did not make much send to me. Thank you again and I agree, they are doing the best they can, it just seams some of it was as you said sketchy at best, Thank you, have a blessed week, and If you are still in the woods good luck my freind. Your advice to do what works for you is really what's important. Nobody is on firm ground if they want to argue about what you have actually experienced. Good hunting, and may God bless you this holiday and hunting season! Virgil
I been bow hunting for 30+ years and have hunted in 6 different states in the south and midwest. You are right about deer not being created equal. I grew up hunting in the deep south where the deer season last for 5 months and everyone hunted. Then started hunting the midwest in 2006. It didn't take but a few hunts on public land to realize the deer were no where near as cautious and keen as the deer i grew up hunting on private ground in Georgia. An old mature doe can be much harder to kill with a bow here than an old mature buck in the midwest.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to share this with us all. I truly appreciate your story and experience you shared with us. Thank you so much and if you are still out hunting this season, good luck my friend and may your arrow fly tue. I learn something every year about hunting deer. Although I feel like I can pattern deer well in the area I hunt, they always do something from time to time that is different than what I have been observing leading up to the season.
Yes sir , I totally agree with that. I am always learning as well. There are only a few constants. Food, water, cover and estrus. Changes in weather or moon are subliminal factors. Deer are habitual creatures but some things can and do change those habits. The 4 I mentioned in the beginning are the main ones that dictate a deer's habits. Weather and moon may alter the timing of those habits slightly. The best recipe for success is to minimize your imprint by working wind direction and scent elimination best you can. On public I have even taken advantage of other hunters mistakes and let them push the deer to me. There is no one size fits all. Hunting pressure effects deer patterns and that is probably the biggest reason hunters see or dont see deer.
You actually nailed my hunting style nicely. I do agree with hunting pressure and letting folks push them to me, I have been hunting public for a long time as well. I do find It funner than I did when I was younger and Like you mentioned already, being able to know where others are, (because they leave thier stands there etc) it helps a mobile hunter figure out some great places to hunt knowing they may be spooking stuff to me. Thank you so much my friend for the kind words. Your information is not correct about them taking deer from Mississippi to Oklahoma. That didn't happen. The Oklahoma study was completely different years before the Mississippi study. He stated that. It wasn't even his study in Oklahoma. Also, radio collars have been used for decades on many animals. Their behavior isn't changed. They leave the collars on for years. They become acclimated to them just like dogs.

