I think people love working for South Park Studios. You have like 8 weeks of work a year now with shortened seasons. You grind for 8 weeks and get a great payday and can either work another job the rest of the year or take the time off.
14:07 It would definitely be a different show. The network would have time to think things through and push back on a lot more without the risk of missing an air date. More production roles would be outsourced. On the other hand, production quality might go up, but that might risk the 'charm' of the show
I love the "we don't sit around and think 'hm what's gonna be offensive to people?" reminds me of Anthony Jeselnik talking about stand-up comedy today. He's like "comedians think our job is to offend people. No, our job is to make people laugh." SO many people don't understand this distinction, but the comedians who are greatest at "offensive comedy" never focus on being offensive. They focus on being funny at any cost.
I don't know who the guy "on the right" that you're referring to at 30:45 is, but the other guy sitting down is Bill Hader from shows such as SNL and Barry. He also voices Kyle's little brother Ike and other side characters.
The issue with if they were doing it the same way other studios do is that the show would feel less topical. It would definitely still be good. Thats proven by how much you enjoy the older episodes of things that are now outdated. But if you're watching it as it airs, it does add that little bit more to it that they're making jokes on things currently happening. Especially with this era of the Internet where everyone forgets about anything that isn't a meme in a week, the jokes would already feel outdated as they air
41:00 It is likely are told how the hours are when they are hired, and are probably very well compensated, because this is a rather small staff for such a popular show. Additionally because of the way they handle the show they are basically are only working 3 months out of the year and have the rest of the year off, most shows will be working on a season immediately after the last one ended but not South Park. So good salary pay and short work year likely make it very rewarding place to work.
It's not actually every episode in 6 days. They do a lot of brainstorming at writers retreats before the season starts, it gets some seeds of ideas started. Some episodes sit at half finished for a few weeks until they have no ideas and they figure the rest out. And funnily enough they say the episodes they do in a week are the easiest and techniques they think about too long are difficult. The longest episode to produce was major boobage, about 6 months plus research time prior. They had to do traditional hand animation for the tripping scenes and hired contractors to help, it was 6 months of drawing.
Also the OLD OLD episodes in the early seasons 1 and 2 used to have openings and discussions about the episode and where ideas came from lmao usually trolling the viewers and stuff, Trey had long dumb & dumber harry hair and Matt had a big ass afro lmao
You did not just hear the name Monty Python and go “who?” By the gods man, get yourself some Monty Python to watch! It is some foundational comedy material. It is shocking you have never heard of them. Shocking!

Yes, please react to The Spirit of Christmas AND Jesus Vs. Santa. They're both from before the actual show started airing and they're both pretty short but it's so amazing to see where they started and where they are now. Might also be worth checking out their 25th Anniversary concert live at Red Rocks Colorado.
Its funny cause this was for "Humancentipad" but we see idea they decided to reuse later, like at 6 minutes, "Kevin James is a zookeeper!". Pretty sure thats from the episode where Stan gets depressed and sees everything as shit. They even talked about crack babies wich wasnt just a joke but a whole plot in the end lol. Their type of writing is crazy cause sometimes you can really be like, ok this bothered them that week so they made it a plot, but it makes so much gold. I legit couldnt do it, yes theyre off rest of the year but they still got other stuff and theyre working theyre asses off during that small period, massive respect! 🙃 and for your question, i think it would be a loooot different, if youre able to do something quick but take too much time, you start doubting the product more and more, and seeing how they got to be away for a while from an episode is done shows they would change so much if they could. But majority of the episodes we get are amazing so i dont think id trade it 😁
Love this doc , and yeah, their studio is dope. I also love how Bill Hader was in the writing room for the season and was actually the one who came up with the fish sticks joke just fun fact!
I'm sure it's super stressful producing these episodes in such a short time. But also they only have to work for 7 weeks then they take 4 and a half months off which is pretty dope when you think about it. Lots of time to rest and recuperate between season blocks.
I didn't realize how fast they made each episode until they found Sadam Hussein in that hole in the ground, and South Park was already parodying it just a few days later.
Aye, about time you got around to this. Their process is insane and it's incredible that it even works. The fact they only missed one submission due to outage is both impressive and insane.
I loved Legos as a kid and when I had kids and they started getting Legos I loved helping them putting them together. I would love to get a LEGO set for myself but I want to get a good one and right now I can't justify spending $78 on LEGO set. But I can say when I was a kid, I would put the sets together, and I would put them together the way they're supposed to be, and for about a week I would love them, and then they would start to break and I'd have issues and then I would just break the whole thing apart and combine it with the rest of my Legos😅
i don't think south park ever had that issue but there has been shows that did not shown because the network said no! They went to some backup rerun content!
I think that Matt and Trey are both doing the long shifts doing the work for making the show and not just telling their people to get the job done while they go home probably is why they are able to pull these crunches to make the show at this rate.
