Servant of Alucard it was important to the Director that it was made in his Language. The films he gets paid to direct for the US studios he does in English, but his own movies are all his language. Cronos, Devil's Backbone (I don't remember the Spanish title sorry), and this one too :)

    • @BasilDogbreath
      @BasilDogbreath 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

Yes it is full of gore and violence. But that is one of the most important aspects of the film, as it is because of this backdrop of violence and evil that Ofelia feels she has to escape into her fantasy world. It wouldn't work if she was living in peace and harmony somewhere. That's why it works so well for me - the fantasy (or is it?) of the faun and the princess is ironically the only thing that keeps Ofelia from being driven to despair by the pain and suffering around her. That is one of the reasons this has become possibly my favourite film of all time.

    **Spoiler alert**
One main point in the film that I noticed was death and rebirth. The chalk given to Ofelia by the faun was used as a means of escape. Another "escape" was ultimately the bullet that killed Ofelia. Dark to think about but, her death led to her rebirth in this other realm. Death is just another door to new life.

a doleful chant herding the innocent towards a blissful world. An enchanting whisper distracting us from the harsh reality in which we are forced to breath in and building a fantasy with each of the three note base of the this lullaby.
The hero of Pan's labyrinth embraces this new fantasy so seamlessly that we must wonder about the silent soundtrack that fuels the quest that children often undertake. Is this fantasy really an escape from a lonesome world? Or is loneliness what one might choose in order to block oneself from the atrocities of this world. All this is conveyed in the beautiful, innocent voice that leads this tragic theme.
By the time the strings come in at 1:23, we are reminded that this fantasy plays out in the backdrop of something terrible that coincides with the major plots of one's fantasy. Hearing the cannon can be the overwhelming sound of doom or the powerful herald that precedes a majestic deity. One's marathon can be a gruesome labor pushing the body towards it limit or a spiritual moment of meditation in which life takes form within the 1-2-3-4-5 steps lent to the infinite horizon.
What truly saddens us is the same plot device forced tears as we watch the movie La Vita es Bella. The tragic choral inspired end of 1:50 makes it clear that while we rejoice that the innocent remain innocent through the illusion that paints tragedy into beautiful colors, we nonetheless are aware of the tragedy that unfolds. That one of the magic of great soundtrack, we accept to feel the sadness that the character is oblivious to. We suffer from being privy to the scathing secrets that we pray will never sour the hero's(heroine) smile.
What might this lullaby represents? As it starts, it's hard not to ponder on the loneliness it suggests. Some roads are meant to be taken alone while some quests require one to risk one's life for what seems a mere folly. Some adventures shake one's thought's foundation and compel us to reconsider the very pillars of our reality. One step at a time, led by no one than what fuels us, with each of the three note piano base, bricks are being laid, a new lens on life reveals different colors in which a door is sketched. Will we indulge in this fantasy? Will we accept rebirth and wear this new skin. Is this adventure worth taking?

This film... It's fair to say it totally blew me away. Firstly, most good films are old films... or were... this film shatters that notion into pieces so small you cannot even see the shards of it anymore.
Secondly the layers of the movie, it's rare a movie can have two opposing takes of the finality that are so well interwoven throughout the film that either could be possible. This movie does it so well I change my mind all the time on which I believe. Though one is so poignant that I prefer to believe the other.
Lastly and most simply, everything about this film, the music (obviously), the acting, the script, the story all in all are so well done that it just makes this wonderfully beautiful tale. An instant favourite of mine.

Aside from the title I really like this movie. BEST. FANTASY. MOVIE. EVER.
the only thing that was a bit of a let down was I was expecting Ofelia's mother to give birth to a baby girl. That would of pissed off the captain.

This lullaby is definition of laying down on the snowy ground in forest at night. Snow is slowly falling while I am in fetal position and in not so thick cloths. Only light there is would be the beatiful moon, that is giving its light despite all darkness of the world. Lighting my body and face lightly like a gentle mother loving her kid’s face while they are asleep. I am closing my eyes. I can hear is whispers of the gentle winds that is touching and playing gently with the leaves of the old trees deep in the forest. Their harmony sounds like lullaby. Feeling is so strong that my darkness and depression, my loneliness is this song and that is slowly whipsering and blowing to my soul and giving chills to me. I am feeling cold. For whomever might come across this masterpiece this could mean just a beatiful song for you and I hope you never have to feel and understand it in its true way and I hope therefore for that to not happen you would always be happy and your soul could be without wounds.

A Child. Sees and feels much. Loves without question. is simple. This music evokes the sadness and hope one feels from seeing someone they love be eaten from the inside, watching someone you love who won't fight and will fight.
Who fights a battle every day.
I LOVE you and I see you.
It's scary, not fair, pain, sadness and unpredictability, but I am always here and I am constant and I love you.

I thought that at first too but then how did she move through the walls of the labyrinth? Or get the mandrake root? Because other people could see the mandrake root. And she did end up at the centre of the labyrinth. I am overall quite confused as to what was actually happening in the film but whatever it was I liked it.

Actually the movie falls in the genre of magical realism where the supernatural is treated as a perfectly acceptable and understandable aspect of everyday life. It is a mode of narration that naturalizes or normalizes the supernatural. Writers like Carpentier, Asturias, Marquez, Allende and Rushdie have been doing this for decades before this movie. Nonetheless, Pan's labyrinth is an exceptional piece of cinema :)

I saw this on TV here in the U.K. it had subtitles and I usually lose interest with the first 10 minutes of any film with dubs.
Not this one though, I was hooked.
I stayed up longer than I should and was mesmerised throughout the whole film.
A brilliant masterpiece is how I'd describe it. And of course the sountrack is amazing too.

I'm shocked at what this songs done to me on occasion and so so lucky and thankful to have gone through it. I love it and have been listening to it since they first launched the trailer for the film.
