Kathy, Most underglazes (especially mattes or "velvets") don't actually melt or vitrify when fired; the powders just get bonded together a little so that they adhere to the clay and are not washed away during glazing. The fired underglazes are still relatively "soft"and can be rubbed away (may also depend upon the brand name and the specific formula). The higher the bisque temperature, the more resistant the underglazes would be after the firing. Phil
Hello! I have tried it both ways, with a layer of slip over top and without. The slip layer helps it adhere to the pot a little better. If you experimented with your clay consistency you might be successful in getting good adhesion from the newsprint stencil directly onto the piece. Thank you for the great question!
Silkscreen stencils work best when there are fine details in the design, or if there are elements that are not connected. If you have a design there are businesses that will burn a screen for you. Here is a website for one of those companies: www.anthemprintingsf.com If you can create a stencil without using a screen, with a cricket or cameo cutting machine, they will work as well.
Nice instruction! Was wondering if you've had experience using the silkscreen powder that's available on the market for this process. I guess it's mixed with the underglaze to thicken it up. But could it possibly affect the intensity of the underglaze color? Thank you.
Joann, Hello! I have used the mixing medium for screen printing and have, so far, not experienced any negative reactions in the underglazes. No intensity changes when fired. Jenna
Colette, thank you for the question. You can use any slip, the use of porcelain slip was a design choice. Firing temperature is dependent on the slip you use.
I appreciate you sharing your process. This is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a while. I’m an older lady with some hearing issues. The music in the background makes it very difficult to understand what you’re saying. It’s not a criticism of the content or presentation of the information. My guess is unnecessary background noise is an issue for many people.

Stutz, yes it can, although the results are better on greenware or leather hard pieces.

Was the porcelain slip used because of the design effect? Can you use red/brown slip on red/brown clay? Is high temp firing ok?