I don't mean to sound as if I'm talking down, I hope it comes across as educational. Just thought there should be some clarification. It's not really about which one of them is funnier and Matt saying he's not as funny as Trey. Trey is really funny no doubt about it but he's, and I'm saying this as a positive, softer than Matt. They have similar attitudes but Matt has some harder edges to him. What he's talking about is has more to do with knowing he doesn't have the skill set to work as a director and certainly not that rare combo of writer directors. Most in the industry does one of those jobs, Trey can do both. It affords Matt to have the freedom to come up with some of the most outlandish ideas. Or just venting his frustration about a topic and then Trey sees the tetris blocks of how to fit it into a story that makes sense. And as you see during the final day they can ping pong it back and forth when the entire story has been outlined to fill in the gaps of what they know they want in the show.
I think South Park thrives on the spontaneity. I feel like if Matt and Trey gave themselves too much time to think about the episodes they would never get one done. The time crunch forces them to commit to the jokes and make it work.
You asked if it would hit different of they had more time. I think it might actually damage the show, as they might over think things and the raw ideas might get too polished. A great thing about South Park is it feels raw and straight to the point
You should checkout the live south park concert matt and trey did for 25th anniversary, I streamed it live through paramount and cried because I could be there myself 😂
Just google Monty Python Animation, you'll see what hes talkin about. Terry Gilliam did the cartoons for that show and he was Trey's hero. And Eric Idle, one of the Python's, is in the South Park movie.
Aw. You gotta check out Monty Python’s Flying Circus. Might not be your thing because they’ve been copied or inspired others for decades, but they were utterly groundbreaking at the time. Used to cause controversy in their day. Easy to see how it influenced Trey. They were a British tv show and then made a few films. Best known film is The Holy Grail which eventually was reimagined as a Broadway musical called Spamalot. But my personal favorite is The Life of Brian. They wanted to make a comedy movie about Jesus, but John Cleese has said that when you get down to it, there wasn’t much to make fun of about the man Jesus because he was just a guy who wanted everyone to get along. So they created Brian who lives at the same time and accidentally walks a similar path. So they end up mocking everything AROUND Jesus like fanatics or religious doctrines, without mocking the actual man. It’s great. Their whole thing was irreverence. Pointing out that everything is actually very silly and the more serious we are expected to take it, the sillier it really is.
Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet: Matt was dressed like Gwenyth Paltrow when she won an oscar for Shakespeare In Love which people hated! (that she won, not the dress lol). Later we'd find out that she won because of Weinstein's interference 😒
I wish there was a way for TH-camrs to monetise there content even if it’s 18+. I could see if it was copyright and you were just reacting to full episodes on TH-cam. But because there’s a few swears you’re not allowed to make money. It’s so backwards compared to 10 years ago when you could have no ads and post whatever u wanted 😂😂
This is why no one bashes south park. It takes family guy months to make an season, by the time they bash south park everyone forgets why and south park can clap back in a week
Everybody loves south park because their main themes and plots are relevant and updated to the times they are releasing the episodes. then they have timeless issues and recurring societal conflicts based episodes as soon as they become a talking point in the media. then they make fun of both sides with savage humor. so taking their time just like simpsons or other animated shows wouldn't have made any difference imo. despite the short window of time to comes up with new episodes they still have 8.7 rating after 300+ episodes. if i am being honest i think south park deserves 8.9 or 9.0 rating, there are so many good episodes are highly underrated and the sample size for those ratings are pretty low compared to shows like Rick and Morty.

If they had 1 year to do an episode I dont think it would hit as hard as it did with 1 week because it would not be as fresh in our heads.
I think the benefit of 6 day production is "You're always on top of on current events!" That's why they're always relevant.
Relevance is crucial for satire!
@@seanstinchfield-mp2xm Yup! That's why their Pandemic special was so fun during covid LMAO, they also included Pop cultures in Social media and TH-cam.
Trey sits around with Matt and some other guys, pitches ideas, and they give him either encouragement or discouragement like a sounding board. Then Trey goes into his office alone and writes every single episode, and then DIRECTS every single episode. The only thing he doesn't do is the Maya animations. Trey has a WAYYYYY tougher life than Matt boy howdy!!!!
I think people love working for South Park Studios. You have like 8 weeks of work a year now with shortened seasons. You grind for 8 weeks and get a great payday and can either work another job the rest of the year or take the time off.
Now we gotta watch the Casa Bonita documentary too. Glad you finally reacted to this
Monty Python, British sketch comedy team, who occasionally had short animated segment made by member Terry Gilliam with a similar animation style
14:07 It would definitely be a different show. The network would have time to think things through and push back on a lot more without the risk of missing an air date. More production roles would be outsourced. On the other hand, production quality might go up, but that might risk the 'charm' of the show
I love the "we don't sit around and think 'hm what's gonna be offensive to people?"
reminds me of Anthony Jeselnik talking about stand-up comedy today. He's like "comedians think our job is to offend people. No, our job is to make people laugh." SO many people don't understand this distinction, but the comedians who are greatest at "offensive comedy" never focus on being offensive. They focus on being funny at any cost.
You should react to The Spirit of Christmas tbh! Its a awesome prototype of what eventually became.
27:35. Still looking forward to when you eventually react to S09E03 "Wing."
