There has been much debate over the question of substance abuse being a choice or an involuntary dependency. This episode seems to point to choice and personal discipline being the most important factors. My own personal opinion is that poor choices lead to substance abuse, but once trapped in a state that has literally altered your brain, substance abuse becomes substance dependency, and making choices becomes so much harder.
That's it exactly. It's still possible to break from that cycle, but it *is* incredibly difficult. I still think it's our own personal choice to continue into it or try to break it, but sin being what it is I fully understand if someone isn't ready to tackle that hurdle.