hahah, your the only one who has mentioned it, IF you do nothing it is still a choice, I believe the video I am referencing to is trying to take every chance of hope a hunter users to muster up the energy to go out, and I you do decide to keep doing what. you have been doing and you dont quite hunting, then it has changed the way you hunt by doing what you want to do and not listen o all the hype of some stuff done on some deer, that dont even have anything to do with the way you hunt. Thank you so much for asking, it did make me smile, thank you for that and I Hope you have a blessed week. If you are still out in the woods I wish you the best of luck friend. Dale
Thank you Jason, I make mistakes all the time, just ask my wife hahha, The last true deer I seen in captivity was named Delbert as I mentioned and he didn't act like any deer I have ever seen in the wild, he came right up to me and wanted me to feed him, so yeah I could be wrong, I have only had that happen once with a true wild deer, but it was a young one and I think she was scared. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment and share your thoughts with us as well I hope you have a blessed weekend and a successful season. Dale
As a Hunter the best experience is your own they say hunt the wind but the wind swirls and I have deer come from all directions , best weeks last in October fist 2 in November keep the does in your area happy the bucks will come eventually I also think the rut deal is crazy November is prime time but a doe coming into heat just doesn't happen because it's November it could happen anytime
I totally agree with you my friend, I had swirling wind this year on my Oklahoma hunt and was blessed it was blowing in my face both times I had a shot opportunity.. I also totally agree on the times you have mentioned and it being a fun time to be out in the woods then as well, as there is not exact date on the rut, sometimes it just varies and I have seen it early and late. Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment and sharing your experience with us all as well. I hope you have a blessed week and if you can get back out in the woods some more, good luck to you my friend. dale
There is absolutely nothing unusual about deer being transported in a horse trailer moving 75 mph...completely natural beside I'm sure the academics pulled over every few hundred miles to let the deer go "potty" and graze by the roadside. If I paid for a Mississippi hunting license I'd be pissed that they sent those deer to Oklahoma
hahah, Thank you for taking the time to share this with us, I truly appreciate your view point on this as well. As I was reading this it reminded me of the times I trailed my horses for trail riding in different states and stopped to let them out to stretch etc. been while, thanks for the memory of that. I agree on so many levels of this comment. Thank you so much and I hope you have a blessed week. Dale
Watched the video, made a comment and was immediately attacked by "professional hunters ". The study has so many holes, misinformation it was very hard to watch. I live in Johnson city TN and have deer here at the house that i watch all year, the big guy only comes here in the rut usually at night. I hunt in Georgia on a pecan farm, the deer act so much differently, one wiff of you and their gone. The neighborhood deer sometimes run but most of the time the head doe keeps a eye on you and the rest just keep on grazing, as many as 10 does and buttons. My take is the less inter action with humans the more wild they are. By the way the big guy is a real trophy and if a car doesn't get him, he will die of old age.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to share you experience and comment on that original video, I seen way too many comments similar to what your describing as to full on attacks to hunters etc, that I did not even try to comment, I thought about this for a while and decided my comment would come in the form of this video. I also appreciate you telling us about your big ole boy near yall. It sure sounds like the type a fella would be just as proud if they could even get a short video clip and or picture of him. I have spent a great deal of my time in the woods with nothing but a camera and still often leave there wishing I had been able to capture more,. Thank you so much again for taking the time to watch and share your thoughts with us, I truly appreciate it and I hope you still have some time left in the woods. Thanks again and have a blessed week my friend. Dale
Talking about collars reminded me of a funny story. Remember back before cell phones we carried pagers. Well if you attach a pager to a cats collar (on vibrate) and then call it. It’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen in your life 😂
Something about that just dont sound tight, however it goes right along with my thoughts on this video, it's not natural or normal behavior you will see when you do that. Have a blessed week and thanks for sharing this with us, Dale
They tranquilized the deer, dummy. They know what they are doing at Mississippi state. I trust their science more than your example of a puppy. These deer were in wide open ranging.
Hahah. I truly appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I knew there would be some that don’t agree with my findings and that is ok as well. I truly hope you have a blessed week my friend. Thanks again. Dale.

hahah, your the only one who has mentioned it, IF you do nothing it is still a choice, I believe the video I am referencing to is trying to take every chance of hope a hunter users to muster up the energy to go out, and I you do decide to keep doing what. you have been doing and you dont quite hunting, then it has changed the way you hunt by doing what you want to do and not listen o all the hype of some stuff done on some deer, that dont even have anything to do with the way you hunt. Thank you so much for asking, it did make me smile, thank you for that and I Hope you have a blessed week. If you are still out in the woods I wish you the best of luck friend. Dale
Think your information about captive deer is wrong.

Cold hard facts right there
Watched the video, made a comment and was immediately attacked by "professional hunters ".

Have a blessed week and thanks for sharing this with us,
Dale
They tranquilized the deer, dummy. They know what they are doing at Mississippi state. I trust their science more than your example of a puppy. These deer were in wide open ranging.
Hahah. I truly appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. I knew there would be some that don’t agree with my findings and that is ok as well. I truly hope you have a blessed week my friend. Thanks again.
Dale.
Whadayanuts ?
I think you're a smart man
Ha. Thanks my friend. I don’t know if I will ever be a smart man but I sure try to make sense of some thing in this old world. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment and I hope you have a blessed week.
