  • I give my Lemondrop Mangosteen taste testing review. 2-3 years fruiting began more sour, but has sweetened up nicely. Fruiting so much more prolific as it gets older. Tastes like a starburst candy, sweet & sour deliciousness :)
    Then I give a tour of my Garcinia growing in my greenhouse. Sadly lost many to rats, my dogs, and peat moss which must have changed the acidity level of my soil. Anyhow lesson learned, never using peat again!

    Where do you get a ‘superior sweeter’ Achacha variety??

      I bought mine from a local rare fruit grower. He said he took grafts from a tree that had larger/sweeter fruit than your average Achacha. Mine is in ground now, so hopefully I get some fruit set this year so I can judge for myself :)

    What’s your favorite tasting Garcinia

      I have not tasted all of them yet, Lucs, Russel Sweet next on my list. I think the Purple and Achacha are pretty equal. Maybe leaning towards Achacha because it's much easier to grow and the tea from the skins is amazing as well 😀

    Hi I have question about your Santol fruit tree, how cold the Santos tree can tolerate? I live in Orlando,Florida and we can get cold temperatures as much as low 28,29,30 degrees,where you located? Thank you for your response

      I get to around 40f at coldest over winters, and they tolerate ok. They hold onto most of their leaves, but if we get wind they can look a little unhappy. I would say mid 30f would be pushing it. Never know if you don't try though, good luck 😀

    Can’t wait to my lemondrop does that! Have you got achacha to fruit? I’ve had issues with my grafted Lucs, just slowly dying. Lost grafted RSW too.

      No achacha fruit on my seedling in ground, but I wouldn't be surprised if my grafted one fruits next season. My mate Doug has an in ground Achacha about 1 year bigger then mine and his still hasn't set anything so maybe another 2years for mine to fruit. My Russel Sweet was the one that got eaten my a rat 😡I rekon you'd be better buying the grafted trees and keeping them in the north till they get much bigger. Get them shipped down when they are 1meter tall or bigger so they can survive your winters better. I've only lost Purple mangosteen to cold, all others seem to do ok here for me.

      @@mytropicalfruitforestlife yeah my achacha is 11 years old and 2m tall. Really hoping I’ll get some flowers next year, I say that every year!!!
      I seem to have more trouble with Asian garcinias. Intermedia, humilis, even Lucs do ok in the cold. Luca is most cold sensitive and intermedia is least. Intermedia is still pushing out growth now when we’re getting temps down to 7c at night some nights. Not a bad idea to keep them up north for a year. Sometimes I think the plants we get are grafted and sold as soon as they can be with only 2 leaves on them!

      @@sydneyfruitgardening 11 years! I hope I don't have to wait that long, my trunk is pretty thick so fingers crossed. And yes re grafted, they make a lot more money off grafts so makes sense to pump them out. Our climates dictate whether they survive or not, but definitely look into getting larger grafted trees if you plan on staying in Sydney forever. I am even thinking of moving further north to get more warmth :D

    Where are the updates on the purple mangosteens? I couldn't find it in the video

    • @mytropicalfruitforestlife
      @mytropicalfruitforestlife  ปีที่แล้ว

      The update is they're dead 🥲...or pretty much dead. Sadly didn't make it over winter, died back. New shoots started to grow halfway up stems, but they are just too tropical for my region. And I am in the subtropics which is pretty mild. If I dedicated a greenhouse to just them, I think I could make them grow, but then would they even fruit? That is another question. They also shoot out new leaves over winter which is horrible timing, but the past 3 years they've done it so yeah sadly not ideal here.

    Can you spare any for sale to taste to see if I like them before I think about growing one?
