In this installment, I walk through the construction of my first model - the blue train that's not Thomas or Gordon.

Someone commented on the original video that a backstory for the raised splashers could be that, after Edward’s Exploit, he was rebuilt with them so that his whole side doesn’t get messed up like that again. I like that idea.

I've always had two headcannons on why almost all of the main engines are experimental one offs.
Headcannon #1 is pretty simple, at the start the NW railway didn't have a big budget, so the only types of engines the Fat controller could afford were experimentals, engines that would've otherwise been taken apart or left to sit forever.
Headcannon #2 is more self indulgent. Sodor is simply an island of thrown away or unwanted engines

@@xavierjuno4572the fact that it was confirmed with Henry is the reason I think it was the case for all of the original steam team. I mean who in their right mind would willingly buy a mixed traffic engine that has wooden brake blocks?

@@aquarisapothy1849Also Percy, according to Awdry nobody actually knows where he was made and he was purchased used, possibly third-hand, as the NWR was desperate and he was both affordable and capable. Of the steamers we know the origins of, most seem to have been obtained on the cheap. Thomas similarly was accidentally written off by his previous owner and thus went for almost nothing.
A head-canon for me that might awnser the "Why are all of the Sodor engines some kind of experimental engine?". The Tophams were the least *picky* people of all time.
True, since any other person wouldn’t want a declined engine/failed experiment engine from one of the big four
I think the reason he bought experimental engines or old engines is that 1. They could’ve been easy to modify. 2. He could buy the engine for cheap or even for free. And finally cause he cares about his engines

to save them from certain death steam locomotives are already endangered prototypes and one off builds would have such a low chance of surviving the end of steam
all of the first 6 engines being weird one-offs is funny to me because it implies BR just goes " we don't want that shit dump it on the fat one " once in a while and Topham gets a new choo choo

Considering Thomas was originally meant to be a J50, it would also make sense Edward would work as an older LNER 4-4-0.

Concerning why every major Sodor character is a strange one off locomotive, I think the reason for that is because Awdry wanted the trains to look a bit more unique than their basis’, and this was to account for that.
That is a really fun way to look at the engines!
Apparently, you could’ve left the tender pickups out of it. There’s a trick where you can insert small wires or staples into slots 1/2 and 3/4 to trick the motor into thinking it’s connected. Tangentially, you could probably find a way to hide the wires under the N Class tender.
Love this model! Definitely inspires me to make my own Edward model like this! Except maybe with different model but I love this one so much too!

I’m going to too, but for g scale 1:32 scale. I only have the running board and buffers as if right now though. 😕
It sucks that the tender connections were so difficult to work with. If I had to chose an engine in real life that would work best for Edward, it would probably be the D36, like you said, or the D20 or 21. But this Edward turned out great.
Why oh why did he not use a shapeways shell of a Furness k2
I've learned to wait on doing favorite characters/models/things until I've built up my skill to be satisfactory as, like you, learn a lot throughout the building process. You could always build another one, but I agree with you! There is always a charm in the first model that you build, mistakes and perfections included!

Despite it being not to accurate your D16 Edward is a dang good model of Edward!
Another possible candidate for a new Edward model might be the Dapol SECR D Class with its low-slung smaller Victorian/Edwardian (heh) boiler and tall cab and chimney. The only problem is the D Class' distinctive swooping wheel guards, which on the one hand are one of the things that makes the D Class one of the most beautiful engines ever built, but on the other hand could be argued to be not very Edward-ish about it. Also, if Sam's Trains' review can be believed, you were right to be wary of the infamous Dapol quality. Still, for OO Gauge, it may be the best bet.
IMO, I’d try the Hornby T9 but with a different tender.
I think you did here the most accurate representation of a hornby based Edward. This is how he should've looked.