Unpopular Opinion: Lego Sets bring Zen to an individual’s mental health
"Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull" is a classic compared to "Dial Of Destiny."
Shocking!
29:21 tbh i this would completely fly with the queer community because as someone who is gender fluid, I think it’s great! men usually wear really shit styles to award nomination so I’ll take it 🤣
It's very satisfying to see that Trey and Matt know how to work together as a dynamic duo. I mean, think about it, Matt produces everything Trey creates. What a winning combination!
19:50 ** BUTTHOLE ** 😂😂😂😂
Thats got to be the best job ever. I couldnt be able to keep a straight face at the most hilarious lines while recording it.
Nah if it took months to make it wouldnt be half as relevent, southpark have mananged to be relevent since 1998.
31:10 Bill Hader. SNL comedian who got a HBO show… as a hitman. you could have seen him in some movies too i think.
41:15 you are right. when people who are working are passionated, they won’t care about long hours.
23:04 yep the voice audio is normally the first thing to be done
@24:05 hes talking about monty python, a classic old british show that popularized the sort of humor we find today in randomness
But majority of the episodes we get are amazing so i dont think id trade it 😁
38:00 yo the Lego Death Star is like the most expensive Lego set ever 🤯
Love this doc , and yeah, their studio is dope. I also love how Bill Hader was in the writing room for the season and was actually the one who came up with the fish sticks joke just fun fact!
I'm sure it's super stressful producing these episodes in such a short time. But also they only have to work for 7 weeks then they take 4 and a half months off which is pretty dope when you think about it. Lots of time to rest and recuperate between season blocks.
I didn't realize how fast they made each episode until they found Sadam Hussein in that hole in the ground, and South Park was already parodying it just a few days later.
That's how they stay relevant they keep up with current trends
Aye, about time you got around to this.
Their process is insane and it's incredible that it even works.
The fact they only missed one submission due to outage is both impressive and insane.
"Red rocket was crazy! Who tf sits there and does that to their dog"

8 year old me copying south park 😂😏
Lmfaoooo no way fam
@DisfunktionalTV 😂 crazy thing is I probably didn't know what I was actually doing I do remember my parents screaming at me for doing it tho lol
Lmfaooo
Oh,I thought you were doing a bit....but you actually pulled that off.
@@christofferjenzen78 yeah, literally!! >XD
this was lowkey amazing i can see why people were raving about it
I loved Legos as a kid and when I had kids and they started getting Legos I loved helping them putting them together.
31:08 that’s Bill Hader, He acts on SNL and does movies like IT Chapter 2 or Superbad.
watch Taming Strange (season 17) to remind yourself of Yo Gabba Gabba
If you want to know what Yo Gabba Gabba is, watch the South Park episode Taming Strange
Top tier SP! Hilarious!
That whole "farting on celebrities" thing.. Matt and Trey would actually go to parties and physically fart on celebrities as a goof lol.
i don't think south park ever had that issue but there has been shows that did not shown because the network said no! They went to some backup rerun content!
I think that Matt and Trey are both doing the long shifts doing the work for making the show and not just telling their people to get the job done while they go home probably is why they are able to pull these crunches to make the show at this rate.
23:11 This guy is apparently their “inspiration” for Butters…
God bless you for doing all this south park content even though it gets you demonetized, love ur SP reactions ❤
Yo Gabba Gabba wasn't a cartoon. It was a younger kids show similar to Barney the Dinosaur and Teletubbies
Anne Garefino, and whomever has her job now if she has gone, must have the hardest job in all of entertainment.
What a great documentary. just incredible they can do episodes in just 6 days
I’ve never seen this before, this is pretty awesome and was cool watching with you!! Have a good one, homie 🔥
Yooooo! We did it! Been asking for this for a minute! (Over a year)
Monty Python is the 2nd greatest thing. Right behind South Park.
You should checkout the live south park concert matt and trey did for 25th anniversary, I streamed it live through paramount and cried because I could be there myself 😂
Man, I wouldn’t be able to do this even if it was good money, there’s no way I could make a cartoon in only six days.
My first exposure to South Park was renting season 1, and 2 from Blockbuster in around 1998.
Have you reacted to the deleted scenes?
Definitely check out Spirit of Christmas. Both versions!
Happy Halloween!! 🎃👻
Team America and Baseketball are both great movies from these guys
Taming strange is the episode of "yo gabba gabba
Finally. This is great. The recording of ikes voice by treys daughter reaction is next.
About time! I've been hoping you'd do this for months!
I remember watching your uncensored reactions. They were 🔥
I remember not having to censor them LOL
Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet: Matt was dressed like Gwenyth Paltrow when she won an oscar for Shakespeare In Love which people hated! (that she won, not the dress lol). Later we'd find out that she won because of Weinstein's interference 😒
Team America would be cool but that would probably have to be Patreon only 😂
I wish there was a way for TH-camrs to monetise there content even if it’s 18+.
Bill Hader also played one of the cops in super bad
I'm hip
20:33 sure why not. It could be the final episode you do before we get another season.(which is gonna take a while)
Oh hell yeah, glad you watched this!
