I completely forgot about that fake commercial for the updated version of the first episode. It made me remember another fake commercial they did for another episode-- probably my favorite. Season 4, Episode 6: Cherokee Hair Tampons
Funny that this wasn't the first time they mentioned the show being done with construction paper. I recommend watching season 4 episode 17 - A Very Crappy Christmas as an example.
The funny thing is, this was made in response to Lucas and Spielberg announcing that they were planning to update Raiders of the Lost Arc. Matt and Trey basically made fun of all the various things they could do to ruin it, and while they weren't happy about it, they also got the message and decided not to go through with the idea. In other words, they handled this better than just about every studio that's ever been mocked for their decisions by South Park.
Only the pilot was hand-animated and it took 3 months. After they switched to digital it took 6 days. After this episode came out, most of the episodes on streaming platforms got updated from their 4:3 original to 16:9. Same episodes, just with a wider view and some new background details in some places. The only episode that didn't get that treatment is the pilot.

It was so popular that the following year or two later, they made another one "The Spirit of Christmas (Jesus Vs. Santa.)" This second one, someway or another, made it's way to a Comedy Central executive who then contacted Matt and Trey about making a pilot episode to pitch to investors. So they made "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe." This executive at the time then pitched the full animated show with the pilot and eventually got it green-lit. The 2 Christmas shorts and Cartman Gets an Anal Probe are the ONLY things that they have done by hand with construction paper however they did specifically design their animation software, or whatever it's called, to reflect that look in it's style. 32 years after the first Spirit of Christmas and South Park is STILL going strong. You should really check out the two Spirit of Christmas shorts. Just to see where South Park really started. They are only about 10 minutes combined so you could put them together in one video

But starting from episode 2 and on it was simulated construction paper and stop motion using Maya 3D. Their animation pipeline and tools in Maya got better over time, as well as computing power surpassed realtime speed rendering that they got to the point of being able to do some episodes in 6 days, not all were done so quickly in a given season due to writing taking longer on some and becoming "banked" episodes for later.
9:16 The backdrop (forest through the glass) is meant to be a reference to the scene in Return of the Jedi where Luke meets Vader on Endor, which then plays into Kyle's speech about seeing good in him paralleling Luke's speech to Vader. The Boys reaction to Spielbergs & Lucas changes on their movie is how i feel about the Pokémon anime, the Yu-Gi-Oh! tv-shows like Duel Monsters & Gx. They changed those animes & dont let us watch the uncensored, unchanged & uncut japanese versions of those anime. So i know how Stan, Kyle, Cartman & Tweek felt about George Lucas & Steven Spielberg changing their movies. I think we, as an audience, SHOULD be able to choose if we wanna se the unaltered movies & tv-shows or the altered versions. Love this episode, its 1 of my favorites.