Yknow Tbh, I think D16 Edward looks fitting, it makes him look like he was rebuilt, and I’d say this would be cannon Edward after the events of “old iron” where he got his old worn parts replaced and was given a major overhaul to look different but feel like he isn’t worn out and tired anymore and actually has more strength than he’s ever had before in quite a long time, that would be a good Canon Edward for your Thomas universe in my opinion
So it turns out from the recent Awdry lecture that occurred yesterday on the 20th, one of the picks Awdry had for Edward's basis *was in fact a Claud Hamilton* (Which the D16 is a part of that family of locos).
could it be a D14, one with the angular cab windows, making it look perfectly like Edward? That makes the most sense in my mind
Still such a wonderful video, even after being reuploaded over a year later.
My take is most of the Sodor trains are, due to long service and accidents, none of them are in "stock" configuration.
I want to really want to see unlucky tug making an entire web series about him recreating Thomas and Friends episodes with his models
When you remake Edward Tug, maybe turn this into Molly, she is a D16 after all and this would work perfectly

@@EBRailway And guess what the LNER called the Clauds. D16s. So going "aktually molly is a D56" is not accurate to what the LNER called the Claud Hamiltons. Yes, they had D56, but that was from their order number.

The first ever character created and the first ever model made by Tug
I understand this is a while back for a video but I wanted to recommend, if you want to create your own parts, a 3d printer. Specifically the Ender 3 pro which is a cheap printer to get into the hobby. It really helps for parts that I don't have for personal projects I have.
Coming back to this now knowing one of Edward’s conceptual design choices before the K2 was decided was the D16, not only the exact engine model as yours, but also Molly’s basis is pretty funny. I guess you can call this Edward “D16 Concept Edward” should a K2 ever be made in model form lol
I prefer edward to be a a furnace railway k2 because k2s look charming.

After edward expoilt edward was hevialy rebuilt to have his footplate raised to the side rods dont mess up again
I like the vid unlucky tug, and I have a suggestion if it could work, get pictures of a K2 for Edward then put into blender and model it then import that into 3D printing and have a K2 model for Edward. (Just an idea but hopefully it would work.)

Great model man, you really did your best on trying to make it look like Edward. And you have said that you want to one day redo Edward and while I don’t think that there’s any K2 models, I think that you could use a LNER Class D40 model. It looks almost identical to him!

if we ever get a movie adaptation for Thomas and friends, that's what Edward should look like.
The Hornby Edward used the D16 as the basis.
Being also my favorite I'd like to make a 00 gauge model of Edward someday. Considering how expensive a british engine and being outside of bothe US or UK this will be a medium-term project which should give me time to decided to either go with customizing an existing 00 gauge model or used a 3D body model shapways?

Edward, is a tender engine, he has 4 small wheel, 4 big driving wells, 6 tender wheels, a stumpy dome, and a short stumpy funnel eh I mean a tall funnel
2:10: Probably because they were drawn that way, and Awdry was writing explainations that he felt had to remain consistent with the illustrations.
Also you codove use your Edwards basis tender "3:21" and fit it on this train 3:31 to make big city engine.
8:35 I think he means that neither of them are available as a ready-to-run model however there is a D40 kit but it doesn't look really good

I know i don't know anything about modeling let alone the electronics Hornby used but couldn't he just Transplant the Tender pickups into the N-class tender? It would have taken some work and he didn't know what he was doing at the time but hypothetically couldn't you just out them it, might need some cutting or whatever but shouldn't it be possible?

Checked the Dapol D40 and It's AMAZING. You should really check out Dapol's New models, especially their GWR 43XX moguls and their City class kit. Absolutely unbelievable. Not to mention their A1/A1X terriers don't have the same issues as you said. You probably just got unlucky with your purchases.

I think more companies need to switch to the Dapol-style tender connection. It’s more convenient and they still have tender pickups.
2:11 To be honest, every single steam and diesel engine on Sodor is either a possible prototype of their class or as you described it, a knock off of an existing class.

hey tug I would recommend to change the D16's shell to the n class tenders shell so that you don't have the wires in Edwards cab.
I would probably go with the SECR D class, as it has a strong resemblance to the K2.

Hi, so even tho it isn't that good of a ask I still think it's worth it, if you were to ever remake a model I wanna ask if I could earn money to pay for any model that you redo, I'm 15 and I love train modeling but I have no models or tracks or anything but I'd like something just so I can look at it and work to get it more. I understand if you'd rather keep your models, they all are very Good and your modeling skills are fantastic! But I just thought it was worth a ask. Keep up the Good work Tug :D
